Dig around a little here, if I recall correctly, opticoat price is high because cost to buy it went up.

I had my MR2 opticoated there a month or so after getting it painted. That was 3 years ago, and water still beads off perfectly.
+1 for Autowerkes
Ken is an awesome guy :)

lots of different brands to choose from, at the end of the day they achieve the same thing. be warned tho, as ive read into this ceramic coating thing years ago and the process is very advanced. it's not like a wax where u wipe on and then wipe off. if u mess up the application, it will cause permanent staining on the paint surface. not sure if it has improved over the years where any beginner can apply it as a DIY.

Anyone know how well it fares against rock chips?

No help against chips, you'll need a clear bra for that.

i heard it costs a fortune to put on. If thats the case why not just clear bra the whole car

Pretty much a really good sealant that protects you from bird shit and other crap that might get on your paint for 5+ years instead of having to wax multiple times a year.

Look at the link I gave you and you'll see why the choice between ceramic coating and paint protection film is not obvious. Hint: look at the prices

afaik, the cost of install is only that high (2k+) because your paint need to be flawless before it gets applied. So its really the cost of a 2+ stage polish and detail, PLUS the opticoat.
If you opticoat over a layer of swirls, those swirls will just be locked in forever.

The last time I talked to Ken at Autowerkes, which has been a couple years now, he said the the companies jacked the prices up a lot. It doesn't matter if your car is brand new and only needs a light polish, you're paying whatever the fixed price is.
Looking at his website the prices are at least 800 bucks more now than when I had my truck done 3 years ago.
