A Good Samaritan says he was assaulted after he tried to stop a racial tirade against two SkyTrain passengers.

The Good Samaritan, who asked to be identified as “Barney”, says he saw a man hurl racial insults at an Asian woman and her son at the Broadway-City Hall Canada Line station Saturday afternoon.

Barney said he was spat on and assaulted after following the man into the station. He said he suffered a minor cut and bruises.

He captured part of the incident on camera and a family member posted photos and video on Facebook.

Transit Police spokesperson Anne Drennan said they are investigating and have “a very good lead.” They are asking the man to “do the right thing and turn himself in.”

Police caution citizens to not put themselves in harm’s way, but Drennan but did commend Barney for stepping in “to make sure that this didn’t go any further.”

First thing I thought when I saw the FB post in my feed with this was that I've seen this guy on Skytrain before. Never heard him making racial slurs, but the way he was acting on the car that day, made me make sure I was aware where he was in relation to me.

I don't know even how to describe it, other than "shifty/abnormal." You know when you see someone and you know they're trouble or untrustworthy? It's that subtle gut feeling that something isn't right.

I think you have the order of events a little twisted.
It looks like he started recording midway - after he got involved. Maybe as evidence just in case, or maybe as an additional form of deterrence. Some people will drop it, say a few bad words, and leave when they're being recorded. Obviously that didn't happen in this situation, but looks like the video was at least helpful.

If security were at the station things wouldn't have gotten this far I assume.

Lastly, in this day and age, not a lot of people stop to give info as witnesses and shit. Car accidents, incidents like this, etc., more people just don't wanna get involved. Video footage helps. Not everyone just wants to get likes on WSHH you know.

Transit police say a man has been arrested and charged with assault and uttering threats following an assault at a Vancouver SkyTrain station.

They say the incident began when a woman accidentally bumped into a man as they were getting off a bus at the Broadway-City Hall SkyTrain station on Aug. 20.

Police say the 50-year-old man then allegedly tripped the woman, made racist comments towards her, and challenged people to fight when they tried to intervene.

They say the man also charged and grabbed a passerby, and pushed him into a glass wall before leaving the station.
