so i work up north on night shift, the northern lights are not an uncommon sight. i saw them yesterday and none of my pics turned out. theres usually a fairly brief window when im not working and the lights are bright enough for a photo.

i have a oneplus 3t it has a manual mode, i tried playing with the iso settings but i have no clue what i am doing. i could possibly have a place to rest the phone while i take pics, but i will def not have a tripod or anything for long exposure.

i have iso 100-3200.

white balance: cloudy, daylight, auto, flourescent, incandesent

shutter speed 1/8000 to 30 sec

so if someone could point me in the right direction it would be awesome. thanks

Get a tripod, you'll need it, start with 15 sec shutter speed and about 1500 iso.
If it's too dark try longer shutter speed max should be about 25 secs. And lower iso abit.
U'll need the tripod or something really steady to hold the phone otherwise it'll have light trails. Even better if you have that little Bluetooth clicker from selfie sticks so you don't have to touch the phone to take a pic.

Good luck, I learned it by experience driving middle of the night on Crowsnest Hwy. Lol

Maybe the photo guys can chime in about smartphone cameras for more specifics.

I'm literally at work so walking around site with a tripod is not an option. I could possibly get a mini tripod setup and maybe set it up on my truck or something if that's the only way though.

it'll likely turn out very grainy...phone's tiny sensors are quite weak for low-light photos
but doesn't hurt getting a cheap mini tripod and trying it out

youd be surprised at some of the new phones camera capabilities. im still get surprised when someone takes a pic and they say they took it on their phones.

since it can shoot raw and long exposures, I would def give it a go with a mini tripod

Just duck tape it to something if you cant use a tripod.

Also, remember to use the delayed shutter release, 2 sec should be good. That way you don't move the camera when you tap to start the shot.
