Some blind Canadians say Transport Canada's proposed requirement that electric vehicles (EVs) emit pedestrian warning noise is a good start — but they think the sound should be standardized.

Unlike the U.S. and Europe, Canada doesn't currently require electric vehicles and their quieter motors to generate sound when travelling at low speeds.

In April 2021, Transport Canada proposed a requirement that all hybrid and electric cars have sound emitters when travelling at low speeds. This regulation is scheduled to take effect in 2023, but allows manufacturers to pick their own sounds.

While minimum standards would need to be met, "manufacturers would be free to choose what type of sound they apply to their vehicle," wrote Transport Canada in an emailed statement.

Vehicles without internal combustion engines make little noise other than the sounds of wind resistance and the rubber tires against the road. On a city street with ambient noise, they can be impossible to audibly detect.

Ioniq 5 and Leaf are sold out for the year.

We have Leaf orders from September without allocations.
Volvo XC40 EV is 6-8 months away.
C40 EV is 2-3 months away.
Ariya, S.O.L. All pre-orders sold and allocation for inventory is expected to be ~5 per month

Put a deposit down for a deposit down for an ioniq 5 in April 2022. Dealership said they will email with an update by June 1. I didn't get an email from the dealership so doesn't look like I will get the car?

I put a deposit down for an Ioniq 5 in mid-March and I won't bother asking for an update until the fall. Clearly they have more orders than there are production slots, and I suspect there has been poor communication between Hyundai and the dealerships. In other words, whatever the dealership tells you now won't be accurate anyway.

Hyundai Kia don't build to orders anyways. The cars come in as they build it the dealer has limited info as to what's going to come in. If a lower spec car comes in the ppl higher on the list may decide to pass and it will drop to the next guy and so on. Toyota and Lexus are the same way.
