Not enough N driver on the road gotta add more L driver too

In a move it says is a first for the North American carshare industry, BC-based carshare co-op program Modo announced today that drivers as young as 16 with ‘Learners” or “L” licenses can now participate in the program.

In a release, Modo said it hopes the move will “will inspire the next generation to consider carsharing over car ownership.”


Modo’s fleet includes over 600 vehicles across the Lower Mainland, on Vancouver Island, and in the Okanagan.

“It’s very fitting that Modo is the first carshare in North America to enable younger people and those with an “L” to use our service, as it aligns exceptionally well with our purpose,” said Modo’s Director of Marketing, Selena McLachlan. “Learners… are able to join the co-op… while driving behaviours are still being formed.”

Green Members will join under a Principal Member’s account, who must be a member-owner of the co- op, 25 or older, with a full license.

Like all drivers with an “L,” they must be accompanied by an adult with a full license.

Under Modo’s Green Member Program, this can be the Principal Member, or a “qualified supervisor” as per ICBC’s rules and regulations.

For some reason ive been seeing a bunch of these guys with Ls on their cars driving like shit, running stop signs, no signal lane changes. Apparently they think putting an L on their car allows them to do whatever the f they want even though they have their "full" foreign licence.

I think with L drivers you're going to be seeing a lot of clueless drivers who don't know where/what to do especially given the summer season where people venture to places they don't normally go to...I hope they can actively enforce the "supervisor" requirement...

L drivers will still need someone in the car with a full license. I think its great for people who may not have access to a car.

Hmm true. Or this will increase their access to get a car without having to ask their parents permission. I wonder if it needs a full license or parents ID to unlock or something.

A class 7/8 road test only charges $35, and a class 5/6 road test charges $50. At those prices, I'd be very surprised if ICBC doens't lose money on each and every exam.

By my own guess, ICBC needs to be charging $80 - $100 per road test (if not higher) in order for them to turn in a profit on this service.
