e-scooter suggestion

I'm switching work that requires a short commute from home (about 7km). I'm using this as an excuse to get myself an e-scooter so that I have more options beside driving or cycling.
Any e-scooter experts able to help me pick between the Segway Ninebot ES2, Xiaomi M365 or a used iNokim light 2?

I wouldn't say I'm any sort of expert here but I've been using my Xiaomi M365 for about a year now and I love it! Takes me about 8mins to ride to work. As long as the weather is nice I ride. It's great not having to worry about finding parking and I've saved enough money on gas that it's basically paid for itself!

Where did you purchase the M365?

I picked up a Xiaomi M365 (non-pro version) from Craigslist used condition when Covid started. Brand new at the time on Amazon was asking $700 I recall, now don't know what they go for new. Range is adequate for within short commutes around (30KM range), you just gotta ride smart too such as when going down hill, no throttle and let scooter regen the battery to extend some extra juice range. I flashed a new firmware on mines, so now the thing rips LOL (haven't seen battery compromise such it depletes faster).

K, for those of you that e scoot, do you ride on the sidewalk or the bike lane? Frankly, some of you, not saying you specifically, are dangerous!

That's true. but the whole micro mobility trend is pushing some municipalities to amend their street use bylaws to allow for e-scooters on bike lanes and routes.

Depends on the model. Some have 250 watt motors others have 5000+ watt motors.

It depends on the street for me. If it's inside residential street, I ride on the street/sidewalk (there is normally barely traffic at once whether vehicle or pedestrian). If it's a busy area, I just hop off and don't ride and walk the scooter along until it's more "clear" before riding again. It really comes down to common sense.

i had a conversation with a guy who spotted me with my scooter. this guy rides from kerrisdale to richmond for work! his top speed is 60km/hr but he told me he's only doing 45km/hr because he doesn't have a helmet yet lol..... friggin intense.
My M365 has a top speed of 26km/hr and that's plenty imo. Not trying to get hit by a car here :lol

Given that it is technically illegal, how likely would someone get ticketed for riding one? Remember, some of us live in Vancouver, and we all know how much we love the VPD traffic divisions.

CoV was supposed to discuss allowing for an e-scooter sharing pilot project to take place a few months ago, but I haven't been able to follow through on how the proposal went. Also, even if that e-scooter sharing program is allowed, there is no indication that personal e-scooters will be allowed as well.
For all the tooting that CoV does to claim itself as the greenest city blah blah blah, keeping e-scooters illegal is just beyond stupid and hypocritical.

I think the problem is, when you slam into my car on your scooter and scratch the shit out of IT, what am I suppose to do, pin you down until the cops come? How can you ensure people are liable for the damages they cause.
I saw a guy in New West that had an electric motor cycle that looked like a full sized crotch rocket, full plastic fairings etc. That is a vehicle for the street. Just because it’s electric and you’ve got some stupid “this is an e-bike” liscence plare doesn’t make it any less of a vehicle that may do damage to mine.
With that said scooters look pretty fun..can you get a DUI on a scooter? Lol

I've been in some USA cities (Austin, San Diego) with e-scooter sharing programs and it's a fucking nightmare... scooters just tossed all over the place on sidewalks and wherever else and people get on them and just ride the shit out of them and go in front of cars and stuff.
And you can tell people have had it with them even after a few months, I got on one just for a few minutes to try it out and circled around the driveway of a hotel parking lot and some guy driving a taxi was like "Watch where you're fucking going" even tho I was nowhere near him hahaha... the anger was tangible.

This Segway e-scooter/moped thing looks pretty sweet, I had my eye on it... even though I can't see myself ever contributing to one of these indiegogo campaigns.

Man, the Limes and Bird e-scooters were everywhere in Austin, LA, and San Diego. It was neat at first to witness and try first hand, but I can imagine how frustrating it can be when they're just dumped all over the place recklessly. Montreal got rid of their pilot program after people complained and got fed up with them. It was fun while it lasted.

I rode in Vancouver a lot during summer, saw VPD all the time. As long as you aren't doing something stupid, they don't seem to care. E.g. Riding reckless full throttle/weaving in and out etc. Also if one is worried, can just say were "manually" pedaling the scooter with one leg LOL. There's not enough resources or time to enforce this type of stuff at this point.

San Diego is where I first rode! It was so damn FUN! The gf and I rode together on one scooter haha. It was sketchy af but fucking hilarious and a ton of fun to do. I had to get one once I got home lol. And yes, an absolute eye sore on the city with the way they're strewn about. But getting around that area with all the museums (I can't recall the name) with the scooter was definitely the way to go. So much quicker between destinations.
E-bikes are perfectly legal, as stated above somewhere, but also WAY more expensive. For the time being, e-scooters are only legal in parks and trails. So far though, no one seems to care. Heck, the officers at the hospital see me all the time. They've never said a word to me.

I have a dyu e bike that I use in the summer, pretty good if you don't have to go uphill. About 20 km range. I think my max speed down hill was like 31 kmh and it started feeling sketch

What's the reason why ebikes are legal but scooters aren't?
spoon.ek9

because e-bikes are given the same rights as regular bikes. no other reason than that.

I get weirded out by the Fantuan drivers.... they’re on ebikes in Richmond but they ride them in traffic with the cars. That’s incorrect in my opinion.

^ then when it is to their advantage, they will ride up a sidewalk. And then again, into a bike lane. But hey, someone is getting their friggin pork chop over rice take out in record time and nice and hot.

Wouldn't that be the same if a bicycle hit you too? None of them have insurance and they all play victim.
Anyways I bought an e-bike because its more stable and versatile than a scooter. It goes 40km/h vs a scooter 26km/h. For work I choose e-bike for leisure i choose the e-scooter.
You shouldn't get hassle by a cop if you're not riding like an asshole.
I think we all should be supportive of all these electric personal vehicles because its one less car on the road and better for the environment.

I am leaning towards a scooter lately because our work and residential area has seen increasing bike thief over the past year. The benefit of a scooter is that I can fold it up and tuck it in my desk or home.
There's a group buy for the M365 in December if anyone is interested: https://discord.com/channels/739555365888458802

^ Don't forget to get the seat post accessory! Make it into a motorcycle while you're at it. Some riding with no helmet, gloves, or in their suits. These are just disasters waiting to happen ... 60kms/hr ??!!
