Proper Table Manners and Behaviour Thread
I'm at the Buffet at Grand Villa Casino. Twice in one week, lol. Free is always good, Gulolol. Anyway, I'm just appalled at the lack of manners by people.
There's nothing worse than displaying poor manners in public than at a restaurant/eating establishment.
Dude next to me keeps wiping his runny nose with his hands. Elbows on table. Face close to plate while shoving salad into his mouth.
A couple of days ago, one guy was chewing his food like a cow. Mouth open and making weird sounds. So gross. Did these people not have parents who smacked them up the side of the head for being pigs at the dinner table?
Bring food to mouth, not the other way around.
Anyway, this thread is companion thread to Engrish 101. Should have titled this thread, Manners 101.
If you have stories of poor behaviour post them in this thread.

Lol my brother-in-law who works at Costco was just saying this weekend how he's had to bitch at so many people over the summer who were sampling cherries and spitting the pits back in the package or on the pallet.

I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but I was taught that manners are important no matter where you are. I guess this thread can go two ways. Gross stories or one in which the uninformed can learn a thing or two. I'm no angel, and I can use some tips. And, yes, an old dog can be taught new tricks.

As a kid, i've had chopsticks and those long wooden spoons thrown at me from across the table for having shitty table manners

The table manners that annoy me most are when there's a group of 4-5 people eating at a casual restaurant, let's say cactus club as an example, and they're sitting in the dinning area. Most groups will like to keep to themselves but every now and then I get placed at a table beside a group of assholes who's voices rise with every word they say. By the time their sentence is over it's as if they're screaming what they're saying but the kicker to it is all of them are doing it at once and it's as if they're all trying to over power each others voices. Generally it's younger Asian men in their 20's but occasionally it'll be a table of white guys speaking Croatian/Serbian/Greek/Russian etc.
If I'm with someone else and they're rude to our server I'll be embarrassed to be sitting beside them. Please and thank you should be used when talking to them. I've cut dates short over a girls snobby attitude towards a server as if she's just a peon with a slave job.

You ain't see nothing till you eat at a Chinese restaurant or in China. People in China literally spit their bones on the table. Yup on the table. This happens even in high end restaurants.
I sat next to the person so eats really loud so I ate even louder while facing towards him. He learn pretty quick not to do that.

If anything, I'd consider watching other people eat pretty rude. Disgusting things like wiping runny nose with hands are obviously rude but elbows on table and face to food is their preference. (different story if sitting and eating beside someone) Eating noises are also a grey area. There's no way im not going to slurp my noodles because its considered rude in some cultures. (the asian way, not the white people way where the suck up the noodles and push away the broth/sauce with their lips.)

honest questions... aint people taught table manners in China? I don't understand how people can be so rude while at a restaurant. Don't get me wrong I've seen some fat ass slob white people before as well.
people need to learn an acceptable voice level for their conversations.

Those are the table manners there. Just because it's not the same as it is here, doesn't mean it's wrong

As a CBC, I was taught proper etiquette at the dinner table. No slurping of food or spitting bones out on the table.
As for your question about table manners in China, I saw none whatsoever when I visited the smaller Chinese cities or even the big cities like Shanghai.
Peasants! :fuckthatshit:
I also think that culture does come into play when it comes to table manners. A buddy and I were at a ramen shop in Tokyo a few years ago. We ate our ramen noodles without slurping up our food. All the locals were slurping their ramen like vacuum cleaners.
Then the noodle shop owner smiled at the customers slurping up their noodles while giving me and my buddy a cold stare. We did not know why we got the cold shoulder at that noodle shop.
Then we found out later that in Japanese culture it is considered good table manners, and proper etiquette to slurp noodles and the soup to tell the cook that the food is good. If a person eats the noodles quietly, then the person is showing their displeasure towards the meal.
Proper etiquette and table manners in Canada can be viewed differently in another country like Japan.

The question is how do you get free food at the buffet? lol.
Sign up for the casino's reward card and they'll send you coupons in the mail. My parents periodically go so they get free buffet and free food vouchers in the mail all the time. Its gotten so bad that we actively avoid eating their casino food cause we've had it so much lol
Silver Reef Casino down by Bellingham does the same thing except they take it even further. Their mailer vouchers give you free hotel stays at their casino, so it's a great place to spend the night after a day of shopping in the States
Richmond Costco is living hell on earth. You can't pay me enough to go there.

If I remember correctly its bad etiquette in Chinese households to not keep both your hands/arms on the table?
The other thing that bothers me the most, people shaking their legs when they sit down for dinner.
i learned some bad table manners from my chinese friends, like putting a bowl up to your mouth and using chopsticks to scoop rice in! lol
my family is from korea so they don't pick up their bowls, they tend to leave them on the table and eat from there.

I may not be as well experienced in life as you sir, but I have seen some of the least mannered people at casinos or in situations related to gambling.
1) 5 of us were eating at a nice restaurant in Las Vegas, mom's friend left the table no less than 5 times during dinner to gamble (ate a piece of sushi whole and walked away)
2) drunk guy losing money and cursing at dealer when he lost his all-in
3) On the Macau Ferry I have seen people line up 10 at the door 10 minutes before arrival, and then keep budging at the immigration lines

I have seen and literally heard terrible table manners and etiquette at work.
This old FOB who sits near me burps every day after he eats his Chinese take out food for lunch. Every, Fucking, Day. It's like clockwork!
-slurps that fried rice like there is no tomorrow!
I'm trying to find an empty desk to move so that I do not have to sit next to this pig eating from his trough.
Karma is a bitch though. That FOB spilled an entire bowl of wonton soup and noodles on to his desk one day. It was so hard not to laugh that I had to send instant messages to some co workers to share some humour. We had a good laugh later that day. :lawl:

The shaking leg thing is something I'm HORRIBLE at. I do it all day while at work and I notice I do it sometimes while I'm out for dinner but I usually stop once I see my beer or water having ripples in it from the vibrations. Even as I'm sitting here at work right now my right leg is rested on top of my left knee and is bouncing up and down haha. I'm always moving around, if it's not my leg or foot shaking/tapping then it's one of my hands playing to the beat of a song inside my head using my thumb and last 3 fingers.

I'm just going to bitch about my coworkers habits in this thread
1) 50+ year old lady chews gum with her mouth open like a cow chewing on grass all day. Jams piece after piece into her mouth for her entire shift. She used to sit across from me for months and somehow I endured it until she moved to another part of the office. Funny that her contractor colleague yelled at her one day because of the chewing noise. Didn't make a difference. So disgusting.
2) Another lady who used to sit next behind me spent hours eating food loud crunchy food like carrots, celery, chips, salad at her desk daily. Mouth open of course because who closes their mouth when they eat? Then you wouldn't have those bits of food littering your desk to eat later.
Pretty sure someone hates me enough that they keep putting these people next to me.
I used to work at a fish processing plant for decades........... the guy's lunch room was a fucking pigsty. Washroom was next to the lunchroom and even though the custodian came by often, the place was just gross. It was like the workers tried to outdo each other in the gross department. We had bikers, truckers, crackheads, you name it, using that lunchroom. The fridge was something you dare not leave your food in. It either got stolen or puked on, lol. Needless to say, I kept my lunch elsewhere.
I often wAndered why guys had to be that way. It was like you were a fairy if you had manners. The more gross you were, the tougher you looked in front of the others. I kept my mouth shut and continued to hold onto my manners. Didn't feel one bit less of a dude than the rest of them. Helps when I was just as tough as them. Also helps when you're crew chief/supervisor.

I think the elbows on the table is kind of a dated thing at this point. I'll observe it reasonably at higher end establishments where they are coming and actually cleaning crumbs etc off the table but I couldn't care less about it happening at a Buffett.
Kinda asking a lot for manners to be observed at a buffet..that's like complaining about the quality of sushi at an AYCE
The question is how do you get free food at the buffet? lol.
Simple. Get an Encore card and swipe as often as you can. At Grand Villa, you get free play, two for one dinners, free dinners, etc.
I am a triple diamonds card holder. At Hard Rock Casino, I get free breakfast or lunch every weekday. I usually order to go, and eat it at home or give it to one of my kids.
At Grand Villa, I get 20 dollar free slot play once a week, plus $15.00 food voucher once a week, and a U-Spin worth 5 to 500 dollars worth of points each week. When I was a double diamonds card holder, it was 10 bucks free slot play and 10 bucks food voucher.
Sometimes the casinos have a spend minimum 15 bucks at a restaurant and get 15 bucks free play. I won 500 bucks in free play on a free U-Spin once. Yeah, you have to go often and spend a fair amount to get to triple diamonds level. You get assessed once a month to see if you can be moved up a level. Once you get to whatever level, it lasts for 6 months. You can get bumped down at the end of your 6 months.
Last Friday of each month, Hard Rock has this event called Privileged Fridays. Free dinner voucher and free drink ticket, plus chances to win prizes.
As for US casinos, they have promotions as well. Silver Thief, I mean, Reef, Casino has 10 dollar US free slot play for people 50 and over. Free buffet on your birthday (that's for all members). Northwood Casino, which is temporarily closed due to band members' disagreement, offers 10 over exchange rate (up to 100 bucks) on Saturdays. Damn bastards closed down recently..... just when our dollar is at 80. Would have made it 90 cents.
I can go on and on.............. just not worth it if you lose track of your spending. I use my winnings to keep my points count up. It's up and down. It's more about the time you waste there. I have nowhere to go, so it's like my entertainment.

The guy next to me had his elbow on the table with fork pointed down on his food. He was playing with his food while he made these sounds and picked his teeth with his pinky fingernail. I don't care, either, but it just shows how much class or lack of class this guy has. I've seen plenty of gross behaviour in my days growing up in the DTES. Just pointing out that it makes the person look like an uncouth bafoon. That's all. It doesn't matter where you are, you need to behave in a civilized manner while in public. This guy probably eats like this at his daughter's wedding and it's probably par for the course.
Also, this guy touches the serving spoons and utensils that the rest of the patrons use.......... I can see him sneezing without covering up at the buffet or coming back from the washroom without washing his hands.
This is why I try to get to the buffet early and be the first one there.

I used to do that a lot, as well. My mom gave me heck for it. It's called, "poor man's shake." Superstition? Maybe meant you were going to become a beggar? Who knows........... I've stopped doing it after a while. I see my eldest son do it a lot. I just let it slide. Once in a while it's so bad, it shakes the car when I give him a ride.
Speaking of involuntary movement, there's this old asian dude who's at the seniors home where I volunteer. He continually thrusts his hip forward like he's humping a dog. I mean he can't help it, I guess. He sits in his wheelchair like that and at the dinner table. The rest of him looks like he's not there. Maybe he's in lala land boinking Miss Hong Kong 1917.

I swear.......... wearing a baseball cap lowers the IQ of most people. Right up there with handing over a hose to a worker. Worker with hose and wearing baseball cap = zero work done, lol.
It's like at school. Most schools don't allow students to wear hats and hoodies in class. Can you imagine a high school where everyone shows up to a class wearing hoodies?
Clothes make a difference? I can't imagine showing up to a business meeting in Burmuda shorts, Hawaiian shirt, and a Gilligan's hat. Unless, of course, you're the CEO/Big Boss. Bosses need to be in white and wear a stetson, gulolol.

had this talk today about table manners. i was at wings tonight and i burped once. my female friend asked if i had table manners.
i think if youre somewhere you eat with your hands primarily, wings/captains boil/seafood places, table manners can take second place.
i think the whole elbow on the table thing is due to the distance between table and chair.
places that have tables way to close to the seat, i tend to put my elbows on the tables.
places that have a nice gap, or too wide of a gap, i never catch myself putting elbows on the table.
with most new restaurants having super high tables, i find myself putting more of my forearm on the table.
the whole hat / sweats / wardrobe thing is all dependent on where you go. but i guess with today's fashion trends anything could be ok in a restaurant.
weirdest thing i've seen was pajamas and hat on.

Thoughts on fork in right hand and knife in left hand? For the life of me I can't manuver a fork with my left hand :okay:
I thought it was the other way around, LOL. I think the knife is in your right hand if you are cutting with fork in left hand, then switch after you are finished cutting. Well, I'm left handed, so it causes issues. To solve this, I just keep the knife in the right hand and fork in my left hand and never switch, so it looks proper.
This is apparently the North American method. Apparently there is a European way???
BTW, I learned most of this stuff in school. Before we graduated, the counsellors and PE department, of all things, gave us lessons on how to behave and eat properly at formal occasions. My parents, being Asian, knew very little about western etiquette. When I think back to my schooling, the school did a fantastic job with getting students ready for the "Real" world. Industrial education, business ed, typing, etc. I don't think they do that anymore, which is sad. And, they weren't electives, either.
Addendum:
I wish they didn't segregate boys from the girls back then. As in, boys took industrial education, while the girls took sewing and cooking. Damn, when I flew the coup and was single, I didn't know a soul who could sew.......... couldn't cook well, either. Then I got married. Problem solved.
Now with my current situation, I have been forced to learn to do those things. Anything a woman can do, men can do....... and better. Best chefs in the world? Best tailors in the world, best............ nuff said. Before the ladies on RS give me the what for. The only thing men can't do, is be a good mom.

Not a table manner etiquette but I hate co-workers who leave their dishes in the sink for others to clean or "soak". How about just wash them once you're done so there's nothing to soak..
At our company we have our own kitchen Chef and a full salad bar & daily soups, sometimes there aren't enough dishes for everyone because people hide their dirty dishes in their desk drawers.. Just gross. We even have a commercial dishwasher.. You barely have to rinse just pop it in the tray and pop it in the dishwasher.. Easy Peasy... to some. You'd think people would respect the kitchen since the company offers a free lunch program 5 days a week.

Proper etiquette for chopsticks is to never, ever lick your chopsticks or use the chopsticks to pick the food on a dish to look for the best piece of meat or vegetable.
That is very rude!

i just hold it in a position i can grab food with tightly so it doesn't drop. then again i don't hold chopsticks properly either
I don't hold them properly, plus I use my left hand. That's two strikes against me. Thank god my mother didn't harp on it. The fact that I beat out everybody at the annual church picnic bean picking contest may have helped. I beat out a long time champion, who happened to be my mom's friend/rival.
They all laughed at me at the beginning until I took first place. Eat that, you old hags.
Speaking of forks and shit. I learned the proper way to eat spaghetti from my wife years ago. It's when you spin the noodles with fork on a spoon. Also, never cut the noodles. Apparently, that's not cool.

^That's actually the proper "North American" way. I hear it was due to our abundance of sauce ingredients that necessitated use of a scooping device. As opposed to the poor peasants in the old country that couldn't rub two tomatoes together to make a bolognese. Somehow that's translated to us spinning fork on spoon.
In Italy, presumably the aforementioned old country, no spoon is used and you just spin your fork on the plate. Also they eat pizza with a fork and knife. Go figure.

As long as you're not holding the chopsticks at the middle (that's what children do) then you'll be fine. If you hold them at the very end then you're basically show your l33t chopstick skills

if you're holding them "properly", you actually get a bit more leverage by having your fingers higher up, making it easier to grab stuff. i'm sure there's some sort of chopsticks physics behind this.

Chop sticks are stupid. Fuck.
It's actually surprising how little people nowadays know about table etiquette, and this goes for both Western and Eastern society.
I learned both versions because 1. my family is strict in this shit (eastern) and 2. I had a fucking class on this (western).
I guess people nowadays simply don't know or don't bother with them. But that's what fucking bothers me. Table etiquette is something of a second nature. Once you learn it, you never stop. It's not that hard to begin with. Certain details might be tedious and no longer practiced as much (such as standing up when people arrives/leaves, and button/unbutton your jacket if you are in one).
If one doesn't want to look cocky doing all these shits, they can at least do the common sense ones: no double-dipping, place your napkins and god forbid, no talking with food in mouth.

Moms side of the family is Italian and we had the typical massive dinners at least once a month with 20+ family members. Spoons were given to us as kids until we were able to do it on our own without making a mess. Once we could do that it was frowned upon using a spoon as its only for kids.

That post just made this thread more interesting. Thanks.
I wouldn't have even clicked on the video if that name wasn't mentioned.

I can stand almost everyone but one thing I absolutely cannot stand is someone smacking their lips and chewing loudly with there mouth open. Cannot properly eat when I sit at a table with someone eating like that.

I watched that video without sound to find out who this Maria person is. Not bad.
Following that, there was a guy cooking Korean bbq. I noticed he used his chopsticks to pick up raw meat and later used the same chopsticks to eat the meat. Is there not a food safety risk in doing that?

It is my food. Sushi snobs.
Went to a high end sushi restaurant in Maui a while back, and the wife and I sat at the bar. I got in trouble from the sushi chef that I was eating my sushi too fast.
FailFish
He was kind enough to explain the finer points of his sushi though. How you need the tuna to hit your tongue before the blah, blah, blah.
It was really good sushi though.
Yeah, chefs like that used to bother me, but it shows they are passionate about their craft. And 99 out of a 100 times, they're creations are really good.
What? No mixing of wasabi and soy sauce?
I guess that's if one's in a very delicate japanese restaurant.
I've grown used to Taiwanese approach to sashimi/nigiri... absolute fresh fish, white radish with (preferred) freshly ground horseradish mixed lightly with soysauce (a 3:1 mix is my preference).
The horseradish gives you the kick, white radish the texture and finishing with the sweetness from the sashimi. :sweetjesus:
If you have never had sashimi this way... you should. It's beyond awesome!

Try put your entire foot on the ground and not just the toes part, it will stop. It's a natural physical reflex that everybody has it.

You can eat however you want if the environment you are in allows it. But it doesn't hurt learning how to do it properly for different ones. It shows your respect to others as well as the establishment.
And really, it's not hard... just need practice. There are literally very few things you can't get done with fork/knife; even for tedious stuff like de-shelling a shrimp

The vid shows with spoon, but doing with knife is about the same. Once you get your hands (no pun intended) on the skill, it's actually easier than do it with hand.

Can't stand loud eaters, ocationally I'll catch my kid doing it and he gets a light back hand in the back of the head same way my dad did to me to teach me to eat properly. Nobody should be able to hear you chew or see your food well you're doing it, if they can you are doing it wrong.

Eating food at a restaurant (with food dishes for everyone to eat, like a Chinese restaurant) or someone's house without using serving spoons, forks, chopsticks.
Nobody wants to eat your saliva.
Ever eat at a hot pot restaurant where people wash their chopsticks in the soup digging for food?

It depends on where I'm eating or what I'm eating. I'm generally a quiet eater but when it comes to drinking soup/broth i might be louder. I remember when i was little, my parents would say that the soup must be good because we were drinking it so loudly(?). It definitely helps to slurp it when it's hot. But then I wouldn't say i "slurp"? I kind of lowkey slurp, like inhaling but without making a loud watery slurping noise lol. It's different when you have soup in a Western restaurant because the spoon is small and you don't drink from the bowl, lol you're basically just eating the soup.
Funny story about putting the bones on the table in China: it's true (where my family originates from anyway). Last time I visited my relatives, it's a normal thing to just put the bones on the table and at the end of the meal, to wipe them off the table when you clean up. I guess it's stayed the same there, while our family evolved after coming to Canada. My family usually each have a bone plate when we eat food with bones, or leave the bone in our bowl. My grandparents over here like to set out old flyers/newspaper for bones and wrap it all up to dump after dinner.
Also the other time we visited my relatives in China, we went over to another's place where they offered us seeds/peanuts/etc to eat. My dad was holding onto the shells that he'd peeled off and asked them where the garbage can was. Their response was "Oh, just throw it on the floor, we'll sweep it up later." Like huh?!? Lol
I'd have to say, I probably don't know much about other food/eating culture. I try to use the provided utensils as generally proper as possible

I was in a KFC in China, and by holy, not only were they spitting the bones on the table. There were people spitting the bones on the floor... ON THE FLOOR!!! ... one actually bounced and hit me in the ankle I gave the lady a death stare but she didn't even look up to notice... :heckno:
When I was really young my family always kept saying if I kept shaking my leg at dinner that I would grow up to be poor because shaking the leg was metaphorically "shaking leaves off the tree" in that the leaves were dolla dolla bills lol. I dunno, it somehow worked.
