I enjoy listening to marching bands.........

Weird, I know, but my love for music started when I joined a marching band.

My favourite marches are British, followed by American, Imperial Japanese, and German. Over the years, I've learned to appreciate pipe bands. SFU Pipe Band - local and one of the best in the world.

John Philip Sousa is probably my favourite composer of marches. His marches - dat countermelody. Stars and Stripes Forever, The Washington Post March, The Liberty Bell March, Semper Fidelis, El Capitan March, etc. Best performances I've heard of his music is by the President's Own US Marine Band (Most can be found on You Tube).

Glenn Miller era......... Damn, some really good toe tapping music.

St Louis Blues March, American Patrol, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Moonlight Serenade, In The Mood, A String of Pearls, Tuxedo Junction, Little Brown Jug, Pennsylvania 65 oh, oh, oh, lol. Just some of his hits during the second world war.

Addendum: Battle Hymn of the Republic performed by US Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. Starts at around 4:04 The pageantry - stuff that makes America great. Too bad the recording of the music isn't great (in mono). Then 49:47 when both bands, color guard, and presentation group exit to The Marine Corps Hymn. British influence can be seen - after all, the Americans were British at one point.

MG1,

I grew up playing each and every song you listed, and more. Had no idea we had this in common.

You played baritone in the high school band.......... or some kind of lower brass instrument, amirite?

Oh, BTW, I believe British marches are on par, or better than, the American marches.

Thunderbirds, Thin Red Line, Rule Britannia, Scipio, Colonel Bogey, The British Grenadiers, Pomp and Circumstance, just to name a few..........

Then there's the pipes!

Love the counterpoint.

Mull of Kintyre. Damn, feel like a Scot when I listen to this. To my surprise, this isn't a traditional song at all. Beautiful nonetheless. Written by Paul McCartney.

Nice, I was a drum major, too. Like you, got too old.

Small world. My favourite parades were the PNE, Richmond Salmon Festival and the Hyakk. Oh, we used to take part in the hands across the border festivities. Remember playing in a few parades down in Tacoma and Seattle area.

That's awesome! I finished three years ago, so we didn't get to do anything cool like that. I've been to the music summer camp out in Penhold, Alberta for four of my summers, and too be honest, their standards weren't so high out there and we played really simplified versions of the marches. We'd participate mostly in local parades like in Red Deer, and some other town called Rockyford, where we marched behind the horses (trying to dodge the poop).

But in 2011, it was the transition year of the "old" music programme so I actually got sent to Quadra with the Sea Cadets, and they were actually pretty beast out there. We did a pretty huge parade called "Ceremony of the Flags" out in front of the Victoria Parliament. It was the first and last one I was in but it was great. Like it's a big thing. We actually started rehearsing basically at the beginning of the summer camp when everyone arrived.

MG1, have you ever seen the Ceremony of the Flags? It's got all the rifles and cannons shooting blanks. Lots of Royal Navy marches. I believe it's on B.C. Day every year in front of the parliament building in Victoria.

Btw... how are you supposed to pronounce "Scipio"? No one ever knew... we just said it like "skip-eeo"

band was my favourite aspect of cadets...local band comp was neat.

also did the 6 week camp at penhold in the early 2000s...what a shit hole of a base, decent program though.

after like 15 years I still catch myself randomly drumming on the table to steamboats lol

Nice what Squadron were you guys in?

Ex 655 Air Cadet here

I started out in 111, was there for about four years. I moved to North Van and eventually I was wasting too much time taking the SeaBus and bus over there twice per week. Also the band officer was kind of a dick, so I transferred to 103 in Grade 12... it was never the same. It was really hard to work with the band there because they're only big on survival and band basically had the lowest priority. And for some reason they were so afraid to change, even though I brought over some good ideas. Oh well. LOL. Their drill and uniforms were not exactly at the standards I was taught back at 111... Lack of Asian strictness? Haha.
I have a few friends from 655 as well (there's a few of them on here too haha)

Yeah I know there's a few on here. Can't remember his username but the dude who flys for civilian commercial airlines now.

Cadets is an awesome program, taught me lots of life skills that are still applied to this day.

Have you ever thought of serving with the Reserves?
I want to serve with the Naval Reserve but not sure I'm ready for that kind of commitment at this point in my life.

coneZONE

At this point, I haven't really thought much of it. I know a handful of friends who've gone to the RMC in Kingston, and a few others who are cadet instructors. I did think of maybe being an instructor but I don't think I have enough time to commit to participating regularly right now.

I think the best things that cadets gave me were friends, leadership, music, how to write memos and resumes, and wool socks.

I can't be the only one here who writes dates in military fomat

Wool socks and those blue and grey shirts that I still wear to bed hahahah

Cadets taught me to endure not being comfortable. I can stand for long periods of time and can fall sleep anywhere.

And following orders without questioning them, I don't talk back to any superiors at work unlike some other employees. No idea how that shit flys and they get away with it. Could you imagine if we talked back in Cadets? Haha

coneZONE

SAME. Hahah although they've phased out the blue and the grey shirts for a single navy blue one now.

I think we caught the end of the "hardcore" era, because during the time when I was finishing off, we weren't allowed to properly discipline the kids because they complained to their parents who in turn complained to the committees etc. No more standing at right dress for extended time to perfect our position, or "singling" out a problem cadet.
I'm sure if we stepped out of line, we would've been destroyed by the Cpls and Sgts hahaha.
Kids are getting out of hand these days.

Gunkan March. Performed by German Military Band??????

I think anything military in reference to WWII is a no no in Japan.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma8G8Ptn_D4 Gunkan March is probably one of the better known IJN marches.

Video starts of with photos of the largest battleship ever built back in WWII. The Imperial Japanese Navy kept the battleship out of the war until it was too late. I don't think I've ever seen a photo of the Yamato along side its sister ship, Musashi. Pics of the Bismark and the Tirpitz, damn! Anyway...................

And Minstrel Boy..........

three sets of pentatonic notes, so not all notes can be played (bagpipes are not a chromatic instrument), which gives it that extra mystical sound. Some players can bend it like Beckham to get a few sharps that weren't in the design. They stink, that's for sure. For the longest of time, I hated the sound, but over time, it grew on me to the point I now love it.

at the convocations it is generally a mix of the Grade 1 and junior band members

also unfortunately that is a bad recording as it's from behind the drum corps which totally kills the pipers sound

i came up through the SFU organization and went on to complete against them at the grade 1 level for many years

Damn, so many musicians on RS. Who would've thunk?

As for any recording, you cannot beat live performances. Just not possible to recreate sound through any means. But, recordings are the only thing that most people can experience. Unless you're like Hondaracer who takes in musicals and performances around the globe.

You still play? I bet you have a Bach Stradivarius. I was a Getzen, Doc Severinson, large bore Eterna man myself. Even owned a Benge Flugelhorn. Man, that horn was my baby. I made love to it, as one of my colleagues once said to me. I was the Asian brother of Chuck Mangione. Yeah, too much information, gulolol. In college, I was the high note specialist. Double high C’s on a good day. Then life happened. Sold my Flugelhorn and passed the Eterna down to my daughter. Haven’t played in, in, in............. 30 years? Were you ever in the New West Band or Beefeaters (maybe before your time)?

bcrdukes
05-28-2020, 07:28 AM
No, I never made it to Bach Strad level, although I do have and Olds Ambassador (nothing special) and a Holton Symphony T101, which is somewhat of a copy cat of a Strad. Holton bought the old tooling from Bach and ended up making some minor changes to it, but plays similar, and sounds smiliar to a Strad, but realistically, nothing like a Strad - Trained ears can hear the difference. I got it for very cheap from an estate sale (IIRC, $200 USD) but it needed a bit of work to get back into a good playing condition. Heidi Choo at Long & McQuade (Northwest Music OG) fixed it up for me.

I didn't play after my parents discouraged me from going in to music, despite being accepted in to UBC Music. Martin Barrinbaum was furious lol. Also, at that point, i realized it wasn't what I wanted to do, so I never pursued it, other than to play music for pleasure. I don't think i've played since maybe 2014/2015.

Edit: No, I never played with the Westies, although i did fill in for a few players once or twice. I'm not familiar with the Beef Eaters, so probably before my time. Other than that, I played with the BCRs for a solid 6 or 7 years, and played casually with Victor Guy's community band in North Van in 2013 to 2014.

Edit #2: Nice horn - i really enjoyed playing on the Doc Severinson series Getzens, but was never able to find any for sale when I was looking. I grew up playing student-level horns throughout elementary and high school (Yamaha and Jupiter, sadly) and when I did honour band with Martin Barrinbaum at UBC, he hated it, and always gave my band teacher a hard time about giving us junk horns. I think one of the things Martin didn't know was the income disparity and social situation compared to 99% of his students, but I could be wrong.

Oh, it was rough going to UBC with a less than desirable instrument. I think I had a King trumpet. My mom scrimped and saved to buy me that in high school. She saw I had musical talent and made it her goal to support me in every way possible. I remember UBC days. Going to parties and not fitting in. I kept my background a secret. I was ashamed of it. But, I survived. I learned that it doesn't matter where you come from. I did die a little each time the others talked about going to fancy places and shit - the things they experienced, etc. I had nothing to contribute. In the end, it made me stronger. My playing did the talking.

North Van community band with Victor Guy. Damn. You're so young. My band instructor at China High was Harold King. He was like the John Philip Sousa of Canada. At least that was how I saw him. He must be dead by now. He was like 100 when he was the band teacher. Did I tell you about professor Theo Goldberg? He was the music teacher at Strathcona. Man, he inspired me. He was the reason I got into music, aside from the marching band. When I went to UBC, I was blown away. He was a prof at UBC. Music Ed, iirc. I visited him a few times to talk about his days at Strath. Damn, that guy was pure gold. Actually, most of the teachers at Strath were exceptional.

Yamaha student trumpets were the best. That case, lol. I still have the used one I bought for my youngest son when he was in secondary school.

My playing was mainly gigs around town. Never joined the union, so I was limited to gigs like amateur musical productions at theatres like the Metro Theatre, Theatre under the Stars, helping out friends by playing in the pits at secondary school productions. I was also an adjudicator at some music festivals, played in big band/dance ensembles, conducted a few stage bands, etc. I miss those days. Musicals in particular. Tight little hotties running around with barely nothing on. At least at the Metro. Hot Jazz Club. Were you around when that place was hoppin'? Didn't matter if you were blind or not, lol. Couldn't see jack shit. I just looked it up. They were in operation till 2004? What the hell. I thought that placed died way before that.

Have you ever gone buskers? Granville Street, when it was still a street, lol.

At UBC, I was at a crossroads, do I pursue a career in music, or do something else? I was a perfectionist and my playing was never good enough in my eyes. Friends thought I could make it, but I couldn't make the commitment. A lot of what if's.......................

I'm tired. Need to take a seniors nap, gulolol.
