Only really need to call in for the not as common currencies just to make sure the location(s) have them when you show up.

honestly the best exchange rate is in hk. if you can get yourself to hk first and have enough change to get to city center, its always better to do the exchange in hk.

^^ Chungking Mansions in TsT has the cheapest currency bazaar. On the HK side take the C exit at Sheung Wan station and a whole lot of FX shops on that block. Also competitive rates just as good as TsT.

Just note that each shop specializes in a certain currency. So just look for the one with the best CAD conversion.

I also had to go to Japan and I changed from CAD to HKD to JPY and it was a very good rate as well. So just get to HKD with airport transfer and bus fare.
