Now that Genesis is Hyundai's luxury brand, there's seemingly no room for a stick-shift, rear-drive performance coupe.

After eight years in production, the rear-drive Hyundai Genesis Coupe is no more. It's a move that was inevitable, given that Hyundai now has a new luxury brand called Genesis, and selling cars called "Genesis" under two different brands would be bizarre. Hyundai's first (and so far only) sports car doesn't have an immediate replacement, but a more luxurious coupe from the Genesis brand will eventually hit the market.

The news of the Genesis Coupe's cancellation was first confirmed by the Globe and Mail last week, which reports that a new Genesis luxury coupe could arrive by 2021. We previously reported that people within Hyundai want Genesis to make a halo sports car, though the company doesn't have a definitive timeline for such a vehicle.

"A new, more sophisticated and luxurious coupe appropriate for the new Genesis brand is currently under development," a Hyundai spokesperson told The Truth About Cars. A BMW M4-rivaling luxury coupe tuned by Hyundai's "N" performance division is said to be in the works, but it's unclear if this is the Genesis Coupe replacement alluded to.

Despite checking all the right boxes–inexpensive, rear-wheel drive, stick shift, 348-hp V6–the Genesis Coupe never captured car enthusiast hearts the way that its competitors did. Hopefully the tepid response to the Genesis Coupe hasn't turned Hyundai/Genesis away from building more performance cars in the future, because we'd love to see what the company has up its sleeve.

This car looked good on paper, then I drove one and it made my penis really soft.

oh I had no clue that Genesis brand existed. They talked about it for decades but never came in reality.

Its only been a thing since they released the revamped genesis sedan and the new equus.

I think this was always their plan with the coupe to move it more upscale.

I think the design was just not the cup of tea for most tuners.

On the other hand, the new genesis sedans are not bad for the price.

I drove the Genesis and GTI back to back and I had more fun in the GTI. My car brain is telling me the Genesis should be more fun due to rear-wheel drive but I couldn't get into it.

yup, this.

Drove one when shopping for a new ride a few years ago (ended up buying a GTI) despite what should have delivered a satisfactory result......it was not even turgid.....

Is it really gone, or are they just going to replace it with something with a different name?

Y'know, I can't think of a single time where I saw one of those cars and it made me take notice or turn my head. Probably telling.

If you read the article they are going to create a fancy new coupe for their genesis brand and launch it in 2021*

Right, but that will likely be pricey since it's going to be a luxury car. Fingers crossed they come up with something under the Hyundai brand to keep it cheaper.

There was the kia stinger concept from a few years back.

That could easily replace hyundais offering and let the coupe move upscale.

The sedan is great. I traded in my 2011 2.0T Sonata back in Feb for a 2015 5.0 Genesis. It's incognito and nobody knows what it is. Luxury without being a showoff... After 15 years of driving some kind of 2L Turbo, it's great to have torque again...

I testdrove a new 2.0T 6sp in 2011. It was OK - but there was a throttle delay between changing gears. It made driving manual unenjoyable and was annoying enough to cross the car off my list.

Drove a 3.8GT in 2015, it was a nice ride and had some good pep. But realistically I wouldn't spend $40K on it, and they got rid of the 2.0T

To be fair, the 3.8GTs were being sold for $30K at the end of the year. It was a lot of car for the money, but too bad I need a 4 door now.
