It's not too soon.....right?

I'm stoked.

Where is everyone riding this year? I'm hoping to venture out into the interior/baker this season as I have never been before. I picked up a Cypress pass so I can fit in some after work runs too.

Never too soon.

Picked up my Whistler earlier this year can't remember what deal I got. I think I got the deal with unlimited early season ski/snowboarding with 5 day pass.

Don’t think I’ll be able to afford much mountain time this year, but I’ll drive up with my friends for a good time, cypress a few times for sure and a couple days in whistler, as my friend has a condo up there

And how's Revy for that matter? We're thinking of making the commute to check it out this year.

Revy is consistently great and often amazing. The snow is fantastic and the mountain is well set up. Golden is good too, but not worth the extra drive past Revelstoke. Coming from the Alberta side, Golden is closer to Calgary and often people don't want to drive the extra time to Revy (or the pass is closed).

10-18-2017, 05:10 PM
After looking at the terrain maps again I might aim for a day at Revy this year. Golden/Kicking Horse looks like it has some great terrain, but when you really look at the map most of the black/double black runs are fairly short and you'd spend most of your time either traversing to them, taking feeder blues and green back from them, or going up one or more lifts back to the top. Revelstoke requires a bit of lift shuffling too but at least it looks like the majority of the time you're actually on the types of runs you want to be on.

That was what I didn't like about my trip to Fernie last year (aside from the lack of fresh snow), it seemed like I was spending all my time traversing, on feeders or on lifts just to get 3 turns in on the fun stuff.

I got a new board, but my wife's board probably needs some maintenance before the season starts.

interiors is the way to go with champagne powder boarding; the only catch for Revy is that it's vertical, so there ain't a lot of green runs for gfs or sign. others who aren't good to go boarding with you.

Nothing on the deal-searcher calendar because its early season pricing right now.

As far as I could tell from some research, its $59.99/day walk-up price when its at regular pricing. But right now it sounds like its 40% off for the early season pricing since probably a lot of it isn't open yet, plus they close at 4pm. So you're probably looking at $36/day before taxes right now.

Looking at whistler prices this year, for accommodation and lift tickets. Fuck. I may never go up there again and just do 2 or 3 catboarding trips instead.
Has anyone been to stevens pass or summit at snoqualmie? I definitely don't need the size of whistler if it means there aren't 950 billion people in the line for peak chair so they can be first to side slip West bowl and do two hours worth of snow removal on their first track.

I'm in the same boat really. Whister can be fantastic but is just out of reach time and money wise.

My buddy who moved to Seattle has said good things about Stevens Pass, I'm heading over in January to give it a shot.

Have you checked out Mt Baker? I went two years ago and was impressed. Definitely not as busy as Whistler.

^ was at baker last yr

pure boarding, no town to go boarding, no town to meet locals. we rented a cabin with 10 people, old school hipster cabin type living. Very cool.

distance wise it's "closer" than Whistler but longer to get there due to border. You then also save so much from beer drinking cause USA piss beer is so cheap.

westopher
11-14-2017, 08:01 AM
Yeah I do about 3-4 days in baker a year. It’s awesome, but even it is getting overloaded on weekends now. The border the last few times I’ve gone has been really mellow though. The guys at the Dumas crossing are pretty friendly at 530am when your car is full of snowboard gear.
I’m disappointed about whistler as that was a major factor in us buying our place in north van, but 135 dollar lift tickets to wait in line is garbage. I’d gladly pay it if it wasn’t bursting at the seems and there was actually pow to ride in bounds after noon.

ive never found baker to be busy, i went there 3x last year. border wait is non issue if you have nexus and cross.

USA has so many wicked craft beers and they have craft beer and wicked food at the baker lodge so i dunno how anyone can call it piss beer unless you choose to drink coors banquet or something.

It kind of reaffirmed what I complained about earlier though. It took us over an hour to pick up our lift tickets, line ups were massive. We were lucky to get home as I heard it was taking people over 6 hours to get back to Van.
Lift tickets were $132, no early season discount for 1/8th of the mountain being open which is a bit shit.
Its like travelling to a world class restaurant paying for your 12 course tasting menu and them telling you its actually just gonna be 3 courses tonight.
The terrain and snowfall are so good, its just offering way too little for what it costs. This is the first time in 7 years i won't be getting at least a 5 day edge card. It feels bad.
The runs I got though were great. I'll likely ride local next week then get a baker trip in the one after.

Definitely recommend on a pow pow day.

went to cypress today and it was great, a lot of fresh snow and the snow didnt let off.

visibility sucked tho, but couldnt really complain with the nice snow.

a couple of icy spots on like blacks and shit, but blues and green were pretty much good to go

watch out tho, with many kids learning to ski and board, speed patrol is out.

cypress this year is offering a new card similar to the GOLD CARD. its called the SKY CARD, about $200 - includes 3 free lifts then the regular discount after that the gold provides.

if you dont go cypress too often, saves yourself about 40$ on lift tickets and then whatever savings after

I know some places in Kelowna sell the 5 packs, you can also get a discount by reloading your day pass online. If you have a pass at another hill check the reciprocal discount and also check BCAA if you're a member.

This may not be the answer you're looking for, but even in the craziest of coastal storms, frigid high alpine rocky mountain temperatures, or even central Asia expeditions in the continental Siberian cold.... I only use a merino wool neck tube/buff. Top of the tube goes around the top of my head, bottom of the tube at my chin. Tuque and/or helmet on top. Jacket zipped all the way up all the time unless I'm getting something from an inner pocket or I'm dying of heat.

This is the only way I can actually get adequate ventilation for my damp breath. Anytime I am heading uphill, my body is producing enough heat to keep the chill off. On the way down, simply hiding inside my jacket provides adequate protection. I haven't lost the end of my nose to frostbite yet ;) .

If you find that the airhole balaclava, the one with a literal hole for you to breathe through, condenses too much moisture; maybe it's the execution of the equipment and not the equipment itself.

They're pretty close, the measurements are something like 172-140-158. The shop had to use the biggest brakes they had and then bend them outwards a bit just to fit. Despite looking a lot like giant popsicle sticks they actually work really well outside of powder. They're insanely light for the size and handle groomers and crud without a problem. The only thing they suck at is dense powder at warmer temps. There's so much surface area to pick up snow on top that your knees get thrashed trying to move it around.

That and I feel like a bit of a goob standing in line with them waiting for the chairs that only have green/blue runs trying to move around the mountain.

Did the provided screws that came with the bindings have some blue or red goop on them? If so, that's loctite; a compound which helps prevent the screws from loosening. It may take a little extra effort to screw in, but not substantially more.

Nope it had rust. I made a stop at Orchid Peaks' Sportschek and tried to pickup new screws for the Burton Pro Custom mounting plates. But since it's non standard screws, they directed me to the One Boardshop. Ended up buying a set of new mounting plates + screws.

I did end up pb blasting the holes LOL. Aside from making everything stink, luckily, the screws aren't loose. But as a precaution, I brought along a set of hand tools LOL.

Sportschek might still have a sale. Check out the board shops on 4th (the boardroom, Pacific boarder, west coast sports, etc), they might have a wider variety of sales and sizes, but it might be a little more pricy.

I would not cheap out on the boots and helmet. You can probably save some money buying a used board. If money isn't too much of an issue, I'd get new bindings too.

I got my board + 2 sets of bindings for $300 on Craigslist. Boots was $200 before tax at Sportschek (this was sale price). Don't remember how much my helmet was, but I got that from MEC.

What a fucking nightmare yesterday. Was suppose to go up to manning park, but Allison pass was closed Saturday AM so my friend and I decided fuck it just do cypress. What a huge mistake. Was a bit behind waiting for my friend to show up, so we were going to get there for opening.

Well.... we got stuck half way up cypress bowl road at 9am in gridlock traffic. Took us until 10:20am to get parked at the farthest end of the 3rd lot. We took my RS so you can imagine after over an hour of gridlock UPHILL my clutch was smelling to high heavens. Was so unhappy about that man. We have our own gear so no rentals (thank god). Mountain was packed so bad with noobs. I’m not saying I’m good, I’m green/blue runs but people who can’t merge in lift line ups, people who can’t get on the chair lift, all that Jazz.

Lion lift was taking 10-15 minutes in line, eagle was about 25 minutes. So fucked and really ruins the day. Not going to go weekend again. Icing on the cake took 2:25hrs to get from Taylor way to Richmond. So done with this city

Costco usually has good helmets/goggles/gloves, for boots/skis/board/bindings I'd check Craigslist or second hand shops. If someone is just starting out they're better off starting on cheaper gear and saving their money to get better stuff in the future once they get a feel for what kind of stuff they want to ride.

Line-ups were a little cuckoo because they didn't open the mountain until 10AM. Too much snow, too much avalanche danger. Here's the base of Whistler. But once you got up it wasn't too bad.

Other than that, it's a good little mountain with snow. Definitely recommend the black run "Heaven" on the left most-side of the mountain, always good fun if it has fresh powder.

Only really two chairs worth using on the mountain, we tend to use the Sasquatch chair if the wind isn't too bad, if it's windy we head over and stay on the Skyline chair.

Any other questions?

FYI if anyone is looking for gear Sport Chek has some wicked deals right now. The pricing in store can be cheaper than online, and if you sign up for their newsletter you get emailed a coupon for 10% off. Then on top of that you can get 20-50x the Canadian Tire money. I just snagged a pair of K2 Marksmans for under $400 taxes in, normally they're $650 + tax.

Just an FYI, I went to Cypress to get some night boarding in today and Lions Express lift broke. Not sure when they'll have it up tomorrow.

Was up there tonight as well, too bad Lions wasn't open.

They updated for tomorrow though:

Lions Express Chair Update:

At approximately 5pm tonight the Lions Express Chair experienced a mechanical issue within the gear box. Our maintenance team have now identified the issue as a drive failure. In order to ensure safe operations, the Lions Express Chair will be immediately repaired. Our maintenance team is working 24/7 to get Lions Express Chair back up and running as soon as possible.

Lions Express and Sky Chair, which is accessed by Lions Express Chair, will be on stand-by until we have the drive repaired. We apologize for the inconvenience.

All other lifts will be in regular operation (Eagle Express, Raven Ridge, Easy Rider, Midway Chair). All Lift Tickets will be 25% off.

Thanks for your patience and sorry for the inconvenience.

What's the skiing like at Cypress/Grouse/Seymour? I see they've got black/double black runs listed but are they actually challenging? Or are they just short pitches that are a little bit steeper and a little bumpy. I've mostly skied Big White so if anyone can relate them to parts of BW that would be much appreciated.

Never gone to Grouse or Seymour or even Big White but I enjoy Cypress very much. I do find the black runs challenging but with that being said, not sure if my few couple of years experience is worth anything more than a grain of salt :fullofwin:

some of their double blacks are runs that run under lifts. generally shorter runs with bumps and dips. upper bowen and bowen face are like that i believe. first sun is not that bad for a black diamomnd, havent been on many of them tho

This season has literally been 100% pow days for me. Over 50 so far.

Another storm pulse headed towards Whistler this weekend. This will probably be the last one of the season. Get it while the going's good!

RS meet Friday or Monday?

I'm a maybe on a ski meet. Still in locations-undisclosed working on the route book for the Spring Thaw. Should be back in Squamish late tonight...planning on skiing tomorrow if so.
