they've been doing this to the DS handhelds since like 2 years ago or so. their reasoning is people who are buying a new DS probably has an old DS already thus a charger is not included.
definitely gonna buy this. a part of me does wish it had bluetooth controllers but i respect that they kept it simple to keep it original feeling and also to keep the price down.

Read somewhere that it was going to retail for $80 in Canada.
As much as I'd love to relive my younger years, I have a feeling that I'd just buy it for nostalgia and never touch it. So I'll pass. Price isn't that great either, unless you really wanted all the games they have to offer.

The thing is powered by USB. Chances are, if you take your 1A or 2A USB phone charger, and plug the NES mini to that USB charger via the USB cable, the unit will get powered up.

Personally, I would expect Nintendo to have a follow up plan ready, and allow the device to play some additional games stored on some sort of external storage. The most obvious method would be to use the thing's built-in USB port to support some sort dock / external storage. From that point onwards, anything is possible.
But in that case, they should have made the NES mini like this:

not everyone knows how to/wants to bother downloading emulators...the majority just wants a plug and play solution. I mean that's why consoles exist.
Nintendo probably haven't been as successful this decade as it has been this past week or so with Pokémon Go and now this ...hope the NX is competitive.
Saw that this morning on my FB feed. Funny enough, it was Snopes that told me first.

No one is losing money over emulation. Or the company's like the ones that make the everdrive or the retron 5 would be sued out of business.

The Everdrive is for people who own a NES but don't want to spend $1000's on games. The Retron5 is for people who have a bunch of systems and games but don't have the room or the inputs to hook up 5 systems to there TV.
The Classic mini is for people that are not already into retro gaming but want to relive there childhood or want to show there kids the games they use to play. People will buy these play them for a bit then they will collect dust. I bet you will see a a lot of these on craigslist 6 months after release.
If you are into retro gaming you will already have a NES or if you are a baller a Analogue Nt.

4chan retro gaming board is the fucking toilet bowl of people who are all about Emulation VS an actual product, mostly because it's populated by broke fucking kids who dont have the $60 to buy an actual NES anyways.
I have the Retron5 and honestly, it kind of blows. the wireless controller is useless, and there is lag with the OEM plug in controllers when playing your carts. The interface is super clunky and slow, etc. etc.
I only wanted the Retron5 because i have a ton of old carts which i like to play from time to time, and with a wall mounted TV it's pretty much out of the question in hooking up the original consoles all the time when friends come over etc. it's also time consuming.
As well, people always say "omg why would i pay XXX when i could emulate"
Because no one wants to play NES,SNES,Genesis games with a 360 controller through a HTPC or sitting at a computer. people want to play these console games as they had in the past, especially people who arent tech savy etc. They want the original goods, not some slapped together emulation machine.
Thats why i think this will appeal to a hugeeee portion of the population.
Ive recently played through some of the games preloaded on here, and imo they dont really appeal to me that much anymore, many of them like Zelda etc. are super difficult and frustrating lol.. but i think your average consumer is going to have a huge nostalgia factor come in to play, and at the very least go hard with this machine in the run up, and during the xmas season.
Actually bought some shares in nintendo today in anticipation for this release/riding the wave of PokemonGo

I have nothing against emulation, I just think it's hilarious that it's being pointed out here as an alternative to this special official product with 30 games built in.
I emulate myself, I have collected every NES and SNES rom, and play them often [using a Super Famicom replica USB controller]. I have also bought retro games on various consoles and PC, and will likely buy this thing.
Sometimes it's good to support the companies that provide you with the things you enjoy. Don't just take, take, take at every opportunity, looking for every possible way to get something for free. This fucking awesome retro gadget comes out and the first thing people say is how you could just emulate and play the games for free... Fucking FailFish

I spent a chunk of change getting an android tv box, wireless bluetooth controllers and paid apps to emulate. There is enough input lag to ruin the experience and I've tried every workaround including configuring my tv refresh rate, using different emulation engines, using a wired usb controller instead of bluetooth and various android hacks. For precise platformers like Mario it feels off. What I learned is that all emulators use different techniques to make games run well. Some are closer to the original (need a lot of CPU horsepower) and some take very aggressive tweaks (great on low power devices) to make it work.
Nintendo treats their catalog games with a lot of care.
Just because it's old and you can run it on a cheapo device doesn't devalue it and I think it's great that Nintendo is making cool retro stuff.

Total agreement here. Castlevania, Simon's Quest, Ghost n' Goblins, Gradius, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario Bros, Zelda I & II are all super difficult. I'm sure a lot of us have played through and finished all / most of the games, but I vividly remember how super frustrating Castlevania / Simon's Quest are when you need to fxxking jump and land on a platform that is only a single character wide, and then a fxxking bat comes out of nowhere and crash through you just as you are about to land. And then you get knocked back, and obviously dies from falling into the abyss.
With some of these games, I actually never understood how people can finish them.

For $60 I kinda want it, but it's missing a lot of games that I want.
Needs Megaman and Contra.
Going to be honest. At first I was excited to hear about this, but the fact that it's got no connectivity to the internet means it's 30 games EMULATED, that's it. I used to LOVE nintendo. I fucking loved it. NES, SNES, Gameboy and Gameboy advanced were all fucking amazing. So I was a nintendo fanboy until 3rd party licensed games started dropping like flies and over to the sony camp. So not hating on the nintendo games, but when you look back I can't justify paying $80 for a Nintendo licensed emulator for 30 games that doesn't include a fucking usb power adaptor. Like, how much of a cash grab does that scream?
It's a buy and collect dust machine, I'm sure for many. Plenty of these to go around so it's not like it's super collectable or anything.
If Nintendo comes out with a mini SNES where you can expand your library then I will consider buying that. That was Nintendo's greatest system of all time in my opinion; it was a machine that nintendo took well beyond the limits of the hardware platform. Thank the superfx chip for that.

When you're thinking of those games, you're probably thinking of Mega Man II and Super C, which are what this thing contains. At least with Mega Man... The first game really wasn't very good at all, the sequel is what made it famous.
Super C is the one I remember playing as well, and probably better than the original, though I haven't made a direct comparison

I am not a collector, but I still have all my old systems from youth and have most of the games included on this mini system. I'm not in the market, but I think it's a Great way to introduce the youth to the old games (instead of just an imulator).
Instead of paying $500+ dollars, just buy a tablet, run an emulator and get a micro-usb adaptor to run a Xbox 360 controller or something

lol you are telling me you are still playing ur NES from the 90s? this thing is just for ppl reliving their childhood hence it's more of a collectible item.. will you actually be spending actual time playing it? i'm sure not.. you probably wouldn't even be talking about NES if they never released this
I bet you have no friends in your same age group?
Most of the NES have 2 players, graphic is not a concern, it's all about beating your friend or team work in the game.

Retro game collecting is huge and lots of people still play nes and other systems. Some old games go for ridiculous amounts of money.

You can go even cheaper and just get a raspberry pi to do the emulation. Hook it up to your TV and you're good to go.
This. Retropie lets you play anyone of like 30 oldschool consoles from atari all the way to like sega genesis.
35 bucks for the raspberry pi
40 bucks for a half dozen controllers for different systems you want to play
a couple hours of your time
And voila I have a library of 1400 game across like 15 consoles.

Since it's a closed system, there's no chance of an update if a flaw is discovered. Which is entirely possible given that this is just a licensed emulator.
I have a feeling the demand for these will tank very quickly once the general population realizes that the game they haven't played in 20+ years isn't quite as great as they remember.

i think the problem is most people have SNES,NES, and Genesis games all kind of muddled in their head, so they think they are getting some amazing games of the past with this NES
imo, the NES has a fairly weak library and the vast majority of the games included here do not interest me, or they did until i actually tried to play them again
Why am I paying ninendo to emulate their own games when I did it myself on an android stick 5 years ago?
6o4__boi
12-28-2016, 02:35 PM
because mass consumers are generally stupid and impulsive when it comes to nostalgic things
i should know, i buy random nostalgic shit all the time and i probably would have bought that, and then regretted it, had it been in stock.
Sell a VHS emulator in limited edition with VHS video quality and rewind/fast forward simulator along with movie bundles from the 80s/90s and I bet it'd be just as popular. For an extra $50 get the deluxe edition that takes mini cassettes and purposely jams the ribbon at random points so that you can take it apart and untangle it just like the good ol' days.

mos_skeeto
01-04-2017, 08:55 AM
When you run emulation on your android, pi, PC, etc. you're running emulation software that has a bunch of hacks to get games to run smoothly.
I haven't looked into the coding of the classic yet but in the past (ex: Virtual Console) Nintendo ran these old games without hacks and that's why they play very well.
For fun, try using a few different engines on your android device. They play all slightly differently. Some drop frames to get it to run smooth, some do it very realistically but you end up lagging framerates a bit, some are just buggy.

Seiken Densetsu 3
All the Donkey Kong Country games
Super street fighter 2/street fighter alpha 2 (one of the two is good enough)

Of the built-in games, I am really only interested in Mario World and Super Punch Out. But the thing is, assuming the console can be / will be hacked to accept other SNES ROM, then the SNES library has a LOT of stuff that I enjoy.

That list of games is barely an essentials list of games. This was their chance to bring Seiken Densetsu 3 to North America and they didn't. Chrono Trigger is missing, Bahamut Lagoon, Tactics Ogre, Tales of Phantasia, Front Mission, Final Fight 2-3, Saturday Night Slam Masters, FUCKIN' BOMBERMAN, Lufia, Breath of Fire.
That list is a god damn shame to the SNES because it had hundreds of amazing games that deserve a spot. Well, this i'll get for collecting as this thing is the embodiment of my childhood in a little box.

Jesus Christ, I thought it was just me, but I found some of the games hard as fuck as well. On the original console, man, this shit was a breeze, but I'm constantly getting my ass kicked in Super Mario World and Super Street Fighter. :fulloffuck:

I have an extra Nintendo Classic console if anyone needs one.
Its European spec. So the box looks different and it doesn't come with a power adapter compared to its NA counter part.
Asking 90 bucks firm.
