: Victim of a robbery at gunpoint? - what would you do?

Curious to see if people would just YOLO and take the robbers out by rushing them OR letting themselves get robbed with potentially fake guns.

I would YOLO - if they want to kill me, they can add a murder charge to their wanted status.

"height" of a sunday brunch means the robbers were outnumbered...

The incident involved two men with guns entering the restaurant, located on Commercial Drive near Kitchener Street, “at the height of Sunday brunch.”

“They pointed the weapons at staff and patrons, ordering the victims to hand over cellular phones and other valuables,” said VPD Sergeant Steve Addison in a statement.

lol I'm not going to rely on Canada's justice system to avenge my death over a phone they can't use and a wallet which they'll be locked out of my cards within minutes. Why risk your life over such meaningless shit?

good ol' DUST ... what's crazy is that many of his technique are in aikido, and everyone online says aikido is BS, but some people believe in his tactics and don't say it's BS, maybe it's the uniform and earpiece vs "magic pants"

i can replace a phone or wallet, i can't replace my life

Years ago my best friend was taken at gunpoint at his work in a fucked up situation. He worked at a printing company in Richmond, I don't know if the robbers thought it was a grow op or what but they clearly robbed the wrong place if they were looking for a big score.

He was working late it was around 5:30 the rest of the staff had left, his boss had ran out to do some running around, his bosses wife who was really pregnant at the time was in the office doing some book keeping, they were closed but the front door wasn't locked when 3 guys came in with guns.

My buddy was in the back in the warehouse, he looks up to see a dude rushing him with a gun, tossed to the ground and tied up. They tied up his bosses wife, took the their bank cards and their car keys. They left two people at the location with them and had another guy go to the bank machines and withdraw whatever they could get. They ended up taking two vehicles and the cash.

I know it fucked my buddy up for a while, I spoke to him about it's because he felt so helpless, here is this pregnant woman who also happens to be a really close friend to him he's close to the entire family and he can't do anything to help her.

He got over it over time, still works there in the same shop, this happened about 18 years ago, they were never caught.

If it's me I'm handing them my shit, not worth dying for.

At most I have maybe $500 worth of stuff on me. I'm not getting killed for that.

You're not just risking yourself by being stupid either. Bullets miss or pass through things so now you're risking the lives of everyone else in there too.

Saw this in the news this morning, and the first thing that crossed my mind was -- how much -- how little, actually -- would they be able to make off with in this day and age?

I hardly carry any cash around in my wallet these days, unless I know there is some Chinese cash only shop that I need to go to. Most of the time, I have <$50 on me, and it wouldn't be odd if I have <$20.

The phone is useless as someone has already said -- it gets locked relatively quickly, and the phone can be made useless across N.America by reporting it.

So that means the biggest stash would be the cash register. But this was a Sunday brunch small restaurant, so I wouldn't expect there to be too much money. If it was your more traditional Chinese restaurant in Richmond, then OK -- there is gonna be quite a lot more cash.

So the robbers' motivation to hit this place didn't really make sense to me.

OP, the only time you rush people like this is if you have an instinct that they're going to fire or try to f*ck shit up. Your life is worth more to your friends and family than your phone or your nice wallet.

Yah, heard about that in the news today. If for cash, phone, credit card ... guy can have it. Only time I'd have to think about rushing the guy is if he was killing and firing randomly ... if there is a good chance you're going to die, might as well try to prevent others from getting killed. But easy to type on a keyboard ... in real live situation ... I dunno, the crap in my pants might weigh me down from jumping the guy.

You have to be retarded to not just give them your phone and wallet.

Unless you can rush them at speed of light, you just asking to be shot. As they can claim "self defense"

Although if you so happen to have a gun on you and shoot them, you still will be in trouble. So its a no win situation. Lol

That sounds like something that would happen in America lol, rob a place at gunpoint and then get off on killing someone because you claim self defense when they try to stop you

Local news and VPD tried to reinforce the 'cooperate and live, as it's only stuff' message a few years back. It was right after some guy got shot trying to stop a restaurant robbery on Cambie near king.ed. He apparently went after the guys saying they had fake/Airsoft guns. They were real. Cost him his life. Ten years ago maybe? It was a while back.

You only die once.

People don't see the difference. YOLO

Some dude said to me, that's like cup half full as opposed to cup half empty. Not in this case. One bullet to the cup and it empties out stat. Nuff said.

So this whole situation is suspicious AF. Who steals wallets and phones these days? Unless they wanted a bunch of bricks and useless cancelled plastic.

*Conspiracy Hat ON*

Place that was hit was called Cafe Du Soleil. There WAS another restaurant on the SAME street -Commercial Dr- that was called Cafe Deux Soleils. Yes, very same-samey - something you'd see in a place like Vietnam designed to fool tourists. The latter restaurant closed down very recently (https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/food-and-drink/cafe-deux-soleils-announces-permanent-closure-vancouver-bc-5909884) so what was the relationship between that and the old restaurant? Former scorned employee? Bitter rival? The robbed restaurant has a sign out that says it's "The Original"...implying the other place was a copy?

Does anyone else find it suspicious that when one place is forced out of business the so-called "Original" is violently robbed? Hope the VPD is investigating the (former) owners of Cafe Deux Soleils. That's where you'll find the answers I bet...

...and a bunch of useless cards and phones.

same here, this robbery makes no sense.
You wen through all that trouble to get a gun
you are going to risk jail time,
possible injury/death from gun fight with police
all that to rob a hole in the wall diner? where cash is not used as much?
Bank? Jewelry store? Electronic/Computer store?
Nope, a fking diner, and you take bunch of phones that will be bricked in few minutes, wallets full of credit cards will be cancelled....

If you want conspiracy ideas: this is the perfect way to steal one specific persons phone without them knowing they're the target.

....and on that phone resides a secret recipe for a delicious Hollandaise sauce that his rival has been lusting over for years and blocking his misguided attempt at cornering the Commercial Drive brunch market...instead causing him to lose his business!! It all makes sense, this is the perfect act of REVENGE!!

By Jove, I think we've got it Watson!

VPD call me!

Cafe Deux Soleils don't sue me!

The problem with these kind of self defense videos is they give people a false sense of security.

Maybe if you train for these type of situations on a regular basis... but the "average joe" isn't going to be prepared emotionally or physically to pull off stuff like this. Factor in the unpredictability of real life, as opposed to a staged attacker ready to play along. Something's not going to go as envisioned.

Especially in cases where there's more than 1 gunman, these gun disarmament videos become pointless.

This inflation, shrinking of the middle class, and disparity between the have vs have nots is causing people to turn more to crime.

I think without question like most people I'd just cooperate and give in to their demands.

That said had only 2 encounters with a firearm incident both involving fights. First time was another car was raging, back and forth and it all came to a stop. Both parties came out, one guy from the other side pulled out a gun while approaching and my buddy without hesitation ran up to the guy and punched him in the face. The guy ended up hitting back my friend on the head with the gun and it fired as he hit but bullet went god knows where. Sirens heard all parties split.

2nd time was an arranged meat up with another group of guys to settle some beef. The leaders of the groups from each side were front and center. Other leader pulls out a gun and buddy said what how many bullets you got in there, how many of us can you take down. Basically called his bluff that he was just trying to flex, it worked and I can't remember what happened after but cooler heads prevailed.
