Haven't really read too far into the problems regarding infrastructure, cost over runs, etc nor have the athletes got too much press yet.

Beleive Canada is setting their sights at 15-20 medals which would be decent for a summer games.

Phelps qualifies for a record 5th games, and to pad his record medal count.

Really though, I made this post to share this amazing moment which I had never heard of or seen till today, the world and Olympic record for long jump was set in Mexico City in 1968 by American Bob Beamon, it stands as the oldest record in athletics:

China might have a change to sweep every gold medal in olympic weightlifting from 56-85 kg weight class

56 kg: long qinquan

69 kg: liao hui
77 kg: lu xiaojun
85 kg: tian tao

Part of that record has to do with the high altitude in Mexico city. The Rio games are a gong show.

Mcllroy and Spieth both pulled out saying fears for health and safety.

Can't really blame them, also to win a medal isn't really the pinnacle of a golfers career, majors and the masters especially probably weigh far heavier in ones career than going to the olympics.

Also golfers are probably amongst the wealthiest athletes going to the games, unless you had a full security detail all the time it could probably get a little sketchy there

Telus will be showing the games in 4K :awwyeah:

Friend of mine from HS is competing this year so will be sure to watch whichever women's running events she is in.

As for golfers, I don't blame them. Most Olympic athletes really have no glory opportunity aside from the Olympics. The guys pulling out don't need the recognition and will likely play in 4 years where there is no zika threat.

For the record, I can't wait to see how this Olympic is gonna turn into a gong show. Infrastructure and venue problems, pollution concerns, Zika woes, crime, etc. The IOC has too much -- especially their face and reputation -- to lose, and they are pressuring the WHO into submission.

I seriously hope things will turn out fine. But so far, all the evidence is pointing towards at least a somewhat fxxked up game.

I wasn't really referring to PEDs, but more of the practice with scooping young children up by the masses -- often from smaller, poorer, and more remote villages -- and sending them off to children athlete training camps, away from family etc.

I don't particularly want to shxt on China too much in this thread -- or at least, I don't feel like doing so now. But if you do a little research, you'll see why China excels in certain type of Olympic sports.

The irony is, hardly any of the sports that China excels in is commercially lucrative. But what's what your old school authoritarian governments do -- spend millions on programs that prop up the country's "image" to pump out a selected few elite athletes while ignoring the welfare of the masses...

common practice with ex communist countries, pretty much every ex soviet bloc countries used the exact same practices.

plus if you asked some poor ass farmer kid would he rather be a farmer for the rest of his life toiling in obscurity vs an olympic gold medalist...

oly lifting is becoming a lil more lucrative every year with the popularity of crossfit in north america too! you'll see many athletes like klokov touring north america giving out seminars and stuff

^^ Yes, of sure. The old standard ex soviet bloc practice. With Soviet Union being the ideological mentor for Communist China, of course China is doing what his old master taught him.

The obvious problem is, only 1 in a thousand (or less) can meet the cut for Olympic caliber. The rest of the children more or less get sifted out at the provincial or municipal level. If you are lucky enough, you can still land a trainer job back in the same national / provincial training machinery, and you'd still have what we conceive as a "regular" working career. If you don't make the cut and you didn't land yourself a position back in the training machinery, however, you are effectively stuck without any real transferable life skills and your life is fxxked because you don't know anything else.

But alas, I am not really here to shxt on China this time. If anything, I should really be shxtting on the Rio Olympics instead.

on that topic i've watched and listened to a few pod casts in the past month or so discussing PED's and the olympics.

As mentioned, these eastern block countries, especially the USSR had some really fucked up practices when it came to their athletes

it's documented in the kind of prime years of the soviet power, their top-star gymnasts, mostly ages 12-16 were all impregnated by their trainers 2 months prior to the olympics to greatly improve their testosterone and whatever other chemical advantages you gain.

Funny enough that edge was JUST enough to win, as i think they beat out china, or another large state in the gymnastics competitions by literal fractions of points

then of course they all went home and had abortions lol

^Failed you for bumping a 1 year old thread with a 6 month old article.

I just got back from Rio and while I didn't tour the Olympic sites, I did see some of the legacy of the games. The metro is pretty good considering the city's reputation huge trains and the stations are clean and well signed. Tourist map signs are now everywhere and it's easy for non-Portuguese speaking visitors to way-find around. I never visited before this, but from other people's anecdotes crime is much reduced and the streets are cleaned up quite a bit from prior to the Olympics.

There's more to Olympic legacy than empty stadiums. Shit happens. They said the same thing about Beijing and Sochi, heck even Vancouver. They'll keep saying it until Cities with big egos stop bidding for the Owe-lympics.

But seriously...The Daily Mail...? Seriously.

Out of curiosity, what "wasted ruins" does Vancouver have from its olympics MG1? All I can think of is the torch barely being lit (it should be on all the fucking time) and there was some controversy about the Olympic village or wtv apartments and selling those off. The oval is thriving, the Canada line is a huge success. The sea to sky is a beautiful highway to drive now. What were the huge failures?

I think thats partly a result of building mega Olympic parks for the Olympics. It seems like such a cool idea building all brand new venues and having them all together in one big mega complex, but once things go back to real life, they end up unused and out of the way. Vancouver did it right by building city amenity buildings (like the oval) in places that made sense spread around the city in places to house events that would continue to be used after the games were over. Whatever your feelings on the Olympics are, Vancouver was one of the few cities that actually did it right from a future use, legacy, and economic standpoint.

sydney, socchi, rio, etc all did it and as far as i know, most of them are unused now.
