89 drivers ticketed in 2 hours despite 'Police ahead – Stay off your phone' signs

https://bc.ctvnews.ca/89-drivers-tic...igns-1.3833713

Quote:
Even with large, lit-up signs warning of an upcoming police checkpoint, dozens of drivers on the North Shore were still caught using their phones behind the wheel.

North Vancouver Mounties set up several signs as part of an awareness campaign Tuesday, forewarning drivers that they'd be watching.

The signs, which read, "Police ahead – Stay off your phone," were in full view of those approaching the intersections.

The two-hour operation was held between 3:30 and 5: 30 p.m. at Capilano Road and Marine Drive in North Vancouver, and at Taylor Way and Marine Drive in West Vancouver.

During that time, officers issued tickets to 89 drivers, 74 of which were for distracted driving. The remaining tickets were for other offences under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Using an electronic device while driving has been banned in B.C. for eight years, but is still considered a leading cause of crashes.

"It is evident there is still more education and enforcement needed to make our roads safer," Cpl. Richard De Jong said in a statement following the exercise.

The penalty for a single distracted driving infraction is a $368 fine and four demerit points. On a first infraction, the driver will also have to pay a $175 penalty point premium to ICBC.

Those with two or more infractions in a three-year period will be charged a driver risk premium, billed annually, which will increase with each conviction.

People think they're more important than they actually are which is why they keep using their phones while driving. The car becomes the castle and they become the Queen / King.

The sweet irony is a very small % of society would actually care if these people wrapped their tiny heads around a telephone pole.

Distracted drivers don't see signs warning about distracted driving. Why does that not sound surprising?

I think one of the problems is that there's this misconception that it's the act of having the phone to your face, or texting by hand that's the danger. Rather than your mind being disengaged by carrying a conversation. While both are a distraction, far less accidents are caused while texting than people on handsfree. Yet just about every car sold nowadays has the technology built in.

Driving a manual transmission will be distracted driving. Then it will include paddle shifters.

I've always viewed a manual transmission as a way to keep me more focused, rather than distracted.
You're forced to pay attention to your revs, and speed. Automatic makes it easier for drivers to zone out.

My friend got pulled over in new west for distracted driving. Officer saw him move his hand down from the steering wheel. He was shifting his car into neutral at the light LOL.

I will reiterate once again. This is nothing but a cash grab, plain and simple. Do you think it's a coincidence they are ramping this up with ICBC's major fiscal shortfalls?

We live in a Province that has the worst criminal case completion rate in the country, by a LARGE margin, not even close. Yet this is what our local forces are focusing on? Absolutely ridiculous. Spare me on the "they're traffic cops, it's different from regular policing", another crap excuse.

This Province's priorities are so bizarre. Meanwhile we have a number of serial killers on the loose in this city, and a still unsolved murder of a young child in the Burnaby RCMP's backyard, Central Park. Keep catching those people at red lights on their phone though, A+

They're ramping it up because there's been an approximately 30% increase in vehicle accidents in the past five years. Largely related to distracted driving. The increase in accidents is in large part responsible for those fiscal shortfalls.

And it's not just cell phone use, IMO.
Anyone who works for a dealership, or frequently purchases new vehicles, can attest to the fact that creature comforts have dramatically increased in the past decade. You have a large touchscreen head unit with multiple menus, controlling audio, Bluetooth, climate controls, climate controlled massage seats, 360 degree cameras, lane assist, blind spot detection.. And then you have your gauge cluster with info centre and multiple menus there.

There are many many more distractive mechanisms in vehicles these days than there were even five years ago. It's been a pretty rapid increase across all makes.

Then there are those autonomous vehicles................

If I saw one with no driver, I'd be distracted. Not as much as prancing chicks in shiny, tight, blue dresses, though.

I think the number is closer than people think. I know four people that have gotten into accidents while texting (luckily nothing too serious). None of them volunteered that information to anyone involved be it the other driver, cops, or insurance company.

We'll never really know the ratio though so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Those stats in the posted article were from the states. Maybe the insurance companies are more detailed with their claims down there

That's about 2-3 cars at the end of the line that are prevented from making the light. Even people who aren't texting at lights take too much time to get going sometimes.
