Solar eclipse 2017
I'm not exactly an astro-nerd, but we would soon get the rare chance to have a total solar eclipse on Aug 21st 2017.
I've seen solar eclipse before but never a totality (FYI, it's when the moon covers the entire sun), and this time around, we'd be in a close proximity of the totality path.
For the next chance to witness eclipse this close to us, it would be 2045 (there'd be another that passes NA in 2024, but you'd have to be on the east coast/midsouthern US)
Anyone heading down for this?
Here's the map of path:

Planning to take a day or two off to bring my kids down there.

Most likely will not go down to the states but I might just go to some kind of decent vantage point where I might get an image as a memento.

Was just down in Lincoln city and loved it. You can have a fire on the beach so keep that in mind when you bring the kids!

That's where I plan to go actually. But I am still checking on a good observation spot. Going to pass by it earlier in the summer, so I'd see if there's some good spots.
But if anyone has any good recommendation, I am all ears. :D

what can we expect for the scope of this eclipse?
when we had that blood moon 2 years ago it barely covered the center of the frame at 320mm
I only have primes now
300mm is only the bare minimum, probably doable if you have high MP body for cropping. I'm planning on renting a 500mm F4 and add a 2.0 TC on a Nikon D500, which would give me an equivalent of 1500mm F8.
Here is a rough idea what different FOV gives you:

which shop might also rent e-mount adapters and heavy duty tripods?
I'm guessing TC on an lens mount converter will yield craptastic results

I have a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VRII and 600mm f/4 VR also 2x and 1.4x teleconverters that I could possibly rent to someone...
Maybe I should just sell those finally :considered:
Could definitely use the cash

Good luck getting a hotel room or a camping site in that band...they've been sold out over well over a year!
