Rude? Pot, kettle.

Anyone with experience dealing with the public knows this is just a reality. Thankfully, people now don’t always get away with it, as a result of a video camera in every pocket, and social media. Unfortunately, the response to that can ruin lives in a way that is disproportionate to the incident.

It IS kind of rude to speak in another language when there are multiple people present though ... I try really hard to always speak whichever language is most inclusive or I feel everyone would feel most comfortable in. But it's great when you're out and you are talking haggling techniques FeelsGoodMan

On the flip side, it's also really funny when I try to speak chinese to the FOBs but they insist on speaking in broken English instead. I commend them for trying/learning!

Just a hunch, but I'd guess these employees would have felt much better about the situation had somebody with an ounce of courage stepped up at the moment, rather than "put her on blast" from the security and anonymity of their desktop.

I think some of you May be missing what's going on here, there was an incident that we don't see, and the white lady is now pissed off, and is complaining to the manager(?) She wants to speak to the store manager, and to call corporate, to lodge a complaint, while she's pissed, the employees start talking in Chinese in front of her (probably calling her a bitch /nut job) and so that ticks her off even more, so she calls em out

Her fuck up is she goes racist by saying "this is Canada speak English" if she had phrased that differently, she could've gotten her point across, and ppl wouldn't have called her racist

She'd still be a cunt for her entitled/demanding aggressive tone. It's a simple matter of treating people with respect.

Seriously think school curriculums need to have a year where students work in customer service jobs. Then more people would understand both sides of the coin and society would be so much better.

This shit gets me so worked up /rant

I think this really boils down to consistency in customer service, and the decency to provide service to customers in a language that is mutually understood by all. While this is a personal opinion, I do not feel that it was the right for the two staff to speak in their native tongue (I didn't listen, so I don't know) which sparks further outrage and frustration with the customer (said racist woman.) The lady who called the two staffers out clearly overreacted, and I would like to believe she regrets what she said, and her actions were certainly uncalled for. A shitty situation for all.

Ding
10-29-2019, 06:36 PM
Have people tried learning another language as an adult? It was probably instinct for the cashier to speak in her native tongue to properly explain the situation to her coworker. Vancouver is super multicultural, people should expect that not everybody is going to be comfortable speaking English.

If this thread was made 10 years ago every post would be how it's Canada and they need to speak English working in customer service in canada. Based on the comments from people in Vancouver about this video I bet in 10 years everyone will be saying the customer is wrong for expecting customer service to speak english for them.

By then everything will be done online or through kiosks

I don't know what it's like in Canada, but in Hong Kong all the grocery stores have self checkout, nearly all drug stores (equivalent to London Drugs or Shoppers Drug Mart) have self checkout... All fast food chains do as well. If you were to just stick to shopping at these places - and theoretically you could, because they cover all the basic essentials - you really don't need to interact with anyone.

I disagree. I think it's totally fine when if someone thinks you need to know what they're saying, they'll speak your language if they can. Otherwise, speak whatever they're most comfortable with.

i'm not expecting tim hortons/shoppers etc as places to find the best customer service but the staff should say 'if it's okay i wish to discuss this with my colleague in another language'...seems like a courteous thing to do in a professional setting when you have a patron/client involved in a discussion trying to resolve an issue...but then again maybe before the video was rolling she was already being a massive cunt so in that case maybe i wouldn't gaf either

I’d like to know what happened before the video started... not that it excuses her level of aggression.

That said she didn’t say any racist names... so I’m not wholly comfortable attacking this from a “racist” angle, more like a rude or bitch level of 10... she ain’t smart to do this in a store and she obviously isn’t a good person but....... kinda stretching the boundaries a little on the whole nazi racist thing? Especially without knowing the full story (not that I believe it would help her case much).

I dunno maybe I’m just tired of online lynching in general tho... could be that apathy at play in my mind too.

Self check sucks here. For example they expect you to use the store provided bags. If you put your own reuseable bag on the check out side it will keep giving you an error (coz of the weight difference). Also after you scan an item if you just opt to put it in your backpack or bag it will give you an error, you have to place your scan item on the check out side. Also if an item is marked as clearance with a special discount most of the time the self check won't know it and will just scan the regular price. Have that happen several times at Wal Mart and we either have to go to customer service to do the adjustment and issue a refund or get the customer service agent there to manually change the price.

Self check in Wal Mart at least allow you to press the skip bagging option so you can just put your stuff directly into your bag, London drugs have no such options. Then you have people who have no idea how to use the self serve check out station and is just taking up everyone's time (IE superstore there is always someone who take ages at the self check out either coz they don't know how to use it or is buying 50 items at once and the rep there doesn't stop it coz clearly the sign said 12 item or less)

I love the "ruin her life already and move on" quote... lol... goes to show the prevailing attitude in people today.

Don't gather evidence, don't give anyone a fair trial, just assume whatever you saw is legit... judge, jury and executioner.

This is a general statement, not necessarily about this particular video... also to act like it's nothing to "ruin someone's life" as if that's a fair trade or retribution for whatever happened. Should she be made to go to anger management classes? Write an apology letter to the employees? Banned from the store forever? Sure... but ruin someone's life cuz they yelled at someone? Yah okay, you're a great person too aren't you? MUCH better than that lady.

Well what do u think happened? I dont see any plausible scenario where those employees deserved that type of treatment. Its 2019, seems like the norm for you to be fired from your job if you go on a racist tirade and get caught on camera that's basically viral on social media. Innocent till proven guilty? Well theres a video viewed by millions that see her completely in the wrong, so maybe it's time for her to come out and tell her side and explain why she said those things.

68style

So it's the norm, do you think that makes it right? Do you ever think for yourself? Or just a sheep?

You live every day of your life like a saint and never lose your shit over anything? I don't think so. Everyone does things they regret in retrospect.

Also, please elaborate on how this was a racist tirade? The closest thing to racism I heard her say was that it's Canada and people should speak English, which is super judgy and rude at worst. I didn't hear a single racist epitaph used.

It's rude and disrespectful and condescending... but racist tirade? Please.

I once saw some asshole speeding at 80km/h in a parkade and when I confronted him he said "I'm from China and I'm rich, I can do anything I want so fuck you" and I responded saying "If China is so great, why don't you go back to there? You're just some piece of shit endangering people's lives here asshole" ... am I racist? Or did I just respond to his bullshit justification in kind? If someone recorded me saying that to him but only the second half of the "conversation", then I'd have been all over social media too looking like a total racist right?

CBC radio had some interesting takes:

- A caller named Tyler, unironically near as I could tell, put forth the concept of a Chinese style social credit system in order to punish people for bad behaviour. :rukidding:

- Another caller didn't like how the video was posted to social media without the consent of those involved: the child, the employees, the woman, etc. While filming in public does not require consent, did anyone in the video really want the video posted or the inevitable backlash for the woman to occur?

This cunt has a meltdown over people not speaking her tongue? Look at the lady cashier's face, does it look like she started the shit? Looks pretty black and white to me. If this brat got any backlash, it's all well-deserved.

"Go back to your country", "go somewhere else" is an ignorant thing to even utter in this day and age. Does it make you racist? Maybe, maybe not. But it's the preferred choice of words for racist people. Just say "fuck you, too" or "eat a dick". :lol

Even if she told her side, her life is already ruined. Media takes victims' side because it sells better. They don't care about the perceived libel or slander.

Look into to accused and false rape allegations, murder allegations, etc. People's lives get ruined over viral posts.

In response to 68style

When you work for a company and acts like that and it gets caught on video. Of course there gonna fire you. It's just bad business if you dont. It's the way it is nowadays.

I never said I was a saint or i do anything wrong. I lose my shit all the time but I dont take it out on anyone else. But I'm not the one on "trial" here, she is.

Imo, it becomes racists when you say "speak english in canada" when the lady clearly can speak English. Maybe not the best english but enough to be working a cashier job at Shoppers where she has to speak english to hundreds of people daily.

Maaaaan, don't people realize they are always going to be filmed when they're yelling in a store? Why double down and complain that there is a language barrier. Learn the fucking language then . And with your son standing right there? Jesus, that's the worst part of it all.

Canada has been a melting pot for decades. Even when I was in elementary school there were different languages spoken depending on where in Vancouver/Richmond you went.

People shaming people for speaking any language in any country in 2019 is just ridiculous.

I just hate this push for revenge all the time, people think they're being progressive but actually it's a stupid caveman mentality for a society to practice and engage in vigilante behaviour.

Her point was that some bystander with a camera shouldn't be the one deciding how an incident is handled. The person(s) on the receiving end should have a say in how things proceed. What if all they wanted was a simple apology rather than seeing this woman publicly shamed, potentially fired from her job, her children bullied, and family harrassed until the mob finds another target?

What happened to the concept of turning the other cheek, or being the better person? Sure there is a discussion to be had over racism and how people treat each other. Cancel culture doesn't drive those conversations or provide real opportunities to learn and improve. If anything, its more likely to marginalize and push people down the rabbit hole to more extreme views.

So yesterday I was at Lansdowne and a store was giving out really good candies for the kids and had a huge lineup... this middle eastern lady just waltzes past the entire line with her kids up to the front to get candy and a guy in the lineup called her out, she went totally berzerk and screamed and swore (in front of her kids and everyone else's kids!) at the guy who called her out, then she went into the store and screamed at the employee "Are you not going to give me the candies if I don't line up????" and then the guy in the store said no, he won't give her any candy if she doesn't line up and she she came out of the store again and said "I am not going to line up for these fucking candies! I am going to call the police if you don't give me the candy it says you have candy and you don't give it to me you are being prejudiced!!!!"

She then went on to continue swearing and yelling at the employee in the store, calling him all sorts of names and saying derogatory things about being an employee in a mall store... several people had their phones out and were recording her while this went on.

Somehow it didn't end up on social media? Funny that. I guess it's only cool to hate when white people go crazy lol

It's pretty simple really.

1) I'm of an age where my first thought isn't to pull my phone out and record everything. It's in my pocket, not out in my hand constantly like a lot of people.

2) I feel no need to record other people's actions and I would have nothing to do with said footage as I don't believe in outing people/ruining someone's life for likes and personal fame and I definitely don't believe in online shaming of individuals. I have no social media to post to, I have no IG, no Snapchat... I have no desire to be YouTube famous or sell clips to the media... call me a relic if you want but that's up to you. Why do I need to record the interaction?

3) Out of the, oh I don't know, 50-60 people in the lineup... approximately 3 people had their phones out to record it. That's a pretty low percentage and appears I'm in the majority that chooses not to participate in such actions.

Then again, I went to Auschwitz in Poland once for a tour and never dared to even take a single photo or video out of respect for all the human suffering, perhaps I feel the same way when I see someone having a mental breakdown in front of me? Lots of other tourists seemed to enjoy making videos of the gas chambers and talking loudly despite the signs calling for silence and respect.

But you sure like to tell the stores on RS. How good really where those candies?

You must be one of those people that goes to concerts, hockey games etc that always whips out their phone to record every little mildly entertaining aspect of their lives instead of viewing it in the moment? Out of all the cool shit I did in my life never once did I wish I had it saved on some little electronic device.

The last time I went to a hockey game it was to watch my nephew play and the camera on my phone not that great. I just find it funny he has all these stories about crazy things happening but never seems to record them.

Full size chocolate bars, not mini ones!

I said 2 crazy events that happened around me in this thread... 1 last night... and 1 was almost 2 years ago in Aberdeen parkade.

I don't think that's an unreasonable number of things to occur to one person who goes out pretty much every day and commutes back and forth on the Canada Line to downtown while living in a BIG city like Richmond :)

You need to whip that camera out so you can make that youtube money.

I really wish someone would post their video of that, because it sounds like something someone would make up or at least embellish quite a bit LUL

(not saying you're doing that, just saying it sounds so ridiculous I can hardly imagine it)

(PS if you really want to see non white people freaking out, go to reddit publicfreakout, there's tons of them there. The "white people are being singled out/picked on" thing is only in your head)

(PSS I think white people do make the best public freakout videos though. So most of the top posts will be white people LUL )

I’ll admit to trolling a little bit on the last part of my post.
