even the 1070 will be faster than Titan X....time to save money!!!!

NVIDIA's GTX 1080 GPU is faster than Titan X, lands May 27 (http://www.engadget.com/2016/05/06/nvidias-new-gtx-1080-gpu-is-even-faster-than-the-titan-x/)

it's not so much that it outperforms last generation's flagship by a healthy margin that makes it so impressive, mind you this used to happen every year or so

it's that the reference design clocks 2.1GHz on air and still maintain 67 degrees with only 1 power connector.

the implication it has on the unlocked big dies next year is huge...I can't remember the last time all of these happened at once:

1.5x die shrink (28nm to 16nm FF)
new memory standard (HBM/GDDR5X now and HBM2 next year)
new API (DX12)
?? newish resolution (4K) playable on a single enthusiast-level card?? needs benchmarks to confirm

profit records again will probably be broken again and then some.

I foresee many will upgrade this time around. If you like 'futureproofing' your hardware...you're in for a treat.

Sounds like this time it's a architecture change which usually means big gains. The next iterations after this will probably mean just cramming more transistors into the architecture to make it faster. Good time to buy this year :)

I was being sarcastic anyway; the new "4K PS4" is a turd that just upscales games to 4K from 1080p. In this case it's marketing

This generation sits in an awkward spot, IMO. I see this as being a Max 1440p card, and a medium setting 4k card. But who knows, maybe graphics requirements at 1080p might ramp up with newer games.

sounds like a good time to upgrade.

I'd wait for reviews of the hardware first before placing an order. Manufacturers always cherry pick their best numbers to throw out during these types of conferences.

I'm currently on a GTX 970 and I get pretty much max 1080p settings on most games right now. I'd imagine the same goes for people with the AMD equivalent

Great news.
Possibly mean that the lower end cards, 1050 or 1060 will able to to max games out at 1080p with high fps at a very low cost.

I wonder how 21:9 (1440p) monitors will work with the new 1070 cards...I guess it will need to run at 2560 x 1080p to get smooth graphic

this was based purely on the supposed numbers the new chips were capable of

for the geeks

Finally Thoughts

NVIDIA has excited the PC gaming world with the release of Pascal and the GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. It hits some critical points in the process of doing so. It’s the fastest GPU in the world. It’s the most power efficient GPU in the world. It could be among the best values in a high graphics card in years. It leaves me craving both the inevitable “big Pascal” card as well as the lower cost 1070/1060/1050 options coming later in the year. If you are PC gamer, regardless of your current GPU commitments, you WANT to see launches like this, ones that push the envelope and make competitors work harder to keep up. NVIDIA’s GP104 launch does exactly this.

It’s not a perfect release – the added $100 to what was once the reference design, but is not renamed the Founders Edition, will leave a sour taste in many gamers’ mouths. Does NVIDIA deserve to be able to charge $100 more for the early adopters? Sure, capitalism states that they should sell it for whatever people will buy it for. We had this same argument about G-Sync monitors and the market upheld NVIDIA’s higher prices. I think the same will happen here with the GTX 1080. You may not like it, and I’m not a big fan, but it clearly is what NVIDIA thinks is best for them in the long term.

lol what do people use these for? I remember in 2010 it was all about crysis, farcry, left 4 dead, battlefield etc.

Do people really need this much power?? I just play counter strike global offensive which needs approx 200 FPS. what card can give me that much power on a 24 inch monitor 120hz?

edit: i am using an ATI 5850 from 2009..... plays it fine at 120 FPS at low res and med settings which says something about this game lol..... 7 years lasting strong on my overclocked video card!!

Mostly to do with resolution. A lot of people are playing at 2K and 4K resolution now, and a lot of the single cards on the market can't push that many pixels to be 60fps smooth on ultra.

I still prefer 1080p, so my 980TI pretty much maxes everything that I play. Only thing that it has troubles with is Hitman, but that game is an unoptimized piece of shit, lol.

By the way, now is a good time to get a 980TI.

You can probably snag one for like $550 on Craigslist with the enthusiasts all dropping them in anticipation for the 1080.

some leak say the 1070 and 1080 performance gap is much larger than 970 and 980. price of 1070 is only slightly cheaper than 980. Can't wait until 10 Jun launch.

which combination should I pick?
1. Dell U3415W + 1080
2. Asus PG348Q (gsync) + 1070

$380 US for the 1070, and the benchmarks don't look too shabby at all either.

yea it appears stock for stock the 1070 beats the 980ti at 4k, 2k, and 1080p

but the 980ti can easily get 10-20% more performance by overclocking it - which will still edge out to be better than the 1070

but for the price of the 1070 - you cant complain at all...

still deciding between 1070 or 1080 since i do mainly 1440p144hz gaming.. but rumor has it that ncix non-fe 1080 are only $20 less than the FE cards which makes no sense when nvidia announces it to be ~100 usd cheaper..

If I buy a GTX 1070 and use it with my i3 dual core from 7 years ago, I should be able to notice an FPS increase from my ati 5850 still correct?

Averaging 120fps in CS GO :) , playable but wouldnt mind smooth butter. Will buy parts as time progresses obviously and place the 1070 in it.

how does this compare to nvidias offering for the similar price range?

$199 is so cheap to pass imo but I have a 120hz monitor with DVI cable for the frequency usage. Do i have to use DVI to HDMI or Display port?
