'O Canada' overwhelmingly voted in favor to be gender neutral

I get it, but really? This was a pressing issue? I normally support "progression", but frankly, this is bullshit that this was voted on among other pressing issues.
Dying MP's gender-neutral O Canada bill passes final Commons vote - Politics - CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/belanger-o-canada-gender-lyrics-bill-1.3636348)
Dying Liberal MP Mauril Belanger's private member's bill to make the national anthem more gender neutral cleared its final hurdle in the House of Commons today, passing by a vote of 225 to 74.
Bill C-210, which would change the second line of the anthem from "in all thy sons command" to "in all of us command," will now go to the Senate. Bélanger was in the House for the vote.
After the vote nearly all MPs in the House stood and sang the national anthem.
The anthem change has been a Bélanger cause for years but has taken on far greater urgency in recent months after he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease and his condition rapidly deteriorated.
The outcome of today's vote appeared to be a foregone conclusion early on as most Liberals and New Democrats supported the measure going into the vote, while the Conservatives, who oppose the bill, have run out of political tactics to slow it.
But the bill will still need to clear the Senate before it becomes law.
Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth, the bill's sponsor in the Upper Chamber, told CBC News she believes the legislation has enough support to pass but it's unclear whether that can happen before the Senate rises for the summer.

It's not a pressing issue but I don't see a problem with modernising it. For me I'd rather remove "God keep our land" from the anthem first. I never sing that part, I usually just say "O Canada" during it. I suppose that's what people could do if they really care about "all thy sons command"
Doing things for no other reason than "tradition" is the most bullshit thing ever.
The English anthem is terrible. I'd rather institute a translation of the French version.

What's next? remove He/She from dictionary? or just He because She already contains the word He.

This is actually makes it resemble more of the original version than when it was changed to "all thy sons command"
The more I think about it, the more I feel like they did it really soon to give the MP a legacy in Canadian history.
I'm okay with the new anthem, but it will get some getting used to, it doesn't sound right just right now.

then people would bitch about white privilege more. I'm not a religious person but I don't want to change something because on my (lack of) religious views and force it upon others so I'd prefer "god" to stay, as well as "native land" people will probably want changed for not including people that immigrated to Canada. Just leave it as is, which is how the majority of Canadians want it when they were polled in 2010.

But it doesn't, and that isn't an equivalent comparison anyhow, but even If it did say that...
the cost of writing legislation, the readings, the publications, the debates, delay tactics, the process of passing through the levels of govt., until Royal assent, is too costly to worry about a couple of lines in an old af song
I don't care about the change, just the bureaucracy and costs to do so -_-

I know it doesn't, that's not the point. The point is to try to put yourself in someone else's mindset
People constantly bitching about "the cost" because there is nothing else to argue about. There is a "cost" to everything. Plenty of much shittier things "cost" much more, and nobody complains about those.

I couldn't agree with you more.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. But I guess we have to now just to cater to a select few who bitch and whine about stupid things such as wanting to use a womens bathroom just because an 8 year old boy knows hes a woman on the inside. If its that much of a problem, use the staff bathroom, if you're in public use the family washroom that most places have. It's no better than shopping at christmas and paying for an item and the cashier says "have a merry chri...happy holidays".
I'd like to keep the anthem just the way it is.
to the transgenders - I don't care if you add some breasts or cut off your dick and play dress up, you're still the gender as you were born.

You would be singing a different tune if someone you cared about had some of these issues. Just saiyan.
We all need to walk a mile in their shoes to understand it. I don't have any friends or relatives who are transgender, but that doesn't mean I stop trying to understand it. This world would be a much better place if we all tried to be a little more tolerant. I was like you, Stewie. I made fun of gays and anything other than what I was.......... I then realized everyone has the same hopes and dreams as I do. People are people and we need to respect each other.

Topics like this are annoying as fuck because if you're against it you're labeled as a hater who doesn't support the LGBTQ. I'm about the biggest atheist there is and it's never even once crossed my mind to get upset about the word God in our anthem either.
It amazes me the senseless shit people get upset about these days, in some ways I think they just make an issue out of anything just to see what they can get away with.
You want the word faggot out of an old Dire Straights song? Done.
You want to change the national anthem over the word 'son'? All you had to do was ask.
I've always supported people being what they want to be, it's a free country live your life how you want. That being said, no matter what you identify as, a whiny bitch is a whiny bitch. Some people aren't content unless they have a new issue to complain about.
This is Canada and by golly no ones feelings will be hurt on our watch.

If they want to be transgender go for it, just don't make me cater to their specific needs about having the word "thy sons command" changed because it now offends them. People are people and we may need to respect each other but in reality we don't. Do I respect you? absolutely, you've never done anything to make me not. I may respect most people, but some people are a lost cause in my books (some people, not generalizing a specific person to represent a group)

For the record, this is a righting of a wrong. The 1908 version, the most commonly accepted "original" is gender neutral and was changed in 1980. Why shouldn't our national anthem be inclusive of both men and women?
If anything it's rather disgusting that the Conservatives continued to fight this issue for so many years - this should have been a minor bill (of which we have many) and one that shouldn't have attracted so much attention.

In Days of yore,
From Britain's shore
Wolfe the dauntless hero came
And planted firm Britannia's flag

The thistle, shamrock, rose entwined,
The Maple Leaf Forever.

Our Emblem Dear,

God save our Queen and heaven bless,
The Maple Leaf Forever.
At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane
Our brave fathers side by side
For freedom's home and loved ones dear,
Firmly stood and nobly died.
And so their rights which they maintained,
We swear to yeild them never.
Our watchword ever more shall be
The Maple Leaf Forever
[CHORUS]
Our fair Dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound
May peace forever be our lot
And plenty a store abound
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever
And flourish green for freedom's home
The Maple Leaf Forever

Let's just change the anthem to the Ballad of Tony the Transgender Trucker, a lovely storey of a 55 year old truck driver who identifies as female, but can't afford surgery to have his dick chopped off and a pair of tits installed so he wanders the public bathrooms with your 12 year old daughter in the stall

"Uh there are girls here too you know."
Yeah, you know her, that fat ugly cunt who hates life because she never grew up pretty and decides to hate men over it. The rest of the people realize the word "guys" is just grouping everyone in, and doesn't mean that they aren't being recognized for the lack of a dick.
can't have drake write a song, he'll offend too many people:
women - rapping about bitches 'n hoes
nerds - rapping about bein' a playa
vancouver - reppin' the TDot
american NBA teams - showing raptor love
everyone - hip hop artist so probably an obligatory shout out to God, that's how we got in this mess in the first place
i propose we keep it simple and use this as our anthem and just rename ducks canadian ducks

Honestly, that's the way I'm thinking too. Canada isn't the country that it used to be. It's a mess right now, and I can't see it getting any better. If this is how the Parliament wants to spend their last few weeks before summer break, it just shows that their priorities are in wasting time, rather than making change.

Fuck this shit. It just comes out of tax payers pockets to change anywhere it appears. WTF. Waste of time and waste of fucking resources to make no impact to the meaning of the anthem except that now someone or social group wanting it to be gender ambiguous.
I'm all in for change when it is progressive to society, but how does this fucking help Canada economically? It doesn't, it's ass-backwards. Anywhere the anthem shows up will need to be discarded and replaced with a few words updated. Reprint, then dispose of the old shit. Not cheap. You know what that's like? Buying a textbook and then a new edition comes out that changes a few lines the next year and your fucking text book is worthless when you try and sell it back to the bookstore. How pissed off were you when you spent $130 before tax on that Organic Chem text book and the same date the year after you find that they can't take it back or they will only give you $0.50. WTF I covered by textbook and everything, it was mint and not a single highlight in it.
The only thing is you can pawn it off to the next student as used hopefully for a higher price.
Again, fuck this shit. Meanwhile poverty and property crisis is going on. What the fuck.
Hey you know what else? Better get rid of the French language from Canada 'cause you know that language is seriously gender non-neutral.
Let's see how popular that opinion will fly with Quebec.

I welcome gender neutrality!
Now that women have taken the call for long work hours, they'll be encouraged to join the army next too.
Females probably outnumber males in Canada so imagine the surge of new soldiers ready to delay the next world world drafts.
Let us RS members sit back quietly while others go chase the muslim boogieman and buy us some time to at-least enjoy the likes of Italia 485 ownership before getting conscripted.

I don't really care that they changed the anthem, but it seems odd to me that it was deemed enough of a priority to be done right now.
Because the MP who introduced the bill is dying of ALS, and they wanted him to be able to witness and participate in the vote.
If it was going to happen eventually anyway, then it's not costing anything it wouldn't have cost eventually, and it's a class move to make it happen while the guy was still around to see it.
Like others have pointed out, it's actually closer to the original version now - think there was this much fuss when the line was changed TO the "sons" version in the first place??
I remember learning it as "and stand on guard, oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee". That line was changed to "from far and wide, oh Canada". Bryan Adams got shit on for singing the previous version once, which of course, was the version he grew up with.
The anthem has changed before. Guarantee it will change again. If you're gonna get bent out of shape every time it happens you're going to live a very sad life.

The anthem should still be taught in school and sung at assemblies, Canada Day and Remembrance Day.
It is, at least at the schools I've been to.
I think it was made mandatory a few years back. You can get the principal in a whole shitload of trouble if you report it to the ministry of education.
The ministry will tell the school district and the school district will freak on the principal. Unless, the school district doesn't give a shit, but they usually do, 'cause bad publicity.
Not exactly anthem ish, but everytime I hear it, it gets me right in the feels............... except for the en français, lol

Lyrics below...........
Something's happening.
There's something in the air.
The world is spinning
a heartbeat faster.
Tomorrow's calling
(can you hear it?)
to people everywhere
Reaching out to you and me --
The future's ours to share.
Set the world in motion.
Together we can catch a rising star.
We can touch tomorrow
Discovering the wonder in our minds and in our hearts.
Together we can touch the sky
Share our dreams and watch them fly
Celebrate it!
Something's happening. Something's happening here.
Can you feel the magic?
Standing here together side by side
New ideas exploding
Touching every moment reaching all our lives.
Together we can touch the sky
Share our dreams and watch them fly
Celebrate it!
Something's happening. Something's happening here.
And now the magic has begun.
The promise of tomorrow
Here for everyone.
(Something's happening, something's happening, something's happening....)
Can you see that the feeling's getting stronger
(...something's happening, something's happening, something's happening...)
reaching out -- touching you -- touching me.
Set the world in motion.
Together we can catch a rising star.
We can touch tomorrow
Discovering the wonder in our minds and in our hearts.
Together we can touch the sky
Share our dreams and watch them fly
Celebrate it!
