: Conditional discharge for driver in fiery crash of Lamborghini in Surrey

An Edmonton man who admitted to dangerous driving in connection with a dramatic Lamborghini crash in Surrey has been given a conditional discharge.

Adam Shtay, 28, pleaded guilty to the charge in April and was sentenced on Thursday in provincial court in Surrey. A charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while street racing was stayed.

A conditional discharge means that if Shtay abides by the conditions of a probation order — which, in his case, will last for 12 months — he will not have a criminal record.

In addition to his conditional discharge, Shtay was issued a nine-month criminal driving prohibition.

On Dec. 21, 2014, Surrey RCMP were called to the scene of a crash on Highway 99 near 32nd Avenue in South Surrey. When officers arrived, firefighters were putting out a fire involving a 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago.

Shtay, the driver, and a passenger were standing nearby unhurt.

A dash-cam video showed the Lamborghini passing on the right and then weaving into the left lane before spinning sideways and going off the right side of the road and crashing into a fence.

Police estimated that the Lamborghini and a second vehicle, a 2013 Dodge Viper, were travelling up to 157 kilometres per hour before the crash.

What a bs verdict. I'd also like to know why the street racing charge was stayed.

I won't say I don't speed, but I'm more cognisant of the speed I'm going. Even more so since I've had a kid.

doesn't look like they were racing. I had seen those two cars together cruising around quite a bit, and they drove like douchebags from time to time, but that's not necessarily "racing".

Some people here need to give their head a shake. A driver shouldn't be treated differently for an offence or a MVA just because of the car he happens to drive.

Dumbasses swerve off the highway every single day in Civics, Fords and the like POS with no more attention than a tow, perhaps a ticket, and a bruised ego. The driver in this incident had to face a lot of extra scrutiny just because of the type of vehicle involved, which is not at all fair.
