Just saw a image from my FB feed saying Golden Oscars on Rupert and 22nd is officially closed due to redevelopment. Man this place was a staple for late night eats and personally had the best tasting and value Baked Pork Chop on Rice.

Its a sad end to a great place..

I used to live in that area. Lots of fond memories going there after 9pm for their mini meal specials after studying at UBC. Curry beef brisket rice and baked pork chop rice were my favs.

I can name off like 10 in a heart beat.....

Maxim’s Restaurant
Café Gloucester告羅士打餐廳
I Cafe
Copa Café
Sun Tin Day Cafe
BT Cafe
Goldstone Bakery and Restaurant ( so good.. esp when i'm in china town)
If that's full then I go to New Town Bakery & Restaurant
Kwan Luck Restaurant
my fav go to is 香港味道 Hong Kong No 1 Chinese restaurant in BBY

then you got your standard Happy Day in Burnaby...

There are TONS and I'm not even going to mention Richmond places yet.

Which of these places would you say is comparable to Golden Oscars Bakes Porkchop on rice? Golden Oscars sauce to cheese was just perfect. Every where else i've tried the sauce is to much and to sweet.

which Asian establishment doesn't have rats?

I don't mind more HK diner recommendations in Vancouver...so go ahead and list some instead of only criticizing someone else's list

Silver tower is the closest to Golden Oscar, they're of the same pedigree. Don't forget oscar's philosophy was cheap eats for mediocre homestyle food.

Some of the examples listed are a price level up (copa, gloucester) or just terrible (Happy day's HK style food isn't even as good as the non-cafe-style Congee Noodle King)

When I'm in the Main/Broadway area I'll hit up Kams Restaurant and Bakery. In Richmond I'll go to AAA cafe for their HK style breakfast/noodle soup.

For cheap late night eats I like any of the Congee Noodle restaurants or Silver Tower if I am in Richmond.

Happy Day is at the bottom of my list. The food, prices and store hours aren't very good.

For a lower cost HK cafe and near by Golden Oscar, there is Duo Tian. Its upstairs where T&T on 1st avenue is.
Food is alright. I find BT Cafe way better
I go there for their breakfast. Under $10 plus tax and tip

Thank god this place is closing, it was easily the worst place of it's kind in the City. I was sure they survived this whole time because of location as I've heard other people often say that they reluctantly go because the alternative is too far but it does appear some people legitimately are fans. Did they still have the dumb rule where you can't get drinks to go, like it was literally not an option?

yeah always thought it was average at best
I did like its hole-in-the-wall traditional diner with cheap food feel, though

Ate there a couple times, wasn't really memorable.

I won't miss the traffic from people trying to get into that plaza though. All the left turners trying to get into the alley from 22nd + all the parents parked to pick up their kids made it a mess there around 3.

There's a moron in a 4runner who *still* parks in the No Stopping zone on 22nd westbound. I've seen him do that for at least 3 years. I guess there's been enough complaints that 22nd on the school side, that this school year, it's now 5 mins pickup/drop off only.

I used to live in that area, too. I remember when Chong Lee used to be Stongs.

The main things I miss about happy date: pretty cheap, open early (<9am)/closes late (>10pm), decent quality.
Aside from Lido, anyone else have richmond recommendations that meet that criteria?

AAA or Silver Tower

AAA or Silver Tower

AAA is no longer the Lido copy cat. They don't serve the ABC stuff anymore they're strictly a pick your broth, noodle, and protein type place now. God I fucking hate those noodle places why is everyone so crazy about it?

Hopewell, 2nd floor at the plaza on Renfrew and 1st ave is decent, not the best but a decent choice and certainly the options are pretty slim in the area anyway.

In addition to what's already posted, there's also SoHo which is on Cambie & 19th that serves some HK cafe style food

Soho Tea Room Menu - Cambie and 19th, Vancouver (http://www.sohotearoom.com/menu.html)

Only went there once and it was just OK

Richmond has 3 main places.
a) below superstore on #3 rd bbq master is the name
b) inside parker place (butcher take out); one of the few places with entire BBQ guninea pig for weddings. The food court is also very legit.
c) master hung bbq @ 8780 blundell

I guess we can thank Deer Garden for that... they were good back then. Quality went down and prices went up. I haven't been there in about 2 years.
