I think that Toyota/Lexus don't sell the LM or the Alphard in North America because there is not enough customer demand for this type of vehicle. They won't make the profit to justify selling this type of vehicle in Canada or the U.S.
Americans and Canadians drive SUVs if they need a vehicle for more passengers or extra storage.
Why spend so much money on an LM or Alphard that can be seen as a overpriced minivan when you can buy an SUV?
I think that in North America, the biggest perception of these mini vans are that their styling looks too basic as an everyday vehicle.

Doesn't pass crash regulations. The front overhang is quite short and in an event of a frontal impact, the engine/tranny will most likely hit the driver.
Also, the rear bumper might not have a proper crash bar either. That's usually how JDM cars get away with length limitations
Badhobz
10-03-2023, 07:50 AM
i still dont understand it, the engineering is already DONE as they are selling this thing in the EU now. The EURO crash certifications are higher standards than north american ones, so if it passes euro tests, it'll pass north american ones too.
Yeah they gotta pay some $$$ to do the certs here, but id still think it would make more sense to do that than say put out a crazy ass niche GT car like my ratrolla and only sell like 1500 units a year GLOBALLY.
Id pick one up, and im sure a lot of people locally here would as well.
donk.

Those Alphards / Vellfires aren't the fun to drive around as everyday vehicles - they're really best enjoyed in the second row seats. I think they're also too small on our roads - the OG Alphards looked big in a tight city like Hong Kong, but they're like a 3/4-sized minivan next to other cars here.
This thing is a potential brothel on wheels!
Reminds me of the time I pulled up to next to one in HK and realized there were two people going at it inside :lol

I went to check this bad boy out in Hong Kong. The price is utterly ridiculous at 2.26 million hkd (400k Canadian) but my god is it ever nice inside. At 6’2 the leg room isn’t quite enough to fully stretch out but anyone shorter you can lay the fuck down for sure.
If I were to sit up, I can probably fit 4 of those “chickens” from temple street in the back of this thing

Ease of access for the plebe that'll be holding it for you as you get out?
Also, from a practical standpoint, wouldn't that let a wet umbrella drain better? I feel that the door holders would get mildewy sooner, and not dry out as quickly.

These have really gone up in price compared to the previous gen - the emperor suite was around 1.8-1.9M HKD IIRC.
When I'm in HK I mostly see LMs around the business district - the people I know stick to new Alphards / Vellfires for family duty plus a separate car (or cars) to drive on their own.

It gets taxed at different brackets and maxes out at 132%.
I. Private cars
(a) on the first $150,000 46%
(b) on the next $150,000 86%
(c) on the next $200,000 115%
(d) on the remainder 132%

MSRP may be different, for instance, it still is cheaper buying water stock FL8 (and those people are driving them for like half a year now, vs the guys still waiting to pay for their FL8 here from the dealer). Also options.
Let's say you purchase a fully loaded car here in HK at 100k, and the total is 200k because tax is 100% on the final price of the car.
Or you buy a non-full loaded water stock car at 70k, get taxed 100% at 70k, buy options seperately for 30k, and install them. your total car price = 170k vs 200k buying the fullload from the dealer.

why don't you get the LHD Alphard 30s from China, does it fall into the 15yrs rule?
3.5L is gas guzzler, 2.5L is slow, hybrid seems to be a better choice in Canada, but hard to find one in low milage.
I have driven Alphard since their 10s, it is a oversized Camry that carries 7 people, not sure what's so excited about owning one. Get Senna, same shit.

I didnt know we can import one from China..... ill have to take a looksy.
That royal lounge 2 seater option is so pimp, thats the only reason i want one. I dont care how it drives. Although Dukes did say that the veilfire lacked insulation and the road noise was quite significant, i wonder if thats the case with the alphard royal lounge too.

A relative drove us from Hong Kong to Macau in their Vellfire. The road noise was quite loud the entire ride. Sure, you can drown it out by cranking the audio volume, but it wasn’t quiet by any means.

You can get a regular Alphard, buy the LM350 kit, order a pair of Chinese custom made Royal lounge seats. I dont know, then hang a 50" TV BrokeBack
2.5 with CVT is butter smooth, 3.5 with 6spd is noisy, D4-S 8spd should be much better.

I have never owned a CVT before, but those Uber XL uses 2.5 and it's damn smooth. I dont get why the 3.5 used 6spd.
If I am not wrong, the newer CVT should have launch gear.

I've only experienced it briefly in gs450h, ls600h, but those are different animals. I've had the most seat time in newer Corolla courtesy cars and they are ok. The engine is pretty loud and kind rubber bands with lag. But it's pretty cool to see it cruise at like 1500 rpm on the highway.

I find usually GBP MSRP translates roughly back to USD, so that's probably around 130k CAD if they do bring it. It'll be rare if they do cause not many ppl will dish out 130k for a minivan.

Even in Japan, these cars are mainly driven by Northeast Chinese airport pickup drivers who camp in the fast lane doing 10 under the speed limit and pissing everyone off so...
I personally don't have any friends with families living in Japan who drive Alphards/Vellfires. They either just drive kei vans or Fit shuttles or whatever. They're mostly made to be driven around in, in luxury, not anything that is popular in North America.
