: New for BC, special park edition license plates

Remember before the Vancouver 2010 Olympics when you could pay extra to get special commemorative license plates for your car, and the money went towards the games? Today the Province and ICBC launched something even better: you can now buy BC license plates with images from our provincial parks on them, and the money you pay for them goes to the Parks Enhancement Fund. It’s all part of a thing called the BC Parks Future Strategy where the government is investing $22.9 million to build a couple thousand new campsites as well as starting something called the BC Parks Foundation with a $5 million endowment.

Pictured below are the 3 designs. The first features Porteau Cove on the Sea to Sky, the second a spirit bear and the third is of the Purcell mountains in Southeastern BC. Show your pride in British Columbia’s natural beauty with a park-themed licence plate and support our provincial parks and protected areas.

Starting January 29, 2017, three new BC Parks-themed licence plates will be available for purchase from your local Autoplan broker. All net proceeds from the sale and renewals of BC Parks plates will be re-invested back into provincial parks through the Parks Enhancement Fund.

Three unique designs
Each plate depicts a scene from one of B.C.'s parks and recreation areas.

That plate with the Purcells mountains design is sick!

That third plate design with the bear looks a bit funny. Is the bear photoshopped so that the animal looks like it is smiling? LUL

FYI these are the costs

The three B.C. Parks plates will cost $50 to buy, and an additional $40 a year to renew. The funds raised from their sale will be invested into B.C. Parks to improve programs and services above the core levels funded by government. They are set to go on sale on Jan. 29, 2017 at Autoplan brokers.

My Olympic plates cost me $125, and IIRC they didn't cost me anything to renew on a yearly basis.

Let's face it, the BC gov't knows that we are willing to pay the price to be unique like everyone else. What better way to show your friends at the country club that you're a pedestrian workaday grunt then to show up in your beemer with a regular person plate.

Hell, I'd be willing to pay the price.

When you mentioned the zig zag you got me thinking about a new BC plate for 2018, commemorating the legalization of pot.

The one-time $50 fee for the Park Plate and $18 to change the plate. You won't be able to transfer your current number/letter combination onto the Park Plate, you would have to choose a new combination beginning with "P" as seen in the samples.

I rather have smaller plates. The space on the plate is so god damn wasteful. You can chop off the bottom, space out the plate number better and still convey the same fucking message with the proper decals for dates and still have Beautiful British columbia at the top.

You can literally make an extra plate if you chopped off the bottoms of every three plates. Or just make them like the german plates

http://www.plateshack.com/y2k/Germany/germanyrheinlandweltpair.jpg

Is canada that boring that we gotta jazz up our license plates? GOSH!

we inquired a few places in Richmond, seems like each place only carries a box of 10 for each character. so you better call quick before the good #'s run out. We found a nice lucky Bear number an London Drugs.

Also can someone chime in on license plate covers? I bought a set of clear ones to protect these new plates. It's not the tinted kind, just clear plastic. There seems to be debate whether one will get a ticket or not if the plate covers is considered obstructing its view.

Rolled into the dealership to order parts and laughed at all the peasants in their new M4s and M-sports with their poor people license plates.
Could have got the 332 if I was lucky but they won't let you pick numbers. They have to give them out in sequence. I was the first to inquire about one they said. Would have been good with the running joke of NA spec e36s being 332is M sport cars. Had to go with Porteau since its my favourite destination for a quick cruise.

This new icbc system is really making a noob out of agents.

Went to a couple after work to see if i could renew and get new plates as my policy is set to expire in mid Feb. Iirc, u can renew up to 60 days early.
The agents mumbled something about the new system and how itd have to be two transactions. They said if i wanted new plates itd be better if i come in on the day my insurance expires so that it can be in one go.

I havent changed plates in a while but ive done it enough to know it shouldnt be a hassle. I could tell both agents were kinda clueless and i had to get home so didnt bother to press the issue.

Will try again tmr...hopefully with better results.

this may help you guys, called around looking for triple number plates - nearly impossible without a hookup.

basically most autoplans got the same plate numbers range for all 3 plates, but the PA, PK, and PW are what makes them unique. my sheet is super messy and locations all over the place, but here you go:

TSN Marine 710-719
InsureBC Granville 710-719
Sussex 104 Ave 380-389
Sussex Ambleside 580-589
C&N Insurance 020-029, 44

Sussex Grandview 950-969

perpetual insurance metro tnt 500-509, have 500

Westland was the most helpful, as they searched all their branches in lower mainland for me to find the triple plate I was looking for - she also searched for whatever pattern I was looking for too.

good luck!

All I want are these designs on the custom plates. Is it too much to ask?
I don't know.
If you're serious about it, call them and ask. If you're willing to pay more $, they might let you make your custom plates on one of those designs.

Just picked up the Porteau Cove "123" at Westwood Sussex. There is another 123 in the Bear design.

Frick that bear with the googly eyes is hilarious

Civic owners. I called a few places in Vancouver trying to find a 555 park plate for my brother, almost all of them said they just got EG#-## plates in

$50 to buy and $10 to renew would make it affordable to all BC's.

Why doesn't government get the Ken's Kitchen concept?? volume selling?!? Why do they try to forecast everything based $3/person x 100 people. why not $0.30 x 1000? ??

If you love hiking and camping and doing what BC does best, the $40 doesn't matter. Though I get your point.

The whole reason I love camping so much is because my family was somewhat poor growing up, it was the only vacations we could afford every year

If only we knew what % of our funds are actually used for conservation... my paranoia of it being a negligible amount is keeping me from getting one of these plates...

It says that $33 of every new license go toward park funds

Just wondering, for you guys who've exchanged your plates more recently, are you still getting the park plates based on a prorated price? Because the guy at our local Autoplan was adamant that it would be straight up $50 even if you return your current plates, but he did say that very few people were purchasing them, so who knows if he actually knows.

Only started noticing these plates a couple days ago. So far I've only see the one with the mountains and sunset. Looks really nice in person.

Is this supposed to be a limited time thing?

Outdoor enthusiast cries foul over B.C. Parks licence plates

Outdoor enthusiast cries foul over B.C. Parks licence plates - British Columbia - CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/outdoor-enthusiast-cries-foul-over-b-c-parks-licence-plates-1.4040985)

A Vancouver man is calling out the province for what he says is misleading information about how much of the $50 fee for specialty B.C. Parks licence plates actually goes to enhance parks.

Blogger and outdoor enthusiast Steven Jones says he was surprised to recently discover that only $15 of that fee is put towards the province's Park Enhancement Fund.

"There's a bigger question here of transparency and the way that they're running the park system," Jones said.

The province announced the new licence plates in January, explaining that "all net proceeds from the sale and ongoing renewals of B.C. Parks licence plates will be re-invested back into provincial parks."

It described the fund as "a transparent account where revenues enhance programs or services in provincial parks."

Jones says he emailed the province shortly after the announcement to ask exactly how much of the $50 fee would go towards supporting the parks.

"I asked in a very clear direct manner to the Ministry of Environment and received an unequivocal response that ... $33 would go towards the fund," he said.

CBC News obtained the email sent by the ministry's communications manager.

"Can you clarify on that $33? How much of that will go directly into the Park Enhancement Fund?" wrote Jones.

"The entire $33 will go into the park enhancement fund," the communications manager replied.

Similarly, at the time of the announcement, an ICBC spokesman told CBC, "For every new B.C. Parks plate sold, $33 of the initial purchase price will go to B.C. Parks and the provincial government."

Messages posted on the Discover B.C. Parks Facebook page used the exact same language.

Ministry, ICBC explain discrepancy

But when Jones crunched the most recent numbers from the province about the licence plates, he discovered only $15 of the fee is contributed to the fund — a difference of about $200,000 given how many people have bought the plates so far.

"I think that some of the 11,000 people that stepped forward and put forward this $50 with the intention of making a donation to the B.C. parks fund are going to be a little bit upset that only $15 made it into the B.C. Parks system," Jones said.

A spokesman with the ministry said the province's announcements always made it clear that it is only the net proceeds, or profits, from the licence plate sales that are contributed to the fund.

The spokesman said he couldn't speak to the email Jones received or to the $33 figure posted to the Facebook page.

The breakdown the ministry gave for the $50 fee is as follows:

$18: new licence plate fee to provincial government.
$15: directly to B.C. Parks.
$5: ICBC for cost recovery.
$7: plate manufacturing, shipping and handling.
$5: broker commission.
An ICBC spokesman similarly explained the discrepancy by breaking down the $33 as $15 towards the park fund and $18 towards the province as its standard plate fee cost.

But Jones says those responses don't explain the initial answer he was given about how much of the fee goes towards the park.

"I think that they knew what the net proceeds would be when they launched the program, and if it was only going to be $15 of every $50 that should have been announced up front," he said.

As an avid outdoorsman who often frequents the province's parks, Jones says he wants to see more done to maintain them.

"The government spends a lot of money to attract huge amounts of people to our parks from around the world and it fuels a $16-billion tourism industry," he said.

"The trails are being degraded, the signs are falling over, facilities are falling apart.

"Even if the $200,000 is not a lot in the scheme of the system, it would certainly make a meaningful impact to a trail, to signs and to facilities in the park system."

I called it. Everytime people asked me about my parks plate, I had to visibly do air quotes that "icbc says the $40 will go to the parks fun.... So icbc says"

Not this crap again. The initial cost is $50, the new plate fee takes $18 of that, leaving $32 remaining. It sounds like some people screwed up by saying it was going to be $33, but considering $33 was never possible all I can do is shake my head at the people complaining. If you're so concerned about every cent possible going to the parks maybe next time check the math beforehand. Of course if ICBC did donate the full amount and just ate all the costs this guy seems like the kind of person who would complain about ICBC subsidized these plates.

The $40 for each additional year does go to the parks though, so that's good either way.
