Vancouver police are asking for help in nabbing vandals who damaged dozens of cars on Vancouver’s west side.

Police say at least 78 vehicles have been scratched and slashed over the the past several months. The latest incident happened on the weekend in the Dunbar area.

The VPD says car owners in Kitsilano, Dunbar and Kerrisdale have reported various designs such as “Z”, “M” and smiling faces being etched into car paint, soft-top-roofs being slashed, and several car emblems stolen.

VPD spokesman Const. Jason Doucette says they are investigating five spates of the vandalism stemming back to March.

Investigators have security footage of a person damaging a parked car on May 31 near West 12th Avenue and MacDonald. The video shows the vandal concealing his identity while purposely scratching the paint and cutting the roof of a convertible.

Doucette said that police have not identified a motive or reason, adding that he has not seen a case like this.

“What’s wrong here is the person is victimizing these vehicles for no apparent reason and we want to hold them responsible,” he said.

The perpetrator would likely face charges of mischief and damage to property, leading to civil cases. The VDP says the repairs would cost well over $100,000.

ICBC spokesperson Joanna Linsangan said one repairing one panel could easily cost a couple thousand dollars.

“It’s safe to say this overall is going to cost hundreds of thousands,” she said.

In collaboration with the RCMP, ICBC is looking through past cases for trends in search of more people who could have been impacted by this same vandal.

“We have been looking through our old claims as well, and it looks as though that potentially this activity actually started as early as last year.”

If someone is convicted, there would be a path for the insurance company to take the vandal to court and recoup damages through civil claim.

“This isn’t a harmless prank. There are 78 victims that we know of right now who have to pay, together, thousands of dollars to get their vehicles fixed on top of what ICBC has to pay to get their vehicles in working condition,” Linsangan said. “Some people aren’t inclined to call the police to make a report.”

Detectives would like to hear from anyone with dash-cam video who was driving in the area of West 37th Avenue and Mackenzie Street between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Monday.

Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to contact the investigators at 604-717-0613 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
