It's a crazy world we're living in and times are a changing!
If you don't know what Twitch.TV is by now then you're out of the loop or not in tune with the phenomena of live streaming video platforms.
Amazon recently bought Twitch so you know serious research was done by the analytics geek squad. This is not a fad, I repeat THIS IS NOT A FAD -- folks this is the future of the internet and dare I say a revolutionary concept with limitless potential. I dare anyone to criticize mega multi billionaire Jeff Bezos (the Bill Gates of the Internet)
Spoiler!
Networth: 73 BILLION
Did you ever think in your wildest dreams the day would come where you could stream yourself playing video games and get paid to play. Don't get it twisted when I say "pay to play" I'm not talking about Hillary
Ok, I'm a serious believer of Twitch. I was always told:

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life
I only wish I took this wise advice myself cause right now I have a shitty mundane and uninspiring line of work i.e retail
To be frank there are Twitchers who quit their normal 9-5 jobs or dropped out of school and started streaming who're now making 6 figure salaries annually. Females streaming themselves are getting multiple 3-4 figure donations daily. This is in the form of donations from generous patrons, subscribers and fans of said stream. It's mind blowing the money being thrown around. Its not unheard of streamers receiving $25,000 donations.
All you need is a setup consisting of a webcam, computer, personality. Screw opening up a business with all the headaches like operating costs, 12 hour days, loans, high risk of failure. Ain't nobody who's sane got any time for that. Let's face reality guys, most people with useless degrees meaning the one's with liberal arts degrees and such are worthless. You don't have to be smart or go through years of college/university to be a streamer. It's one of the lowest entry jobs with the highest earning potential. Fuck, in a few years Mcdicks is going to go the way of the dodo bird with automation.
I watch a butt load of streams and I subscribe to the channels I like and on multiple occasions I've donated money to cute female streamers now that I won't get roasted for it -- being single and all. This is addicting like you wouldn't believe.
I know the skeptics are asking why I'm not streaming... Well the downside is it's not a guaranteed paycheck and it takes a lot of time and hard work to build up a following and get high viewership #'s to get subscriptions and donations. I am trying my hand at streaming on the weekends when I have time and seeing how this plays out. With a bit of luck and the pieces of Tetris blocks falling in the right places, hopefully I can quit my job and Twitch full time!
i thought the twitch business model was: 1) be famous like rampage jackson 2) be a really elite gamer at a popular game or 3) avg or above girl showing as much cleavage as possible.

My gf has been wanting to do this but that won't happen until we move and have our own internet rather than our landlord's wifi. We have most of the equipment and lighting needed. As long as she is streaming 9-5 so she isn't cutting into family duties or dumping them on me when I get home from work, I could see it working for us.

I don't think the OP meets any of these criteria.

you do know what most people who do this spend a good 16+ hours. Also if your wife is going to be gaming she is going to hate the game that she plays. Image just sitting there playing 14+ hours each day, everyday. Is not going to be fun, is going to be like a job. Don't trust me. Go on twitch and watch someone playing video games 14+ hours a day for a week and see if you still like it. Is not, is boring, is stressful. Not to mention if you posted your video online ie youtube you need to spend hours editing your videos. There are a lot of background stuff going on we normally don't see.
So it will cut into family duties, it will cut into the time you spent with her.

We watch a lot of twitch and YouTube, cut the cable several years ago. The only behaviour that would really change for her gaming is that she'd have to be presentable for the camera, and put a shirt on. She is a gamer first and foremost. When we first met, we exchanged gamertags, not numbers.
I'll never understand the appeal of watching mediocre gamers play a game that I could be playing myself. That's like paying to watch a beer league hockey game.

I think a list celebs make serious money, but that's what 1% of the population? Same thing on any market you see making serious money. Only a few percent of all the people are making great money, while millions in the business are not making anything.
Also you realize there are companies out there operating these twitchers right? Some of those huge donations are put in by their own reps as investment to entice other people watching to donate as well. Everything you see is not what it seems.
Tons of lifestream apps here in China, some people donate MILLIONS I shit you not, to plastic surgery girls on them doing nothing but streaming video selfies of doing jack shit. As a person not born in their generation, I cannot for the life of me understand why people would donate so much for seeing some random girl going shopping or sitting at home playing on her cellphone and telling you how her hair salon messed up her hair. You'd think someone with so much money to blow away has some sort of successful business that they need to attend to and wouldn't waste time on this crap

Or spend it on hookers and blow? From time to time I do use those apps you talk about. It gets pretty boring after a few mins and I just stop watching.

I'd watch a live video of him coming home and fighting with his wife because he has to do the house duties though

I've always wondered who the people are that actually donate money to these people? More power to the streamers, if they can find suckers willing to pay them for this shit then why not?

I only watch Dota 2 streamers and its when I'm queueing for a game or done playing for the night and want to watch the "pros" play and pick up some tricks. Maybe 2-4 hours a week in total.
The whole argument of why would you watch someone play a video game is pretty laughable and I'm not even a huge watcher of these types of streams.
