Haven't been there in years, but Al and Jan's Fish and Chips at 152 St and Fraser Hwy in Surrey was great when I used to go.
Pajos is up there IMO, the setting in Steveston also amplifies the taste :P
Fish Counter on Main Street. Great quality but pricey.

+1 for Fish Counter
Get an oyster po boy while you're there to go with your fish and chips :sweetjesus:
Ask for unsalted fries though, they go a bit too crazy with the salt
I liked the shrimp mayo that you can order on the side for your fries at Go Fish. Fish was better than Pajos imo

My son loved to take the skytrain and seabus when he was younger (when family's could still travel for free!), so a lot of our weekends back then was spent going to Lonsdale Quay. In the food court area, there's a place called Montgomery's Fish & Chips. Worth a try.

In my opinion, it was pretty crummy when I went for the first time in March. The batter was sweet and tasted like egg for the most part (kind of like an egg tart). The tartar sauce was bland. The dining room had that greasy feeling to it as everything had that greasy stick to it.

Just had the Halibut and Oyster Po Boy @ The Fish Counter on Main street....
blows pajos out of the water, not really close imo
I been to pajos like 10+ times and I give it a 7/10 , Fish Counter is like 9.5/10 , only place comparable is Joe Fortes.
The Oyster Po Boy Sandwich which has Kimch inside is fucking huge for $9.00..... so cheap! Worth every penny!
Super friendly staff!!! Had a chat with the employees (probably the owner since he was ordering the other guy what to do) and music is old school and retro which I liked. I had a showing around the back as well and was super chill.
Cockneys is terrible, even the all you can eat isn't worth it.... batter is soggy, sauce is normal , 5/10
The Halibut at Fish Counter was really crispy and has the best batter I have seen in my life.... the tartar sauce isn't normal tartar sauce. It isn't fat and thick which I love! The fries are meh imo but it does come with cabbage and kale salad in every order. Drinks are unique as well, apple spritzer and some bottle cola's / white tea cold etc.
Thanks revscene for recommending this, I now recommend everyone to try it out and get the Halibut :) . 1 piece + Po Boy made me filled up the whole night. Finished two order of fries myself so my 6pack hates me <3 ..... I had to do 30minutes cardio everyday to burn this now haha

Went to The Fish Counter as per Verdasco's recommendation
Didn't take photos because the food was so damn good
Ordered Ling Cod + chips and the Oyster Po Boy, shared with wife for quick dinner
Oyster Po Boy was one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten in my life - for $9.50, like what Verdasco said, it's a steal. REALLY REALLY good, oysters fried perfectly and seasoned well. Kimchi works well with the combo. Verdasco's photos are more accurate on what it looks like. DEFINITELY WILL GO BACK FOR THIS AGAIN and I have already recommended The Fish Counter to a few friends already
Ling Cod + Chips, also extremely good, just as good as Go Fish, but larger pieces. Fried very well, was not over cooked and the oil wasn't gross old oil. It was nice and golden brown, not overfried. Ling Cod was very fresh, I didn't even season it.
Overall 9/10
Good customer service. -1 because fries were average.
I'm by no means a fish + chips expert, but I have to say that this was probably the best fish + chips I've had locally in the Lower Mainland
Will definitely go again for sure

Went to Moby Dicks today as a result of this thread.
As usual, fish and tartar was insanely good. Fries needed salt and vinegar (malt for me) as they come out plain.
Think next time I'll ask for separate plates as the plates are small and they lie the fish on top of a plate of steaming fries. Should keep both crispier.
My wife still has a picture of her and her girlfriends hung up there from an Amsterdam trip they took ~13 years ago. My 9 and 7 year old kids got to see it for the first time today. So did my 1 year old but I dont think he'll remember :lol Still pretty cool.

The only thing I would say about fish counter, is that I don't like their fries. Maybe it's too natural, maybe i love that coat of whatever batter costco uses, but I find their fries a bit soggy to my liking. Oyster Po-boy from here any day.

Finally had the Oyster Po Boy from Fish Counter yesterday. OMG.
Mine didn't look like Verdasco's, so I assume it depends which cook is making it on a certain day. They put the kimchi below the oysters, which makes it look from asthetic standpoint, a bit more plain... but the sandwich is anything but that. Tons of flavor, the oysters are big and sweet, the batter is light and crispy. Even the baguette they use is really high quality. One of the best sandwiches I ever had.

because of this thread, finally went to fish counter (even though it's only a few blocks from where i live???). I'm going to have to say it's the best fish i've had by far in vancouver. Go fish isn't even 1/2 as good as them. Price is steep for 2 pieces cod, but oh so worth it.
Also had the oyster po' boy and loved it. This is the best deal by far at only $9.50. too much bread for my liking. i ate it open faced instead and it was perfect.

Been to Fish Counter a few times. Had the Arctic Char the most recent time and thought it was decent. I prefer Cod over Halibut. The batter is on point.
I usually get 1pc fish along with the Po Boy which is what most have said, very good. However the last time I had it the oysters were not very fresh and tasted a bit "off". Couldn't finish it. Next time I'll be getting 3pc. Maybe get the Po Boy after summer...

First time trying it here. Honestly don't see the hype about it. Was a huge line waiting for take out and I waited 15min for a table too. Was not impressed at all. I passed by Granville Island a couple of days before and had better fish and chips at the food court. Also tried Pajo's about a year ago and it was outright nasty. Did these places go downhill? I've gotta give Fish Counter a try.
On the upside, their poutine was pretty good.

The fish and chips at Moby Dicks is just ok. I like the clam chowder there, though.
Went to Austin in Pitt Meadows and had the oyster combo - 4 df oysters, 1 cod, chips and slaw. Left pretty satisfied. 4/5
i tried the oyster poboy and the shrimp and crab poboy a week ago. gotta say i liked the shrimp and crab one more. come at me!!

Pajos has gone downhill in the past year. It was never amazing, but always solid fish and chips. Now it is below average in my books.

Bump.
After having some awesome fish and chips at Barb's lighted a fire in me to look for equally as awesome fish and chips in the mainland. Any new places popped up that are good? Or is it the same old?

Oh man how have I not discovered this thread. I am an addict!
Two of the best ones I've had so far are from this chain fish and chip restaurant at the west edmonton mall foodcourt, and also at Gordon Ramsay fish and chips in Vegas. Have not really found any that compare locally, unfortunately

Ended up making my own fish and chips.
Well, fuck. First of all, temperature control is important as hell. If you attempt this yourself, make sure you get either a deep fryer with a PID/temp control or a suitable thermometer.
I had no idea WTF I was dealing with and cranked the heat up on the oil and my fucking God, the fish turned out like blackened fish (but was still cooked beautifully, thank goodness.) I lowered the temperature on the second round and it turned out perfectly. Third and fourth batches were okay as there was too much temperature loss, so the batter was not as crispy. They turned out lighter and not as crispy, but still good.
One thing I regret was not using enough seasoning as I was too afraid I would over season the fish and ruin the damn thing, but it's safe to do so and I would do it more liberally. Slice some lemon, throw up some fries with sea salt, parsley, and paprika - yum. Don't forget the tartar sauce!
For reference, I used Gordon Ramsey's recipe. I suggest making the batter overnight and use a good lager for the beer batter. I ended up using Mill Street Organic lager and went to the fish market to get nice fresh pieces of cod, about a pound, which served two people, but I would say a three adults is more accurate.

I think it's called the Flying Fish N Chipper, it's a food truck. Solid 2pc cod and chips/coleslaw for $14.

Went to Pajos a couple weeks ago, what a huge disappointment. Had to wait 45min and it was expensive, soggy and lacking in flavour.
Went to Fish Counter 2 days ago, fresh and delicious. 2pc Cod and a Oyster Poboy hits the spot!
