Hi guys,
Just wondering who your ISP is and how much you are paying, + promo's + discounts you have gotten?

I am thinking about switching over to Novus.. I got a flyer in the mail and it was way cheaper,
I am currently with Shaw's INTERNET 30 Plan, however I am going to be paying close to 80$ a month when my monthly usage is only 2GB out of the 300GB. I have..

I feel it is a waste and just wondering if anyone here uses Novus..

if your building has this Urbanfibre Internet - Urbanfibre (http://urbanfibre.ca/)
best price for internet but only selected buildings :(

but if you use 2gb, more worth it just getting a cellphone data plan lol

I just switched to Lightspeed. So far so good.

But if your building gets Novus, don't even consider anything else.

Naked ADSL as in dry loop ADSL? I had ADSL through the telephone line with no telephone service for a number of years. I had minimal problems with it. It still depends on the copper wiring in the walls, on the telephone poles, and in the telephone junction boxes on the streets. There are multiple points of failure.

I changed to Fiber directly to home, and it's been excellent. Since I received the service last August, I only had to reset the modem once. Speed and latency are very consistent.

She email'd me back

Thank you for your email.

The internet promo is the $30/mth 12mth promo for the Net25 internet speed, with 25 mbps down, 10 mbps up and 250 GB of data transfer. There is no commitment and no contract. You do not need a modem but if you want wireless internet then you would need your own router.

Sounds like a better deal as I am paying 45$ after taxes for INTERNET 30 with Shaw,
However I am on a promotion so it will end soon.

But I guess I need to buy a router then.

Thanks guys for your input, I made an appointment and fully switching over

This will be good as I just wanted to have a set price to pay for internet, although $40 still seems a lot to me, I feel this will be the best choice as everyone says Novus is great

"
Thank you for signing up for Novus services.

The promotion that you are looking at is the $30/month Promo for Internet 25. It includes up to 25mbps download speed, up to 10mbps upload speed, and 250GB/month data transfer limit for downloading and uploading.

The price is guaranteed for one year, and after one year the price of $30 will become regular price of $39.95/month. (Please note our regular rates are subject to change.)

There is no installation fee, cancellation fee or contract.

You will need to call your current provider to cancel services. Novus has no right to make any cancellation for you.

can't go wrong for $40/mo on regular pricing. unless you really go with the smaller brands like teksavvy and what not. those i dont' have experience with. but as a name brand, novus is pretty high up there for their pricing.

I agree, my issue was just that I had a Shaw Promo which was going to end next month and I needed options because I was not going to pay $80 for internet 30..

Saw the Novus flyer, will be $30 first year for " INTERNET25 " then 39.95$ set price after the 12months,

So in the long run I will be saving and not due for price changing

Novus customers are usually hard to win over because they have fibre to the wall and it's a very great sales point. At the end of the day, I think it's just about having a reliable connection and a price point that fit a family's budget.

I work in Shaw's direct sales department and can offer promotions that are usually better than the ones advertised. Only applies to adding services tho. If I can help anybody out, gimme a call or text me at 604-561-9301. Happy to help

I prefer telus.
Just pay $15 extra for unlimited download, and not worry about going over. Shaw doesn't charge extra for going over but they do call me when i go over.
Novus will throttle down the speed for the rest of the month after going over the cap, that's worst!

Finally got my Surf Internet account and service setup. Took about a week to get everything setup, but I did have to setup an installation time that worked for me. Might have taken less time if I was free all week.

So far I've streamed HD netflix/youtube, uploaded about 50gb worth of files to my backup cloud service, xbox live games and haven't experienced an issue yet. I've consistently had a 35mbps download and 5mbps upload at different times of the day
Happy so far with the service :)

^ generally speaking they do not need to send anyone if u already have shaw internet. it all depends on what kind of internet modem you have. if u r on a newer cisco or hitron modem, then they just make some changes to your account and u get the speed instantly. if ur on an older style modem then u may need to drop by a retail store to pick up a new modem. then again if ur on the old cisco DPC-3825 modem in bridged mode (meaning the router/wifi is disabled and ur running it as a pure modem) i suggest keeping that as its capable on 150Mbps and it is the most reliable modem there is available (that is if ur using it as a pure internet modem only and does not need its wifi and router functions)

Usually the other company will do the cancelling for you.

i.e. You sign up for new Telus promo but you're currently on Shaw. Telus will call Shaw on your behalf and cancel all the services that you want switched over to Telus.

try moving the powerline to another plug with only the powerline plugged in. It might be a little better. it also depends on how old the house is,as the cable is not as good in older places. also depends on which powerline model you have as well.

Nope CRTC ruling you must have a basic cable package before you can add any other packages. Is to ensure and protect Canadian channels are protected. CRTC ruling have also said all other add on channels you must be able to order per channel basis above the cable service. Still not happening. One of the reason is that a lot of the channels are under contract so as long as the contract are not expire channel providers such as Shaw/Telus/Novus have to honor the contract. Once the contract expire then some channels might be able to order.

I can ensure you though you will end up playing close to a package if you only want one channel. For example for CNN HD you can order it for $4 for that channel only or add the whole News package for $7. Sportsnet360 is $7 but you can get the whole Sportsnet package for $10. Unless you really care about saving a few dollars it is better to get the package. A lot of people have been wanting HBO standalone only. Well have fun paying $15 just for HBO or pay for the The movie network package for $17.95.

Hoping someone can provide some insight here.

Prior to me changing to Shaw Internet 150. I had one router outputting a mixed signal and one powerline wireless adapter that had the same SSID and pw as the main router, but on different channels. How I understood it was that depending on where I was in the house, my WiFi would jump to which ever had the better signal.

Just changed to Internet 150. The new Hitron modem/router puts out two SSIDs, one 2.4Ghz and one 5Ghz. I still have the powerline wireless adapter, which hasn't been updated yet, so it now has a different SSID/pw than the new channels.

What is the best way to get the same setup as I had prior to changing to Internet 150?

Thanks!

If your powerline wireless adapter outputs both 2.4 and 5.0Ghz, I would change the SSIDs of whatever device is easiest to match the other device. IE. If you can easily login to the Shaw modem/router/wireless, change its SSIDs to match your powerline wireless adapter, or vise versa.

If your powerline wireless adapter only support 2.4Ghz, then just change the SSID for 2.4.

I can see google WIfI being useful in homes but I have people calling in asking for help to setup their google WiFi in an apartment..... Most people in apartments only need a basic $50 router. Unless you are into serious gaming, running a home business or hosting your own servers you don't need a $100+ router. I guess people get is cause is the "new hipster toy"

Hondaracer
04-10-2018, 09:42 AM
In a small apartment the ISP’s router should be more than fine. You shouldn’t having to be use any sort of boosters other than the ISP’s router or like you said, a sub 100 router for the ISP’s who don’t provide one.

Shitty speeds in apartments are almost never contributed to a lack of signal strength and almost always saturation.

Also if you’re having to call in to setup google WiFi, you probably should have gone with an ISP that provides a router as I’ve honestly never setup anything to do with networking that was easier than google WiFi.

Anyone living in Delta, specifically Nordel, that has a good recommendation for internet providers? Called Telus and Shaw, they said they can only provide Internet 75. That's garabage, considering we're used to gigabit download speeds LOL

Hondaracer
09-09-2020, 01:09 PM
Nordel has the curse of providers using hella old infrastructure left over from Delta cable and the like. Telus’s fiber build has been delayed there and Shaw doesn’t seem to want to invest in new infrastructure so if you need faster than 75 you’re going to be looking at tethering LTE/5G connections or Satellite (enjoy the lag)

You don’t have much in terms of options because all the other providers are just piggybacking off the Shaw and Telus infrastructure

whats up with telus fucking always changing the rates and me having to call back and ask them wtf is up, then they prorate it next bill.

my unlimited internet, keeps switching to 1tb limit too. though all of the pricing and shit is contracted. i've been with them for 12 years, this shit is the only thing that keeps reoccuring. no other problems.

I've been with Telus for coming up to 3 years. My monthly bill has never been consistent, not a single month the amounts are the same. The services I am using has never changed since day 1. I don't understand how their billing department even able to reconcile their books...

It's rather annoying and waste of time having to call them every month to ask them what is up. Now I've gotten tired of doing so that as long as the amount is within a reasonable range to what I should be paying. Every damn thing I call it ends up being an 1 hour conversation, don't got time doing that every month.

yeh i rented another tv box and returned it pre-covid. every month i'm still getting the charge and have been on chat/phone to cancel it and i wait a long while and they magically do it, only to see the charge again...i'm too tired and this month switched to email i don't have the patience. it's only $5/month extra (my bill is never the same either).

even though it's fiber i'm tempted to switch back to shaw 150 or whatever...shit's getting silly...i'm in E.Van so I believe i have sevearl options, when i have time i'll be looking in to it.

If you guys have tried to get this resolved once and it still happens then file a complaint via the CCTS and they WILL get back to you to make things right lol

One of the things I've picked up from being on RFD for so long and people always constantly bitching about their telecom bills :lol

This. My bill with Telus is NEVER the same form month to month, and I'm in a god damn 2 year contract.

While I do agree if you call and complain, they do make it right, but why do I have to constantly review my bill like a fine tooth comb every month, complain, only to have to track and ensure they apply the credits to the following bill? Often times they'll make promises, not do it, and you'll have to call again to ensure it's done.

Just sneaky business sense on their part, only reason I've stayed with them is because I find their TV UI to be the best available (can't stand Shaw's unless it's gotten better at this point).

I wish I knew about that when they stole several grand from my grandparents. How it isn't a massive issue that one of the biggest telecoms is frequently fraudulently charging people blows my mind.

My first 2 years on a Telus contract, my monthly bill felt like a variable rate agreement. Goes up and down every month (one month will be like $100, next month $70 and following month $130). Around March this year, I got fed up calling, told them my work hours have been affected by Covid and asked them to please reduce my billing otherwise I cannot pay anymore, they slashed my bill by 50% for a couple months. This is to show a telecom this big still making money by slashing bills in half. I'd give this a shot, make up for all the wasted "time" from phone calling to resolve issues that shouldn't have arose.

^Good call, I'll try that.

Kind of blows your mind how easily they can throw you credits though, makes you wonder how much they're ripping us off on a monthly basis here.

Also another tip is, when you call in and if it's a guy picking up the call, just hang up right away (don't even waste time talking to them). Call again until a women picks up. Guys are dicks at Telus customer service, they don't offer shit all no matter how reasonable you try to be.

^Hmmm, I've seen it go both ways, seen some of the guys be more reasonable, and seen some women CSRs be worse.

What I've noticed the most is that I get WAY more agency in my call if it's routed to one of their Canadian call centers. When I'm routed to their Manila center, it's a total shit show. Trust me, I love my Filipinos, but when it comes to customer service, not so good. Can't count how many times I've had to request being contacted by a Canadian CSR in order to get a technical or billing issue resolved.

One time I was on a business trip to Toronto and I was trying to use my Crave account to watch my HBO from my hotel room. For whatever reason my Optik account wasn't aligning with the Crave website. The CSR Manila literally told me that I could only access the site in BC or Alberta, and not Ontario. I LOL'd so fucking hard, ended up asking for a Canadian CSR to call me. Low and behold that totally wasn't the issue, of course I could watch Crave in Toronto, he simply routed me to the WatchOptikTv website instead. Easy fix.
