Before a mod wannabe chimes in with a useless comment, I believe this thread will give another angle to this pandemic that has turned this world upside down.

Also, please refrain from telling us about how you lost your income. That can be posted in one of the other 6 threads on the subject............ nuff said.

A list of closures - be it limited or outright permanent. It could be minor. Whatever affects you. It could also be positive.

==================================

I just found out that Record Store Day that was slated for April 16th has been moved to some later date in July. Most likely not happening, either. I was so looking forward to this day. Oh wells.........

Mission Raceway has for obvious reasons, cancelled today's Street Legal, Test and Tune, and tomorrow's T&T/Gambler's Race. Probably all future events for quite some time. Everything until end of April is cancelled. May races are still a go, but it'll most likely not happen. https://missionraceway.com/events/

Good news for golfers. The courses are open. At first, I was like, WTF? But, when you think about it, social distancing is totally possible. Plus, the type of people who are on the links are pretty responsible.

There's talk that the postponed date for the Tokyo Olympics might not be good enough. https://nationalpost.com/pmn/health-pmn/olympics-tokyo-2020-working-towards-new-date-but-virus-clouds-future

And, the border closures are so sad........... no more Trader Joe's trips. Gulololol.

And, the border closures are so sad........... no more Trader Joe's trips. Gulololol.

This impacts me more than most would think. I do a Trader Joe's run twice or thrice a year for pantry items, and now that I am out of Trader Joe's goodies, I've had to resort to Whole Foods and Farm Boy for the equivalent. :heckno: #FWP

Regarding track days, I had my Boxster prepped for the upcoming HPDE day with the local PCA at Mosport, only to find out 12 hours later track season is pretty much cancelled until July, if not, longer.

No cheap car parts - no car parts, actually there's a shortage

no ridge track days.

Not officially announced yet, but most likely the PNE will be shut down. Sorry, son, no trip with the old man this year (again). https://www.pne.ca

Just found out that Neptoon Records is holding the event, where you can have your order delivered or dropped off within a specified area on Main Street. https://recordstoreday.com/Store/4130

I imagine other stores will be doing the same.

I stocked up on Trader Joe's freeze dried strawberries. Have about five bags left. Expiry dates in 2021. I found some up here, but they are from china........... ewwwwww..... um, no thanks.

My sugar free creamers that are only available in the US (Fred Meyers, Winco, Walmart)........ I have three bottles left. Will last for two months. Need to cut back and only use it every once in awhile.

And, laundromats on both sides of the border. I will feel so dirty. Withdrawl syndrome - the shakes, lol. I play on-line games, but not the same. How is BCLC going to fund all the various charities?

The rally events I've seen have been cancelled or postponed. e-racing is filling the gap somewhat, lots of drivers are organizing their own events or mini championships on various platforms. I was about to swap my car back to the street setup before I realized there's no point as I'm not driving it anywhere anyways.

I was starting to get motivated to finish my CRX and get it ready for this year's track and autoX season but now it is on hold.
I did start the car last week, so the motor still turns over which is good.

My follow up with the doctor is put on hold. Still have a 5mm kidney stone and was suppose to go back to the clinic/hospital to see how to remove it. Now is put on hold and not sure when I will get an apt. I am pretty sure there is a ton of people in front on me. I just hope this kidney stone won't turn to a giant one that I had a surgery to take it out (it was at 3cm)

Our daycare is basically closed to all except those who are essential workers.

Positive - we are saving over $2000/month and we're spending 'quality' time with the kids. My youngest who not yet 3 has learned the alphabet. My goal with the other kid is to teach her how to read basic words before she starts Kindergarten.

Negative - I wouldn't recommend working from home if you have young kids.

Having to postpone work on my car due to astronomical shipping costs from the US to Canada through RockAuto if I were to ship it here ($350-$400 shipping before potential duties).

I used to do Blaine runs at least once a week, ship a bunch of stuff to Blaine. A lot less selection for some stuff on Amazon CA vs US too, and stuff tends to be astronomically more costly for certain things I was looking to buy if I were to buy in Canada.

MG1
04-11-2020, 01:43 PM
Not sure if it is still possible, but 24/7 Parcel had a mail forwarding service. Didn't sound that expensive, as long as the items were not heavy.

Might be cheaper to get stuff through Lordco, West Can, Burnaby Auto Parts, etc. At least you'll be supporting local businesses, which are hurting right now. Never thought I'd say this, but going south of the border doesn't seem that appealing........................ who am I kidding, LOL.

I've never ever ever ever found anything to be cheaper through any local auto stores, for any part for any of the last 2 cars I've owned and the 2 I currently own.

My BMW needs four pads and rotors. If I were to buy the exact same parts or equivalent in Canada, it's a smidge more than double if I were to order from RockAuto, shipping costs and exchange rate included. Car parts are just so significantly cheaper in the US than they are in Canada. Everything here is at least 50% more.

Not that many parts, but I have purchased parts for cheaper. Good guy prices. Wholesale prices. Level 7 prices from Lordco.............. educational prices if you know someone in that segment.

My son ordered some gaming shit from the states. It was a preorder. He asked me for details to my 24/7 Parcel account. It was all paid for and shipping address was confirmed. The bloody thing is now shipping. I told my son of this a few weeks ago and he tried to put a stop on it. Shipper from this company tells my son not to worry. "We understand the situation most of our Canadian customers are in. We will redirect the items to a Canadian address for no charge." Like, wow............ really nice of them.

They are not allowed to be opened yet because of what they do. it might be hazardous since most of the things will be airborne for a while. Even in emergency they are to be wearing n95 mask and protective gear in order to work on your teeth. Other than that, try not to break any teeth lol

MG1
04-11-2020, 08:05 PM
I got a call from the receptionist at my dental clinic two weeks ago that I'm due for a teeth cleaning and that I should make an appointment. I should have done it right there and then. Frick. Maybe they have special way of doing stuff. Anyway, going to call them on Tuesday with fingers crossed.

If it's non essential, they won't do it. In emergencies like decay is down to the pulp, they will accommodate.

Maybe they're not busy at all and can get me in. Spend the next 6 hours disinfecting the equipment after they're done with their favourite customer.

Totally agree. Families back together again. If anything, that is one of the biggest positives that has come from this disaster.

Parents being able to discuss the situation with their children. Coming up with plans to deal with it, etc. Lots of teachable moments.......... like media awareness. Separating fact from sensationalism. How other countries and governments have dealt with it. Calming them down and giving them hope.

I think you're right and the more I think about it I highly doubt we'll see professional sports again in 2020.

It won't make sense, they can't fill the stadiums and even having players have contact with each other all it takes is one player to get it and the league is shut down again. Until there is a vaccine we're pretty much fucked, you'll see some sort of normal before than but not to the same extent as before the virus.

I went to Wellwise yesterday and picked up one of these.

https://www.3blumin.com

I don't even have a CPAP, lol. I got it so I can zap any germs off my phone, keys, toothbrush, masks, watch, jewelry, etc. I use my P-100 mask a lot and I feel wiping it down with disinfectant wipes and Q-Tips ain't doing a good enough job. I rotate through three masks at the moment, so zapping them with UV light and putting them in a large Ziploc freezer bag for storage would be a good plan...........

Oh, I had close to 100,000 Optimum points, so I used them. Only had to pay about 4 bucks. This is what saving all those points are all about (20X points events, shopping at Loblaws stores, etc.). Plus, PC World Elite Mastercard helps.

From the Optimum emails I get once in a while.........

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to so many of you who’ve taken the time to e-mail me and let me know how things are going in your local store. I continue to hear lots of great stories, but also some really helpful feedback on where things might not be operating as they should. We’re following up with each of our stores to fix what’s not working. We’re also looking for new ways to simplify and improve the shopping experience, often based on your suggestions.

Among that feedback, one thing we’ve heard time and again is an appreciation for dedicated seniors’ hours. And many of you are wondering if we could offer something similar for healthcare workers.

That’s why I’m happy to share that we’re now providing priority access for healthcare workers in almost all of our locations throughout the day. By showing their healthcare ID, these essential frontline employees will get priority entrance to our supermarkets and drugstores.

We owe it to all Canadians to make things better, not harder. But that is especially true of our healthcare workers who are under incredible strain. They spend long and stressful shifts supporting directly impacted individuals, and often don’t know when exactly they will be working from week to week. This uncertainty makes shopping for their own essentials very hard.

If you’re a healthcare worker, we hope this helps. For everyone else, please join us in recognizing these remarkable individuals by being patient while we get them into the store as quickly as we can.

And keep the e-mails coming. Your messages let us know what we are doing right and challenge us to be better where we need to be.

Be kind,

Galen Weston

I've been getting my Japan Crate boxes in a timely manner. This month, I received an email saying April's boxes have been returned to their warehouse because Japan Post is no longer delivering. As an alternative, for 5 bucks US, they can ship it via another method. I opted for holding the crates until Japan Post is back up and running. Fast forward to today. Their May box is being shipped now, because Japan Post is up and running again. Not sure what the deal was with Japan Post, but glad things are back to normal. I subscribed to a full year of their premium boxes in November of last year. Anyway................

Domestic violence cases have gone up. I guess being cooped up 24/7 isn't making things better for some.

Small grocery stores (not all) are seeing a huge increase in business. Nobody likes long lineups, so they go to the grocery store in their neighbourhood to get small stuff. I was at Wholesale Club and this one lady was loading up her huge ass SUV with what seemed like pallets of candy and drinks (pop, energy drinks, etc.). I asked her why so much and she said, I come everyday to get more. She looked run down. I was like really? Maybe she owns a chain of small convenience stores. Lots of friends?

Safeway is selling 80% alcohol sanitizers like nobody's business. The one's from that brewery by SFU Surrey. Spray bottles are in short supply. Ask me. I just purchased said bottle, but can't get mini spray bottles. Closest ones I could find were at Canadian Tire. Too big, but better than nothing.

Someone mentioned there would be lots of babies come January, but me thinks the opposite. Why would you bring a child into this kind of situation. If anything, condom sales??? On the other hand, if you were single, use of condoms might.............. nvm.

Because of this pandemic, I am ordering take out food more often, to support local restaurants. No delivery, because they cut so much into the restaurants' profits.

Yesterday, I got some Aloo Tiki and Veggie Pakora at this sweet shop in PoCo. Place was called, Bombay. Really surprised at the prices and quality of food.

Today, I got a suggestion from Groupon for this place called, "Win Win Chick-N." Holy cow, it was actually pretty good. What really hit the spot was their Fillipino style, Macaroni. The chicken is not under heat lamps. It's made when you order. They have two locations. The original in Steveston Village, which doesn't seem to be open, and the newest location, the one I went to today, on Main Street at Marine. They're having a soft opening, ATM. Free parking out back. I called in the groupon order and they told me they'll call when it's ready. I charged the EV at the Superstore one block away and waited. It was worth every penny.

Tomorrow, I'm going into the garden to cut me some freshly grown green onions. Going to make some Perogies and have it with sour cream and bacon bits - lots of it. Wash it down with a White Russian or maybe some Bailley's and cheap coffee, lol. I'm getting into liqueurs. Orange flavoured, Cointreau, my next purchase..........

This pandemic is going to kill me. My taste buds are doing just fine.

Got a whole list of things to get from Trader Joes, Costco, Harbor Freight, Fred Meyers.......... stay at least 48 hours, so I can bring back a shitload of duty free goodies and alcohol, of course. Most likely stay at some Casino/Hotel. I just wish the exchange rate was a little better. Maybe in 8 months when the borders open up, the Loonie would be a little higher.

The only problem is the quarantine period. Once you cross, they want you to quarantine for 14 days, then when you come back.. another 14... wtf .... i'm going ot be pissed cause vacation time will be all sitting at the air bnb.

You're also right, the exchange rate tanked so much and gas being not so attractive... I can't see myself going anytime soon. I used to buy beef + dairy (cheeze + milk + eggs) but I gotta do the math now to see if it's worth it.

Because of Covid, I’ve been forced to do research on making my own hand sanitizer. Never knew about the various uses for Hydrogen Peroxide, Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol, and Tea Tree Oil. I just picked up a bottle of Tea Tree Oil at London Drugs.

Hydrogen Peroxide to disinfect my reusable drink bottles. It really works! No more Fresca smell, which was really hard to get rid of. Vinegar, baking soda, and Polident tablets. So cool. Together with the UV sanitizer, I’m clean as a whistle. At least my stuff is.

After everyone says their no’s, dog is under the end of the table saying, “yes........” as the huge piece of wonton miraculously falls right into his mouth. Gulolol.

Back to Costco hours. Seniors hour is 8:00 to 9:00 am. Best time to go for Seniors is between 8:15 - 8:30. By 8:15, everybody is in and there’s little to no line up. Seniors are fucking slow. They take their time, so getting there at 8:30ish is perfect. No line up to pay. Oh, on Saturdays and Sundays, regular folk can get in at that time. When I got to Costco Willingdon today at 8:20, a young couple went right in. I was like, okay door guy, I know chick was kind of hot, but what gives? Dude’s like yeah, we let everybody in on weekends. Don’t spread the word too much or they may be forced to go back to separate lines again.

Buddy and I was making a left turn in a left turn lane and this guy starting just ripping his horn for no reason. Cars just finished crossing the intersection, so buddy was creeping out cause the other side had left turners too (blocking clear vision), and the guy behind us starts ripping his horn. Whatever, we drive off a few blocks and the guy pulls up on us. Starts yelling and swearing at us, we give him the fuck off's and he starts spitting the asian diseased comments.. shit got real quick lol.

My buddy is about to get out the car and the trash drives off! Probably shouldn't have but we turned to tail him for couple blocks. The guy got scared, so he started ripping it turning corners and shit to try lose us. We let him go after.. but seriously what a fck twat.. shouldn't be pulling up on people if you aint gonna throw hands.

Well, went to get some mini donuts at the PNE today. Yeah, if you're not the patient type, you may not want to go. If you're used to ferry lineups, then this might be alright. Didn't really check to see how long, but maybe an hour? Just like ferry lineups. About six or seven lanes wide. I went at around 2:30. It was the first day, so I'm sure it'll be smoother tomorrow and Sunday.

As for the donuts, typical fair food. I can say I got mini donuts at the PNE, lol.

I think they were hoping for people to decorate their cars and make it a party atmosphere, but it didn't happen. It was totally safe. Nobody got close to you. Tickets/phones were scanned. You receive a colour coded slip of paper you flash at the vendors. They place your bag(s) on a serving tray and hand it towards you. You grab it and wave goodbye.

I supported local businesses, got my yearly quota of mini donuts, went to the PNE, saw the show home from the lane, and it was all pretty much painless.

EDIT: Just checked the dashcam footage. Just under an hour. After going to Kent's Kitchen in Chinatown, I took Hastings back to Burnaby. When I went past the PNE, there was no line up at the entrance. This was at 4:00 pm. I'm going again today. This time, not at 2 or 3 pm, lol. Getting enough PNE tickets for the family. The donuts are awesome cold, btw. Breakfast of champions, man - not!

EDIT 2.0 (Saturday morning):

I thought I'd be smarter and go at 12:30. I misjudged traffic a bit (went to Trout Lake Farmers Market, No Frills Broadway, Costco Downtown, and Kent's Kitchen). I had two of my sons with me, so they wanted to do our regular weekly shopping. Anyway, all those places were no lineups, in and out type of ordeal. I arrived at the PNE at 12:00 noon. 6 cars were already in the driveway and gates were closed. I didn't want to block the driveway, so I came around to wait on Hastings Street. I lost a grand total of two parking spots just going around one block. Not bad, right? Five minutes later, more cars line up behind me. They opened the gates at 12:30. I got the donuts at around 12:50. Went around to head back home. OMFG! The line up on Hastings was past Cassiar. WTH? Like, WTH? Two to three hours worth, is my guess. I made the right choice. I don't know, man. I guess you paid for it, so might as well stay in the lineup. I can see someone suggesting getting some traffic control set up for Sunday. Have people wait in line at the side streets and have a cop stopping people from getting into the lineup at Hastings Street - have them go around at Renfrew. Bus stop nearby was plugged up. I guess the organizers didn't see this coming? It's the first time they've done this sort of thing. Plus it's a weekend.

^Like my garden in spring................. everything looks dead after a cold winter, but from the ashes (snow in this case) comes new life.

Three or four years ago, one of my neighbours decided to prune the plants in the backyard. I never asked him to, but he felt I needed some help. My wife used to do the gardening, and I was pretty much useless around the garden back then. Well, one of my bushes that used to produce really good looking greens for use in flower arrangements for ceemetery visits. died from too much pruning. I was so mad at the guy, but let it go. After I told him he destroyed my daughter's vegetable garden, he figured out he had overstepped the boundaries of being a helpful neighbour. I think it was his wife that gave him supreme shit. Anyway, he's very old.

Well, long story short, the plant this year, came back. Wow!

After businesses go by way of the Dodo Bird, others will pop up to replace and fill the void. Hopefully nice one's and not weeds.

Update on donuts...........

https://bc.ctvnews.ca/overwhelming-demand-prompts-extension-of-pne-mini-doughnut-event-1.4952672

Extended to Monday because it was so successful.

I'm still trying to finish them. Will have to freeze them, lol. Even with the line up and all, it was a good experience. Bailey's Strawberry and Cream helps with eating of donuts. A bit of me dies each time I spell doughnuts the amurican way.

Just noticed, CTV News spelled it the Canadian way. Yay!

I started working full-time again in downtown after a 2.5 month hiatus. It's clear that there are way more crazies wandering the streets and the back alleys.

Is there a specific reason why? It can't just be me not noticing them before...
Dirty shirtless people yelling and screaming at Breka entrance. More empty bottle stealers, dumpster divers, etc.

My wife has been going back once or twice a week and homeless crazies just sitting in front of businesses trying to open then freak out/attacking people who try to tell them to leave

Downtown gonna be a mess for a while

Times are tough on everybody, especially for people worse off than most of us. There's little in the way of help. Volunteers are fewer in that area nowadays. Also, people are scared of these crazies and they know it. They can sense it.

Funny thing is, I never get harassed that much by the homeless. They probably sense that I used to be in their shoes at one point? It's hard to explain. The way one carries themselves when close to them matters, I guess. As an asian, it's not polite to look at someone in the eye. With homeless people you need to look them straight in the eyes and give a stern look without intimidating too much, then give them the head nod - "It's all cool," kind of thing.

Or, you look like Fliptuner and they know better than to mess with you.

Costco willingdon has been ok lately. I usually hit that place up on a weekday around 7pm. Line looks long but it's moving. Roughly 5-10mins wait.

Before work, I would have no time to exercise, now I have all the time in the world with nothing to do. So time to exercise.

Rule one, find purpose and do shit. You can't apply every day every hour. Get out of the house.
Rule 2, go exercise. You will start eating like a bum and just munch on shit all day long.

OMFG! Had a very productive morning. Went to Valley Bakery. They're celebrating Hats Off Day, without the street being shut down. A lot of the businesses along the strip are having specials. Valley had their cinnamon sticks on sale. Win!

I then went to Duffin's Donuts. Man, I had forgotten how good their donuts are. They just made the Angel Cream just before I got there. Eclairs, Apple Fritters, NICE!!!!! I also forgot they have that Fritou place next door. So much win.

I also went to Kim's Mart. Sakuraya upstairs. They had frozen, salted, pre-sliced sockeye salmon on sale. Limit of 5. I usually get sockeye salmon at wholesale prices, but this is salted already and sliced. I just finished cooking them. 15 minutes in room temperature water to thaw, line 'em up on a foil lined cookie sheet and broil till the skin is crispy (internal temp 160 minimum). So easy and so good. Even made some sushi rice. If I had more time, I would make some Okai or chagai (traditional rice porridge made with green tea.) Okai on cold rice and Shiomon. Comfort food. Will make any non asian turn Japanese, Gulolol.

Okay, I take some of what I said back. After having a few pieces of salted salmon, I realized the salted salmon was weak sauce. Next time, Imma gonna sprinkle some sea salt on the salmon before putting it in the oven. Also, found a few bones in the salmon. Not a couple, but a few. Just in one of the pieces. The really thin ones. You pay to have the salmon filleted and clear of any bones. anyway, it's cheap. I can live with a few bones here and there. The salmon didn't look like the sockeye from the Fraser. Most likely Alaskan. Can't tell unless whole fish was there. Anyway, still a good deal.

BTW, I'm watching Dumpsters, Dives, and Drive-Ins with Guy Fieri. I thought the shows were reruns, but it's recent. Social distancing and shit. Nice! These featured restaurants and cooks send the ingredients in to Guy where he follows the instructions given live by the chefs via video conferencing. It's quite good. Anyway............. Food Network, ftmfw!

I'm now craving Arancini because of this show. Damn. I wAnder if Cioffi's is open tomollow............. I like theirs more than Bosa.

Free parking at the hospital I work at is just a gong show especially with people no longer car pooling and we’re not allowed to park in patient parking, so the patient lots are sitting mostly empty and everyone is now coming in earlier and earlier to try to get a spot.

Staff parking was full when I got to work this morning ... 38 minutes before my shift started. I shouldn’t have to get to work an hour early to get a spot. It’s ridiculous.

How many of you guys were able to get their flights refunded back? I bought flights around December for May travel (to YYZ) and WestJet cancelled the flights due to Covid19. They issued a travel credit in April and stated original form of payment can be issued at a later date. Nothing has been advised since and I am considering to file a chargeback dispute on my creditcard since they are just holding our money.

No luck so far for me. I was going to Iceland in May and flight was cancelled so I requested a refund. Got a case number but after not hearing from them in over a month, I raised a chargeback dispute with my CC a week ago. After submitting evidence that a refund was offered, I still haven't heard back from the CC company either.

I also have $1000 worth of credits for other things, which are probably worth fuck all unless i get to travel and stay at the same exact places by next May.

I had 9 flights booked between Air Canada and Delta I was only able to get credits.

Even if shit gets a little better and borders open for next year it's going to be expensive AF to fly because they'll be less flight available so if I were to use my credits I'm sure I'll have to pay the same or more on top of what I already paid due to increases in fairs.

By default they were only offering a credit, but I was able to get my KLM/Air France flight to Europe scheduled for June fully refunded by calling in and requesting it.

I was able to get 4 of my tickets refunded back by Air Canada. Basically flight was cancel back in Feb (Flight was schedule for March) from Vancouver to Beijing and then back. Got an email form AC saying they cancel my flights due to schedule change. Called them and got 3 of the 4 flights refunded right away. One flight the lady on the phone said will take sometime because it was order through their old system. She give me a ref no and it around mid april I should see the refund.

Mid- April came and no refund for the last ticket. I called AC got through and the agent on the phone said I actually file a refund online and the ref number I got was useless. Not happy at all but I did what she suggested. I been also in contact with AC through email and online message TW/FB starting end of May because I still don't see the refund yet and all their response was I have to wait.

Finally around early June I got piss off with their answer and call my CC company and file a chargeback. The agent on the phone said she can't proceed with the chargeback without an invoice form AC saying they agree to the amount refunded and amount. I explain AC isn't going to provide me one since they ingoring me since April. She refuse to help so I ask to be transfer someone who can help. Got her sup on the phone and she was very understanding. We did a 3 way to AC (wait for almost 2 and half hour btw) got to an agent in AC explain everything. The AC agent said it will take at least another 2 to 3months for the refund to happen. He reasoning is that AC have lay off a lot of agents and so there is a lot of backlogs. I just lost it and start complaining that's no acceptable and told him if he isn't going to issue a refund today I am going to file a chargeback with my CC which I have their supervisor on the call with me now. Maybe that scare him coz he put us on hold and in a few mins I receive an email from AC with the refund invoice. He said everything is good and i should get the refund to my CC in a week.

I did get the refund back in about a week. Just make sure when you talk to your CC about a chargeback have everything with you (Emails, online message FB, TW etc etc and date and time you called). Don't let the CC company say no to a chargeback.

Is just unreasonable to wait for a credit for over 4 months and expect me to wait at least another 2 to 3 months when they could have refunded in a few days. I will try to avoid flying with AC from now on even if it means using Air China (even though I hate the people who fly with Air China).

We got lucky with Singapore Airlines. YVR/TPE/SIN. Was to be flying in late March with the family. By january, We were going to eat the cancellation fees as we didn't think it was safe to travel anymore.

We held off cancelling til late Feb, and one of our connecting flights got cancelled before we were going to cancel, which triggered no charge rebook/refund.

Full refund. This was about a week before the airlines started cancelling everything everywhere, so I think it was just fortuitous timing.

Most gift cards are not allowed to expire in B.C.

https://www.consumerprotectionbc.ca/consumer-help/consumer-information-gift-cards/#Can%20my%20gift%20card%20expire

Did you know that most gift cards are not allowed to expire or have fees? BC’s gift card law speaks to expiry dates, when fees can be charged, and what information must be disclosed to you.

The law uses the term “prepaid purchase card” and defines it as “a card, written certificate or other voucher or device with a monetary value that is issued or sold to a person in exchange for the future supply of goods or services to a consumer, and includes a gift card and gift certificate”. This means that vouchers and credits apply.

Yeah if by January they're still quarantining travellers for 2 weeks or worse if no vaccine is on the horizon I'll probably have to do this. Most of these places are owner-operated small hotels that might not be in business if things don't look up soon.

I'm not booking anything months in advance again for the foreseeable future, not going to get burned again. Sucks for me though as planning a trip was almost as fun as going on one.

I should have clarified. That only applies for purchased gift cards not ones given out by the company as gift certificates, those can still expire up to their discretion.

I got an email from Westjet last week that I could get my flight refunded back to my credit card, but I had to call them (1-888-937-8538), and provide my confirmation code. I'll probably do that next week.

Called Westjet, today.
The estimated hold time was 6+ hours, so I left my number for a call back. Then, I called back and left my phone on speaker while I was on hold. Got someone in under 90 min. Got my travel bank refunded to my credit card. 2 hours total on the phone. Worth it.

EDIT: The refund showed up on my credit card today. (Jul 7)

WestJet offering actual refunds now instead of credit? We had booked a flight with them back in Dec for travel in May but was issued credit for travel at a later date. With how things are going, I don't think we will be flying any time soon.

Just file dispute with your credit card company, they will handle it when you provide all the flight details. I didn't even bother contacting WestJet to begin with as I know these assholes won't give money back (just even trying to contact them whether livechat/phone is hard enough due to the volume they dealing with). Ain't got time being on hold for an hour.

My bank asked me when I contacted WestJet what did they advise/say, I just read exactly what WestJet emailed me, flight original payment to be issued at later date.

After approximately 9 months of this pandemic, I can honestly say it has forced me to develop myself in quite a few ways.

The first thing I got into was cooking. The inability to hit up my usual restaurants really motivated me to learn how to cook all my favourite asian dishes (especially HK cafe favs!). I'm too lazy to upload the photos but I made a buttload of delicious things!

Once summer rolled around, I got lazy about cooking and didn't feel like sweating in the kitchen. I turned my attention towards home decor instead. Honestly, I have never in my life put so much effort into making any place I've lived in look nice or trendy. It was kind of a nice distraction to spend time at Ikea, local furniture stores and online sites like wayfair etc. A big one here is actually FB Marketplace surprisingly. It's been pretty addictive looking for great deals on the second hand market. I guess that goes back to my previous experience working at Value Village. Quite glad I did though because it really makes a noticeable difference to make a place your own.

Naturally, home decor goes hand in hand with house plants. Other than looking nice and adding to the decor I had already, keeping plants at home is proven to improve air quality as well as your mental health/mood. I initially had a single bamboo plant and have now grown my collection to about 15 plants. Again, addictive and fun to find good deals on plants using FB marketplace as well as hitting up local stores for these. There's something about taking care of plants and watching them grow that's actually kinda cool.

Perhaps it's also worth mentioning that the pandemic really motivated me to stay informed. For years now, I have mostly ignored the news since I haven't paid for cable in probably a decade now. I also ignored it because of all the stupid, irrelevant news that gets covered. I really had to struggle for awhile as to where to get my information from as well as decipher which sources were actually correct.

Anyways, despite all the shit that has happened this year I can honestly say that I have been able to create a positive experience out of it and I hope others have been able to as well. Keep your heads up RS. Things will get better soon I hope.

Pretty similar to spoon.
I did learn to cook a lot more things. I made grocery runs without a list, see whatever was on sale or caught my eye then take it home and google a dish with whatever I had and just wing it. 4 of 5 times would turn out delicious!
I was always into plants so yes I know how what you mean.

One big positive I am glad about was that my entire family (parents, spouse and siblings) was finally able to spend a LOT of quality time together. Pre-pandemic most of us worked 60+ hours a week for over a decade and all at different times of the day so we rarely ever see each other for more than a moment. The only time we ever got really together for a full family dinner was like Christmas or Thanksgiving. This gave us an opportunity to bond. Take turns cooking, watch some movies, learn more about each other, etc ... it was nice.

I mean there were also moments when we saw each other TOO much and started to go stir-crazy ... lol

It was pretty nice of them to send this to us Canadian visitors............ Never got a letter from the other casinos down south.

Hello XXXXXXX!

With the US/Canadian border closed for so long, we at Northwood have really been missing you, our Canadian guests! It's frustrating for all of us here not to see your smiling faces, hear your family stories, and feel your wonderful support. It's just not the same without you.

We don't know when you'll be able to come play at Northwood again, but until that time, we wanted to assure you that you won't be forgotten. No matter how long it takes, your Winners Club Card will remain valid, and your Points will not expire. And we'll keep hoping that soon we can all travel freely and safely again.

In the meantime, know that here at Northwood we're doing everything we can to keep our guests safe and healthy, including installing plexiglass barriers between every slot machine and table game seat, requiring masks for everyone, and providing ample and frequent sanitizing. Our casino is now smoke-free to help prevent COVID transmission, we check temperatures at the door, and we have an on-site nurse to advise us on the best and safest policies for our staff and guests.

Take care, and stay safe until we can meet again!
Hope to see you soon!

I spent Saturday afternoon on Granville Island. Went there with my three children. They went off on their own and I sat on a bench by myself on the pier. Because of this pandemic, there was hardly anyone there. Closest person to me was 15 feet away. Anyway, it stopped raining and the sun was peeking through the clouds every now and then. Slight breeze. It was awesome. The smell of fresh air by the water. Looking across to the Burrard Street Bridge, I remembered how, as a child, I went to help my father out on his commercial fishing boat that moored under that bridge. Now it's all pleasure crafts. Anyway, just thought I'd share that. Oh, got a dozen Lee's doughnuts (must have when at Granville Island) and some Arancini from the Italian deli in the farmers market. I just wish my wife was still around. We would have enjoyed the scenery and the moment together. It still hurts when I see couples holding hands and walking............... I have my wife's cremains in a small container on a chain that I have in my watch pocket. I bring it out every now and then. Work all your life making ends meet, finally retired, no mortgage, and the one person you love is no longer there with you to enjoy it all.

Guys, if you have someone you love, hold on to them like there's no tomorrow.

4 o' clock in the morning.......... couldn't sleep. I don't know what came over me to spill out the touchy feely stuff. Not very asian male of me. At least older Asian male. I guess I'm one of those in between generational types. Anyway, yes, the journey was amazing. My biggest regret was not telling her how much I appreciated her support and friendship. As mentioned before in another thread a few years back, we grew up in the same DTES neighbourhood and went to the same schools. When we got married, I promised her we'd live in a brand new house. We managed that four times. It wasn't easy. After she passed away, my daughter, who spent a lot of time with her during the last few days of her life, revealed to me what mom said to her - that dad was reliable and kept his promises. That was the greatest compliment anyone could have given me. I still visit her everyday with flowers from our backyard. Driving up, I find myself still smiling - sometimes a sad smile. Damn, I have to stop this. I don't like talking about it in real life to friends and family, because it's so awkward. It makes people very uncomfortable. Maybe because RS is an on line community, it's different?

Anyway, I stay positive and look forward to a new day every time I get up.

Sorry for the long post, and thanks RS for listening.

FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT PARQ

It’s been a while and we have missed you. Thank you for your ongoing support during our temporary closure. The many enquiries we have received about our reopening have been such an encouragement to our team. To that effect, we wanted to connect with you on what is today, our third anniversary, and share what’s been going on at Parq Vancouver.

While we don’t have a reopening date for the casino and our gaming floor restaurants and lounges at this time, over the last few months, we have been hard at work preparing to welcome you back to a Parq Vancouver that is safe and healthy while remaining fun and entertaining. You will be the first to know when we have reopening news to share.

In the interim, Honey Salt, JW Marriott Parq Vancouver, the Spa by JW, and the Victor are all open and welcoming guests. Enclosed is a curated list of seasonal experiences that await your exploration.

Over the coming weeks, we will be in touch with more details on the many journeys available at Vancouver’s premiere entertainment destination. Thank you once again for your continued support and we look forward to welcoming you back to Parq Vancouver again soon.

Sincerely,
The Parq Vancouver Team

I often forget I'm wearing one. Ice cream on mask. Embarrassing to say the least. Good thing it was vanilla soft serve and not chocolate. Poked my mask with a straw a few times. Oh, and there's sneezing into the mask - no time to take it off or both hands are full of shopping bags.

I guess I have the "unfair" advantage of prolonged mask use experience. I'm hyper aware due to job training (and now covid obviously) of the do's and dont's regarding masks. Y'all have no idea what it's like to not be able to scratch or touch your face for 3-5 hours at a time lol. It's a special kind of torture.

PSA: Don't touch the front of your masks. It's a filter, you don't touch the dirty part. Instead, if you need to, remove your mask via the ear loops instead. Keeps your hands clean assuming no one coughed on the side of your face out there :lol

Because of this pandemic, I realized I actually enjoy staying at home and just spending all my time on the computer or doing projects in my garage. Besides losing my job, didn't really feel too much difference in terms of the social aspect...

Now I found a new job that's full time work from home, I barely go out or drive anymore. My insurance is up at the end of this month and I'm really considering not renewing it. It doesn't make sense to pay $2500~ a year to drive maybe 3x times a month.

Strange times... I love driving my car. I would literally get excited waking up in the morning or 5 mins before I'm off work, knowing I'm about to drive. But I just have no where to go on a consistent basis if it's not going out for work 5x a week.

(Since my wife still needs her car for work, we'll use it when we go out together, but driving her car is just not the same. Sad times, lol)

I've been told you can get day permits over the phone, maybe see how long it actually takes. If it's quick then should you need the car you can just call in, slap a permit on and away you go.

I was considering letting the insurance run out on my daily driver since I've only gone through 1 tank since March, then I realized if I'm doing that I may as well just sell it since I'm not going to need a 4 door DD or get a chance to go offroading for at least a couple years. If we find only having 1 vehicle a problem I'll slap insurance on my Celica, but if I do that I'll have to find a more fun route to the grocery store since that's the only place I go now.

or the 6 days referencing only for work/school commuting?

What if you're doing errands every time you go out, can you use your car, say 10 different days that month?

Has anyone came across an efficient way to get stuff in Blaine mailboxes back?

I've got a bunch of household stuff that I ordered earlier this year thinking the border would re-open some time.

With no end in sight, I'm starting to look for ways on how to get those stuff to Canada.

I checked with the mailbox, the only thing they could do is to ship them with a courier... but at the size of those items, the shipping would probably cost as much getting those stuff in Canada.

My absolute last resort is that I have a upcoming trip to US for business that despite my best effort, I cannot avoid the trip if I want to make sure it goes the way I want. It's in NorCal and I'm really thinking to just rent a one-way car and drive back just for the sake of picking my packages up.

I've recently read an article on Torontostar that a company came up with a clever way to bypass the restrictions for CDN snowbirds... they basically charter a helicopter flight from Hamilton to Buffalo airport, and ship their car on a flatbed to Buffalo airport so their owners can reunite with their cars there.

Just wondering if any company locally have came up with solutions to pick stuff up in Blaine.

Just a bunch of stuff... table legs (Floyd Detroit), humidifier (was on sale at Amazon), car stuff, some camera accessories... etc. Maybe about $1000 total if that...

Nothing really worth a whole lot of money, but all stuff I have actual use for, and it's just a hassle to get them here as I wouldn't know what to do with the one I have in the US if I do buy them in Canada.

Since the trip to US for business is inevitable, I thought it's an option. I've done trip down to SoCal cannonball style several times already (only stopping for food at drive-through and bathroom stop). NorCal is 6hr shorter drive. Driving doesn't bother me and in term of Covid contact is no worse, if not better than go into SFO and fly back.

No real difference in cost either... the only cost is the time and whatever lesson I'm going to get from border agents when I get back. So, I'm seeking alternatives. Ideally some commercial services that pick up stuff in WA and haul them back and have spaces on their truck. So they'd pick up "the cargo" and bring them over and I pick up this side of the border.

There are things in that shop that are not on-line. Discontinued stuff, for example. I saw this 9 inch "Winter Frost" pie plate on sale there for dirt cheap. I purchased 3 of them. The website said not in stock. It's been discontinued. I go back and there they were again. I purchased 3 more, because they were so handy for BBQ.

It's too much work and cost-wise to have everything shipped and fly home with me as some stuff won't fit into suitcases.

Either way, still debating about it... but most likely I'd do the drive for the heck of it given from the recent comments of JT, our borders/travel restrictions aren't likely to change any time soon.

Organized all the visits (5 of them) in one short trip to minimize any contact and drove back cannonball style except a quick shopping stop in Portland/Lynnwood and picking up my packages in Blaine.

US is so similar, yet so different post pandemic.

There were clearly less people on the street and shops and being on the West Coast, everyone are quite aware of using masks as well as keeping social distance... I'd go as far as saying more so than what we do here in BC. But I was still the rare outsider as I was fully equipped with face mask, face shield, disposable gloves and hand sanitizer/wipes with me at any given time.

All restaurants down... at least those that I was able to see (I was down for commercial RE) are all take out only or outdoor eating only. Absolutely no dine-in in all 3 states (CA, OR and WA) from what I could see.

I stayed at different Marriott... and room seemed clean smelling a bit alcohol-icky, which I assume are the solutions they are using to sanitize the room. But nothing overly so.

Anyway... started my self-isolation in our guest room... Hopefully the world outside doesn't change too much in 14days... :fuckthatshit:

Just had to drop off my cat to the vet with liver problems. Due to covid, they have a no visitors policy. I really hope tonight wasn't my last time seeing him.

Can't believe I wasn't even 30 yet when we adopted him :ahwow:

Jesus I had that too, dropped off my dog with a poisoning issue at 14 years old and she needed an ultrasound of her abdomen, was frantically pacing outside for 4 hours waiting and wondering if I was ever gonna see her again but it all worked out so far

Yeah... best of luck to your kitty Skinny. We lost our first, and by far the closest cat to liver complications. It always brings me tears when I hear cat with liver problem.

They expect to have to keep him for 4-5 days, assuming it's not something EXTRA complicated like cancer.

Just woke up, expecting to see him sitting there in the sunlight trying to keep warm

I can't lose him

Jett is in the ICU now, awaiting surgery to remove his gall bladder and a stone in the bile duct. This stone has caused his gall bladder, liver, intestine, and pancreas to all get inflamed and painful.

We only hope he makes it to Tuesday without the bladder rupturing spontaneously (it's in really rough shape) when he has the surgery at lunch (thanks to the vet for squeezing him in right before their xmas break). And from there we hope he can recover at 12 years old.

He's had a rough week of transporting between 3 different vets of varying competency, 3 ultrasounds, x-rays, catheters, feeding tube up his nose, shaving different parts his body, etc. He can't eat but he's getting nutrition through the nose tube. After surgery he'll have one cut directly into his esophagus which will be there for at least a month so we can feed him that way at home.

I'm off to write a nasty review of the first vet. I'm not even pissed about spending around $20K more than we should have, it's the fact that we weren't able to find the problem properly until today, rather than 3 days ago.

Jett would appreciate any good vibes from the RS fam, and I appreciate it too. Wish us luck!

As for this thread, the new vet allows us to visit him once a day, one at a time, for about 20 minutes. So that's good

And BTW if your cat is ever scared like Jett is here, try looking directly into his eyes and blinking slowly. They are really assured by that, and eventually they'll calm down a bit.

We laid our kitty to rest after 19 years this past summer. The kids had a good cry and about 2 hours later they asked for a dog. BrokeBack

Jett had his surgery today. There were some complications, but it wasn't a disaster. There were actually two stones, the second of which was in a much trickier spot to access. They had to cut the bile duct open to get it out (usually they try to squeeze it down the tube back to the bladder before removing it).

They say the next few days are crucial, and as long as those wounds heal up without bile leaking out, he might even be able to go home with us on the 24th, in time for christmas. Not like he'll be running around, but at least he'll finally be home again. We'll be feeding him food and meds through that tube you see in his throat. The vets said that his pancreas is in really rough shape. But they said they are 'cautiously optimistic' he can recover.

Thanks again everyone for all your support. 2020 has sucked real bad for us, and this was an ass kicker at the end of it. I send all your good vibes his way and I think he'll make it through. He's a tough kitty for being a spoiled 12 year old indoor cat ;)

Jett is coming home today!!! I could cry BibleThump

They did a final blood test to make sure his liver is recovering

ALT is at 350 today, from 540 on Sunday, from 1700 last week. Normal is <130
GGT is at 2, which is normal, from 10 on Sunday, and 14 last week
Biliburin (the stuff that gives you jaundice) is at 51, from 142 Sunday, 112 last week. Normal is <15

So 2 days after removing the stones and gall bladder, his liver is showing signs of recovery already. He ate food overnight!

He's still not out of the woods yet, we need to make sure his pancreas heals up. But he was SO close to dying, it feels so good to have him home again. The longest he's been away from home is just a few hours to get his teeth fixed after an accident, and once for a checkup after another accident (cats)

Can't wait just to sit with him in bed all day today

Thanks again everyone for your support during these hard times. Big hugs to the RS fam SeemsGood

Edit: Now that we know he's healthy we can start freaking out over the costs... Everyone in HK got $10K this year, so we spent our $20K already on the two vets who gave us the runaround for the first 3 days. This current vet gave us a $5K break because of that (they're the vet my wife's dog rescue company is partnered with), but it's still around $30K for the surgery alone. We'll find out what the total bill is, I expect it to be around $45K or so.

So yeah after the holidays I'll be looking for another job  If anyone here knows someone in HK hiring for coffee roasting or even bartending... :ahwow:

He's seen better days

Various family members chipped in to help out with his bills. I don't know what I did to deserve having such wonderful people in my life but I'll try to earn it from now on BibleThump

I didn't intend to take over this thread like this so I'll leave it at that. Now back to giving Jett snuggies! And jamming 40g of food down his tube WutFace

Because of the pandemic, I am making whatever this is instead of a whole turkey.

I've had those several times before, from Butterball. They're really quite good.

We looked all over for one because we don't want to cook a full turkey for just us, but this is the first year nobody had any FailFish

Doing roast beef instead

My mom is doing prime rib roast, we're going to go pick it up and bring it home to re-heat. Wave through the window for us will be the extent of social interaction tomorrow. Hopefully back to a regular Christmas next year.

We couldn't find a fresh turkey anywhere! (some places didn't even have frozen ones left!) Forget a butterball! Had to go out to coquitlam to find some fresh turkeys available, been brining it since yesterday, hopefully it turns out well

Almost went for a duck/goose instead but got lucky with coquitlam superstore (on the 23rd)

I saw on RFD, Costco had $25 off fresh turkeys yesterday (in-store only). Looked like they had a lot.

So my brother got married a couple months ago, very small family gathering (obviously) of 8 people in the back yard. None of my other family like cousins, or grandparents were invited ... sucks but it is what it is... super simple, exchange vows, got a small cake, ate it, had family dinner and it was done within a couple hours.
A huge difference from my wedding 5 years ago. Booking the venues, speeches, tuxes, etc ..... Don't anybody tell my wife but I think I may prefer these smaller ones, way less stressful planning haha not to mention a helluva lot cheaper!

Just curious if anyone else was planning to get married the past year or attended a wedding or knew of weddings that got postponed/cancelled because of the pandemic?
Just pushing it back to whenever things go back to normal?

My wedding was just like your brother's, except it was in 2008 LUL Definitely not into the whole "look at us" thing of big weddings.

We have a cousin planning on doing the full wedding thing this September... I think they set the date last year in the middle of the pandemic (or are we even at the middle yet?). Good luck with that!

my wedding was suppose to happen in Aug but we had to move it since our venue didn't know if they were able to open during that time. we moved it to this year summer so hopefully we are able to host the wedding.
In the meantime we did a small wedding on our original date.

Even if it doesn't turn back to normal, we will still host it at our original venue and hope they are open.
