lol, so MG1 was right on all fronts.

I called still creek Costco at 6:30am, they said they got 8 in but there were already more people in line than units and she said to not bother coming down.

Called Brighton, they got 44 units, so I went with the MIL, got there at 7:15am. There were probably 25 people ahead of us. Then 7:30ish, guy from Costco comes out and starts handing tickets, we get ticket #16. I looked ahead and there were a couple of younger people who didn't get a ticket. One guy admitted he was 58 and also didn't get one.

That said, kudos to Costco, of the 44 units they received they kept aside a portion for people who couldn't get in at 8am, so not everyone wasted their time.

That said, I saw 2 different people go to the ACs when we were waiting to collect, demanding they also get one. They were yelling at employees who were trying to explain people lined up much earlier than them, but they would not listen. I felt terrible for the employees. Entitlement has no age restriction, SMH.

There's a huge thread on RFD about these Danby units, most people are actually lauding the thing. The costco online reviews aren't great though, you're right. I think I'll venture out to get one, 12,000 BTU SACC for $500 is not a bad deal.

Is the SACC for $500 the best for that price range? My research leads me back to the costco double house Danby one, which I'm planning to pick up before the smoke arrives to Vancouver. Since I'll probably need an air purifier too.

I think so, the Danby one is a rebranded Midea unit, which retails for $629. There's a couple single hose units that do outperform double hose ones, so don't get toooo hung up on the single/double thing.

This particular 'double hose' is two hoses in one so there may be a drop in efficiency.

I would think a bigger plane that needs a longer runway/higher minimum speed might also have the same requirements when filling up with water? That might eliminate some of the smaller lakes from being used.

Having a couple big mofos, whatever they may be, in Kelowna is probably a good idea though.

I was under the assumption these 747 tankers were more widely used after watching a few YouTube videos on them but that wiki article seems to lend itself to there not being very many.

I’d probably think of these were to be used they would have to be filled on the ground as opposed to picking up water from lakes. Edit* yeap, on the ground:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NjCHXNHE6QE

But one of them can hold 6 times as much as a regular bomber..

Probably just wishful thinking but if there was ever a time to consider somthing like this, now is the time

Conair is one of my clients, sitting on the beach at Skaha we watched an endless stream of their little fire planes coming and going from the Penticton airport.

Business is booming.

Got a quick question. Can you connect the exhaust hose from a portable AC unit to the dryer duct? I know it’s not just exhaust, but if the duct is pretty much straight out the side of the house, is it doable? It’s too hot to think about it, but HVAC people have answer?

Totally, yes you can!

Edit: I'll add, your typical dryer vent is 4", and AC vent hose is usually around 6" so you're going to have to MacGyver up an adaptor (or use lots of duct tape) but it should be fine.

Mon Dieu, I can make adapter to fit those magnetic connectors. That way I can quickly change over to dryer. Not that I would use a dryer this time of year. Sun dried boxers, ftmfw!

Actually, take that back, natural gas dryer, ftmfw!

I read that connecting into your dryer vent could cause whatever you're connecting to it to clog up with dust, or help grow mould

I've no idea tho, I was reading on HVAC forums when I was thinking up ideas on how/where to exhaust my mining rigs

298 units and going down. I bought this in store, and will easily pay the extra $20 for shipping as the box weighs ~90 lbs.

07-07-2021, 06:29 PM
Someone was saying a single hose unit outperforms a 2 hose unit
The ONLY time this is true, is if the single hose unit has larger actual BTU. Just because it says 12k, does not mean its actually 12k.
Not only are single hose massively less efficient, they also cost you more to cool the same amount a 2 hose would.

Two hose units > single hose unit

Why? Welp, go down the rabbit hole of hvac theory

Agreed! Bought it before the heatwave happened. You just have to be careful with the included window panel adapters. They are a bit too short for a full sized patio door and very flimsy.

I ended up attaching two pieces of aluminum track to lock all three pieces together and custom cut a piece of plexiglass to fully seal the patio door.

The app is a bit hokey and you need stable WIFI signal for it to work well. But man once it work, you can't go back to a timer based AC unit. Control temp from your phone ftw!

It cools fine (rather well actually, although it's not that hot outside), and it's the quietest AC I've had, so I'm rather impressed.

I asked the same question on RFD and others have said it's the same, so it may be by design...but it's such a strange design choice. I mean if most people have the same 'issue' it may not be an issue at all?

some pretty bad reviews on costco website for this unit

Honestly, online reviews aren't the best for accuracy.

I assume most people are like me that if I like the product, I'm not going to review it.

So you end up with people who don't like it and basically rag on it for everything. These are the same people who won't be happy unless it's a portable AC that weighs less than 5lbs, that can cool a 600sqft room in less than 5mins, is completely silent, while not consumer more electricity than a cellphone charger.

I'd also say people with too high of an expectation of a portable AC.

First off, as far as I know, portable ACs are going to be loud, regardless of brand or model. Some people might be more sensitive to noise than others, but unfortunately it's pretty common across the board.

Secondly is that for the BTU output and energy they use, portable ACs just aren't very efficient compared to window ACs or central air.

Also when they say its 'portable', it's not really that portable in that you can easily switch it from room to room.

I think it's pretty pointless for people to complain about it if their alternative is not having an AC.

Hondaracer
07-08-2021, 11:22 AM
It’s like a dishwasher. If you’re spending bottom dollar for an AC expecting it to be quiet, you’re out to lunch.

The difference in pricing for dishwashers that have like a 15 decibel difference is $400-700

So many variables when it comes to cooling a room they should almost have a strict no return policy on all of them

I have got Danby 14000 BTU, During the heat wave days 41-42c, We had temp set at 17c, but room temp will only go down to 27-29c.

Maybe i am comparing it to the ones my family has back in Taiwan.
During Summer in Taiwan, 34-36c most the days. Those wall hanging ACs are so strong. I remember i even had to turned it off during night time or set it at 21c.
And they are super super super quiet!!!

They are cheap too!!!
Not sure if i can get one and install it here.

also if you're house insulation is terrible its not going to keep the Cold air in so much while blocking whats outside.

i notice installing inside "trailers" that in summer months it feels like a heat box inside and portable is barely passable vs a newer up to date house.

Now that temperatures have gone down, the next potential problem area might be water shortage. We are blessed with mountains and glaciers, but if it doesn't rain in the next few weeks, the watersheds and reservoirs may dry up enough to warrant stricter water restrictions. Don't see any rainfall in the forecasts for at least two weeks, and we've been dry at least two weeks before this. At least here in the GVRD.

For anyone with a mini-split in Vancouver, what brand do you have and what's your opinion on them? Has anyone gotten any quotes for Mini-Splits recently? Math aint that simple, but yes, a 14k should cool a 250sqft room no problem.

1: most likely the Unit is broken
2: Your windows or door are open
3: You turn on the unit at 7pm when you get home, needs to operate 24/7, with doors/windows closed.
Turning it on when you get home, and its 40c inside the room, with all the furniture / walls at 40c, will do no help.
Air conditioners are designed to maintain temperature at its rated BTU. "Pulling down" a room at 40C, is a completely different animal

Hand sanitizers will add to that problem (maybe even the major cause of skin irritation)......... gotta love that sting you get when you put hand sanitizer on your cracked fingers.

I’ve had mild eczema for the past ten years or so on a couple fingers. The right pinky, the skin between the pinky and ring finger and the section behind my right thumb. Usually it’s triggered by harsh soaps (i.e. public soap dispensers), chemicals when i worked on my cars and now hand sanitizers. I think the hand washing orientation allows soap to naturally flow downwards towards the pinky and maybe I’m in a rush and don’t rinse it all sometimes? Same with hand sanitizers running down the hand.

I also use glysomed nightly on those spots and if I get lazy and miss a couple nights it usually flares up a little. I had topical steroid cream prescribed in my twenties but I found it made the skin thinner, although it was effective. Now I wear cotton glove liners inside work gloves if I’m doing garden work or working on the car. Helps a little against abrasion and chemicals and also because the sweat inside the glove also seems to trigger it.

For me, its been happening since last year. I am in my early 30s.

Do you think its due to coffee or sleeping late at night etc ?

Any hand lotion you are using now ?

My family doctor suggested glysomed which worked before but it doesn't seem to cure during the hotter days last month.

Thanks for the input !

I am using Vaseline "dry skin repair" (yellow bottle) during the afternoon and glysomed during morning and night times.

I wear those thin rubber gloves for work also and sweat seems to irritate it also.

Strange thing is, my left hand is completely fine though

Which hand do you use for your...late night activities?

I found Glaxal works a lot better than normal moisturizers. The doctor recommended it for my kids and it works great on them too. I find the stuff in the round tub is less greasy than the stuff in the squeeze tube, but the tube spreads easier.

Im too dumb to know the reasons for it, who really knows....

I can say for sure, mine gets worse in winter.
When i was in australia for 5 months, i did not have to use cream at all, once i came back, like clockwork it showed up.
Maybe its raincouver :troll::fuckthatshit::derp:

I just use whatever my doctor prescribes me, im assuming it varies case by case.
Usually covered by bc medical, maybe cost me an extra 5$ or something.

anyone experience dry fingers with blisters in them recently due to the heat ?

I also have dry skin peeling off on 3 fingers and cracks on the skin near the finger tips

anyone experiencing this also ?

I am using glysomed (green bottle) to handle this

any other lotions I should try ?

Started 10 yrs ago only on 1 finger. as time went on, it's slowly spread. 10 yrs later, it's on 4 fingers now. GP said it's ezcema. looking it up online, might be mild Hydrosis. flares up when season changes, and from irritants.

Recent heat might be making hands more sweaty/clammy, so acting up more. I've noticed it as well. In fact, i've seen a couple spots up the hand/arm these past weeks.

Things I do:
-use hydrating soap
-Eucerin hand cream for when it acts up
-lotion to moisturize when dry, but watch what you use, cause it might end up irritating the skin and making it worse
-if it gets itchy, do your best not to scratch, cause that'll also make it worse

I use Vaseline Extremely Dry Skin Rescue, but this is only for when the skin is dry/cracked. For the eczema, you'll want something to deal with it specifically.

Also same for me, left hand is generally fine.

sorry i may have been misinformed, i recall some folks in our sustainability group mention dual hose units are more efficient than the single hose portable ac units and more costly. 'yes' to 'works better' is probably a very generic response to a generic question.

please correct me if i'm wrong.

Dual hose by design are better/more 'efficient', depending on your definition of efficient.

Both systems bring in hot air from the room, cool it down, and expel it back in the room. The heat is exhausted outside. The difference is that dual hose units also draw air in from the outside, which exclusively cools the condenser. Because of this, air from the room goes into the room, and air from the outside goes back outside, resulting in a neutral pressure system.

Single hose units, because it's taking air from the room, but some of it is being spat outside through the hose, creates negative pressure. Which means it's going to draw air from somewhere else, most likely hot air from the outside, resulting in 'poorer' performance. So it's taking air, cooling it down, some of which gets exhausted, and then you're cooling it again because it's getting drawn in.

That's a quick summary - but there are studies of single hose units outperforming dual hose units either because of better design, etc. For a similarly rated AC, dual hose will cost more, yes - but not all dual hoses are more expensive (or better) than all single hoses.

Now, all that being said, if it's hot as fuck and the only AC available is single hose, then fuck yes just get that one. I see people on RFD be like I'm just gonna swelter in the heat because I can't get a dual hose one. That's just silly.

So, investigations into the cause of the wildfires in and around Lytton has not been finalized yet, but there's a distinct possibility it was caused by a railcar(s). I was just wAndering, with all this technology we have nowadays, could we not have some system in place where railcars built to hold liquids can supply much needed water to places that need it to fight wildfires? I'm sure someone has thought about this already. Anyway, each town along the corridor can have these cars at the ready on a side track ready to be deployed at a moment's notice. I guess the engines will have to be modified to handle the situation. The story "sparked" my curiosity, but too lazy to look any information up. Actually, need to go galavanting.

I have the new dual hose costco, and a 12K single from costco a few years ago.

When the heat was at it's peak, the dual hose was blowing much warmer air than the single hose. Usually, the dual hose room is cooler, but when its 45 outside.. different story.

Operating temps are a thing.

Hmm, that's interesting - At the peak I had an old Whynter 14K dual hose and a random LG 8K single hose, and the Whynter was definitely cooler/stronger...but also the rating is significantly higher.

My biggest surprise from my initial setup was the amount of negative pressure the single hose produced. I had those casement window zipper hose outlet thing, and the negative pressure was ripping velcro out, it was crazy.

Six weeks at least without any decent amount of rainfall in the Lower Mainland and probably nothing for at least another two. I keep seeing forecasts of possible rain, but they turn out to be zero the next day.

^I wish that was true.

Just came back from the cabin on Lillooet Lake.

Strawberry Point had the worst mosquitoes I've seen in 15+ years going out to the cabin.

The rapid heatwave created a massive glacier melt that has essentially flooded the lake. Water level is extremely high with stagnant water, this created the worst mosquito apocalypse I've ever seen there.

It was fucked, literal clouds of those fuckers. We could only hit the lake twice in the whole week there, each time was a bum rush from the banks on floaties into the middle of the lake to escape them.

My ass cheeks look like I caught some type of STD, shit was stressful.

If this is the future of climate change with the combination of early fire bans, camping/cabin life is going to be shit going forward.

Thats twice now I’ve noticed you point out how “tough” your job is. I know plenty enough people in HVAC to know that you’re likely very well compensated for a job that really isn’t that difficult at the end of the day. Sure it might suck during these recent and uncommon heatwaves, but you chose your profession and I’m sure you’re laughing 8-9+ months out of 12 here in BC.

For the record, my toesies were cold af while I was mashing my keyboard today. Central AC at home though :awwyeah:

Interestingly I just saw a video of an installer carry up a compressor up a ladder and he dropped it about 10ft and it smashed into the ground.

I'm not sure what the correct way to do that is, but I don't think he was supposed to just carry it up himself?

I bought a PM2.5/10 meter (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B076F54XG8) to measure the difference of AQ between indoors and outdoors, and to see how effective the air purification strategy is working. We're using a MERV13 filter taped to a box fan, and it's great to see PM2.5 quantified and on the decrease. A measurement on the balcony an hour ago showed 199 ug/m³. Inside is currently 18 ug/m³ and falling.

I was at the laundromat this morning. Nice AC and no smoke smell inside. When I got outside mid afternoon, that wall of sticky heat just about killed me. When I drove off, I started coughing from the shitty air. I rolled up the windows and started up the AC. Damn, the carbon activated cabin air filter I replaced last month really works. Coughing stopped and I felt much better. Being an electric drive, my range would take a hit, but it really didn't kill it as much as I thought it would. I charge at the laundromat for free, so it was a bonus. As soon as it got really cold, I would shut it off until it got warm again.

I would imagine those lucky bastards with a Tesla would not smell a thing.

i really don't get how they measure the humidity, it's always way higher than what the 3 hygrometers I have in my apartment are. I have 3 diff branded ones in diff areas of the room/s.

they all show currently 44-46% relative humidity, but that website says it's 93. my phone app says 92... which is measured at the airport, which is ... where I am.

can someone clarify...

like wouldn't 92% basically almost be raining or have sweat dripping down the walls? or that feeling u get when you walk into an indoor swimming pool?

my windows are open as well, if I close them my relative humidity goes up about 8-10% to 55ish...

I know if I boil water on the stove/cook for a while, and the windows start to sweat, and the room feels warm and wet, the relative humidity goes up to 70-80.

how is it possible outside is 93% when it doesn't feel anywhere close to that...

If I move my hygrometers outside, they def wont read 93...

"relative humidity" is what weather reports use. It's measured outdoors and is a formula based on the temperature as well.. So if you're measuring humidity indoors it's going to be quite different

Ulic Qel-Droma

right... temp is a factor...

im going to move my hygrometer outside right now LOL...

edit: yeah so after about 25min... it stabilized at around 72%.

I guess naturally the brain is trying to anchor it down to absolute humidity.

hud 91gt

Humidity is a relative number to the temperature. If you can put a number to it, it may be easier to understand.

Outside it’s 10 degrees. Relative humidity is 100%. So let’s say, at 10 degrees per parcel of air, it can hold 10 parcels of water. You take that same 10 degree air, and 10 parcels of water into your house and heat it up. You now have 20 degree air holding 10 parcels of water (more or less, let’s ignore anything evaporated within the household as your air is heated). So your relative humidity inside your house is much lower then outside.

When the outside air temperature is higher then the air inside your house, I suspect your RH is much closer to what the weather channel says. But saying that. Your furniture, and items in the house all have ability to soak in moisture so it’s not going to be completely the same. That would be my take on it at least.

There are a few ways to deal with product, and every company is different.

Lots of items are destroy for credit, which is exactly what it sounds like. Many are RTV or return to vendor. We usually get a high% back on those. There are salvage, which are usually sold to stores like sams club? Or if you remember XS Cargo. Then you have companies like Lego that give you nothing.

So all those people who speculatively buy 10 of the $500 Lamborghini lego sets hoping to make money, but don’t, so they return 8 of them? Yepp we eat that $4000

The percentage of people who abuse the return policy is small. And like hondaracer said. There’s also the companies that will eat the entire cost, because that 0.001% of members who return stuff is a drop in the bucket versus getting your products sold in costco

Edit: and don’t forget, we keep records of *everything* and can (and have) cancel your membership at any time for abusing it. You return 3 MacBooks, a gopro, a kayak, a tent, a tv after football season, we can refuse it and tell you to get stuffed.

Surplus Sam's is one, south Burnaby (about 5 minutes towards the river from Market Crossing).

I went a few times for shits and giggles, they range from 20 to 50% off retail, some items are even unopened.

It's cool to go check out because they do have a lot of stuff, but you have to dig around, the selection changes weekly, and it's a case of buyer beware because I'm fairly certain everything is final sale.

I went to Sams in Burnaby a month ago. Not worth checking out. They had at least 2 dozen dewalt fans on sale for more than they were selling for at costco. They also broke up the 3 can pack of Gumout brake parts cleaner and were selling the induvidual cans for $9 each I think, crazy. The prices for everything on the ground level were out to lunch, some clothing upstairs was correctly surplus priced.

Not really worth the visit, until they realize they have a bunch of junk and price it accordingly.

Necro bump for a related article:
https://www.castanet.net/news/BC/361251/Last-summer-s-heat-wave-in-B-C-caused-bees-to-ejaculate-to-death

TLDR: The heat was so intense that drone bees' sex organs exploded from their bodies.

Bees can’t sweat. So when a record-breaking heat wave hit in late June 2021, drones fled their colonies in search of water — some descending on the burlap sack-covered kiddie pools dotting Emily Huxter’s Armstrong, B.C., farm.

At over 200 beats per second, the bees’ wings would have helped cool their tiny bodies as they desperately lugged water back to their colonies. Somewhere along the way, an untold number didn’t make it.

That morning, Huxter went out into her yard to check on her petite livestock. Dead drones everywhere, she remembers. In the grips of heat stress, their sex organs had exploded out of their bodies. The bees had ejaculated to death.

“It was unbelievable,” said Huxter, recounting the scene. “They have got all of their man parts out.”

Huxter called two beekeeping family members, who confirmed they were finding the same dead drones in awkward death poses.

Then she checked on roughly 300 starter hives where she rears queens, each worth hundreds of dollars. About 70 per cent were dead or missing.

“We had incredible losses. It was really scary,” she said. “Then we were like, ‘Oh my gosh, what's happening?’”

Huxter called up University of British Columbia researcher Alison McAfee, who as a post-doctoral student at the BeeHIVE Research Centre, had run experiments on how bees respond to heat. At 40 degrees Celsius, McAfee explained, heat stress affects a bee's ability to mate; by 42 C, at least half of drones have been found to spontaneously ejaculate and die for some reason experts haven’t figured out.

Within weeks, climate scientists found the heat wave that scorched B.C. and the U.S. Pacific Northwest was made 150 times more likely due to climate change; by the 2040s, its record temperatures could return every five to 10 years.

Such extreme heat threatens more than bees or the honey they produce. The Armstrong bee farm is part of a network of beekeepers that provide pollination services for crops worth an estimated $5 billion a year in Canada.

Every year, Huxter drives her colonies across the Okanagan Valley, helping to pollinate cherry, apple and plum trees from near the U.S. border in Osoyoos up to Vernon.

A second-generation beekeeper, Huxter’s farm also rears queens for other beekeepers across Canada, helping to backfill the winter losses colonies experience every year in the Prairies or Ontario.

It’s all part of a push to make the industry more self-sufficient and wean Canadian beekeepers off queens imported from places like Australia or the United States.

Rising temperatures, said Huxter, is threatening that vision. So after the June losses, the beekeeper thought to herself, “How can we do things better?”

During the heat wave, desperation had driven Huxter to layer polystyrene (brand name Styrofoam) on top of the hive boxes. Other beekeepers she knew had tried adding sugar syrup to the hives, which would ostensibly evaporate and cool the colony.

“I thought, ‘Hmm, I wonder if that's a good idea or not?” Huxter told Glacier Media.

A month later, in the lead up to another heat wave, Huxter decided it was time to figure out what was the best way to protect her buzzing livestock. She reached out to McAfee to help design an experiment.

McAfee suggested running six starter hives with two-inch-thick pieces of polystyrene insulation on top to protect them from the sun. Huxter suggested giving another six hives a steady drip of sugar syrup. A third group got nothing.

Next, Huxter installed temperature loggers McAfee had sent her in each of the hives as well as one on a nearby solar panel to record ambient air temperature.

From July 28 to Aug. 9, they recorded temperatures in the hives every 10 minutes.

Over that 12-day period, the outside ambient temperatures climbed to 35.5 C. But inside the hives, internal temperatures ranged from 14.5 C to 41.5 C, with the highest temperatures found in the untreated hives.

When she went to analyze the data, McAfee found the syrup-fed hives reduced average daily high temperatures by 1.1 C, a difference she described as “not significant” in the beekeeper industry newsletter “Hivelights.”

The polystyrene cover, on the other hand, dropped average daily highs by 3.8 C, a “significant reduction.”

“It actually made the difference of having dangerous temperatures inside the hive to bringing it down below that threshold,” McAfee told Glacier Media.

Since then, Huxter has redesigned all of her hives with two-inch polystyrene lids, a cheap and simple solution that helps the bees get through the winter too.

Both McAfee and Huxter doubt the insulation will be enough to protect bee colonies from the kind of extreme heat wave seen at the end of June.

“It’s one step towards getting better at managing the colonies under these extreme conditions that we should really only expect to increase in the future,” said McAfee.

Both women agree they need to keep experimenting, not least of all with alternative insulation materials that are more environmentally friendly.

“Maybe it's doing that trapped air, you know, like a wood-air-wood sandwich-type idea,” speculated Huxter, who is also looking to reach out to Australian beekeepers to understand how they adapt their colonies to extreme temperatures.

And while the sugar syrup didn’t show a large effect on the mini hives, it might still help the more mature colonies.

In some ways, water is going to matter more as temperatures climb: find the right distance to a lake or pond and bees can reach its waters to stay cool in the summer and get just enough of its cooling effect in the spring.

For now, Huxter is hoping Styrofoam and her network of kiddie pools will protect her young queens and drones across her farm’s 30 colony sites.

Over the last several decades, beekeeping has faced a number of challenges, from the arrival of pathogens and pests into Canadian colonies to poor nutrition.

“They have all these other problems. And climate change hasn't really been considered to be a major challenge for them in the past,” said McAfee.

That's because bees are good at staying warm. On Huxter’s farm, the colonies regularly raise internal hive temperatures from -20 C to 18 C to survive Armstrong’s frigid winters. But as increasingly hot and dry summers take hold, cooling down a colony is more difficult.

“They're not designed to do that as well,” said Huxter.

As a warming planet threatens food systems across the world, beekeepers like Huxter are looking to fight back with their own adaptations. Their success will be a crucial factor determining how much fresh food British Columbians see on their grocery store shelves.

“We're trying to transition in B.C. to being a self-sustaining industry,” she said. “And that's going to be really difficult as temperatures rise.”

Drones are all females.. Male bees stay in the hive and once in a while, one of them gets to fuck once and then die.

Necro bump bcos I want to stay ahead of the game:

I am buying a portable AC unit this year after getting roasted by last year's heat dome. Portable bcos I want to be able to roll it around the house during different times of the day.

Looking at specs now, and the big question for me is -- how loud (ie. in dB rating) is loud? I only know 78 dB is whisper quiet for a car exhaust, but I can't imagine it being the same when it is an AC unit humming 5' away from me.

i have 2 AC machines, my window AC is rated at 56db on highest but i find that loud and im used to sleeping with sound machines on cause of my kids. my portable ac is super loud to the point where i pre chill my room 1-2hrs in advance then turn it off or else i dont think id be able to sleep properly with it on. IMO i dont think u will be rolling ur portable AC around because getting the window setup and sealed properly for the AC hose to attach to it takes time. I only moved my AC once from my bedroom to the living because i had people over and i didnt want them to die from the heat.

I would lower your expectations on how portable these are. In my experience it would be a huge pain in the ass to be frequently moving it from one room to another, given its weight as well as the need to setup the exhaust hose every time.

I would agree with this. My portable AC barely even kept my apartment cool during the heat done. If you have the option, I would look into a mini-split/heat pump.

Buy a window unit if you can. Cheaper, more efficient, quieter. (Those of you in stratas, check your bylaws, alot of them do not allow window units, they are a hazard since they are never installed properly)

In regards to noise, if I'm not mistaken, every 10db higher the rating is, the noise doubles.

50dba = noise
60dba = 2xnoise of 50dba
70dba = 4xnoise of 50dba

AC units need to be sized properly. You cant just buy a unit and expect it's going to cool.
What does this mean? Go on Google, and research BTU of cooling required, to get yourself a rough idea

Ex. 6 people in 900sqft condo, plus kitchen, plus 4 computers operating, huge south facing windows (30,000btu required)
Vs
2 people in 400sqft condo, plus kitchen, one laptop, small north facing windows. (10,000btu required)

^ as an example, since everyone on here takes comments like facts

Ps, those of you looking at dual vs single hose portables, dual hose units are far superior to single hose units.

Mini split units are the highest end option, far more expensive, but a no brainer if budget and bylaws allow them

the costco dual hose (it's really a big fat one partitioned) weighs about 80lbs, lugging it up/down the stairs is not fun given i'm an office worker that's sat on his ass for 2 years, so i agree, at best you roll it out of your storage room to where ever you want to install it (same floor).

I have a single hose unit from Costco, we push the size of room that it can cool, but it did keep us from dying. We used it in the living room, and a few nights we all slept out here cuz it was sooo hot.

This year I plan to order a second window kit, so we can roll it from the children’s play room during the day over to the living room at night. Don’t think a second AC unit is in the budget this year.

Cue:
It's not silent
It doesn't cool my 140000sqft mansion
I tried to return it after summer and they didn't take it back
It's heavy
It flooded because I didn't tighten the drain and it ruined my hardwood floors
It stopped working (but I forgot to include the part where I dropped it several times lugging it up the stairs)
It doesn't work with my 1947 condo windows that tilt open

Yah pretty much unless you spend $$$$ for top of the line portable ACs, every AC is going to be loud. It's not going to be as effective and efficient as you imagine it to be. It's going to be heavy as fuck and not "portable".

People need to be realistic with their expectations.

Absolutely bang on and the it not really being that portable and heavy is kind of annoying but I have 3 portable ACs, one for the living room, one for the master, and one for my sons room and I've accepted that it's a piece of furniture that's just part of the room year round whether it's used or not. I ain't lugging that thing down 2 flights of stairs and then across the complex then underground to the my storage locker. I can see if someone has it on the main floor and can just dolly that thing straight out into their garage or something but for me fuck that.

I know it's the end of summer when you see all the A/C returns at Costco.

Also, the other week I saw someone return 6-8 boxes of unused procedure and kn95 masks.
