My 10-year laptop has finally died and I'm looking to get a replacement.
My criteria is bare minimum. I rarely use laptop and my only need for it would be to watch movies connecting to my projector (so VGA port is needed). I do not need any portability and basically just need a working laptop that can watch some higher definition movies and some MS office processing power.
It looks like used laptops is the cheapest option but I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions as to where to look for these other than craigslist. Has anyone had experience buying refurbished laptop on Bestbuy website?

Dell Latitude when it goes on sale. Also I see one on Craigslist which appears to be a refurbished never opened.

Sometimes those ACER laptops goes on sale for ~$300
But the processor is usually a lower model intel or AMD, hence the price

Was it one of those "netbooks" that were popular 6 or 8 years ago? If so those were shit to begin with, using already 10 years outdated technology

i bought 6 of these in the last few months. i have techs that keep dropping laptops. i gave up and started buying refub. they have been solid.. i reccomend the 8gig over the 4gig of ram. for basic use, it is fine. no hdmi, but has display port.
pretty rock solid, but it is pretty ugly as well

This. Thinkpads are great for the purposes you wanted, and are dirt cheap, especially on eBay (like $150 for some of the models worth using). Most are lease returns from companies, and therefore are usually in decent shape. Toss in an SSD, and you're set.

They invented tablets for people like you, way less laggy for the same price and basic function. Word processing with an addition of a keyboard like the ASUS transformer. Getting an HDMI to VGA adapter would solve the projector issue.
If you're set on a laptop I would skip anything Acer at that price.... never again! had two and hard drive died in both in less than 5 years... so if you're getting a used one.. even worse. Also have an mini ASUS 9inch laptop since 2009... lags like hell (takes a good 10 minutes to boot) but the hard drive still going strong, also powerful enough to run Photoshop and AutoCAD at the same time

Thanks guys. I ended up buying a Lenovo T420 from Refurb.io for about $300. It was well specced and offered much more than what I needed.
