Rio 2016 Olympic opening ceremony: What to expect

Don't expect anything too pricey with regards to Friday's spectacle. The budget for the required four ceremonies (opening and closing for the Olympics and Paralympics) was slashed to $55.9 million US from its original $113.9 million price tag.

The environment will have a large role in the overall theme, as would be expected of a nation home to the Amazon rainforest.

Organizers are planning on showcasing Brazil's love of samba and its annual carnival with costumes that celebrate the human figure … by covering up very little.

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen will be involved in some way, but the specifics are murky.

Soccer legend Pele has been offered the honour of lighting the Olympic flame, though he will have to cancel a prior scheduled engagement in order to attend.

What to expect from the 'sexiest' opening ceremony in Olympic history (http://olympics.cbc.ca/news/article/rio-2016-olympic-opening-ceremony-what-expect.html)

I made this thread because the last one got all tainted with discussion about communism.

Hopefully this one can stay on track with posts about athletic accomplishments and maybe a sprinkling of stories about Olympic related theft. :smug:

Yeah it's really weird, I'm usually really into the olympics but but I don't really give a shit about this year either.
I won't be going out of my way to watch them. Mind you, with the summer and nice weather I watch all of about 3 hours of TV a week anyways.

i dont give a shit about the olympics because they are selfish to host it in a country with the zika virus that can be remitted around the world.

Also, the caliber of athletes declined significantly since they do not want to get the zika virus. This is stupid, waste of summer olympics, waiting for 2016 / 2018...

What year do you think this is? :suspicious:

Err, you do realize that Rio was awarded the games in 2009 before anyone had even heard of the Zika virus right? And that it was only really made headlines a few months (not even a year) ago.

Caliber of athletes have declined? Stop pulling shit out of your ass. Other than a few high profile professional athletes who don't need Olympic exposure (The Olympics btw, have traditionally always been about Amateur athletes); the caliber of Athletes has, if anything, increased due to the amount poured in to countries' sport programmes ( who knows, maybe doping?) .

Everyone poo-poos on everyone else's Olympic games. Remember Sochi? Supposed to be the worst ever Olympics and was going to be hit by terrorists. Vancouver? Some idiot in the British press claimed it was going to be the worst ever before it even started. London 2012 - "oh it'll never live up to Beijing". blah blah blah.

Corruption, doping scandals I give you that, but that's the state of our world today. 20-30 years ago this shit was going on as well guaranteed (East Germany in the 80s, China in the 90s). We're just much more aware of it because of mass media/internet. In 1980, the Olympics in Moscow was boycotted by 65(!) countries. In 1984, it was paid back by the Soviet bloc who boycotted the LA Olympics. Palestinian terrorists actually killed the Israeli athletic contingent in Munich in 1976. So I think we've had a pretty good run so far.

Some funny stuff going back and forth on twitter with Ray Ferarro, James Duthie and Dejan Kovacevic.
DK said Vancouver was the scarriest Olympics he reported at, citing a 200+ people riot that smashed store windows, thugs urinating on an elderly couples's flag, and barbed wire around the Olympic torch.

I'm entirely aware of this. There was also the same kind of shit happening in Sochi with toilets being installed without dividers and such. It was hilarious.

In the end, did any of it matter to the enjoyment of the spectacle of the games? Or the impressiveness of the Athletes' performances? Not for me. But maybe if you're looking to make a smart-aleky political statement and pile on the flavour of the month, Brazil, then I suppose this is also the perfect opportunity for it.

In two months I guarantee all will be forgotten and we'll go back to bitching about Donald Trump until November. But yeah, if an entire country's Olympic team gets murdered during the games like in '72, then yeah, I'll have to apologize and agree that it was the worst games.

Are you actually going to qualify why this would affect your enjoyment of the televised games because of this? Or are you just going to post link after link of petty crimes and inconveniences?

That's like saying "I won't watch the Superbowl because Donald Trump". Or, "Fuck the World Series, Black lives Matter!!"

If anything the spectacle of this is enhanced by it taking place in a 3rd world country.

I've never been a huge fan of the Olympics for a few reasons, but I still don't get why they don't just host them in Greece every time (at least the summer ones)? Build the facilities once, Greece can bring in some money (last I checked they needed it) and everyone doesn't have to go through the chaos of things not being ready every time. Maybe let different countries "host" it by coming up with the ceremonies and some of the themed stuff, and boom done.

Im in the same boat, in that I dont really feel excited about watching the games this year either for some reason.

But I bet you within a week, the tune of this thread will completely change as soon as we start hearing stories about what the Canadians have done, and catch some clips and montages on the news. This year they're in a reasonable time zone too!

There's something about cheering on your country in the Olympics that always hits you in the feels and draws you in. Im so fucking proud to be a Canadian I can't help but watch and cheer.

I always like coming into the RS official threads to catch up on everything that happened that day. So many of you are so good at collecting videos and articles, its nice to catch up on that, and on the discussion about it. Don't let me down RSbros

Prior to the Olympics there was a feature on her on TSN. I watched and thought "damn that's so cool to get there at 16. She'll have tons of fun and get those nerves out of the way for 2020 and 2024"

Now she's pretty much a lock for flag bearer for closing ceremonies in the first week of competition barring someone (or the women's soccer team) earning gold somewhere. Even then, I'd still give the flag to Oleksiak. Amazing story.

CBC announcer Elliotte Friedman confused Phelps, Lochte | SI.com (http://www.si.com/olympics/2016/08/12/elliotte-friedman-cbc-michael-phelps-ryan-lochte-rio-olympics)

Well, sometimes life runs you over, then steals your credit card. Friedman says, “I couldn’t get my head straight.” He tells me about his mistake in the next race. He confused Oleksiak with another Canadian swimmer, which tells you his state of mind—there were no other Canadians in the race.

whats everyones opinion on medal counts?

Canadians generally ranks by total count of gold/silver/bronze, while most other countries rank by gold totals.

technically, counting gold only should probably be the ranking system. shows how many events that country actually won. some countries wont even celebrate a silver. but we as canadians i think are more caring of all our athletes and want to see as many on the podium as possible.

I want to see a count that shows how many different people won medals, it skews things pretty badly when 1 guy wins 4 swimming or running events.

To me the medals really only mean something if I'm very invested into the event. Olympic hockey it's pretty much gold or fuck off, but in the summer Olympics I'm just happy for the people that win something that weren't necessarily supposed to win anything.

imo total golds should be how its ranked. then silver and bronze should be used as 2 tiebreakers.

I think that's opposite. the official Olympic ranking uses gold medals as the marker. 1 gold > 89528248288 silver

Canadians in general are just happy to see people participate (bleh)

Opting for a strategy that increases your chances of winning is not cowardly. It’s smart and, actually, brave, because you’ll have to endure comments like this from the spoiled, take-victory-for-granted brats like Hope Solo if it actually works. It’s easy to play the little kid int he playground, who gets condescendingly patted on the head and sent away once it succumbs to its inventible loss. It’s far harder to stand up and fight. To dare is to do, as the saying goes.

Hope Solo is the coward. She’s the one who refuses to take ownership for being beaten by the better team.

In lobbing these untrue characterizations, she’s devaluating Sweden’s worthy accomplishment in the worst kind of way. I don’t care if she’s upset. I don’t care if she only meant it in the moment. This isn’t what the Olympics is about.

Bentz, one of the swimmers involved in the incident, declined to comment when reached by The New York Times on Sunday. Lochte initially denied reports of the robbery through Olympic officials.

He later told NBC News that one of the men had put a cocked gun to his head.

“We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge — no lights, no nothing, just a police badge — and they pulled us over,” he said. “They pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground — they got down on the ground. I refused — I was like, we didn’t do anything wrong, so — I’m not getting down on the ground.

“And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead, and he said, ‘Get down,’ and I put my hands up. I was like, whatever. He took our money, he took my wallet — he left my cellphone, he left my credentials.”

Some ego Lochte has. Apparently he's too much of a man to admit he was shook.

Agree 100%. Things didn't change for Canada until they adopted a more dynamic mindset. They had their chances (I can remember at least 3-4 A1 chances in the German box) but they either muffed it or shot right at the German keeper/defender. Mind you, that was also after Germany decided to sit back as well.

That said, I was pretty impressed by Fletcher. Unlike most of her teammates, she seemed to have the patience, ball skill, and vision to really free up the forwards for chances. She was least guilty of just panicking and giving the ball away/out of bounds. Scott looks like she's going to be a great offensive option going forward as well. Even though this one sucked, it looks like Canada is in good hands going forward.

All those friendlies (losing) with the US is starting to pay dividends :P

French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie was reduced to tears on the podium Tuesday as Brazilian fans relentlessly booed the athlete, who won the silver medal in men’s pole vaulting.

On Monday night, Lavillenie was beat by Brazil’s Thiago Braz Da Silva, who cleared 6.03 metres to win gold in the event.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach condemned the “shocking behaviour” of the crowd in Rio, calling the booing “unacceptable at the Olympics.”

But Lavillenie isn’t the first athlete to be booed at the games; in fact, the crowds in Rio de Janerio have been especially vocal during many sporting events.

Good sportsmanship has been the norm at just about every Olympics. It's just sad when you see dipshits like that dude who wouldn't shake hands with another fellow athlete, 'cause they were from a country that was at war with them. Thankfully that sort of shit doesn't happen often.

The only shitty part of the Olympics is the cheating (drug use) and poor officiating.

Will there be ever a time where an athlete will say, "No, the other athlete deserved to win. They deserve the Gold. I will not be part of this bullshit."

Proof that the Olympics is as much about sex as it is about sports and money:

Around 450,000 condoms have been distributed among athletes in the Olympic Village - three times more than for the London Games in 2012.

The International Olympic Committee said part of the reason was because 100,000 female condoms will be available for the first time, along with 350,000 condoms for men. About 175,000 packets of lubricant are also being supplied.

Lochte robbed at gun point along with two other swimmers lol

Pretty safe to say the olympics won't be going back to South America

Good news South America can have the Olympics again because the American swimmers where lying to cover up their douche bag behavior.

Also I don't see whats so wrong about not shaking an opponents hand in Judo. If you see what happens in other combat sports that's nothing.

A Brazilian police official told The Associated Press that American Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte fabricated a story about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro.

A Brazilian television network aired surveillance video from the gas station at the time of the incident that appears to show the swimmers in an argument with staff.

Lochte is already on US soil. He probably paid for a flight out of Rio while the other two were on their scheduled flight.

A Rio Games spokesman defended the swimmers, saying they were just kids who were having fun and made a mistake.

"These kids tried to have fun, they tried to represent their country to the best of their abilities," Rio 2016 spokesman Mario Andrada told reporters.

"They competed under gigantic pressure. Let's give these kids a break. Sometime you take actions that you later regret. They had fun, they made a mistake, life goes on."

WTF! They aren't 12 years old. Hold adults accountable for their actions. Just because they are Olympians, they aren't above the law.

Rio Paralympics 2016: Organisers two weeks behind on travel grant payments - BBC Sport (http://www.bbc.com/sport/disability-sport/37074810)

Rio 2016's organising committee is two weeks late in paying 8m euros (£7m) in grants to national Paralympic bodies.

The grants cover the travel costs for competing athletes and officials.

...
It is thought as many as 50 nations may be unable to afford to send athletes to the Games, which start on 7 September.

Wealthy countries can probably pay the way for their athletes, but poor countries probably don't give a crap nor can they afford to send their Paralympians.

There have been studies that showed athletes who win silver are oftentimes more disappointed than those who win bronze, because silver medallists don't feel like they won silver, but rather like they lost gold.

^ I literally had that thought yesterday, and it makes a lot of sense. Bronze medals are often fought for with the loser going away with nothing; the stakes are high, and competitors will fight tooth and nail to get it. Silver, on the other hand, can primarily be looked at as a consolation prize. It stings more knowing gold was THAT close.

bobbinka
08-18-2016, 06:36 PM
it's especially true for sports where the top two compete only to determine who wins gold, and then 3rd and 4th compete for bronze. here's USA in 2010 "winning" silver:

https://freezethepuck.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/70590295.jpg

at least in things like running and swimming, all competitors in the final heat have a shot at winning any medal.

From his interview afterward, it sounds like De Grasse was more upset with himself for not running a better time.

with team sports.. you win gold, you dont "win silver"
thats why you win the bronze

if that made any sense.. that picture of Patrick Kane sums it up when you play for gold and lose.

however, you look at Team Finland and Teemu Selanne from 2014 sochi.. the excitement on players faces because you WIN a bronze
