Infiniti just announced variable compression ratio technology.

It can adjust top dead center to alter the compression ratio from 8:1 to 14:1.

I like how the compression is the same as Saab's version of variable compression.

Neet idea but it just means more moving parts to fail.

yeah but just like 1960s muscle cars with carburetor & push rod engine isn't necessarily more reliable than Civic with i-VTEC, I'm sure the benefit would worth the cost of risk.

maybe it's not a good engine for a typical father & son weekend engine rebuild project though lol

Inb4 all the cheap owners run 87 and don't actually get more that 8:1

Fuck that shit. Way cooler ways to raise compression.

The "T" in Infiniti VC-T stands for turbo...

Neat idea, but I'm gonna guess the first 3 generations or so will have all kinds of problems with component failures costing extremely large amounts of money to fix.

Yup. Pretty sure that big heat sink in the front isn't an air cooled radiator.

I'm not an engineer or anything but this is to me is a technology marvel.

Infiniti VC-T - First Variable Compression Engine (http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/car-technology/news/a30392/infiniti-vc-t-variable-compression-turbo/)

essentially it's variable ratio compression to deliver better fuel economy and power when you need it.

The million dollar question is -- would you be willing to fork out your own hard-earned $$$ to be the first guinea pig to beta-test this new technology?

It is indeed a marvel, one that is now 6 month old news, that timpo posted on here long ago:

I thought it stood for Timpo. Anyway...

If they can do it without pinging there's a potential benefit.
