| Where to Buy Helmet
Typically this would sit in the locally where to buy thread, but I'm heading to Portland for the long weekend and I was wondering if there's a place somewhere between here and Portland, and a little past that, where I can find a good deal?
Preferably in Portland for that tax free goodness.

What kind of helmet you want is probably going to be important unless there's some kind of helmet emporium down there.

Looking for a helmet for racing, ie autox and track days. Don't really have a preference for open or closed face.

I might have a used one you can have for nothing, one of my old motorcycle helmets it would be full face. If you're interested I can check when I get home if it's still there, I was cleaning out my garage and got rid of a bunch of stuff. If it's there and you want it, free.

If you want one for track days go for a Snell SA rated helmet, unless things have changed since I researched them they'll all be closed face. SA means it's meant for use in cars at speed (multiple impacts during a roll), M is for motorcycles (single large impact during a crash) and there's one for karting too that I can't remember.

Biggest chain store for motorcycle stuff in america. I bought all my gear from these guys and their prices are quite amazing compared to canada.
You can also buy online and save a bundle.
For example, my shoei helm would cost about 900 dollars cad here, i got for 500 cad down in portland.

helms also have an expiration of 7 years MAX. If you wear an expired helm, its almost as good as not having one.
"The five-year replacement recommendation is based on a consensus by both helmet manufacturers and the Snell Foundation. Glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production can affect liner materials. Hair oils, body fluids and cosmetics, as well as normal "wear and tear" all contribute to helmet degradation. Petroleum based products present in cleaners, paints, fuels and other commonly encountered materials may also degrade materials used in many helmets possibly degrading performance. Additionally, experience indicates there will be a noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets over a five-year period due to advances in materials, designs, production methods and the standards. Thus, the recommendation for five-year helmet replacement is a judgment call stemming from a prudent safety philosophy." http://www.smf.org/helmetfaq#aWhyReplace

I did a bit more research, and I think I would need a SA helmet for what I want to do.
