: Where do you all purchase your mattresses?

The queen size is proving to be too small for me and the miss. Thinking of upgrading to the king size. The first thing I can think of is Sleep Country and their song playing in my head, but their online rating is terrible.

Also, do you typically haggle when shopping for mattresses? I have done some haggling before at furniture shop but not sure if people typically do it when shopping for mattresses.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Don't buy a mattress based on the store, buy one based on the price. More money does not equal better sleep. Understand that the mattress industry is a giant scam so try to give them as little money as possible. Go to websites of big retailers and look for mattresses based on your budget whether it's a regular priced item or a big $$$ item that was marked down a hefty amount.

Don't listen to things like 'coil count' or 'gel cool foam inserts' etc. Your body can't tell those things apart. All it can gauge is whether the mattress puts the right amount of pressure on the spine or not.

You can haggle on pricing but probably unlikely if you're looking at one with a huge markdown.

The shittiest thing with mattress shopping is that it's hard to cross shop / price match because each retailer specifically asks the manufacturer to create 'unique mattresses' just for them when in reality they take one mattress and alter it enough to give it a slightly different name so Sleep Country and The Brick can have the exact same mattress that's been re-skinned and would fool everyone and they can't be price matched because they're 'technically' different.

TL;DR: I hate mattress shopping. Thank fuck they last years so it's not something to do often.

I ended up buying a $2000 mattress for $850 because it was on sale. I laid on it for 10 minutes and moved around. Felt good and no complaints on my back. Would never buy at regular price. My budget was set to $900 so this one met my criteria.

Good luck

Anywhere but The Brick.....I just don't like how they treat people hearing the stories from them.

And always test out the bed you want,i'm so happy the sales man told me to get a firm bed so it'll have good back support vs feeling like you're sleeping on 20 blankets.

and i'm sure if you have sex with your girlfriend it'll kinda suck having a bed with no bounce ;)

GS8 outlined everything I came here to post.

The mattress industry is a fucking joke, and like he said it's virtually impossible to price match due to the same model being branded somthing different from store to store.

I spent about 20 hours reading up on mattresses and learning about quality etc. I ended up going to sears and spending about an hour and a half on different matresses until I found he one I wanted. Was a king tight top firm, the mattress by itself was $1300

Enter the getting bent over and fucked in the ass portion:

In order to get any sleep guarantee (ie. you ducking hate you're mattress and you can't sleep another night on it) you need to A) buy a mattress cover from the retailer you're buying the mattress from (king covers are obviously substantially more expensive than the rest) and sometimes B) pay additional for the sleep guarantee (i.e. The "privilege to return it)

I ended up buying a matresss cover because who's to say my $1300 mattress was good enough after laying on it for 20 minutes. Little good the cover did cause one night I had the flu and went out and got shit faced and puked all over the end of my bed and the cover, needless to say, didn't help.

The sears guy who sold me mine was also slimey as fuck and kept telling me the deal was only on once a year, maybe twice, and I was getting like $800 off right now. I went back to the exact same store 3-4 times after buying mine and the price never changed. I even confronted the guy about it and he said it was a model that was being discontinued but the price would never be below what I paid, sure.

The biggest initial decision to make is what type of mattress you want.

Firmness and the top cushion are two different things.

For firmness you have soft, medium, firm

For tops, there is tight top, no additional padding between the mattress and coils

Euro top/pillow top, both have a varying degree of additional padding on top of the actual frame I can't remember which one has more but it can be a very substantial amount of material added.

Read up, take your time, and weigh your options in terms of sleep guarantees etc.

Good luck

Thanks for all the help. I hate the thought of shopping for mattresses and your opinions further confirmed my notion that this industry is a slimey one. Well, we will visit several places and hopefully find one that we like and fits within our budget.

I went with the Ikea natural latex mattress way back when. Still holding up. I really wanted a pure natural latex mattress, but they were way too expensive. Plus, not many places carry true natural latex. Most places lie about their products. I found a place on 4th avenue in Kits that had pure natural latex mattress. But thousands of dollars, not just one or two....... yikes!

Anyway, the Ikea natural latex was a hybrid. Not much off gassing, if you're into that kind of shit. I'm too old to care about off gassing. If I was susceptible to chemicals, I would've died ages ago. Smelling all kinds of chemicals from working on cars and shit, lol.

Anyway, check out Ikea, you'll be pleasantly surprised. They have sales on mattresses twice, maybe three times a year.

Also, check into mattress covers. There are so many types, but the more expensive ones with air tight zipper systems will protect your investment. Plus they keep nasty bugs and other things from ruining your mattress.

EDIT: Just a side note/after thought, whathaveyou........

Got one of these and very happy with its performance. It does what it is designed to do, albeit for only 20 fricken minutes at a time. If you can't get 'er done in 20 minutes, there's something wrong. My two bits.

I also recommend Costco - because you can return it if your back decided it didn't like the mattress. I've had two mattresses from them and so far they've been value for money. Both were Sealy, one a euro top queen and the other a tight top twin.

For those of you who shopped at Costco, did they actually have all these mattresses in-store for you to try? I mean they do have quite a selection online but I just don't recall seeing an area with mattresses to try on when shopping at Costco.

Bought mine from Seahorse on Kingsway/Rupert. They're known for their firm mattresses that hold up well over the years. I've had the same firm Seahorse mattress for the past 11 years and it still maintains a very good firmness.

Euro top/pillow top, both have a varying degree of additional padding on top of the actual frame I can't remember which one has more but it can be a very substantial amount of material added.

Actually they both vary. The difference between the two is purely aesthetic. A euro top has the padding that blends in with the edges of the mattress to look seamless whereas a pillow top looks more 'half assed' as it just sits right on top with no seams to connect it to the edges.

I also recommend Costco - because you can return it if your back decided it didn't like the mattress. I've had two mattresses from them and so far they've been value for money. Both were Sealy, one a euro top queen and the other a tight top twin.

I just wanted to add that you can buy a non euro / pillow top mattress and instead buy a euro / pillow top COVER that fits over the mattress. Reason being is that if you bought a mattress with a fixed pillow / euro top and it starts to sag, you are SOL whereas if it's a cover, then you can just pull it off and replace. Euro / Pillow tops also add $100s to the price.

HOWEVER, most of the people who complain about premature sagging euro / pillow tops are usually heavy people so don't let it sway you from considering a euro / pillow top if you have an average build.

EDIT!

I had the DC61 (I think?) which was similar to yours (minus the mattress moniker). The charge time to use time was annoying as hell to me and I returned it after a week. I wasn't even getting 20min out of a charge despite the charging instructions. I was sad because it was such a handy alternative when bringing out my Dyson Canister became cumbersome :(

I purchased my mattress from this warehouse location in North Vancouver. I do no regret it one bit. It's your own personal mattress he makes for you when you see him. It's completely organic compared to the memory foams you see at Sleep Country. He'll compile, build and customize how much memory foam you and also your partner needs and check your alignment of your spine. He's an older guy and has dedicated himself for decades.

Tempted to buy one from Costco online. The only issue is not being able to try it on beforehand. I know Costco is pretty good with return but could still be a hassle to bring it there. I suppose I could try similar mattresses at other shops before ordering one online at Costco.

I have a Costco $6-700 deal. I really like it, but with two people on the bed we actually both get a sore back. I mean, maybe thats my beds issue (No box spring, low lying bed) but it can't seem to support our weight. (I'm 190, she's 125). Anyhow, at least at Costco you can always return it.

Got mine from the Brick actually.
Was about $1000 delivered with a box spring. I don't think I will go back to the brick again, poor sales tactics, sold me a full box spring (rather have the 1/2 size one) and really didn't help me at all. Forced me to sign up for their cc to get the deal and paying it off was a hassle.

Drive around and you're bound to find one on the streets or in an alley somewhere ... j/k.

Went with good old Sleep Country. Can't beat their price. They were pretty good with their warranty. Bought a set, had it replaced under warranty due to indentation (within 10 years). Then the replacement one developed an indentation at about year 7, got that replaced and tried a similar priced, foam one. So, as long as I keep on finding indentations within 10 years warranty, I shouldn't have to worry about buying a mattress for the rest of my life.

Surprised more people aren't suggesting the online foam mattresses like Casper, Endy, Novo-something something, etc. There are tonnes of them and they all run around $1k for a Queen/King. By most accounts they are nearly as nice as Tempur-pedics for a lot less money. The return policies are really generous as well.

Only thing stopping me is that I'm a very warm sleeper and these mattresses tend to hold a bit too much heat for me.

We're on the hunt for a new queen sized mattress and we came upon the Zinus branded ones on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.ca/Zinus-Memory-Green-Mattress-Queen/dp/B0766BV9FM/

I was a bit apprehensive about buying such a cheap mattress, but according to Sleep Like The Dead, they get pretty good reviews and ratings across the board: Unbiased Zinus Mattress Reviews and Ratings 2018 : Spa Sensations, Night Therapy, Best Price, Slumber 1 : Memory Foam : Spring Bed (http://www.sleeplikethedead.com/memory-foam-nitetherapy.html)

Does anyone have any experience with this brand?

We were also looking at the bed frame that comes packaged with it (on the Amazon link) and people mention the use of a "bunkie board"

Does anyone that currently sleep on a memory foam mattress use a bunkie board? We're looking into this, because the Ikea slats that we currently have are a little over 2" apart from each other, and other websites state that memory foam mattresses shouldn't have slats that are more than 2" apart because it allows the mattress to sag in between the slats.

So, I had a bit of a bed shuffle - my brother moved out of town but did not bring his frame, just his mattress. I didn't have a frame, but wrong size matttres... long story short, I ended up shopping for a new queen size bed.

After going to the Bay, Sleep Country, Casper Store (W4th and Vine, newly opened) and Seahorse (yeah, no thanks), I ended up ordering a Silk and Snow Hybrid (coil with memory foam top) as it was similar to the Casper Wave Hybrid but 1/4th of the price ($850 for S&S vs $3150 for Casper Wave Hybrid). That arrived, and set up quite nicely on the frame. Firm, with a bit of plush on the top. Seems quite supportive, but edge support was lacking - sagged badly when I sat on the side of the bed to get ready or put on my socks. Was quite happy with the price I paid ($850 + GST only) overall.

A friend throws in a wrench - he knows this lady who takes mattresses from showhomes/sales suites/staging companies once they're done with them and sells them really cheap. They're basically new, and tend to be bed in boxes (Casper, Endy, Douglas, etc). I went and took a look, and will be returning my Silk and Snow once the minimum 30 days has passed as I feel like her mattresses are a much better deal. Willing to take the risk of no warranty.

I ended up with a Logan and Cove Queen (I think it's the medium firm?) for $375, no taxes. One tiny stain, but I don't care since I am using a mattress protector and sheets. Similar to the Silk and Snow but better edge support, and feels more plush on top due to the pillow top. My friend has a Douglas, he got it for $250 for a King size, and it was quite firm with no bounce as it has no coils and just foam. I would be happy with either, but I prefer the hybrid coil for more "umph" during certain moods. Just had my first night on the Logan and Cove, it slept cool and I felt well rested and supported. Just need to get used to it as it is very thick (14 inches) and my first step down took some adjusting.

As per my previous doubts regarding the mattresses in a box my wife and I recently stayed with some friends who have either an endy or Casper in their spare bedroom, slept on it for 3 nights. Pretty damn comfy!

Not sure if I’d buy one still for my personal mattress as I’m not sure of the longevity of them but definitely no complaints in the short stint

So subjective! Growing up i'm used to sleeping on Sea Horse branded mattresses and no not the ultra like a rock one but still fairly firm when you compare to traditional western mattresses.

When I moved a year ago it was time to buy a new one and figure why not give a box one a try. Knowing that I came from a firmer mattress I decided to go with Casper because a lot of the complaints I read about them were that it was too firm. Tried it for the 100 nights, was it comfy? Well yes it was but this is not what is firm. I have no idea what some people are used to sleeping on, again subjective but this was no where close to what I'd even call remotely firm. I literally would be sunk in it and would take extra effort to get off the bed because I was sunk.

With said my vote is the Diamond mattress from Sea Horse. It's their most expensive one and is in or around $1000 for a Queen. One side is as firm as concrete and the other side is medium firm.

After having slept on a Seahorse for 10+ years, I can't sleep on anything else as comfortably as my firm Seahorse. My fiancee doesn't like firm mattresses, so we're sleeping on a memory foam mattress right now. It's ok, but definitely not as good as my old Seahorse. I always have such a good night's sleep whenever I go back home to my parents and sleep on my old trusty Seahorse

I use a hard foam Ikea one and it’s actually pretty decent but it’s no Seahorse

If you are concerned about Endy and such, Sealy has a mattress that is the competition for these. It's called the Cocoon and has 2 firmness levels. They are an all memory foam mattress and can be ordered online or from a showroom. If you go to the showroom you can try the firmness before you buy.

Berz out.

You were always able to try one in person at EQ3 as well. You can also try most of the other big ones in certain stores just look it up. I know when i was looking along South Granville had Endy, Casper, and another big one I forget that you could try. But honestly trying a mattress in a store doesn't mean anything because no matter how comfy you think it is your body takes weeks sometimes months to adjust before you truly know which does make the 100 day trials tempting for that reason alone.

Went to the Casper store today to check them out. The hybrid model (springs below memory foam) feels more supportive and comfortable than the all foam. Not cheap though... $1,400, plus a base of some sort. Add in tax and you are looking at $2,000 for a bed in a box.

I was reading that all-foam mattresses make other activities in the bed other than sleep more difficult...

Look at Silk + Snow, their hybrid model is similar to Casper Hybrid but 850 instead of 1400+ - or check FB marketplace for the mattress lady (forget her name). Logan & Cove also similar, hybrid coil/foam, and what I have now (see my review a few posts above).

Can confirm hybrid mattresses are better than foam mattresses for fun time :ifyouknow:

Douglas is firmer, for all-foam mattresses. Otherwise I think a hybrid would provide more support.

Yah I was looking at the Logan and Cove online since it is a hybrid. Going to see if any stores locally carry it to see if I can try it out.

I'm wondering how Logan & Cove and the Casper Hybrid would last over a 5 to 7 year lifespan. Obviously they have warranties, but it probably doesn't cover if they just become uncomfortable.

Jesus Logan and Cove is pretty pricey in comparison to the others. But that might be due to the hybrid and the others are just foam. Logan and Cove has a sister brand called Recore (https://www.recorebed.ca/?utm_source=novosbed.com&utm_medium=banner&_ga=2.129372684.1694083928.1565661005-940186083.1565661005)
The landing page says: "Maximum comfort for peak performance, Latex mattresses.." :ifyouknow:
Are there any other mattresses to consider that is good for sleep and fun time? In addition to that, any one got any reccos for bed frames? I'm looking to upgrade from a very squeaky Ikea bed.

It's less than the Casper Hybrid/Casper Wave Hybrid - which I find ridiculous in pricing. At that price, I'm buying the Westin Heavenly bed!

Hybrids are always more - Silk + Snow is $850 for a queen hybrid, Logan & Cove is $999. Extra two inches (12" vs 14") for $150.

I kind of like the latex mattresses, but have no idea where to get them locally.

For cheaper mattresses, check out Debbie on the FB Marketplace who sells mattresses - she has a few listings up including Hamuq, Logan & Cove etc.

I vote for Seahorse too. I switched to Seahorse during my university days because I wore heels all the time and had a tendency to carry my backpack on one shoulder so I ended up with mild back pain. It took about 2 weeks to get accustomed to the hardness and my back problem went away. I've been using Seahorse for 15+ years and I can't live without my mattress! I will actually miss my mattress when I'm on vacation.

It's been treating me well, so far so good. I get a good night's sleep, and my back/hips feel good. A bit warm for me when we have the IKEA Rosendun mattress protector (https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/rosendun-mattress-protector-30260483/) on, might be because of our duvet combined with less breathability.

Did you guys go with the "Medium Plush" or "Luxury Firm" models? Hard to find any info on how plush and soft the medium is. I'm a side sleeper so I don't need anything too hard, but I hate really soft mattresses because they don't provide proper support. Both my wife and I are pretty light.

Mine is the luxury firm as well. I prefer it over the Medium Plush as I'm a bigger guy and wanted a bit more support, but the missus is 120(?) lbs and she is fine with the amount of sink in the mattress as well. The first few inches in the Logan & Cove kind of provide you with the cradling and then the other foams and springs come into play to support.

I'm only 150 lbs, so glad to hear that the luxury firm isn't too hard for your wife. I like to have a bit of sink, but have the support that many soft mattresses don't provide. Of course, every person is different, so the only thing I can do is order it and give it a shot. Just hoping it doesn't feel like I'm sleeping on the ground!

To update this, we ended up buying a stearns and foster mastress from Costco, king size

In my research this rebranded Kirkland searns abs foster seems to be the equivalent of their $3200 in-house model. We paid $1600 I believe. Costco worth every penny imo. Their “white glove” service which is contracted out was amazing and I give the two guys credit for getting the mattress into our bedroom as it’s up 2 flights of stairs abs with an almost 60 deg corner at the top of the stairs Lolol.. guys were champs though gave em $50. Mattress is amazing abs fuck our sleeps have dramatically improved from our 9-10 year old mattress. I have instantly felt more rested every night since getting it even if I don’t have a super great sleep.

We also ended up buying a new Duvet from Canadian down and feather co. Their “XL king all season” duvet, 850 loft, hudderite down, etc. Fuck it is ducking amazing!!! It was not cheap (regular price for the XL king is 1200 + tax) but figured ball out on somthing like this once and not worry about it. It comes with a 30 year warantee and my wife who was sleeping before with like 4 blankets including a cheapo Costco duvet and like 3 throws because she’s always cold can sleep with just the new duvet now and it regulates temps enough that I’m fine with it as well.

But yea, the online selection from Costco is crazy abs their delivery/return policy is worth every penny imo.

Thanks Hondaracer for the update. It reminds me that I should provide an update as well.

I was looking to purchase a new mattress exactly a year ago and almost pulled the trigger on a Logan & Cove.

We ended up skipping the "bed in a box" and getting a mattress from Simmons Mattress Gallery on Broadway. Hybrid mattress with 1" latex, on top of some foam, on pocket coils. Made locally in Surrey. This mattress weighs a ton - one of the delivery guys almost had a heart attack bringing it into our condo unit.

It is a bit firmer than I am used to, but my wife and I love it and have been sleeping way better over the past year. No issues 11 months in. We use Casper pillows which are still good after 2 years of use.

I've got a new washer/dryer being delivered in a few weeks so I'll do that. I've been hesitant due to the top load washer I've got because I won't want it wrecked, and the dryer is a bit iffy with some bizarre electronics going wonky.

Looks like I’m searching for a new mattress after purchasing one 2 years ago. A friend works at the Fairmont, and we used their discount to purchase a “Fairmont” mattress. They apparently sell them for about 3k and we got it for around $7-800 if I recall. When it arrived I was so pissed I hadn’t bought one sooner. 2 years later, it’s sacked right out (big euro top thing). I’m not that heavy at 185lb. My side has a bloody hole, but my wife’s side is like normal. It’s a stearns and foster luxury plush euro too deal.

I was having pretty bad back pain every morning lately so I flipped it foot to head, and had my first great sleep in months, while my wife slept in the hole. Lol.

Time to pay some big bucks I guess. I’ve had the basic Costco euro too. It didn’t last long either. Honda racers thing sounds intriguing. I’m tempted to shell out some big coin and get a Beautyrest Black. A few friends have them and swear by them. Considering how much I love sleep and literally can’t do without it (I’m like a child) I guess I really shouldn’t even think about being my normal self and cheating out again. Frustrating to say the least.

I realized I posted my mattress review in the Boxing Day thread, so I'll cross post here:

https://www.silkandsnow.com/en-ca/hybrid-mattress/

I bought this hybrid mattress for myself 2 months ago. I liked it, I like their pillows a lot too, so much that I bought myself another one of their pillows. I also ordered the same mattress for my parents.

My old mattress gave me a lot of back pain and since i've been in two MVAs in the past year, I figured I should get myself smt decent. Happy to report no back pain - im a side/back sleeper. Cannot comment on its performance in the fun department tho, covid has me hung out to dry.

I have referral code that I can PM, but I think it's on sale right now for $850 in a Queen

that is actually the one I'm thinking about getting, that and the mattress bad you get $200 off which seems really reasonable. I've been having back pain for ages because of my bed and the gf is starting to complain as well when she sleeps over so I have to upgrade. How do you like it compared to being firm/soft?

I haven't had that much experience with different beds, but its firmer than my all foam IKEA 6 inch mattress that i've had for the last 15 years LOL. That thing was so flat, I might as well have been sleeping on the floor.

It's softer than a Horseshoe (?) that super asian harder than rocks bed. My parents say its pretty firm compared to their old spring mattress, but i think they'll get used to it.

I prefer firm beds over a cloud though, and I feel that this is just right for me

I was fortunate in that a friend of mine had a mattress company drop off 3 different mattresses for him to try in a home he hasn’t fully moved into yet. I had the chance to lay on them almost as if I was in a showroom.

I wasn’t in the market for a new bed but after I took a nap on his Intellibed, it sort of ruined things for me.
