Looks like the CFL survived COVID. In pursuit of the Grey Cup. The oldest professional football trophy in North America. This will be the 109th, I believe. Want to see BC Lions engraved on it, hee hee.......... not likely.

Anyway, looking forward to the games. Like I've mentioned before, win or lose, I'll always follow them. This will be the second year without our family friend, Kato, on the sidelines. RIP.

Roar, Lions, ROAR!!

Addendum: This year's Grey Cup game will be held in Kisiskatchewanisipi (Saskatchewan, for you non indigenous guys, lol).

Last season tailgating was not allowed............ just did a search and found this. I imagine it's from years ago

Then, there's Calgary..........

no fun allowed in Vancouver, right. I went to a Stamps game a few years ago,and got right lit before the game, and scarfing down burgers and dogs. John Hufnagel came by and made sure we were having fun, no way that would happen here.

I dearly miss Empire Stadium. Hell, I even miss watching hockey at the Pacific Colosseum. Oh, and baseball at the Nat.

I thought I missed hockey at the PC for awhile after they moved, but it’s actually a pretty abysmal place, especially by todays standards.

I was referring to the atmosphere of those places. Venues have to keep up with the times. Technology, creature comforts, etc. Empire Stadium. The view of the mountains. Then again, the rain, lol. Fans would be crying the blues.

go bet on some horses, the atmosphere at the track still wreaks of the old days.

They are the one venues that have actually adapted to the times. At least prior to Covid. They were attracting a younger demographic and actually doing a much better job with cheap beers, etc. than the Lions had previously.

A friend mentioned they will have $20 tickets this season? Might be a step in the right direction

20-18! It's only a pre-season victory though. An early sign of a winning season?

That wasn’t the season opener.

That’s why both starting QBs played less than a full game. The other QB for BC, another Canadian, did a decent job. Is it just me, or are the play by play, color, and panel sound like they’re high on drugs or something. It’s like they’re overdoing things a bit. TSN camera work was pretty good. Crisp and sharp. Way better than Sportsnet. Now if you can get coverage of TSN with announcers from Sportsnet (at least Blue Jays staff), it’d be pretty awesome.

Next game will be the season opener. Against the Elks at BC Place Stadium. Should be Edmonton Elk and not Elks, yes? Like Toronto Maple Leaves, lol.

I'm not Lions fan per say but definitely just a fan of wanting to see our local teams have success. I'll keep tabs of all our teams and watch highlights at the very least. I heard the lower bowl was selling really well so they might consider opening up the top? Would be nice to see a solid crowd it has looked sad for so long.

Surprised they are selling out, haven’t really seen much change in terms of marketing etc.

whitev70r
06-09-2022, 07:00 AM
I've got tix ... wife's company was raffling off 50 tickets and we won 2. Maybe a lot of corporate giveaways to get to near sold out status? There is absolutely nothin about the BC Lions that should generate any buzz ... no big name signings, no promising results, etc.

Hondaracer
06-09-2022, 07:05 AM
The new owner and the commissioner got completely grilled by Halford and Brough on 650 these past weeks. The commissioner basically said “we need to get younger fans” without any sort of plan

Doman, the new owner seemed a little more optimistic but he really didn’t lay out anything substantial that made me want to go. Honestly a sold out lions crowd is almost a deterrent to me going lol.. If the upper bowl is open I may be more willing to go and have some space In the section, but then again it turns into a big hassle with concessions etc. if they just half ass open the upper bowl and funnel everyone to 2 concessions it totally ruins the experience

winson604
06-09-2022, 08:02 AM
So what was the Big Lions news if any recently? I recall an interview with the new owner say maybe 4 months ago? He said there was something big coming but he can't reveal it yet. So what was it lol

BC Lions is actually my client, I'm having lunch with their head office folks in July.

I'll pick their brains to see what the hell has changed, outside of new ownership of course.

The new owner is young and engaged, so I'm sure they have a good plan ahead.

murd0c
06-10-2022, 11:33 AM
I didn't realize until the other morning that the Lions get zero profit from the concession sales. I honestly think that's a complete load of BS. How can a major sports team not get a cut of the sales for all the food/beer sales.

Hondaracer
06-10-2022, 11:37 AM
Because pavco or whatever owns BC place unlike the aqualinis and rogers arena.

Yea it’s pretty fucked and also why the concessions are so bad, they don’t really have an interest in over staffing when it’s basically just doing the lions a favour

Usually, it's the Lions that get charged with stupid penalties. The Elks are shooting themselves in the foot tonight.

At least yesterday there was a Guest DJ she kept things bumpin… they have a new mascot named Roary who’s much more agile…. The cheerleaders are now called the “Uproar Dance Team” instead of “Lions Pride” and they have a lot of fun video segments on the crowd… giveaways… people were really getting into the songs like Bohemian Rhapsody they kept going to diff people and they’re all going crazy… they did a “Show your Simba” thing and everyone in the crowd was holding their kids out like the Lion King movie scene etc

Not sure if this is all just cuz it’s the home opener or not though.

MG1
06-25-2022, 06:38 PM
Damn............. kept the Argos from crossing the goal line twice from the one yard line. How the hell did Toronto not get it done? Zero points. Big turnover. Hope this is sign of things to come. D Fence getting it done. Roarke is amazing 7-0 so far and knocking at the door again. 17-3 lead now. Stay healthy, stay healthy, stay healthy.............

Bobbled snap, haven't seen that in a while.

20 -3 lead at the half.

Really physical game. Quite a few Lions injured. On a side note. BC has always had great kickers. Lui Passaglia was a legend. Most points scored by any football player ever, in any league. Flintoft is carrying on that tradition. Averaging 61+ yards. Sean Whyte not too shabby (South Surrey Rams and Semiahmoo Secondary graduate).

Back to Passaglia........... amazing record.

https://bcsportshall.com/honoured_member/lui-passaglia/

Gotta mention him at least once every year in a BC Lions thread.

Judging by the amount of children and young folk in the crowd, looks like the owner is doing a great job of promoting the CFL. Plenty of children involved in playing football already. By bringing them out to games to watch a successful team that features local talent? Gold.

As for the injuries suffered by the Lions yesterday, I hope Bo Lokombo is doing okay. When he came over as a kid in middle school, he towered over the rest of the boys. When he played for Mouat Secondary, everyone knew he’d make it as a professional athlete.

The real test. Home game vs the Blue Bombers. Last year's Grey Cup Champions.

If we can keep up with Winnipeg, that would be a positive. Kickoff in a few minutes.............. on TSN. 211.

For the love of Mother Mary, Winnipeg 7-0 lead on a kickoff return (first play). Untouched 76 yarder.

Well, looks like uphill all the way. Down 21-0 at end of first quarter. Comeback is not possible against a team like Winnipeg. Knew Lions would lose today, but not by a huge margin. Oh well. First major was a kickoff return, but when Roarke got picked off, it was sign of things to come.

Don't drop the ball and don't take any stupid penalties.

Pretty simple. It's good to see the running game being a thing this year. QB sneak here and there would keep the opponents guessing. No Lucky Whitehead, but Burnham is in.

MG1
11-06-2022, 07:08 PM
Yeah, the Bombers are a force to be reckoned with...........

Get past them and the Grey Cup is ours.

That pinpoint throw to Burnham was spectacular. And, no interceptions by Rourke. Some close calls, but damn, our receivers are up to the task. Even that newly acquired receiver, Collins came through with some good catches.

The front four and the defensive front. What can you say? If everyone on the roster is 100%, Lions can pull it off.

They were able to trick one of the Calgary players to go offside. That was a gutsy play.

The weather is going to be a big factor. Lions used to playing under the dome and not in the snow. Equipment and preparation is the key.

Up against a team that is destined for a threepeat. Blue Bombers live in conditions like this. Cold is a friend, lol.

Stanger things have happened, though. Gotta stay positive.

Go, Lions, GO!!!!

MG1
11-13-2022, 12:52 PM
Close call............. blocked punt. Winnipeg recovers, but penalty of roughing the kicker gives ball back to Lions. Rourke is not right in this weather. Almost intercepted. Lions down 0-6.

WTF????????? Lions recover a fumble off a Flintoff kickoff.

Lions at the 5 of Blue Bombers.

Pipkin TD!!!!! That guy just ploughed through the entire Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Lions up 7-6.

All I can say is, "WAH!!!!!!!!!"

MG1

Disappointed but kinda saw it coming, Winnipeg is solid but score looked close, didn't watch the game, was it as close as the score reflected?

On that play where he ran it all the way, should he have stopped and gone down at the 1 yd line and let the offense take over and run it in? I mean the avg fan don't know the rules but a player should.. would require pretty high CFL IQ though.

MG1
11-13-2022, 10:03 PM
I think it being a missed convert, the scoring is different. If he stops running at any point, the opposition just ends up kicking the ball back to BC from the kickoff position. 2 points is lost and that's it.

If it were a missed field goal or punt, it would be different. That's my take on it.

and, yes, it was a close game in that BC dropped the ball many times. 2 of the dropped balls were close interceptions. The outcome might have been different. Winnipeg had better hand warmers than the Lions, I'm afraid. Got to use Zippo hand warmers and not cheap, made in chinar crap, gulolol. Actually, Zippo hand warmers are made in chinar, hee hee, hue hue, pew pew. I know, 'cause I have one.

BTW, those chemical hand warmers you buy from Costco are pretty darn good. Put a few of those in each kangaroo pouch and you're good to go.

At the end of the game, Rourke looked composed, but soon after, when Burnham approached him for a hug, dude just completely fell apart. I felt so badly for him. He's young and he's just starting out. He'll be back with a vengeance. Roar, Lions, ROAR!!!!!

TB12 https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-news-buccaneers-tom-brady-gives-a-massive-hint-on-his-careers-future-20221115-0033.html

During his Let's go podcast on Monday, Tom Brady talked about his next step. For everybody's surprise, he wants to play in another league as he has a 4-0 record when playing outside the United States.

"I'm hoping I can get to go to play in the CFL at some point and really see what I can make of myself up there," Brady said. "Because things have gone pretty well outside the country."

Well, that didn't take long! Good luck.

https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1592561290102177792

Wish him the best but he's got a long road to have any chance of even being a backup somewhere. The issue is teams generally do not give chances to guys that either don't have NFL experience, were not drafted by them or were not a high draft pick for another team at the QB position.

There are only a few examples of QB's over the last 50 years, Warren Moon being the most obvious one, Doug Flutie got to go back to the NFL and play for Buffalo after dominating the CFL from 90 to 97 but even he lost his job the second the starter was available even though Flutie was the better player. When teams use draft picks on QB's they are very hesitant to bench them in favour of free agent signings.

Remember when Casey Printers went to the Chiefs? He was the 2nd best QB on that team but he got cut in favour of Huard, an NFL journeyman with arguably less skill.

Hope he goes there and proves me wrong and lands somewhere, financially he'll be so much better off and the Riders won't have to face him 2-3 times a year. :)

Vernon Adams Jr. (Not from Vernon, BC, gulolol).

He came to the Lions via Mount Royal Alouettes last year. Smart move on the Lions part. Adams has been around for quite some time. Back and forth between teams, always coming back to Montreal.

Up against a team with so much going for them. The fans didn't make it easy. If VA was injured, why didn't they bring in Dane Evans? He's not some rookie. No matter what, Winnipeg Blue Bombers was just too much. BC had no business being that close at the end of the first half.

I usually wish the team that beats our team to go on to win the big one, but this time, I hope Montreal pulls off an upset. Winnipeg doesn't need another championship.

Was Mathieu Betts in this game? Didn't hear his name once.

I dislike both teams, so just watching it for stupid plays. Like the fumble by Mount Royal Als. Gotta hang onto the ball no matter what. Opposition is going to do whatever to strip that ball away.

Green Day half time show.............. whatever.

Can't beat Shania Twain no matter what.

LOL............ two cracks at the major and Bombers stop the Als with seconds to go in the first half. What a waste. Couldn't come up with any running plays other than straight on.

Holy Shania's chaps.............. Tyson Philpot of the Allouettes is Cory Philpot's son. Born in Delta, BC. Has a twin brother who plays for Calgary. Cory Philpot played for the Lions way back. Damn................

For the Grey Cup, you just have to turn the game on about 5 mins into the 4th Q to see whether it's worth watching or not.

But when it's worth watching, Grey Cup drama and excitement is next level. You get a much more higher probability of an exciting finish in a Grey Cup than a Superbowl.

If you've been thinking of taking in some games, go with your child. This is an awesome deal. Just don't get seats in the east behind the uprights, lol. Anyway, tickets for you and a child under 17 for $300.00. Ten home games. Cheapest tickets in town for any professional sporting event.

It was an exciting game between the Lions and Stampeders. -watched in on TV last Saturday.

Vernon Adams made some clutch throws for TDs. The throw to Hollins was pinpoint accurate.

The defense made some big stops in the red zone to prevent the Stampeders from getting a TD just before halftime.

As for the BC Place concessions, I say that from the posts that people mention about the beer sales, nothing has changed in terms of the incompetent management at PavCo. LUL

I remember back in the day working at B.C. Place at the concessions in my early 20s as a side hustle. The "mandatory picture ID" check sign at the beer stands meant that every customer needed to show ID. Some customers were fine with showing ID. Of course, many customers were angry with this policy.

Explaining to some customers the "show ID" requirement was a job in itself. I'm thinking " Buddy, I know that you are old enough to be my grandfather, when you order a beer. My job requires me to check for picture ID".

The American customers were the most generous customers with their tips. Some customers at the beer stands were so angry about the picture ID requirement, that one time I asked my supervisor, "please put me in the back of stand to steam hot dog wieners for the next B.C. Lions game". LUL
