Christine Sinclair is gold, literally. Tied Japan today (or yesterday). 4-0 win for women’s softball against Mexico.

Is it still considered 2020 Tokyo Olympics? If so, mods, please change title.

Mod edit: Changed title to 2020 as requested

Still 2020, can’t afford to rebrand all dat merch..

Although, no fans to buy the merch. I’m pretty pumped but I think this is gonna be another Olympics like Russia that has essentially opposing time zones? Sucks watching replays of stuff to some degree

Locally it's been pretty much a disaster. People are very resistant to it, with protests and anti Olympics graffiti throughout the city. It's one of those weird cases where liberal people and hardcore nationalists agree on a cause. Several athletes and staff have tested positive for covid already, and there has been one rape attempt by a staff (on the day he arrived). They're supposed to be sequestered, but locals have been spotting them at bars and posting them on social media, and a lot of them have dating profiles which is not a good look.

I am actually a bit worried there might be a terrorist attack of some sort. It's been a while since the last one one in Japan, but they weren't uncommon from the 60's all the way through the 90's. The sarin attack in 1995 is the reason why you don't see garbage cans anywhere.

Not so bad, we get to watch the games from like 4pm to 4am (we're 8hrs ahead if u ignore the fact they're a day ahead)

Edit: wait 4am I think the latest sporting event is 8pm right?

Where's the Kimochi Yamete? :ifyouknow:

Here's a fun fact.SeemsGood Kimochi (気持ち)basically translates to just the word "Feeling". You need to add the descriptor iii ( いい)meaning good, to make it mean something. But, it often comes out sounding as just one word so you might say they're just screaming "FEELING! FEELING! FEEELING!" :awwyeah:

Anyways... now that I've possibly ruined something fun for some of ya.
I hear Olympic swag is actually very hard to come by in Japan. Seems like whatever stock they had as of last year at time of cancellation, was what they had and the shut the production lines down to cut their losses.

Many of the stores that were selling the swag have slim pickings. And the online marketplace is bumping with demand outstripping supply. Any dreams that people had of a fire-sale on swag has been dashed. I know I wouldn't mind picking some things up at 75%.

Anyways... now that I've possibly ruined something fun for some of ya.

Fun fact.......... many folk use "anyways," instead of, "anyway." It is believed to have started here in our part of the world and have spread to other communities around the world like a Wuhan bat out of hell. Similar to, "mines," instead of, "mine."

:troll:

The word, "ain't," is now in the dictionary and is almost acceptable. My old English teacher would be rolling in her grave right now..........

Anyways has become so common place, it is accepted as, "colloquial (everyday language)." Anyway..............

Disappointed in cbc for being completely silent when Iran came out, especially considering our huge Iranian population, they had trivia or quips ab the Olympic teams for every country... Iran came out n they were hush until the end, someone decided to say "there's an Iranian playing on the refugee team"

Edit: guess I kinda stand corrected, the correspondents didn't offer any quips for a lot of countries that walked out, but it wasn't just dead air though

Gawd, what’s with announcers. The pronunciation of the Japanese language is pretty simple. There’s five basic vowel sounds. Ten consonants in front of those vowel sounds. That’s it. There is no Long A sound, for example. Okay, there’s one more sound the un as in Kim Jun Un (n) sound.

Te, as in ten. Ri as in Lee (okay, that’s a hard one to get right. It’s between really and leeley). Ya, as in yeah. Ki, as in key. Teriyaki. Not teriyaki as in yakity yak.

I explain it to so many people and they get it right pretty quick.

donk.

London was by far the most expensive games at 11 bn

By the time the Tokyo games are done they are expected to have cost 20..

Vancouver on the other hand was one of the least expensive in recent times and also had some of the smallest cost overruns. Although it is cheaper to host winter than summer

Anyone who has lifted weights knows - there's no way your face looks good when doing it. So they are calling their own athletes "ugly" despite them winning gold medals for their country.

I watched this race and I’ve been trying to understand how big of an upset this is. Apparently other cyclists in the peloton knew but didn’t say anything lol. The mens triathlon was beast. I knew it was grueling but just found out the runners pace around 30 minutes for the final 10k run, AFTER the swim and the bike rice. Can barely keep a 30 minute pace for 5 k alone. Truly astounding what they're able to do. Finish was pretty good too with the lone pull-away.

I don't think I'm well-versed in my pace terminology. 30 mins to run 5k :drunk:. Whatever that works out to be. I don't think thats anything impressive. These guys swam across an ocean and biked stanley park 4X at breakneck speed then ran 10k. Still boggles my mind.

I don't know if it is always played this way, or if this was bad reffing + dirty team... But Fuji is up 21-0 and there's basically no hope for Canada to beat them. That didn't stop them from headbutting and striking at their opponents.. Like not "tough stuff" but actual strikes. Two Canadians were injured, and both looked REALLY bad. First one they didn't catch on camera, but the second one was a headbutt to the shoulder, and she just broke her arm with a dirty headbutt, so it was just hanging as she limped off the field.

Canada scores a 'try' in garbage time.. she's struggling to get the ball over the line, and this girl comes in and just WALLOPS her across the face with her forearm. Surprised she didn't KO her. And that was the end of the game.

It's just gross... Allowing hitting with your head is bad enough in sports with helmets, but why are they letting them do it without them? All while you're up 21-0? No thanks

Edit: Watching Japan vs US now, let's see if these teams are as dirty

Edit: LOL the Americans are like 50% bigger than the other team on average. This doesn't seem fair

But no strikes or headbutts so far SeemsGood

OK rugby isn't so bad, just the Fijian team is

Rugby Sevens is totally different from Rugby Union. Personally, I'm a big a fan of Rugby Union. Those guys are warriors and make NFL players look like a bunch of wusses, but in general is just more tactical. Obviously, the fact that there are less players on the pitch and less time on the clock means the approach will be different to RU.

Why are certain ethnicities naturally better at certain sports? Watching the 100m ladies and no surprise, all the top performers are African/black. Same observation with men.

Why are there hardly any black/African swimmers?

Is it something about their particular physiques?

Might have to change thread title......... It's no longer Tokyo Olympics. It's now Tokioh Olympics.

On a side note, good on Emma Twigg winning gold for New Zealand. This is the 34 year old's fourth Olympics with no gold to show for it. She finally did it! Finished well ahead of the rest.

I was watching the highlights on the CBC app (liking it so far). The women do it again by winning gold in the women's 8 rowing. I listened to our national anthem as our flag was being raised and was like, wth? So tinny sounding - top heavy, no bass or mid bass...... I listened to it more closely the second time around and it is a good rendition. Good choice, Canada. I believe we get to submit the version of the anthem and if it passes the IOC it is played at the Olympics.

As a former band leader, I always liked the Bray, band arrangement. Simple, robust and full without too much flourish. Anyway, did you know the composer of O Canada was a french canadian music teacher......

I have probably only watched about hour total of Olympic coverage so far and I don't think I have seen any men's events. Is it just coincidence on my part or has CBC been showing more women's events?

Mainly because the women have been winning the medals for Canada.

They're going to show who gets the highest ratings, and if the men are winning more, they'll probably get shown more.

Less about ethnicity, and more about physical attributes, environment, training quality. Certain ethnicities have typical traits (but with a range) like commonly tall Dutch people or heavy Pacific Islanders, but with training and everything going right, anyone can win at any time.

Koreans are great archers because they have a strong archery program, not because they're Korean. Canadians do well in ice hockey because it's part of their culture, and many hockey players are all different ethnicities.

On that note. I once met a Kenyan who’s full time gig is competing in various running events all over the world. He did everything from rare obscure races in fuck town nowhere to triathlon in major cities and the Olympic. As long as there is a $ purse to winning he is there.

Running literally life where he is from. He has been running since he was little kid. To and from school, to work, to the market etc. He can run faster than most people he meets in first world country while wearing flip flops. He’s been “training” every day since he was 5. Just like how sports can lift communities out of poverty in North America. My guess is it the same in African countries?

The US Olympic Training Center is already in Colorado Springs, not sure if this is actually new facility or they just arranging a new camp. If this is the case US athletes have been training at "high-ish" altitudes for a while now. Difference being the Kenyans have probably been living at altitude their whole lives.

I read a book once that went into detail about the science between different ethnicities. It also dabbled into some theory.

I’ll probably get this completely wrong, but regarding African ethnicities, the slave trade had apparently a lot to do with the evolution of some of these groups. Travelling across the world in awful conditions, only the strong survived. Then bread over and over again creating the best of the best of the gene pool. I really wish I remember the book. It was incredibly interesting and went into the science of fast twitch muscle fibres and why some areas had more of said fibres then others. I never did research any of it, but it was super interesting none the less.

Edit: it was called “The Sport Gene” by David Epstein.

GOLD!!!!!!

Unconventional training leads to gold

After Western University, where the 31-year-old had been training, shuttered its facilities because of COVID-19, Warner was without a home only nine months before Tokyo.

His coach eventually made an arrangement with the City of London for Warner to continue training at the city's nearly 70-year-old Farquharson Arena.

There, his coach fashioned a makeshift pole vault area, brought in the necessary pads for high jump and cobbled together a ring of discus and javelin.

The arena was 55 metres long, meaning Warner could only run full speed for 40.

"I think that to be a good decathlete, you have to be adaptable because the only certain thing that there is going into a decathlon is that something's going to go wrong," Warner told CBC Sports.

In Tokyo, Warner could do no wrong. Everything he touched turned to gold.

Even more empty because only a portion of the athletes got to stay for the ceremony. If your sport was scheduled to end early, you were sent home already. If you were eliminated earlier on, you were sent home. It was a kind of weird seeing so little people there.

Such a shame the state of hosting these games. All the venues looked amazing some of the road cycling races alone made me want to go to Japan and experience some of the more rural areas etc. Unfortunately I doubt they will even see much of a tourism boost because of the games due to the outside perception of them being a country full of unvaccinated people.

Japan in general seems to have a way of sorting things out but these games could very well be as much as a boon to Japan as Montreal was for Quebec

I loved how the female gymnasts at the Tokyo Olympics paid tribute to the greatest gymnast of all time, Nadia. She set the bar high and her accomplishments spurred on many a girls to do what she did. Back in Nadia's era, there was no social media like we have today. There was pressure, alright, but nothing like what the athletes of today face.

People just can't be nice. Why would you purposely go after an athlete like that? It's not like you could do better, and what's in it for you? You suck, so you get satisfaction by destroying other people's dreams? Sad, sad world we live in.
