Seems like it jump over the weekends to 1.41/L. Likely to stay this way for the next few weeks (or will it ever come down.).
What happen?

Refinery maintenance and whatever else they wanna call it to raise prices. Who cares we're all rich anyways what's an extra 10 bucks at the pump when we're buying million dollar shoeboxes.

lol, ain't that the truth.
ICBC is raising prices along with Hydro and Terasen gas. Cost of food is going up, cost of gas has going up, and everyone is way over a responsible debt level.
When will the shit hit the fan?

combined that with high telecom costs, i figure it's getting shittier and shittier to be a middle class canadian as time goes on

I've lived outside of Vancouver, and I actually like it better out there. Less crowded, less stress, lower cost of living (for the most part) and more recreational opportunities that aren't overrun by hordes of people on the weekend.
Girlfriend is stuck in the "must stay in Vancouver to be close to parents" mindset and it's really starting to bug me. Vancouver isn't affordable if you're not making a six-figure income, and even with a six-figure income, it's incredibly soul-sucking.

For me, it breaks down to the work commute. If I can't get to work under an hour by car or public transit, it's too fucking far. Too bad, decent jobs are hard to come by outside of Vancouver. I'd take a pay cut if both my wife and I can work close to home.
Being close to parents/in-laws is a huge plus if you plan on having kids and having them be their caretaker. Childcare costs will cost you way more than gas. :awwyeah:

Prices have been low for a few years. What have people been doing with the gas savings all these years? Should've been saved for when prices go back up... or even better, used to buy shares in energy companies. The quarterly payouts should at least subsidize your fuel costs.
But most people didn't.

Oh, I had a great job up north near Prince George. Loved the community there, liked working in the area. 5 minute walk to work. 1200sqft house for $900/month.
Girlfriend didn't want to leave Vancouver. Parents wanted me to move back down. So here I am paying $800/month for a tiny room in Pemberton working a job that's more stressful. Yeah there was a pay increase (20% roughly) but that's eaten up by the higher cost of living.
I get it that childcare costs a lot, but that's mostly true of Vancouver. In the community that I was living in before, daycare was $400/month for kids, and I had a steady 9-5 job that rarely had overtime. Lots of people did flex hours as well so that they could care for the kids.

agreed.
Having just got back from the US, I was shocked as to how expensive food is there too. My average lunch cost for a family of 5 was at least $50, and the two nights we ate "fancy dinners" were over $150. This is in USD too, so add $1.35 to those numbers. It hurts when you think about it.

We have friends who basically think that as long as they keep working, it will all be okay. Their head's are deep in the sand hoping that the 649 numbers come in and they can retire early. Life sucks, so let's go lease a G37! It's crazy.

It's so sad just how true this statement is.

Maybe it's time to find a new girlfriend with a sense of adventure?
The best times we had were when I was transferred to Montreal and my girlfriend (now wife) came with me. It sucked having to learn a new language while attempting to build a career, but it was so worth it in the end.
I'd take a pay cut if both my wife and I can work close to home.
That's what I did.
I left my 6 figure job an hour away for a 5 figure one with a 10 minute commute.
Now I have less money and more time. It's a good trade-off as long as your hobbies aren't expensive. Unfortunately mine are.....

Look who's having kids these days:
- couples who have at least one high income earning parent (most likely the father)
- parents who work in the public sector with generous maternity top up provisions and flexible work schedules
- ethnic families where the burden of childcare is shared among family members (big savings here)
Unless you're Asian, most families are not driving cars that require 91 octane.

and I get that gas has skyrocketed compared to what it was 15 years ago...but it's still one kinda in your ability to control (run multiple errands in one go, carpool, transit, get on a bike), whereas insurance to me does a bigger dent and you're stuck with an all-or-none option if you own a car.

Car insurance is a joke.
I get it, cars are dangerous, people are idiots, and when all you have seperating you and the other guy is a painted line, shit is going to happen.
But why is it that I have to pay 10% of the value of my vehicle per year?
My Tundra is worth about $25k right now. Yet I'm paying over $2600/year for insurance on it. Every year!

Weather, I just wear proper gear. I dont ride winter, but those who do have heated grips, jacket and pants. So there's no issues with the conditions. Want to avoid shitty drivers. Ride in the bike lanes, they're typically faster than main roads and have direct routes. I can get from Hastings and Willingdon to DT in 10-15mins on my scoot, in rush hour.

Gas in Aldergrove/Abbotsford has always been 9-11 cents cheaper than Langley and the LM. Everything: gas, insurance, etc. go way up once you cross west of 264th. Except for the past few months, they have been gouging and only keeping the price 4 cents cheaper.
Thank god it's summer. I can ride to work again and not have to take transit or worry too much about gas.
Vancouver has become more and more automobile unfriendly which is ironic since the number of super cars on the streets grow every day.

Not my reality either. I have always followed this logic when it comes to financial management. It's so logical to do this but people struggle with self control and things like leasing, financing, and credit cards are far too common and rather easily obtained. Hell, I know of people who took out 25k loans to modify cars (for the instant efame lol) and another with 50k in credit card debt (super )
Then you also have people who have zero class/loyalty/morals and take advantage of their own families or suck their significant others' savings dry just to achieve their selfish goals. Respect and self-respect are foreign concepts to many and the current young generation seems to be the absolute worst at it.
There will always be impatient people who are willing to put themselves deep in the red and companies who are more than willing to take advantage of their lack of patience and stupidity.

Reminds me of my co-worker who was an Estimator and Project Manager like myself. 5 years ago next week he and his girlfriend sold everything they owned and moved to the Caribbean to work on a private resort. He's a Bartender/guest entertainer takes them finishing or water skiing or whatever the fuck they want to do all day long hanging out in the sun.
His girlfriend manages the restaurant, they get accommodations provided so even though they don't make that much they don't need that much to survive. On their days off they travel the Caribbean and have seen quite a bit out down there.
They didn't have any kids, I honestly thought he'd be back in a year but 5 years later he's still there living it up.

As for gas prices,
You gotta pay to play. It's a hobby.
If you're looking at cars as transportation(or essential living tool), I'm sure you'd be driving Prius.
Why aren't we driving Prius? Because it's boring to drive and it doesn't qualify as a hobby.
People complain about gas prices, and what do they drive? V8 muscle car? European sportscar? Japanese tuner cars?
Like, stop complaining about gas prices as if was giving you a financial hardship.
You made the choice to buy cars and drive them as a hobby. If you truly needed a car for transportation because of your work/family and whatnot, there are options like Prius or econobox like Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, etc. No, I'm not talking about performance oriented 4cyl cars like Civic Si/Type-R or Focus ST/SVT
*edit* I do agree about food prices and everything else. When gas price goes up, EVERYTHING ELSE goes up.

That's how it should be. Unfortunately unless you're living at home rent free or you and your partner are pulling in 6 figures each you most likely aren't saving up 20% for a down payment.

Maybe in your world it's not a big hit to your budget.
But what about parents? What about those who commute long distances? What about people who have kids in sports?
I pay an average of $100 for a tank of gas in my truck, and I go through 6 tanks a month. Add $20 to each tank, and I'm out $120/month.That's equal to a nice dinner out with the wife. But most of all it's another $120 that they're taking from me. Add to that the increased cost of everything in the silly province and who has anything left over at the end of the month?
So forgive me when I roll my eyes at your reply. It must be nice to be able to piss away an extra $100+ a month.

I seem to remember that for certain food (poultry, eggs, milk, etc.?), Canadian safety standards are higher. Something to do with usage of hormones, arsenic, source and/or processing of the meat. In particular, USDA has allowed China-processed chicken to be sold to US for consumption. Let's just say I am not particularly fond of China's food processing, eh?

While I may have a slightly different take than you do on some of the issues you mentioned, I get where you are coming from, and I mostly agree with you on how the wealth gap is widening and forcing us to alter our lifestyle for the worse. In particular, I totally agree on the point where the N.American dream and lifestyle are getting replaced with the Asia-like packed sardines living, and people are just rolling over without a fight to accept it. To me, that does not make sense at all. Had I wanted to stay living in a tiny suite in a highrise instead of living in a single detached house, had I wanted to ride a bus or take a train instead of driving to work, I would have move to some major city in Asia.
Maybe I am talking through a pair of rose tinted glasses, but I honestly think life in the 70's up to around the turn of the millennium was a far better time to life in Vancouver, regardless of the economic ups and downs. There was an awesome race track right there in Coquitlam. Single income families can still afford a mortgage on a single detached home with a 2 car garage, a car payment, and still have $$$ leftover to raise a family. The sky was bigger, closer, and wider with far fewer highrises (just look at Burnaby Metrotown and Brentwood area now?). You can still choose to live in close quarters if you want, but the key difference is choice. Now we barely even have that choice to live in tiny tight spaces while keeping ourselves fed.
Gosh... I'm turning into a grumpy old man like MG1... :lawl:

I didn't choose to open the immigrant floodgates. I didn't choose to export our oil and grain to the US and Asia. Someone else did, and they're reaping the benefits. Is it fair that the billionaires are getting richer, while many of us are getting poorer and being forced to change our lifestyles? Not at all.
Yet so many folks such as yourself are willing to accept that. And that my friend, is sad. The erosion of North America is our generations greatest loss.
yeah but the reality is, American dream is over. We're not in 1960s or 1970s.
As Kevin O'Leary said, China is taking over. Not just China, but if you look at Japan, Korea, Vietnam, etc...Asians work hard, they don't just do 9-5 shifts. It's typical to see them sleeping over at work.
If you drive around in Tokyo for example, you will immediately notice that how many nice cars like Ferrari and Mercedes driving around, all the buildings are much cleaner and nicer, public transits are far more sophisticated, etc.
Yet in Canada we expect someone to hire us as long as we graduate college/university.
Getting a 4,000 sq-ft house + 2 car garage, maybe with a pool...those days are long gone.
Everybody says this "University degree is new high school diploma"

Who's asking for a 4000sq ft house with a pool? I'd be perfectly happy with what my dad was able to afford with one salary back in the 80s/90s. Being middle class used to offer such luxuries as a car to drive to work and a modest place to live. Now people say you're entitled and should think about a scooter and rent for life.
I'm glad I was born in the 80s and not now, at least I still have a chance at owning property. I can tell my grandkids how once upon a time even the common folk had a pot to piss in.
Also, by the time I'm 80 global warming will be in full swing and I'll be sitting on my porch in 45C weather wearing a sweater being comfortable as fuck.

After selling the Chevron in downtown Van for $72 million, you would think they could give us a bit of a break on gas prices...

Can someone answer that scooter question. You can ride them in bike lanes?

By "bike lanes", if you mean the ones used by human-powered bicycles that our stupid mayor is infatuated with, then I'd say I don't think you can ride a 50cc scooter in there.
In HOV lanes where motorcycles are allowed, I still don't think 50cc scooters would be allowed there unless traffic is <70 km/h. By law, LSMC cannot exceed 70 km/h on level ground. So if you are going faster than that, you are breaking the law.

So prices go up by 10cents because of US refinery issues; but drops 7cents when things are back to normal.
Totally makes sense....

i thought gas was going up because of the air strikes on Saudi-backed Syria (even if our crude isn't coming from ME)

They're currently running the same promotion at the Ladysmith Shell station (-$0.03/L) on my commute.
I Googled it and it seems like they do these promotions (-$0.03/L to -$0.05/L) at random Shell stations on occassion throughout the country.

Well prices have normalised by 3 - 4 cents this week already.
For city driving a BEV is good enough.. it is actually kinda fun in the rain and those low resistance tires.

Ikeas and most municipal facilities (community centres, libraries etc).. Most malls I see are starting to charge $1 / hour, $4 max.. which is not bad. Tesla does offer $1000 of free charge every year. Say $5 for 200km (maybe I am just lead footed).. that's 40k km worth of mileage a year.. all in first gear!
