West Vancouver police impounded more than $400,000 of vehicles overnight Tuesday and that was just in one traffic stop.

Just after midnight Wednesday, West Vancouver officers spotted two leadfoots travelling west on the Cut. Police clocked the drivers of a 2015 Corvette and a 2018 McLaren 702s, both going about 150 kilometres per hour on Highway 1 at Lonsdale Avenue - an 80 km/h zone - and pulled them over.

The drivers, a 21-year-old Burnaby man, and a 25-year-old Richmond man, were each handed $468 excessive speeding tickets and had their cars towed to the impound lot for seven days.

A 2015 ‘Vette goes for about $70,000. The McLaren has a base price of over $312,000.

“I would imagine the tow truck driver is wanting to be extremely careful when they’re loading something like that up,” said Const. Jeff Palmer, West Vancouver police spokesman.

The two men were travelling together although there was no indication they racing, Palmer said.

So far this year, West Vancouver officers have impounded 90 drivers’ vehicles for excessive speeding – more than double the 42 they’d seized by this point last year.

Of those, 54 were caught on Highway 1. Cypress Bowl Road is the next most likely spot to get pinched speeding where police have called tow trucks 27 times to impound vehicles this year.

Palmer said Upper Levels Highway may be something of a destination to re-enact the Cannonball Run. An analysis of the tickets issued by police found only five to 10 per cent of them are handed out to West Vancouver residents.

“I think there certainly is some public perception this is all a bunch of wealthy young people from West Van taking supercars out for a drive, but when we actually looked into the files, there was just a very small percentage of them that were actually local residents. The vast majority were from elsewhere in the Lower Mainland,” he said.

Of the 90 drivers whose whips have been sent to car-jail, 72 are men aged 19 to 55, according to police.

i missed this one from a week earlier:

West Vancouver police catch driver going 71 km/h over the limit. And it was just a test drive

The West Vancouver police called it a file that almost sounds like an April Fool’s joke, except that it really happened.

And was very dangerous for anyone else on the road.

On Tuesday, the police department tweeted about how they caught a driver on a test drive travelling at a dangerously high speed on the Upper Levels Highway.

The driver was going 161 km/h in a 90 km/h zone close to 22nd Street.

Police issued the driver a speeding ticket and now the car can’t be delivered for a whole week.

This is far from the first time that West Vancouver police have had to target vehicles travelling at dangerous speeds on the Upper Levels Highway.

the McLaren driver is probably more embarrassed that he's only travelling with a corvette and not a fleet of ferrari/lambos.

makes him feel better rolling a car 4.5x the price of a vette.

That McLaren must be super rare never heard of a 702s.

Or it's actually a 720s

Heard over the radio that the car was a new WRX, kinda makes me wonder if that was why my Subaru sales rep just handed me the keys for a solo test drive on a wrx.

What a dumb stat.
No shit, so is 70% of the population.

Pretty sure men 19-55 are not 70% of the population. Maybe in fort st john

150km/h only? I was expecting 200+ km/h for those cars. I have seen ppl drive on hwy 1 in SUV and normal cars going 130km/h +
At least they did it on hwy in the middle of the night with not much cars around.

At those speeds it feels like they are practically crawling. They were probably getting great fuel economy too :)

TBH, that's a terrible time to be speeding on those roads. Cops are everywhere!
Now if your out in the wee hours of the morning during weekdays, there's practically no law enforcement.

...not that I was speeding or anything.

Revscene would be in a state of pandemonium if I revealed how fast i've gone on the cut... Gotta head out of the city now if you wanna do that kind of stuff.

Honestly, I'm surprised it wasn't 100% of those who's "whips went to jail."
Was the other 30% men aged 18 or 56?

I know nsnews is not the gold standard but 'the cut' and 'whip'?
150 is kinda nothing though on that stretch when it's not bumper2bumper...feathering the throttle gets you 120 westbound
I try to keep it under 118 so my vehicle won't get impounded

Son with cell phone: "Pa, get me the best lawyers in town I am in trouble and wire me CAD400,000 cash, so I can pick up the Mclaren Senna next week."

Father: "Hao!"

If you ever do a Scenic Rush driving day you regularly hit these speeds throughout your driving experience... it takes like 5 seconds in most of these cars from a standstill...

I have seen that McLaren parked outside the English school on Cambie and Robson for the past few days.

I thought Scenic Rush is pretty strict about speeding and will have their own cars follow/pace you, don't they?

I mean, mine would be pissed if something like this happened.

But apparently, parenting is just "sending money to your kids and you are good" to some.

To me that makes it even more pointless to do. The car has no problem doing it and I can't imagine it's even that exciting so you're risking an impound for basically nothing.

Mind you I find driving fast in a straight line incredibly boring so maybe I'm wrong.

a routine lane pass is easily 140 for most cars nowadays....

need to update our speed limits and further enhance licensing.

When you have only one kid
When you have been living in poverty for 20-40 years
When you suddenly become so rich
When you feel guilty sending your kid to oversea alone

Still didn't beat this guy from 3 weeks ago. 162 km/h, 92 over the limit in a good old E55.

But hey, his car was on tv, at least he got that out of it.

"A driver was slapped with a hefty fine and a roadside impoundment after police say they were clocked at more than 90 km/h above the speed limit.
The driver was pulled over in Maple Ridge Sunday in the area of Golden Ears Way and 113B Avenue.

The sedan will sit in an impound lot for at least seven days, Mounties said, and the driver may be subject to a driver risk premium of $320 a year for the next three years. Drivers in a similar situation could also face a criminal charge for dangerous driving, police said. Sunday's incident was the highest speed Mounties have seen on the stretch of road this year, they said."

Speed limits are great for the old cars. I’m quite happy cruising at 90km/h in my old beast. Last night I was brainlessly driving home at midnight on empty roads/highways when I realized my highway blazing beast of an Acura TSX was comfortably cruising near 50% over the limit. Oops. Until we all are driving new cars or some serious updates to licensing and training happen we should keep the speeds down. I also saw a 335i in the parking lot with slicks.... or just bald tires. If there isn’t maintenance checks, we can’t trust owners to upkeep their vehicles for high speeds. Idiots

Fastest I've ever gone was on that stretch. Coming up the cut just before you round the corner at the top you floor it. Long downhill under Lonsdale towards West Van to help with momentum. Lay off as you pass the next underpass and your good for the corner into West Van just don't go into that corner to hot! lol

Berz out.
