Scion FR-S Will Be Called Toyota 86 Now That Scion Is Dead
The FR-S lives on, with a new nameplate.

Scion FR-S Will Be Called Toyota 86 Now That Scion Is Dead (http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/news/a28483/toyota-86-scion-fr-s-badge-change/)
When first heard Scion was dying, the biggest question was what would happen to the FR-S. We were happy to hear it would live on as a Toyota, but we didn't know until now what it would be called until now. Turns out, its new name is the Toyota 86.
In a post today on the Toyota Driver's Seat blog, a caption of a photo revealed the car's new name, saying simply that "the FR-S will become the Toyota 86 when it debuts this fall."
As the Scion brand only ever existed in the U.S. market, this car has gone by different names around the world. The car formerly known as the Scion FR-S has always been badged as a Toyota 86 in Asia, South Africa, South America, and Australia. In Europe, it goes by Toyota FT86. The "86" designation harkens back to the Toyota AE86, a beloved Corolla-based sports coupe from the 1980s that played a major role in Japan's drifting culture.
We have a feeling the rear-drive coupe will receive some small styling updates before it goes on sale as a Toyota this fall. As for us? We're just thankful this car, whatever it's named, will survive the death of Scion.
Name change to the most obvious choice and speculation that there may be some minor styling updates are threadworthy?

The re-naming comes with a power bump too, finally, even if it’s just a slight one; Toyota says the car’s 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated boxer four is now rated at 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque, up five on both counts. It’s small, but we’ll take it. The suspension’s been retuned as well.

5hp power bump
Edit: I thought it was just a rendering until I saw Scion Canada's facebook page posting the same picture. It seriously looked like someone just photoshopped the part with the Toyota badge and attached it to a BRZ body :heckno:
Finally gets global recognition as a 86. Takes away the 86 badges from the fender. :yuno:

RIP to all the FR-S/BRZ owners who bought super expensive aftermarket hella JDM LED headlights and tail lights with Toyota and 86 emblems, only to have Toyota put standard aftermarket-looking LED headlights and tail lights, with Toyota and 86 emblems on standard as well :lawl:
Also Galactic, there are small round red 86 emblems on the fender still, just in a different location.
Failed by turbos86 cause he's one of the salty losers who bought Toyota and 86 badges

New interior trimmings, a 5hp bump, nicer lights, different exterior styling....add keyless go and auto climate control and its how it should be but no mention of the last two in this update.

I don't know if the minor refresh & name change is enough to address the sales slump...there's so much potential if they just force induce it from factory...but I guess they're worried about it hurting WRX numbers.
I look forward to when the toyobaru twins can be had for 4 digits in the used market.

C&D has a lot more photos. Notice on the 3rd photo how the bottom of new front bumper extends out quite far, like a lip or splitter even, pretty cool.

So glad I have the first gen now. Catfish looking new bumper, no more smooth lines. added useless features to please the mass (steering wheel buttons, hill assist feature)
FIY the power and torque increase is just for the manual transmission. Comes from a better intake and gear ratio.
imo the original frs can look like an exotic to people with little knowledge of car. Now this refresh just make it look like its trying too hard.
Do like the new headlights though, will be waiting to see if it will fit the old bumper

Food for thought, looking at the front end shots of the new bumpers the centre grille area between the "fangs" seems to have a squarish cutout for a license plate on the bottom portion. Once it's there it may look less like a gaping catfish mouth.

You might be right. The original frs looks weird with front plates. This facelift bumper might have that purpose in mind.
Something else new that isn't mentioned in the article
"One the 2017 model, also featured is a reprogrammed power steering, as well as loads of recalculated spot-welded points and panels, plate thickness, etc.. to make the uni-body feel slightly different too."
Kind of want to test drive one when its out.

Possible stock license plate mounting locations, makes the front end look a little less gaping? Honestly I don't have a problem with this facelift, I feel like it will look miles better in person.

It's true. My aunt thought I got a Aston Martin when she saw my frs for the first time. When my boss got his older Maserati he drove it home and and I park my car in front of his. His kid came home and wanted to hop in his dad's Maserati aka my Frs. Non car people that knows nothing about cars still ask me how much hp my v8 makes and how I can afford a Maserati all the time.... getting a lot less now that there is a lot more on the road. But on the days I do wash and make my car all shiny I still get these comments.

100% agree, the new front end is so ugly imo, i much prefer the cleaner and simpler look of the first gen.
The only thing im slightly jealous about for the new model is just the standard led headlights and much better looking stock rims.
but overall, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
silly akinari, insurance stickers go on the back plate :troll:
you also forgot about this plate placement

I think all of us first gen owner is waiting on whether this new headlight will fit the old bumper. Judging from the pictures it should. This new headlight on the first gen would look hot and sucks for all the aftermarket headlight maker if that's the case.
The new transmission change though is also interesting. Other than the gear ratio change there seems to be changes made for durability and better shifting. The transmission is probabaly he one thing that I really want improve yet isn't easily done aftermarket.

A main concern i would see is the price of them from dealerships, might still be better off financially wise to just get aftermarket ones, but i guess time will tell.
Im pretty interested in the transmission change as well. I wonder if they're keeping the 4.10 rear end and possibly raising the individual gear ratios themselves. Could potentially be a good swap for people adding forced induction to the stock motor. :considered:

I have to say, I'm actually liking the 86 facelift more than the BRZ, feels a lot bolder and dynamic, especially with the the bottom portion of the 86 bumper sticking out so far like a lip.
EDIT: A lot more real-life pics of the 86, the facelift looks so aggressive from certain angles, do like
