From the looks of the pictures you can set it up iin either the original look or the new look? I'm glad they did that after they discontinued the original Falcon kit and then came out with a new one based off of 7.

yah, ppl buy these for investments. The original collectors millennium falcon was released in 2007 and now its going for about 3k-5k. Was worth even more before this new one was announced.

Lego sets usually have a life span of around 3 years before they are not available anymore so there is a huge market for scalpers especially collectors sets.

I know you can get the instructions and parts list online, and that you can order individual parts. I'd love to know just how much it would cost to "DIY" the 10179 (or as close as you can get anyways). New it was $500 so I'm guessing it's going to be at least that much in parts (+ inflation).

Amazing set... I plan to buy one eventually, even though I have its predecessor.

But at $1000+ CDN after taxes, a massive box, and tons of people looking to get rich from stockpiling rare LEGO sets, I'm not sure if this will be a wise investment if that's your goal...

There are a few pieces that were unique to this set (thus costing a LOT), but even if you find substitutes, I'd say it's not worth your time to put in multiple orders and shipping costs to put together a DIY version. Cheaper to just buy this new one!

Given the price tag I'm guessing the majority of people who buy one are going to be keeping it sealed as an "investment", so I'm guessing it wouldn't be an investment you could cash out on quickly in the future. What I'd love to see is for LEGO to bring all their old sets back into production, just to lower the "collector" prices a bit. The values are so high it's hard to justify actually building it, but if it stays sealed then all you're really collecting are cardboard boxes with pictures on them.

There are a few pieces that were unique to this set (thus costing a LOT), but even if you find substitutes, I'd say it's not worth your time to put in multiple orders and shipping costs to put together a DIY version. Cheaper to just buy this new one!

After I posted that I did manage to find a site that took the parts list and made it possible to order as many of the parts as possible from different sources, and all the ones that could supply nearly all the pieces cost more than to just buy a set.

I wish there was a way to "rent" LEGO sets, either at home or at a business or something. They'd have to verify all the pieces are returned which may kill profitability (even with a deposit and lost piece fee) but I'd be willing to pay a decent bit to build one of these huge kits just once.

An alternative is buying the fake lego sets made in china. Everything is pretty much the same except not having the lego logo on the bricks. So you can still enjoy the process of building the set and it's 90% cheaper than the market price of discontinued sets.

The moment this new version was announced, the value of the original version plummeted. There is no way the previous version is worth $5000 now. Why pay that much when a newer, bigger & better one is available for $1000?

I'll probably just keep mine in storage. Maybe in another 10 years it's value will go back up a bit.

How's the fitment/quality though? I don't want to be fighting with pieces that don't line up or filing down stuff that won't snap together.

Search on youtube. I uploaded several reviews on them. Fitment is perfect. Might have a small problem with a few missing pieces though... but usually not a big deal.

the porsche gt3 i understand the appeal to adults because of the attention to details like the movable pistons

this is only really priced almost 1k because it's a star wars collectible

if it was a batmobile or some elaborate harry potter set, doubt there will be as much of a market for inflated prices

A friend of mine did just that. It took him a few years (5?), as he was snagging individual pieces off ebay etc. From what I remember, the cost was around $2000. He finished it around 2014-15, and the full sets were $4k+ back then.
