WTF is this SHIT?
Anti-Vaxxers should get their own isolated community, and see how they fare without immunizations.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) (https://www.citynews1130.com/2019/02/15/third-measles-case-vancouver/) – There are now three confirmed cases of measles in Vancouver, all with ties to french-language schools.

“We have at least one other suspected case, but it hasn’t been confirmed by lab tests just yet,” Tiffany Akins with Vancouver Coastal Health said.

The first case was confirmed over the weekend.

On Wednesday, the health authority had confirmed the second case. On Friday, it confirmed the third.

These are the three schools where the disease has been exposed:
École Jules-Verne (first 2 cases)
École Anne-Hébert (third case)
École Rose-Des-Vents (suspected)

All of the people with the confirmed cases are under 18. Akins would not say whether they were vaccinated.

“We aren’t revealing vaccination information for any of the cases because we need to protect their privacy, as they are considered patients,” she said.

“I can say that … the majority of people who get measles are unvaccinated,” she added.

She says notices have been sent to parents at the three schools.

“We are collecting information from people including parents, kids, and staff from the affected schools. We need to figure out where people have been, who they’ve been in contact with, have they had any symptoms.”

Akins says it’s “very unlikely that any of the cases are related to the outbreaks in the U.S. or Europe,” noting it’s more likely they contracted it locally from someone else who had it.

“An infected person can spread measles before knowing that they’ve been infected. People are infectious to others from four days before to four days after they have the rash.”

Vaccine is bad even though it's one of the most important invention of mankind in the 20th century that reduces mortality rate, right after washing your hands.

The Earth is flat even though we can literally see satellite images that it's round.

Etc,etc.

These people should be leave to self-select themselves out.

I vaguely remember a study showing that measles vaccinated high school children were actually the ones spreading the disease.

You dont have to be like the majority anti vaxxers that fall under rich and intelligent moms who can sit home all day and do more research then your average 'higher valued tradie doctor' to decipher what the truth is. Watch this documentary.

Serious question.

Is measles like chicken pox or is it way worse? For some reason, I have it in my head measles is like chicken pox, if so, is it really that big of a deal.

I mean, i'm all for vaccination and all, but is measles that bad?

Yes. Highly-contagious airbourne-spread disease that results in extremely high fevers and pneumonia. Mortality rate is 0.2% (1 in 500) and most who die are children.

Airbourne-spread diseases can quickly overwhelm hospitals as there are not a lot of negative-pressure isolation rooms relative to the number of regular inpatient beds.

Chicken pox is spread via contact or droplets (e.g. someone coughing/sneezing on you). Droplet-spread infections are much easier to control. Chicken pox also has a much lower mortality rate and much milder symptoms.

They are two different viruses. The measles virus hits the body harder than the pox.

While both exhibit the same symptoms, measles has a higher probability of infecting the lungs which can cause potential complications.

Then there's Shingles which I had last year. I wouldn't even wish it on anyone I hated. It's that torturous.

I find it quite strange that all incidents so far are occurring at French language schools (French immersion).

There may or may not be any correlations to this, but as humans, we always look for patterns to explain stuff, and my reptilian brain keeps telling me there has to be something to explain the all-French language school bit.

Individuals born on or after January 1, 1970 (January 1, 1957 for health care workers) need laboratory evidence of measles immunity OR documentation of 2 doses of a measles-containing vaccine.

A Washington state House committee on Friday passed a bill to ban the personal or philosophical exemption for the vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) for school-age children amid an outbreak of the virus.

...

Gov. Jay Inslee (D) declared a state of emergency in Washington late last month following a measles outbreak.

There have been 53 confirmed cases of measles as of Thursday afternoon, according to health officials in Clark County, an anti-vaccination “hot spot” near Portland, Ore., where a vast majority of this year’s measles cases have been located.

Of the 53 confirmed cases, 47 people were not immunized against the illness and one had the MMR vaccine

Western societies have largely been the drivers of science and vaccinations for so long that we've gone generations without witnessing major health issues like these. Without those deadly reminders, some have been lulled into thinking the risks are minimal. The notion of victims-of-ones-own-success comes to mind with the emergence of these Anti-Vaxxer types. The same goes for the lack of conflict and war at home and why you see people travel to dangerous parts of the world thinking everyone will just get along, and then they end up murdered.

Here's an article about how vaccines work:
https://www.publichealth.org/public-awareness/understanding-vaccines/vaccines-work/

It may or may not work on you depending on your immune system, especially the flu-shot ones.
They inject a little bit of the virus/bacteria in you so your immune system gets triggered and recognize it. The next time you become infected, your immune system combats it right away.

Everyone's immune system is different, so this is why the controversy arise.

I'm going to make a few corrections here.

Flu-shots are different every year. There is an algorithm that determines the most likely strains of the flu and based on that, the vaccine is created. Again, there are many types of strains of the flu and it is a "best guess" type situation. Just you get it doesn't mean you're covered for everything which is why you should get it every year.

It isn't so much that they inject a bit of the virus/bacteria, it is actually the attenuated virus/bacteria where they are no longer virulent. By this I mean that they have been modified in such a way that they do not have the ability to infect or damage the host but are still viable. This is important because your immune system will attack it like any outside organism that isn't supposed to be there and then compiles it as a record so when you are up against it again, it knows what to do.

The next statement that your immune system recognizes it and combats it right away is correct. You still might get a bit sick but your recovery time is substantially increased.

Last sentence is a bit of a mine field. Although you're right that everyone's immune system is different, I would not associate that with why controversy arises.

The yearly flu vaccine is manufactured on based on information on which strain of Influenza is likely to hit North America. Not all strains are included in the vaccine. There are many influenza viruses; hence the letters and number of the virus (H1N1 Swine Flu).

Read more here: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/viruses/types.htm

The MMR vaccine is different as it targets a specific type of virus/bacteria.

There are some that think they were "fine and not sick" prior to a vaccine. Then get sick after. (I was fine prior to the flu vaccine, then after I was sick and bed ridden for several days.) These people had a legitimate experience. But how they think they got sick is incorrect.

Most likely these people were already battling a virus or bacteria prior to the infection. The added work load on the immune system the vaccine added was what tipped them into being sick with the original virus or bacteria.

Imagine your immune system as an engine and you are applying full throttle. It straining hard already. You add a shot of nitrous and it works harder and blows up. It's not the nitrous chemical that made it blow up; the added demand blew the engine.

You can not get sick from the vaccine as there are no live viruses.

The controversy arise with the flu-shots is it doesn't work for everyone. Every individual's immune system is different.

I completely agree with vaccines shot for the major viruses like measles though.

I don't think that the "controversy" arises because it doesn't work for everyone because people's immune systems are different. Vaccines don't work because it isn't designed for the strain of pathogen that one experiences.

Say the 2018 vaccine is designed for Flu A but the person experiences/contracts Flu B. By taking the vaccine for Flu A, it will not be effective in fighting Flu B which may lead someone to think "vaccines don't work for me". It simply isn't that the vaccine doesn't work, it's just you happened to have contracted a different strain.
