I've cleaned many things with gas, it cuts heavy grease and grime and is relatively cheap when compared to product cleaners from CT that do the same. Granted I usually drop things like tools or parts into a bucket and let it sit.

She might have got some road asphalt on her car or something from all of the construction work going on around Vancouver. It is actually a pretty clever way to clean it off. As long as it doesn't drop down onto the hot exhaust pipe, haha.

Seriously though, don't people have better things to do than shame somebody for cleaning their car with a touch of gas? I mean it looks like she just used a very tiny amount and then had a paper towel handy to wipe it off immediately. It wasn't like she was hosing the car down or anything.

No one is questioning that gas can be used as a cleaning agent. But if you don't see what's wrong with what this lady is doing then you're an idiot.

At one point the woman seemed to accidentally squeeze the handle too hard and shot gasoline into the back of her car.

Good point. The last time I tried to pump my own gas in Richmond I was pushed away by an elderly gas attendant. He took his job very seriously.

It's a good thing that the Chinese lady didn't wear a welder's mask visor and bring cigarettes while she was using gas to clean her bumper.

The gas station would have been LIT if she did that. :lawl:

After a Chevron station forgot to put my gas cap back on, with me only finding out a few days afterwards, I never let any gas attendant in Richmond touch my car. It's not a big deal, just say you can do it yourself, or say you're paying with card and they never cause any trouble.

I believe Richmond has a city bylaw that all stations must be full serve, but it's not like Oregon where it's actually illegal at level for the customer to pump their own gas.

When I lived in Richmond I'd never let them pump the gas for my Mustang. The older filler neck doesn't trip the shutoff, and they would always puke gas all over the back bumper.

Yeah... No. It doesn't matter what ethnicity you are for people to notice you are full retard if you are using a gas pump to wash your car.

It is pretty stupid for sure, I am not defending it at all. Maybe it is just because I've seen a lot of far dumber shit go down at gas stations on the Island where people just shrug, but I am just surprised this story is getting this kind of traction.

Consider that those stations also have signage all over them about not using your phone, and yet everybody is ignoring the fact that the SJW who took the photo was blatantly disregarding them.

Really, in the larger scope of things, either one of the above a fairly minor in nature. Spilling gas at stations in nothing new, and frankly cell phones are not an ignition source unless the battery is exploding.

On the other hand the people who are putting others at serious risk are the ones that are getting in and out of their car while filling. They are potentially creating static sparks which could be an ignition source for fumes. I see this happening almost every time I fill up.

i've never seen that happen before, normally when i pump gas in richmond and get out to do it myself, the attendants thank me. especially when it's busy and they're running around like crazy, they appreciate it.

i saw a weird thing happen a few weeks ago that this reminds me of. a white woman (if that matters) was filling her tank and as she finished a tiny bit dripped out onto her car, which is pretty normal. instead of just ignoring it and letting it evaporate, she gets the squeegee and cleans the area off. i guess gas could damage paint a little but i've never seen any reason to do that..

Um, I'm asian, if that matters, and I used to do that (when I was like 16 and was driving my dad's beater).

Having said that, I don't think I've ever had gas drip onto the car in a long, long time, as I'm pretty careful not to let it happen. Besides, there's a thing nowadays called bottled water. Something that wasn't around when I was 16, lol. That's when we had lead and who knows what in our gasoline, Gulololol. And, fuel filters you could get at easily.

Also, alcohol may evaporate, but I'm pretty sure gasoline leaves a tiny bit of residue behind, because it has other components, like additives in it. Anyway.............

Gas eats paint... So yes, you should wipe it off (via squeegee, bottled water, paper towel, microfibre, etc.) if any comes into contact with paint.

Dude are you for real

Well, I guess trying to find any common ground in this thread is pointless, If you are going to trying and poke holes in my posts, then let me at least spell it out for you.

1) Using the gas hose directly on parts of your car is pretty dumb, that is what I agree with, and that is what I am not defending.

2) Using gasoline as a solvent to clean a things like bitumen off your car is a valid method. As for the claim it isn't a good technique because it will strip off paint, I've had fuel spill out on my paint near the gas filler on all of my car countless times and not bothered to clean it off, and the paint has never once been affected.

3) The pulling of "the race card"... uh ok, let's take this down a few notches. It isn't exactly a secret that RS, and the rest of Vancouver for that matter enjoy poking fun at old Asian ladies doing silly things. Maybe it has just become so ingrained in the culture here that it goes unnoticed, but as somebody who is moving with fresh eyes it is pretty obvious. All I was trying to say is that if this had been a logger in Prince George cleaning off his licence plate with diesel (which is actually a thing btw), despite being basically the exact same type of thing, it probably wouldn't have been some crazy viral video and on the 6:00 news.

4)I stand by my stance that this isn't worth the attention it is getting. Yeah the person is being pretty dumb, but there is a fever pitch of SJW's vibrating in their arm chairs jerking off to this story, and it is hardly warranted.

Further to my point, last year when I was fueling up in Chilliwack I saw some yokel filling up a 2L pop bottle with gas (probably for his lawn mower or something)... nobody went full SJW on his ass, people raised an eyebrow and thought "what an idiot", and then went on with their life.

5) Now finally, if I had saw this person doing this, if I was literally standing next to her waiting for my car to fill, I'd probably say something like "WTF are you doing", but otherwise it is hardly noteworthy. What I wouldn't do is pull out my phone (mostly because that is just as stupid given that gas stations post very clearly "Do not use your phone when refueling") and snap a picture.

yup, if you look at pretty much all his posts on rs, you can come to the conclusion that he is, indeed, for real.

Well, somebody has to play devils advocate, otherwise it would get kind of boring on here. Besides, how else am I going to pass the afternoons?

stupid thing she is doing for sure..
but I bet the majority of people ridiculing this don't even realize you can use gasoline as a solvent to clean sticky stain and grease. (e.g. i got a jerry can for lawnmower at home and i used them to clean tape residual on shitty labels..)

Most people are laughing because they thought the lady can't distinguish between a water hose and gasoline hose.

I have never had or seen gas take paint of my cars, trucks or even bikes ever.
I have had gas eat and soften some plastics.
And I have had brake cleaner eat some paint off before.

Just sayin

People should use 99% isopropyl rubbing alcohol instead of gas. It's surprising how much rubbing alcohol can remove, and it's safer, dries quickly, doesn't need to be rinsed off, and it also doesn't smell as bad (subjective) and the vapors are short term.

I have a whole arrange of cleaning products for my car and to be honest, none of them seem to work better than straight up rubbing alcohol. So far, I've never seen any negative issues on my car paint.

While PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate, the stuff most clear drink bottles are made of) is not 100% gasoline resistant, it would take months of holding gas before the bottle would fail.

at work i have a 500ml water bottle full of gas. i use it to clean the small white board next to my desk (in a shop, not an office). i prick punctured the lid so hardly any comes out when i squeeze it. it's been there for like 3 years, i can't notice any degradation in the bottle. it is plastic #1, or Polyethylene Terephthalate as Great68 said.
