UPDATE: Police arrest ?well known? man who allegedly jumped border on motorcycle | News Talk 980 CKNW | Vancouver's News. Vancouver's Talk (http://www.cknw.com/2016/10/27/ongoing-police-presence-at-willowbrook-mall/)
Langley RCMP say they’ve arrested a “well known” 49-year-old Langley man alleged to have sped into Canada from the U.S. near the Aldergrove Crossing on a motorcycle.
Around 1 p.m., police say two men tried to jump the border on separate motorcycles; one was stopped, the other was successful.
But RCMP now say the motorcycles were heading into different directions.
“This has become somewhat of a convoluted situation and I’ve been given more clarification on that. From what I can understand now there was a south-bound motorcycle that went through the ditch into the States, and there was a north-bound motorcycle that went through the ditch not at the same location into Canada,” said Corporal Holly Largy.
It is still unknown if the suspects knew each other.
She says there is one man in custody in the U.S. and the other man in custody in Canada.
Largy says the U.S. border helicopter spotted them and relayed the information to RCMP’s Air One chopper, which then tracked one suspect to the Willowbrook Mall where he ditched the bike.
Willowbrook response
That prompted a heavy police presence, including ERT teams, but the man eluded police inside. Largy says after reviewing surveillance footage they were able to pick up the trail and he was arrested not far away.
“He was just seen getting into a vehicle and heading east on 64th ave, and he was apprehended without incident.”
“We have recovered the motorcycle, which is now confirmed stolen out of Abbotsford, and the licence plates are stolen out of Surrey.”
A caller in to CKNW says he was on the other side of the mall when he heard the approaching sirens and described the scene.
“Three ERT vehicles showed up and the guys got the machine guns out and all prepped, and in they all went. And right now there’s currently RCMP at every entrance, so it looks like it was a car chase, sorry, a motorcycle chase and he ended up dumping it right outside the mall.”
