Fellow Revsceners,

I'm in the market for a new place, and have noticed a dozen or so placed I've seen in person have Samsung appliances.

I know Samsung has gotten into the home appliance game a while ago, as with LG. I am more familiar with the usual suspects in the home appliance game, including a few niche brands.

Based on some anecdotal evidence an experience of people we know, I've seen the following:

Maytag / Whirlpool: One and the same company now. Older units seem to be very reliable. Not sure about the new ones.

LG: Not entirely sure but we have a stacked washer/dryer at my parents place. It's okay, but not the world's best. It was one of the early model years when they got into the game. It's been quite reliable so far.

Kenmore: I think most of these are re-brands? (Not sure.) Seem to be reliable, but unsure of what they are like these days.

GE: I don't know anyone with GE appliances, so unsure of quality/reliability.

JennAir: Most of our appliances at my parents house are JennAir and are 35+ years old. They've been very reliable, but obviously not cutting edge anymore compared to today's standards. An acquaintance of mine moved into a new unit and pretty much everything that could wrong, went wrong. I understand they are marketed as premium appliances under the Electrolux group. Oven lights turns on by themselves, cook tops turned on by themselves (WTF?!) and lights would go flashing crazy like a BMW on a bad day. Tough one here haha

Bosch/Miele/KitchenAid: I personally don't know anyone whose got Bosch/Miele/KitchenAid appliances, so hard to say.

Blomberg: My current unit has Blomberg appliances (fridge / washer / dryer, and dishwasher.) Been good overall. Had one part replaced in the fridge under warranty, and good so far. I think the rollers/drum in my dryer are on the way out, or at least need some kind of servicing (will find out what's wrong this Wednesday.) Obscure brand, but has been good otherwise.

I'm probably missing a handful of brands. Hoping some of you guys can chime in on your experiences. Thanks!

One of my previous apartments came with new GE everything -- gas stove tops, oven, fridge, regular sized washer and dryer. During my time there, both as a resident and as landlord for something like 4 - 6 years, they have all worked flawlessly. I thought the appliances were of high quality, and they even withstood the abuse from my tenants when I no longer lived there.

I've had some terrible experience with Whirlpool washers and dryers. They were utter garbage. We bought a set of apartment-sized ones for our tenant when the existing set died (unsure of brand now). I think they lasted maybe ~3 yrs while having 1 major failure some time beyond the 1 year warranty mark. We later replaced that Whirlpool set with another Whirlpool set -- I know, but the tenants needed something right away, and there wasn't anything else in that size in stock at the time -- and that second set lasted maybe 2 or 3 years, with its final year being intermittently non-functional. Don't waste your time or money on these. Their slightly cheaper prices are totally not worth your trouble. Another thing was, both the washer and dryer were noise AF. Not good in a small apartment at all.

We replaced the pos Whirlpool set with an entry level model Bosch set, and the Bosch were absolutely fantastic. And they were very quiet too. Perhaps because they were an entry level model, they really weren't that much more expensive than other brands.

Just like TV’s avoid Samsung and LG if you want something that lasts.

I avoided samsung washer dryers, went with LG. Would avoid the 2 for kitchen appliances though.

However LG tvs are the best. My LG oled shits on my kuro all day.

When i was choosing appliances it was miele vs thermador, saved 12k with thermador. Plus im a shitty cook so...yeah

Did a full reno in the kitchen a few years back and got a full set from Samsung. Fridge, Range, Dishwasher etc. No issues with any of them so far.

Our old place had Whirlpool appliances, and the fridge broke right outside the warranty. Technician said it was a super common thing that they go bad right around this time. Washer also went bad, sensor failure that cost way more in labour than parts.

I've narrowed down my top three properties.

1. My favourite property is a turn-key solution. Well-taken care of by owners, beautifully renovated, with lots of attention to detail (near flawless.) The only thing that irks me is they replaced all their appliances in 2019 with Samsung - Fridge, stove, dish washer, microwave/hood fan, and washer dryer. I kind of wished that they didn't, so it would leave me with some room for negotiations.

2. Second property has all new Maytag appliances, I think (I have to check my notes.) They're all brand new, so I'm not 100% hell bent on this.

3. Unit #3 is a weird one. They have a mix of LG (fridge) Whirlpool stove/oven, Bosch dish washer, and some bizarre Maytag washer/dryer with a super old skool logo on it (never seen this one before.)

If I were buying a fixer-upper, or were renovating, then this would give me the freedom to pick and choose what to get, but given that most of these are turn-key units/move-in ready, it would be silly to just rip out all the year-old appliances to throw something in I pick and choose. The Samsung one is a weird one for me because I am of the opinion that planned obsolescence is part of their manufacturing and marketing process.

Full Reno eight years ago. Samsung glass top range and fridge. No issues. Miele dishwasher. Back then if you wanted the cutlery tray, it was that or Bosch mainly. Wanted the tray for chopsticks. No issues at all .

I have the old school black and brown Maytag washer and dryer. The things will probably outlive me. Seriously though, they're all analog so they can actually be fixed easily, unlike the new ones.

We switched from a whirlpool stackable washer and dryer to a GE one 2 years ago. They were the only brands still offering vented compact (24") dryers. We liked the design and sturdiness of the Bosch and Miele units, but both were ventless and were over $800 more.

The GE dryer started having noise issue and I had to go back and forth with the manufacturer to ask for repairs and finally a full replacement. The whole process took 9 months.... The washer has been working fine though and I like how straight forward it is without all the gimmicky tech.

The stove, fridge and dishwasher from Bosch. Ultimately it was decided based on looks and sell point for our condo rather than on performance.

My parents have all Samsung appliances in their home. They went with the lower end models which do not have the latest tech, but it's been working flawless so far the past 5 years.

Wow, that sucks. What exactly happened, and did warranty cover anything? Another acquaintance of mine also had the same thing happen to them. Had solid Maytag fridge for 20 years, and one day, wife needed to keep up with the Jones' and got the Samsung fridge. Unit died a miserable death 1.5 years in. Samsung couldn't figure out what was wrong. They were pretty much out of pocket on costs and ended up replacing it with another Maytag.

There’s been a major design flaw for years with Samsung fridges. Inside the back panel there’s a condenser, with a heat element that is supposed to direct any condensation down a drain tube for evaporation. Over time (in my case every 3 months) the drain tube freezes solid and condensation drips under the crispers (.5L every few weeks on either side). Not to mention was causing all my food to freeze, no matter the temp setting on the fridge.

My warranty expired 5 months ago so I was SOL. I tried a few DIY tips that worked for people online (wrap a piece of copper line off the heater down the hole). It worked but still froze over time.

My final straw was last week. My wife and I were at the dinner table and we hear water spraying. The drain tube had froze, which apparently caused the plastic water line to the filter to freeze and explode. (Thank god we were home).

I ended up tossing it on marketplace for $750 explaining the issues. A fridge mechanic gave me full asking and said he’s fixed thousands ($100 in parts, 2hrs labor - $700 fix for the consumer)

I’ve had the KitchenAid KRFF507HPS for a few weeks now, so far so good.

I just checked, and it appears you still can.

Kenmore, as a brand, still exists, and as tiger_handheld mentioned, a bunch of different manufacturers likely re-badge existing products, or build them to Kenmore's specifications. Kenmore is owned by Transformco, acting as the vessel since Sears filed for Chapter 11 protection.

Had I since the condo was built, so about 5 years now.

No issue yet. (touch wood). We went for the Bosch upgrade because we liked how clean and simple the machines looked.

If you want to fix anything rebrands are a pain because the brand on the badge will have no support and you'll have to sort out the matching model number from the people who actually made it.

My parents old place had a mish mash of high end models and everything had problems or just broke. From what I can tell high end stuff is just as likely to crap out as the cheap stuff so I just buy the cheapest one that has the features I want and I'll just replace it if it breaks without worrying about it. 5.5 years on all the Frigidaire stuff in the kitchen, 3 on the Samsung washer/dryer, no issues.

Find your budget first.
then, balance out in each appliances in your budget.

As for brand recognition, Gaggenau > Miele = Sub Zero / Wolf > Thermador = GE Monogram > JennAir > GE (GE, Profile, Cafe) > Electrolux = KitchenAid > LG > Samsung > Maytag > Frigidaire >Whirlpool > Amana

Also, each brand has its own strong category.
Such as Sub Zero is known for building best fridge in years. But it costs same as a toyota corolla.

Fridge and Laundry, go for LG for sure. Bosch is not bad too, now it has dual compressor in its free standing fridge. Its quite amazing.
Microwave, go for Panasonic for sure...i think most of us know it.
Dishwasher, Bosch is very famous with their Dishwasher. Cost round 1000 +/- , anything lower than that, i wouldn't touch.
Gas range, go with GE Cafe or profile...hands down performance compare to other brand. Except Professional brands such as Wolf or Miele...etc.
Electric range, i would go with Induction range now, but need to make sure your amperage is enough to supply. Super fast and safe!!! high heat and super easy clean. Never stick. GE Cafe again the winner.

Sub-zero fridge, early 90s, no issues still running like new.

You get what you pay for, just like everything else in life.

Gas range/range tops = gaggenau, Miele, wolf, viking. My Miele hood fan is very powerful, dual extractors 1200cfm.
Dishwasher = Miele, Bosch. My Miele dw is very quiet, barely hear it running.
Fridge = Sub-zero, gaggenau, Miele.
Steam oven = gaggenau, Miele.

I think for appliances, esthetics and design of your house plays a huge role, alot of these high end appliances can be panel finished and integrated into your kitchen for a clean and modern look.

Have the same Samsung fridge for the last at least 13 years with no issues. Doesn't have smart features, just has the water/ice dispenser. The only thing we've been replacing regularly is the in-fridge water dispenser filter.

Not going to lie, but at the risk of coming off as a newb, I have never heard of Sub Zero fridges until this thread. I'll take a look into this as part of my research.

The property I have my eye on has everything Samsung, and while it isn't an eyesore, it's evident that the general design and look/aesthetics of the house was not considered into the purchase. It would suck to just throw them out/sell on the market again seeing as the appliances are a year old, and I have no real reason to spend wads of cash on appliances again, especially after land transfer taxes, legal fees, and whatever comes with closing costs.

Interesting part on the Miele hood fan; I always thought Asian brands like Sakura and Pacific were at the top of their game. :p

Which model number of hood range do you have? This is likely something I will replace, depending on where I end up buying.

Hood fan is not that easy...

There are chimney, insert, pro, under cabinet...etc styles.

You need to check your duct size first.

Miele dual blower can do 1100 CFM, not 1200 CFM, which means you will need 10 inch duct. Also, it will cost close to $4000
Also, that hood has to be 36inch wide, so dual motors can fit in.
Otherwise, the blower has to be external mounted outside your house.

If you cant have 10inch duct, don't to anything more than 700 CFM.

Typical houses, might have 6-8inch duct.
Town houses, Apartment might have 5-6inch duct.

Basically, if you only have 6-8 duct size. Sakura or Pacific brands are still very good for the power.
They are rated at 680 CFM.

Sufficient cfm calculation is like this -> Total amount of Gas Cooktop burners BTU / 100 = sufficient CFM.
If you have electric stove or cooktop, normally, 600 CFM is more than enough.

Miele hood is the DAR 1230 dual blower @ 10" duct.
And yes it's 1100cfm not 1200.

I bought all mine Miele when they have the promotion and got 10year warranty on top.

If you buy 5 or more pieces then you get a free site/home visit by Miele tech, they will go over all the measurements and rough ins to make sure all your appliances are going to fit/work.

The commission for sales on Miele was pretty decimal, I think it was 2%.

Well, service tech just came by and checked out the dryer at my place. Turns out the vent connection at the back of the dryer was loose, and accentuated the rolling noise. I can confirm my issue with the dryer was self inflicted.

Had a package of cleaning sponges sitting on top of the dryer, and it fell to the back. Had to get a broom to stick handle it out, and I knocked out the vent tube. Time to put my dunce cap on.

Do you have any suggestions of hood range that offer same performance as Sakura but more "modern"?

Yes, there are.

But the cost is super hard to beat Sakura brand.
Sakura usually cost from $300-800
680CFM is around $400-500

Usually good looking and modern style are around $800-1200

Few thing need to check first.
1. Duct size
2. Style you want. (Really depends on what kinda cabinet you have now.)
3. Cost.
4. Power.
5. Filter Style. (Such as typical mash filter, or baffle filter)
6. For gas cooktop or Electric cooktop.
7. clearance in between your cooktop and bottom of the hood. (Gas needs 30inch at least, electric can be 24inch)

Or
Post a picture of your hood.
then, i can help you out with more details.

Check this out.
Best by Broan, 600 CFM, with Touch sensor control, Baffle filter (Easy Clean, just put in dishwasher), LED lighting...etc.
Front control panel is high gloss glass panel. (You can choose color for your front panel too. Black, White, Stainless Steel ...etc.)

Range hoods are such a fucking rip off for what they are it’s rediculous. I wanted to punch the guy in the head at trail when I told him my budget for a range good was $1400 and he said “ok let’s start with the low end stuff then”

I ended up buying an Ancona 800CFM from Costco for around $700 I was fairly limited in my options as I need a pedestal hood as my range is floating in the middle of the island but I’m completely happy with the Ancona and have zero complaints. I ran new 8” ducting for it when my ceiling was open and it very effectively pulls smoke etc. Out it also has stainless removable grills that are kind of like quasi restaurant grade and super easy to clean

I purchased my Kitchenaid suite from Bestbuy with their extended geek squad warantee for another $650 for 5 years which seemed fairly reasonable.

The only issue I’ve ever had is the igniter on my range has not worked for a year or so but I lost my receipts, I ended up going back into best buy and they reprinted them for me and I’m in the process of making a claim to have them repaired. We will see how the service goes though because so far it’s been a headache.

I’d stay as far away as you can from Samsung dishwasher. We built a townhouse project in 2012 that had Samsung DW, before the entire project was even complete I think we had swapped out almost 60 of these out of the total 120 units in the development.

Gooooood choice that you went with 8inch duct!!
I told all my client who is building single family house to have 8 inch duct. (Except 10inch for dual blowers)
Perfect for air to go out without bottleneck.

FYI, one of the Samsung Dishwasher batch has got their door lock mechanisms installed all backwards. It caused a lot issue back in few years ago.

I still don't understand how can they make such mistake and shipped products out.

I will only say avoid Samsung at all costs. I have rarely if ever boycotted a company but Samsung is the first. Aside from phones no fucking way.

I've owned many appliances in my lifetime and anytime something broke at my parents or my inlaws the item was like 10+ years old until Samsung. When I was living at my inlaws we had 1 Samsung TV break in just over a year, we had 1 samsung washer die in under 2 years, and we also had 1 Samsung dryer die around the same time. When I moved into my own place I bought which came with brand new Samsung washer and dryers (higher model) the washer died in under a year. That's 4 items that died in under 2 years which is insane!

Maybe Sakura and Pacific still are boss but non asians just don't know. It's like Seahorse matresses imo, white people won't know wtf you're talking about and in the grand scheme of things it will never get the recognition in the mainstream but we know for a fact that shit is solid and lasts at a fraction of the cost.

I swapped out the hood fan in our new townhome a year and a half ago because the one they installed was a super sad 400CFM model, for 2 years I constantly hear smoke alarms going off around the complex.

I ended up getting a Faber 30 inch 600CFM Cristal SS, it's pretty sleek and can slide in and out to turn on and off although I turn that setting off and just have it always out and manually turn on via the button instead. So far so good I guess, I had to get the motor replaced once because it was greased up as fuck. In hind site I probably didn't turn it on to a high enough setting when I'm doing crazy cooking + I didn't wash the grills often enough.

I've always lived in relatively new concrete highrises which invariably had GE appliances, particularly gas stove. I never had any failures whatsoever in any so they really do seem reliable.

With that said, we recently moved into a detached house which had been somewhat renovated and it has a Samsung range which I don't imagine was that expensive, but it is WAY better than the GEs I have had for many years. The hottest burner is MUCH hotter, and the smallest burner is smaller - giving a much better range for either simmering a very small pot or getting a wok or big frying pan smoking hot.

I think people overestimate the importance of the brand names and underestimate how many specific bargain basement models are basically created purely for developers or ultra cheap renovations.

Wow, that is terrible.

The hottest burner is MUCH hotter, and the smallest burner is smaller - giving a much better range for either simmering a very small pot or getting a wok or big frying pan smoking hot.

Is this because the burners are at a higher output or brand name. If you bought a V6 versus V12, then i would bet it burns hotter, regardless of brand name... right?

Fair point, but in all honesty, it could also be brand and level/tier of appliance, no? I mean, if Ferrari F1 engines are pumping out 1000HP while maintaining a low consistent temperatures vs. a Honda or Nissan/Renault engine pumping out the same HP but running hotter, and using inferior materials etc. it could run hotter and fail a lot faster.

very well said!!

each brand has their high end model and basic model.
You gotta compare apple to apple on the models. To compare specs.
Not just compare brand names

You can't really compare Mercedes AMG GT Black Series to BWM M5 Competition.

GE Monogram or GE Cafe range will beat Samsung range to the floor like no tomorrow.

What Samsung is good at is "The Appearance and tech".
But when comes to reliability. They have a long way to go.

@ime2006 - Are all GE appliances owned/made/manufactured by Haier? Is there a difference in quality between GE Cafe and Haier stuff?

The Faber hood fan looks pretty nice. What do I need to know/check to see if it will work for my application? I've put in an offer on a home so let's see if I get it, or if I'll be homeless and end up living with TOS'd.

GE's appliances dept sold to Haier years ago.
Haier is more of doing funding. Not intervene on how GE do things.
Still same factory in U.S., same quality control.

As for Haier brand, i would stay away...LOL
Sold 5 of Haier all in one laundry unit. 3 have issues.

But some of entry level GE appliances are sharing same model with Haier.

First thing you need to do is, find original invoice/receipt.
Contact whoever purchased it. They should have invoice.
If they didn't keep the invoice. Ask them where they bought it from.
Then, you can go to the store ask for invoice.

Because warranty starts by delivery date of the appliances. Warranty claim needs document to prove date of delivery.
Some brands, the warranty starts from installation completion date. Such as Sub Zero/Wolf/ Miele/ Gaggenau...etc.

Why stay away from the Euro stuff? Going only by what was shared in this thread, it appears the Euro stuff is holding up solid. Unless the Euro stuff in the condos your friend is managing are bottom of the barrel line of products, then I guess the same can be said about any brand, no?

GE Cafe again the winner.

.

You haven't experienced any issues with LG compressors?

https://www.classaction.org/lg-refrigerator-linear-compressor-failure-lawsuits

If I was buying a new 36 inch freestanding fridge today, I would get the newer Bosch with the dual compressors/evaporators. However, reliability is unknown as they only came out last year, and their previous freestanding fridges were outsourced and built by someone else

We are aware of that issue from the news.
But I have not have any clients experienced compressor issue with LG so far.

As for Bosch dual compressor fridge, its probably best performance free standing fridge on the market without costing over $5k
And you are right, no one knows its reliability yet as it just came out not long ago.

Previously Bosch free standing fridges were built by Daewoo as i remember

It can get complicated. really depending on situation, who you dealing with.
As you said because of violating privacy law. Yes, The best way is to get original owner to ask for invoices.
If they do end up giving you original invoice/receipt, then, manufacture will need proof of delivery date thats printed on the invoice.
Manufacturer will also ask serial number of the products during warranty claim.

For some companies/shops.
You will need to bring occupancy documents that proves you are the new owner.
Because warranty is provided by Manufacturers, so some shops will help contact manufacturers in this situation.
Myself helped a lot of new apartment owners to claim their warranty by going this method and without needing of giving out original invoices to new owner.
Because we submit original invoices directly to manufacturer, and also updated new owner info with manufacturers.

So my offer is pending acceptance, and what's left is an inspection. Out of all the major appliances in the household, the washer/dryer were not replaced. I believe they are original Maytag units, probably around 18 years old, but may be less than that.

I recall seeing the Maytag washer/dryer with something "commercial grade" on the label. Not sure if it means anything to you. Any point in replacing them? I would prefer something that is stackable (but not necessary) and more energy efficient. Could you offer a few recommendations? (Please no Samsung haha) Let's leave budget out of the question for now. :D

If its 18 yrs old, i would totally replace them.
Those old Maytag machine last forever!! But they are just not very efficient.

Most energy efficient laundry set will be with Heat Pump Dryer.
Heat pump dryer (Ventless) recycles the heat to be super efficient in energy consumption. But as i know, Heat pump tech only can be found in compact size dryer.

Here are the recommendations.
Full Size: LG WM3800HBA/DLEX3900B Set. Or WM3700/DLEX3700 Set
Compact Size: Miele WWH860WCS / TWI180WP Heat Pump Set.

Nowadays, 99% front loaders can be stacked.
Here is the check list we need to verify first.
- Usable Space (Width, Depth, and Height)
- What are the Power available in there ? (110v and 240v)
- Location of the Vent for dryer

There are two standard size on the market.
1. Full Size - 27W, 30D, 39H (78H when stacked), Washer capacity: 5.2 cu.ft.
Required Space: 29W, 35D, 80H the best.

2. Compact Size - 24W, 25D, 34H (68H when stacked), Washer Capacity: 2 to 2.6 cu.ft.
Required Space: 26W, 30D, 70H the best.

Different brands, have different depth. But width and height are almost the same across all brands.

If you don't have enough space in depth. Some dryer can do side vent, it will shave out 3-4inch in depth. But, then width requirement increases by 5inch.

Thanks for the details.

I "think" the current washer/dryer is original (looks ghetto) and full size, but I could be wrong.

Is there a reason why you recommend LG washer/driers? I may be more interested in a compact size as I may want to build a new powder room on the main floor. Any other recommendations besides Miele? (Shit is baller man haha)

Full Size i recommended LG, the reason is because, its very durable.
We rarely have service call for LG laundries. As for performance LG is on top as well.
Myself is also using LG, its 12 yrs old and still running. I have 4 cats in the house. My wife has to do laundry 3-4 times a week.

The only brand that can compete with Miele is ASKO, But better in price.
They are in the $4,000 +/-
https://www.askona.com/washer/w2084w
https://www.askona.com/dryer/t208hw (Heat Pump dryer)

Or GE Set, around $2200 +/-

https://www.geappliances.ca/dryers/gft14jsimww/ger-41-cu-ft-capacity-24-ventless-condenser-front-load-electric-dryer-white-gft14jsimww

These are the with Heat Pump dryers, myself would buy.

LG, Bosch don't have heap pump dryer yet, so, not listed here.
Blomberg, and GORENJE, Germany brands both carry heat pumps dryer.
they both are around $2800 -/+, But i do not like their quality personally.

If you don't need to have the latest and the greatest, I would keep the Maytag. For the dryer, if it isn't too fancy, it would likely last forever. :lol Yeah, it's probably not that efficient, but I recall doing the math years ago to determine whether it was worth buying a new washing machine. Yes, a new machine is much more efficient (much, much more) than my old machine, but what does that mean in real dollars, based on the electricity rates at the time that only meant a savings of $50 or so per year. If that new machine costs $1k, I would need to use it for 20 years before I realize any real savings; a new machine might not even last that long. That old machine, it still works great!

It's akin to people buying a new Tesla, not because they need a new car, but to save on gas! Okay, you save $2k per year in gas, but you just spent $40-50k out of pocket on the new car. FailFish

If you want a new set, that's a different story.

bcrdukes

I don't "need" a new washer/dryer. I want a new set in order to make room to build a powder room beside the laundry room; the current set is not stackable. If I could stack them, this wouldn't be so much a want or need. :p

Completely understand the cost savings and amortization of the upfront cost of the new washer/dryer - I totally get it. But I don't know the condition of it, and whether it's worth keeping. I don't plan on being at this place for more than 3 - 4 years, 5 max. New appliances will go a long way for resale.

underscore
08-10-2020, 03:43 PM
I've seen non-stackable units stacked by building a counter/shelf that the dryer sits on. If I had the time I would've liked to do that myself so I don't have to try to move the two of them together should one need to come out.

It's a bit of premium, but I swear by Miele's DW after my parents' dw (LG one) went kaput and we switched to Miele followed the technician's recommendation. He didn't sell them, so there was no conflict of interest... well... it worked so well that we never needed his service ever again for a good 5+yrs. :fuckthatshit:

His explanation was that many brands use a lot of plastic parts in them to save cost, while Miele uses mostly stainless steel for those equivalent parts.

And it also had the lowest power consumption while really does a good job cleaning dishes.

I'd recommend to take a look at them if you are shopping for a new one.

That's my conundrum - I've sold my place, so I need to get this dishwasher fixed (or buy a new one.) My new place has literally brand new Whirlpool appliances (not Maytag as I previously posted.) My only course of action is to see if the store the owner bought them from will take them back in exchange for a credit to be applied to something like a Miele, but they will probably tell me to drop dead. I'll give it a shot this weekend.

Any how, back to my Blomberg dishwasher - It's been good...up until now. :lol And you are right, it seems like it's mostly plastic components based on what I can find from a parts list/diagram, but my only suspicion now is the float, pump, or filter internally where something is clogged. I'd take it apart but there are no diagrams or anything, so rather than break it even more, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and let a technician do his job. That, and getting Blomberg parts is NOT easy. Thank goodness for 5 year warranty. :okay:

Also picked up a Broan wall mount hood range. My duct is just 5 inches which is kinda fail so I just got a 500 CFM hood range.

So this is a review basically of the "Geeksquad" extended warrantee. I've posted on a few sites in order to give a heads up for anyone else

Personally I had an amazing experience in-store at bestbuy Metrotown dealing with the sales manager for appliances there. he was excellent and my gripe isn't with him or the Metrotown location at all, its all to do with the warrantee:

In 2016 I purchased 2 entire kitchen suites from BestBuy Metrotown. One higher end set for my home with Kitchenaid Gas range, dish, fridge and then lower end electric set for my suite. The experience in-store was great I dealt with the manager there and he was fantastic. My Beef is with the extended geeksquad warrantee, which cost approx $1100 for 5 year extended on both sets.

The igniters on my range went about a year ago and I just couldn't be bothered to call in. Finally I had some time and dug out my receipts. I had every receipt in a folder except the range receipt.. so I went to Bestbuy Metrotown and got a re-print of the receipt. When he gave it to me he asked if I had exchanged my original range, I said no, the range I have now is the one I've had since delivery etc. He then said that it looked it was damaged at the warehouse and then a different one was ordered in and delivered. To his credit he said that he could look into it further if there was any issue, however, its not very convenient for me to have to return in-store to deal with this, especially in these times.

Upon calling in to the geeksquad warantee I was informed that since the range I had the receipt for was an exchange the warrantee did not transfer and I was not eligible for a claim on it...

I then spent almost 2 hours over 2 different calls having to explain this situation twice in order for them to finally realize what had happened and why it was in fact still under warrantee. I had every single receipt number, every transaction ID, every model number, and the email associated with my bestbuy account.

Now, finally when the geeksquad sorted it out, they then send the info over to "Trans Global" who is there service contractor for any work to be performed.

I then took 4 phone calls from Trans Global attempting to setup the repair. I gave them the case number, as well as the model and serial number for my range THREE TIMES. finally the day comes for the service appointment. The technician shows up and right away he says he was expecting an Electrolux range. After I had specifically said kitchenaid from the beginning, provided serial and model, etc. He then informed me that the parts were not in yet and we would have to book yet another appointment, and left.

Frankly, I could only imagine the absolute nightmare you would experience if you had a critical issue which needed to be addressed immediately like your fridge breaking down etc. My issue is for a simple igniter problem and it has been an absolute headache from start to finish.

I DO NOT recommend using the geeksquad service plan for anything, and frankly, even at the "reasonable" amount they charge, I think you're far better off saving the money and having a private service company repair any issue you may experience as opposed to going through this circus of headaches to address any warrantee issue.

I DO NOT recommend using the geeksquad service plan for anything, and frankly, even at the "reasonable" amount they charge, I think you're far better off saving the money and having a private service company repair any issue you may experience as opposed to going through this circus of headaches to address any warrantee issue.

GeekSquad is not authorized by manufacturers to do any warranty services or claim.
Don't know how and why they sell extended GeekSquad warranty.

Manufacturers only authorize certain local service companies to service their products.

such as
- Totem Appliance
- Priority Appliance
- Trans Global
- Consumer Refrigeration & Appliances Service Ltd.
- Pacific Specialty Brands
- Shoreline Appliances
...etc.

Warranty service claim can be nightmares if you do it your own.
And
As i know, BESTBUY will not help client to claim manufacturers warranty.

Bought a new top load GE washer from Home Depot April 2019, now it's acting fucked up (the day I have the most laundry LOL). Went online to submit for repair technician since I am still covered under GE 2-year warranty (cross fingers nothing comes out of my pocket $$$).

Dumped all my laundry/detergent in, closed the lid and hit start button. The latch lever locks the door and all the green lights are blacked out and the water fills for a few seconds and stops. Door latch releases....Kept trying and eventually gave up. 30 minutes though I'd give it another run, this time finally fills with water and washes; however, it would stop part way and the latch makes this clicking sound a few times before it stops. Hit the start button again and washes continue until it drains, at this point it skips the rinse and goes directly to the spin cycle where it fills and drains and rocks violently. Shut this POS off and rinse my clothes with my hands LOL. Spent 1.5 hours trying to wash my fucking clothes.

Brace yourself for the amount of back and forth calls/emails with MABE (they deal with the warranty). Also, if you can ask for a technician from Totem instead of Platinum Appliance.

Maybe it's where I am, but based on my recent experience, most stores will not refer you to anyone. They may have an in-house team, or subcontract the installation work to someone for brand new installations. For repairs, they pretty much tell me to take a hike and to call the manufacturer.

I just used Home Depot’s contractor. HD’s price was ~$200 installed including removal/recycling of the old unit. Nice/knowledgeable guy who I might get to install a new garburator so got his contact info that he technically wasn’t supposed to share.

Lol so to follow up with my “extended geek squad warantee” I hadn’t heard anything still until yesterday so I wasted like 2 hours on hold and got hung up on twice

Finally call geek squad directly and give them the reference number and the guy, to his credit, was very helpful and tells me oh..we rejected the claim because it doesn’t make financial sense to repair so you’re getting a replacement..

The range was like $3000...it makes more sense to give me a brand new $3000 range than fix a basic igniter system for the burners? Lol ok..

I still won’t believe it until it happens but we will see..

I’m just replacing the unit that came with my house. When the dishwasher runs, dirty water sometimes fills one of the sinks a little since it died. We’ve been manually cranking it to drain the sink which isn’t much work but no fun.

Luckily this is the same unit and ~$60 less on amazon than Home Depot and other big box retailers : https://www.amazon.ca/InSinkErator-Badger-444-Household-Disposer/dp/B00ZZN316C

@ Hehe - Eff you, you bastard.

Went to the Miele Experience Centre in Vaughan today. Their dishwashers are fucking NICE. But the one I would like costs $1899. God damn. I walked out with their CX1 bagless vacuum cleaner :lol (By the way, the cat and dog model is $250 off until October 8, and adds on a 5 year warranty!)

So I went directly into BestBuy station square today, spoke to the appliance manager who came with me to the GeekSquad section to speak with their manager

The ducking clowns in store basically phone the same line customers do and explain the same thing I have written down on my timeline. Turns out my case was closed by BB, was never informed, no email, nothing

So she gets them to reopen it and tries to get me to leave saying she will follow up. I wait until she hears back from the, presumably, offshore geeksquad manager on the phone.

She then tells me to wait another 3-5 business days LOL, you ducking useless peons..this is now the 4th time I’ve been told to wait 3-5 days and it’s now been 26 days since first being told to wait 1-3

Next time it’s just straight to the GM/Store manager and start yelling...at least on my way out some clown was trying to up sell a woman on all the geek squad shit for a computer she was looking at and I interrupted them and told her straight up do not buy from here, it’s insanely bad service etc. And she walked on a $1400 computer lol..

The stove in my rental unit broke, burner won't turn on. Whirlpool electric range just over 12months old, we bought extended warranty thru trail whose warranty provider is comerco and comerco repair agent is transglobal. They have us booked for end of October, until then the tenant is out of 2 main burners on their stove.

Goggle searched both comerco and transglobal turned up quite a few negative reviews. Did some research and found that there aren't any rules or regulations on a reasonable time frame that a company has to come and service an item under warranty. So technically speaking, they could schedule you in in 3 months time and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

Imagine you have a leaking fridge or washing machine and have to wait that long to get it serviced.

Anyway, for me next time I purchse any extended warranty on big item,I would definitely do my research on who the warranty provider/service agent is before considering.

So i go into BestBuy today because somone finally called me back to say its now at the store level and to come in to pick the range i want to exchange for.

I go in and speak with customer service, she pulls out the claim slip, and the exchange is approved for a "White Westinghouse" Range for the amount of $438.. a Range i purchased around the same time, however was on a completely different receipt, and which i never once mentioned in this 3.5 months of waiting, nor was it the model the service tech from Trans Global came to my home and inspected...the Kitchenaid range in question was $2600 :rukidding:

Cant tell if this is just an attempt to not accept my claim, or it's just so fucked up beyond repair in their system now with different receipts etc. nothing will ever come of it.. the second she showed me that page with the WestingHouse range i couldnt do anything but laugh

I spoke with the Manager of the entire store as well as the manager for appliances and have forwarded her my time line for this.. going on 4 months

if it was within 12 months, on its original warranty, then the experience should different, right? Does Trail service anything themselves? I thought they did...but maybe not

FYI for everyone reading this, Costco appliances comes with 2 years manufacturer warranty instead of the standard 1

Thanks for the tip on the Costco warranty. I did not know this. The price also includes delivery and installation, and haul away. The Maytag washer dryer I have at my place is pretty beat up, and not worth repairing (costs more than the damn units themselves now) so I'm going to replace my washer/dryer sooner than anticipated in preparation for my renovation.

correct. I've noticed that pretty much all appliances cost the same everywhere, and they all change prices all exactly the same time, just like gas. They are probably controlled by the same distributor, and "regular" prices do go up and down.

There will be the odd extra 10% off here or hidden discounts that you can take advantage of, but the posted prices are always within $5 of each other. Example, home depot/lowes will be $5 cheaper than trail, best buy etc, and Costco.ca will 0.01 less than Home Depot, but include free white gloves delivery + haul away + 2 years warranty.

Also, Costco's extended warranty of 3 years, which brings total coverage to 5 years, will always be cheaper as well. The only thing I have no clue on is when you need that extra warranty, what hoops will you have to go through?

One last thing, if you want a Bosch dishwasher or fridge, Perkopolis is the way to go! 30% off and free delivery (although only to your door and not inside). Fridge is additional 10% off right now, so the 800 series dual compressor fridge mentioned earlier is only $26XX instead of $38XX. Hot! Too bad you have to wait 30-45 days for stock, but still a great savings.

Which models do you have? I'm curious because there are some scorching reviews (pun intended) where people absolutely HATE the dryer, claiming it never dries clothes properly, and that their clothes are still too wet, or come out damp, and have to be dried again.

I am sure there are two sides to the story, and I will go out on a limb to assume it is user error (jamming too many clothes in / too heavy of a load etc.) I just got my tankless hot water system and new air handler (furnace) and ripped out the HRV system which was shared with the current dryer, and has been re-routed. My ideal end state is to have the dryer's vent/duct sealed off completely. Any feedback welcome!

Yes, it's as simple as twisting on/off the connecters, but you still need gas permits regardless. If something should ever happen (and heaven forbids something does) and the gas company comes to see there's no permit or tag, say goodbye to any kind of insurance.

Random appliance question, but curious what ppls takes are on Black stainless vs Stainless steel?

There's a fridge we're looking at that has both, and while we like the Black stainless, I am worried it might limit our future ability to match other appliances with the same color.

Are there examples of mixed color appliances between stainless/black stainless, and how does it look?

bcrdukes
02-05-2021, 12:54 PM
There are some funky colours coming out to the market but usually on niche or more baller brands. I did see Black stainless steel for I think it was Samsung (I could be wrong.) I think you should be okay for a fridge but also have to consider your overall design aesthetic. I mean, imagine having a pink or baby blue fridge and the whole room is like dark gothic. Got some clash there. lol

Edit (Sorry, hit submit prematurely) - What I wanted to say was there was a house where I saw a stainless steel black fridge and the dishwasher was regular stainless steel and the range was black. The dishwasher stood out big time but I think it would really bother one of you let it bother you and sat there and stared at it all day.

sonick
02-05-2021, 12:58 PM
Nah if anything we'll stick with the stainless steel not any other funky color. Just wondering if having a mix of black stainless vs standard stainless would look weird.

I personally wouldn't go mix and match. Havnt seen many sample photos of kitchens with different colour appliances.

Hondaracer
02-09-2021, 12:33 PM
Imo the look wouldn’t be as jarring if the black stainless is grouped.

Ie. you’ve got a black stainless fridge and dish on the same wall but the range is regular stainless on a different wall/island. What really catches the eye is when things are side by side and different

My parents wall oven has called it quits and they've been shopping for a new one. It's been a struggle because of covid shipping delays. Stock is limited and a lot of it is back ordered or requires a special order.

Most likely they'll go with a Miele, but that's partially due to the fact they can get one without a 8 - 12 week wait.

Just a heads up for anyone if you think you might need appliances soon.
