We all know who the real villain is.

Has both Ralph Machio and William Zabka (Johnny)? Legs will be swept without a doubt. I'll watch because I'm a sucker for 80's nostalgia.

Just watched the latest trailer, and I am kind of surprised, both by how the latest Cobra Kai / Karate Kid story develops, and how I didn't catch on earlier:

So all this marketing about YouTube Red subscription model and it's not even available in Canada? :seriously:
Anyone able to find a legit streaming site?
SkinnyPupp

It must be in Canada.. it's $16 HKD per episode here ($2 USD)
Spoon

You can buy episodes here for $2.49. But it's likely not something I want to own or rewatch. Much rather go for a subscription model.
This show is actually way better than I thought it'd be lol

OMG WHEN IS SEASON 2 PogChamp
Seriously, while it did have some cringey moments, this 10 episode series was practically like a 5 hour movie for me. It could have been a silly fun nostalgic trip, and that would have been fine (see my first replies to this thread). But it went so far beyond that, while maintaining the nostalgia in such a thoughtful way. It's still cheesy as hell, and that's part of its charm, but it's also clever, very well cast, well scripted, and with more than a touch of darkness that just ties it all together perfectly for me.
10/10 for me, can't wait for S2!

Even when I watched the movie before I was 10, and a million times after that, I always thought Daniel was a dick. Especially the unprovoked shower scene... The real reason to watch was Mr Miyagi. He was my hero, and a father figure for me growing up. He's the one who centered Daniel (in the sequels as well), and while that "bully" video is done in jest, it probably makes a good point overall.

You're right, thinking back to when I was a kid it was always about Miyagi. I didn't have any of those strong I feel sorry for you and I'm cheering for you feels towards Daniel.

I could still empathize with the Daniel character, as someone who got bullied in school. But for me it was more like "This kid is different from us, let's pick on him" rather than "this kid is an asshole who's fucking with us and standing up for himself, let's kick his ass"
But overall it was all about Miyagi for me
Glad Season 2 is confirmed SeemsGood
I'm watching it over again with my wife, who wasn't the biggest Karate Kid fan, but enjoys good television and this is great television! SeemsGood

Binge watched it all in one day. WHY IS IT SO GOOD
Only dislike was the actor who played Robby; uninteresting character, but was needed for Johnny's family dynamic

IMO, Daniel is still a dick, which is why I am still rooting for Johnny. But WTF is Johnny still hanging out with his old sensei for?

No spoilers, but damn what a crazy ending. Season 3 was just announced last month and I look forward to seeing how Johnny figures this all out.

The S2 ending was indeed phenomenal, and I actually liked it better than the S1 ending. With S2 ending on such a complicated note, however, I don't know how the director / script writers are going to fix the mess though. Damn...
But I guess that's precisely the reason why the show is getting us so hooked.

I haven't seen any of the shows right now... and I haven't seen Karate Kid since I was... like maybe not even 10 years old....
Is it mandatory do you think to watch the movie prior to watching the show? Would it improve the experience?
MarkyMark
06-14-2019, 01:40 PM
I don't think so, as long as you understand the premise of what happened in the first movie you'll be good, they do a lot of quick flashbacks that showed what happened.

I'd definitely watch S1 before watching S2 though.

The premise is enough, and they show a lot of flashbacks. The characters are REALLY built up around the movie, and expanded upon a LOT.
Johnny Lawrence went from being a typical 80s high school bully villain in the movie, to one of the best TV show characters I can recall watching, in this series.
It's such a good movie though, that you really should watch it again. It just came out again in 4K HDR

News on season 3 is that the writers just started hammering out the new scripts starting last month. I was reading an interview with Johnny, and he went over how pretty much all of the characters were broken in some way at the end of season 2. No one left that episode without it taking a toll on them. Season 3 has the potential to be really good, and I'm looking forward to it coming out in 2020.

Johnny is such a great character in so many ways. I'm about 3 or 4 eps in and it's just as good as it always was. Those Pat Morita flashbacks get me every time, as he was like a father figure for me since I didn't really have a real one BibleThump
Him and Patrick Stewart... When the time comes for Stewart to leave us, I will be a wreck

I just finished watching Season 3, it is a GREAT show. Definitely lots of nostalgia factors in it ... old flame makes an appearance!
And the girl she saved comes back as the VP of the car company, :victory: moment!

Watched season 1 with the wife. My kid wanted to watch it the other day so she took him downstairs while I watched sports. I figured he’d watch 5 minutes and get bored and that’d be the end of it. Well, she got into binge mode and watched seasons 2 and 3 and now I’m all FOMO. :lol

Daniel's wife had some limited but great scene stealing lines in the show.
At dinner "Have the man-boys told you about their battle to the death end of the world warring karate dojos?"
"What are you Tango and Cash?"
