The flight departed from Charles de Gaulle Airport late Tuesday night with 59 passengers and 10 crew members on board.

The company said the Airbus A320 was travelling at an altitude of 37,000 feet and disappeared 10 minutes after entering Egyptian airspace.

The radar lost touch of the plane at 2:45 p.m. (CLT).

Search and rescue teams have begun to search for the aircraft.

Ihab Raslan, a spokesman for the Egyptian civil aviation agency, told SkyNews Arabia that the plane most likely crashed into the sea.

An EgyptAir plane was hijacked and diverted to Cyprus in March. A man who admitted to the hijacking and is described by Cypriot authorities as “psychologically unstable” is in custody in Cyprus.

The incident renewed security concerns months after a Russian passenger plane was blown out of the sky over the Sinai Peninsula. The Russian plane crashed in Sinai on Oct. 31, killing all 224 people on board. Moscow said it was brought down by an explosive device, and a local branch of the extremist Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for planting it.

In 1999, EgyptAir Flight 1990 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near the Massachusetts island of Nantucket, killing all 217 people aboard, U.S. investigators filed a final report that concluded its co-pilot switched off the autopilot and pointed the Boeing 767 downward. But Egyptian officials rejected the notion of suicide altogether, insisting some mechanical reason caused the crash.

Is the MS designation for an airline or specific types of aircraft? Just curious because iirc, the last plane that went missing was an MH something (I think).

MS is the designator for the airline.

Pretty sad, first I've heard of this. Don't want to speak too soon, but at least it looks like the plane was only about 40% full. Kind of curious of their operations with 10 crew. In Canada we would have 5, maybe 6.

Egyptian aviation officials say an EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo with 66 passengers and crew on board has crashed.

The officials say the search is now underway for the debris. They say the "possibility that the plane crashed has been confirmed," as the plane hasn't landed in any of the nearby airports.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

i'm going to put money on another bomb. it's not hard to find a couple of hard line islmists that have access to airplanes via their jobs at CDG, as was the case in Egypt a while back.

What a tragedy.

edit: may not have been a bomb... damn these early reports tell you every possibility under the sun.
