Burnaby RCMP were called to Crystal Mall at 12:30 p.m. Saturday after a woman, 43, reported that a couple had poured hot soup on her while she ate in the food court.
Witnesses told police the confrontation followed an argument between the two seniors and the woman. Police say the parties did not know each other.
The couple was handcuffed and escorted to a police vehicle outside Crystal Mall without incident.
“A Mandarin-speaking officer spoke with the two seniors to ensure they understood their legal rights. They were then released on a promise to appear so that the matter may be dealt with by the courts,” the RCMP said in a news release.
Police say the soup assault did not result in any life-altering injuries.

https://info.vanpeople.com/m/article.php?itemid=962487
For anyone interested. The story is discussed on the van people website. The old couple even replied what happened. They said the two lady was taking up a table of 4, and they refused to split the other two spot with the old couple, (for people who go to crystal mall a lot, this is a common practice on Saturday due to the lack of seat). So they threw soup on them to teach them a lesson
If anyone can read Chinese, would you be able to verify? LOL

i read the vanpeople chinese portion.
Someone who claims to be the 84 yr old couple' wrote the story:
*he states he is safe now, cops took him away in handcuff cause they didn't want to argue at the food court.
Older couple were waiting for a table; table had 4 seats, and 2 ladies were taking up 3 seats. While they were almost finished, the elder sat down at one of the empty seat patiently hoping to wait for them to finish up. Under no pressure whatsoever, he waited patiently as it's the ladies rights to occupy the table. There was a cell phone and purse occupying the 3rd seat, that's why the elder lady (while elder husband sat) was standing there waiting. After a while, husband said "could you put your phone away" *hinting to free up the seat so the elder lady can seat; the younger ladies didn't react and ignored the request.
The 2 ladies gave them a weird look and ignored them for a bit and then just when they stood up and leave; the elder man was mad (tries to justify his actions by saying would you do this to your own grandparents etc..) and threw soup at the younger lady.

Before the deets came out, I just knew it was about a table if incident happened at Crystal Mall.
The 2 younger ladies should travel to HK and see what their Western values of not sharing tables get them there! Lot more than soup thrown at them.
Always share tables with the elderly .. they smell great and have some awesome stories.

This got me curious as to what's so delicious at crystal mall to warrant that many people being in the food court.
I can't for the life of me recall anything remotely good in that food court. Then again besides cell phone crap and cheap computer parts back in the early 2000s there wasn't anything worthwhile in the entire mall.

lol THA'S why I always have my food take out when I order at crystal mall food court. The food there is actually not bad and cheaper compare to Metrotown.

Everyone involved is stupid. Their old asses should know better then throwing hot soup at people and the other two can learn to share a table. Ffs

I read the excerpts in the Vanpeople site-link.
There's something mentioned about the young girl getting-up with an annoyed face, and dumping the remainder of HER soup INTO the bowl of the elderly couples'.
And what ensued was the elderly couple returning the younger girl's favour by splashing it back at her.

Stupid to pour the soup on them but what kind of fucktards won't share a table when it's busy?

The soup assault was definitely over the top (especially here in Canada) but the unwillingness to share the table is a bit of a cultural phenomenon that hasn't really sorted itself out here. In my travels to Asia, it was very normal to share tables/seats with strangers. Here - not so much. It just depends.
Crystal Mall is neither here nor there.

Lot's of people actually. I used eat there and you woulnd't believe the number of people taking 4 seats table for only 2 people and saying no when you ask to share. Mostly girls say no though the guys don't really care when I ask.

Remind me not to throw soup at you. :troll:
In all seriousness, table sharing is a bit of a coin toss based on personal experiences in Canada. You got to Costco and want to grab a hot dog and share a table with someone, they will either say yes, or no, or tell you the seat is saved for someone. Whether legitimate or not, we don't know. And then you go to some place like Crystal Mall, located in a metropolitan Canadian city, but the place feels like Asia in a way. And then you have overly entitled turds who won't share a table, and get soup dumped on them. So confusing, lah!~ :fulloffuck:

I've had people sitting down at my table at Crystal Mall without asking. Sometimes it is just me sitting at a table of 2 or 4. One time it was me and the wifey sitting at a table of 4. Of course I am not surprised, but I'd at least think that the person / party should ask first out of common courtesy.
From my own experience, I'd say the asking / not asking ratio at Crystal Mall is more like 50-50. Other Chinese places like Aberdeen Center and Parker Place food courts don't really have that kind of sitting-down-without-asking type of thing though. From my experience, it has only happened at Crystal Mall food court.

It also must be a cultural thing to call the police.
Try that at Guildford and the last thing you're going to hear before getting your head smashed in is "Worldstar!"
Then this.....

Lol whut? Western values?? Dude have you ever stepped foot in a Costco? People of all creed be knockin’ Polish weiners together happily sharing tables. I remember going to the old Richmond centre or Landsdowne mall to buy Pokémon cards and waste time in toys-r-us, no one has ever put up a stink sharing a table

Soup assaults in addition to the terrible parkade design at Crystal mall. Spiral of death for the fools who choose to park their vehicles in that awful parkade. :lawl:
Take transit or park your ride on the street if you visit Crystal Mall, Aberdeen or any Chinese mall to avoid grief from the awful drivers in those sorry ass parkades. This food court assault is the just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to bad things at this mall.
How is this even news?
Would probably get more coverage if the old couple were white :troll:

I remember sharing tables in Metrotown decades ago when it'd get really busy, was quite common back then (before they made the new food court)
Both were stupid
Hot soup/water can really burn, remember my ex spilled hot water accidentally on my clothed arm and I still got a boil from it

i've only seen it happen in food courts here
in malyasia or hong kong it happens in restaurants
i'm sure if our density increased another 3 folds it'd become the norm here too

Ya, this. Like Quasi, I'll call myself for what I am - a 100% honkey :) And I say score 1 for the old guy! Ok, I dont condone pouring hot soup on someone, that's dangerous, but go to any Costco on a weekend and people of all races are happily sharing tables. Go to the PNE or a hockey game, or the Stampede, or a Jay's game and people are happily sharing tables. THAT'S the western values I was raised with while eating in a public place.. if it's busy, you scoot over and make room.
The women acted souper bad and refused to share a table, then literally got "served". Sorry, I couldn't resist.
I will say though, this is funny and reminds me of the punch out in the dim sum restaurant parking lot. Xiao long bao is obv worth dying over :)

As a shanghainese man I must agree that Xiao Long Bao is worth dying for hahahha. Especially if they taste like home. Ding Tai Fong where the fuck are you in Vancouver ?!?
P.s. a pretty decent XLB place that has a good taste of home is actually that Shanghai place in the Aberdeen food court. Also tried their pan fried pork buns, taste just like home.

Not shangahi-nese, but I found DTF quality of food pretty mediocre for the price point (convert to CAD). What do you think about Top Shanghai Cuisine in the Ackroyd plaza?

It's okay, the chef ain't shanghainese. Best shanghainese place by far is on Kingsway. Owned and operated by a shanghainese couple same age as my parents. The husband is the head chef and he worked in a few famous restaurants back home.
His flavors are very much what we eat back home and prices are reasonable. Try their pan fried eel and xlbs. Delicious.
