What car would you buy your 17 y/o self?

You're 17 again and you're at the ICBC driver licensing center. You're finishing up your road test. The examiner has you reverse into a parking space. You're a little over the line. Shit. You look in their face. Did you fail? Can't tell. They get out. You get out. No words are exchanged. Silent walk in. They gesture to Window 9: "wait there."
A long time goes by. They're back. "You passed."
Fk yeah.
You exit, shiny green N in hand. There, right outside the door, is someone standing in your way. You go "who the heck are you?"
"I'm you. 20 years later."
"You look terrible."
"Fuck you. Here's the keys." They toss you keys. "Drive safe. Don't get us killed."
"Keys to what?" They disappear.
You hit the key fob. It's the car right in front of you. Holy shit. You break out in a grin.
-> What did you buy your 17 y/o self?
---
Rules:
You have $20,000* of today's dollars to spend, on a period-correct car you're going to buy today, then send it back in time.
The car had to be available at the time. E.g. if it was 2002 when you were 17, then the car has to be a '03 model year, or older. We're not trying to fk up the timeline here.
You get the remaining cash in the trunk to pay for operating expenses.
Try BAT, for convenience.
One car. You can't split it up into multiple cars.
You can't just keep it for yourself, that's dickish.
You can't just invest the money for them. No.
If you already had a sweet ride back then, then screw you. But anyway, imagine you didn't.
*You got the money from a payout suing for slipping on hot coffee. Or something. Doesn't matter: didn't cost you anything.

It would have been 2005. $20k ain't buying a new E46M3 though.
Though granted my driving skill back then, I would cease to exist with a E46M3. Probably wrap it around a tree somewhere a week after getting the car.
Realistically, probably a Matrix XRS.

Easy for me. Sc300 or 400 with a stick shift. 1uz or 2jz, rwd, luxurious and stylish. Would probably get the 20 year old me crap load of ass
Of course that’s in hindsight.
The actual car I wanted when I was 20 was the 1998 240sx. I sat in it so many times when my folks brought the Sentra in for service. Really really loved the looks of that coupe. Didn’t care it could drift / drive. It was that sleek coupe profile that had me entranced.

I'm sure I've said this many times, but IMO, the NC Miata is the best bang for the buck Miata right now. It is faster and more sophisticated than the NA/NB, has tremendous aftermarket support just like the NA/NB, far more reliable than NA/NB bcos they are just much newer cars, and are nowhere nearly as prone to rust issues as NA/NB.

The NC is actually relatively cheap on gas, low maintenance, and insurance wasn't expensive either. You could do a lot worse.
When the C63 V8 came out, I wanted one BAD. But I joked with my parents, even if some one GAVE me a C63 I wouldn't be able to afford to even drive it. It was something like 70l on gas for 280km range. It was ridiculously bad.

4th one was a turbo coupe I don’t have a picture of.
A buddy of mine also saved up all his Pennie’s and bought this EF to try and join the civic nation crew lol:
https://i.imgur.com/Nt00mHh.jpg
This thing had some fucking weird engine I can’t remember what it was.. it was a DOHC engine but like a prelude bottom with a GSR head or some Frankenstein BS the previous owner thought he wanted… my buddy -always- mis-shifted 2nd or 3rd so he eventually was shunned from the civic crew lol.
In terms of the original question I’ve got 2, I would have been 17 in 2003/2004
DA GSR, always loved that big wide mouth bumper the GSR had
https://i.imgur.com/j6ssufs.jpg
Or probably the top choice would be a 93 5.0 LX
https://i.imgur.com/5Ff4fDn.jpg
Those 5.0’s were a legitimately fast car for the time and still probably shit on a lot of modern cars today. A manual transmission and some street radials and you could get sideways just down gearing
Plentiful parts, cheap performance upgrades, big base to build on

I had no cash flow when I was 17 so any car given to me would've been useless without a separate allowance to cover operating costs. My parents didn't give me an allowance and I wasn't allowed to work, so even something simple like buying cafeteria food was not an option. I only got to enjoy food from the school store because I worked there as one of the managers lol

My brother had an AW11 with t tops as his first car, he bought it from someone down there around 2010? It was white with bronze wheels, I want to say Konig Hyperlites or something like that, MOMO Race wheel and some funky mini sunwoofer on the floor in front of the passenger seat.
The first time he let me drive it I went over some train tracks and the O2 sensor fell out because it was just held on with worm clamps.

On second thought, a DB1 in white would also work very well for my 17 year old self. It would even be practical with 4 doors, and I liked it better than the 2 door hatch version.
A good friend in HS had that as his family car, although he used to drive it lots. We did a lot of stupid stuff in it, of course including speed runs on the UBC stretch of SW Marine Drive lol~

These cars were so much better built than the Nissan / Mazda / Ford crap that my dad bought, and at the time, I just couldn't understand why Dad didn't go with Honda / Acura products.
(Of course, now that I am in a similar position as he was in, I have a better understanding of the constraints he had to juggle...)

Those years of the Mazda Protege in all its forms.. sedan... MP3/MPS... P5... they're so underappreciated. Just great driving cars. Miles ahead of anything else at the time, just never got much aftermarket support or tuner interest.

I know the early model year RX8 are prone to the engine being flooded, and somehow I seem to think that the 2004 model year is still early enough to suffer from the problem. So maybe you don't want to setup your 17 yr old self to failure and repair bills?

Probably the same car I had at 17.. 92 GTI but I’d look for a clean 16V example. Same colour as well. Something like this:

Mine was a lemon and soured my taste for German vehicles. I’ve only owned Japanese cars since.
Too bad ITRs are now $20k+ easily, they were like $15k when I was 17 :alone: :okay:
So I'll pick 8th gen Civic Si or Acura CSX Type S :D

My dad's former boss' son was into VWs back in the day and had this exact GTI brand new as they did a lot of business with the old Wetmore Motors in West Van back when they were a VW dealer. This car was always a lemon and always failed and spent more time in the shop than on the road.
Despite this, my dad still ended up buying an 88 or 89 VW Cabriolet for my mom and it was equally as bad. That ruined my dad's taste for German cars as well, as it did for me.
Fast forward to my late 20s/early 30s, I ended up with two BMWs, two Porsches, a classic Alfa Romeo, and this Mini. They have their fair share of problems so I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. This only fueled my dad's disdain for European vehicles.
I went to test drive a 2023 Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti the other day with my wife. I love the damn thing so much. But we both know it's a total POS. I want it. Not sure why my wife married me. Edit: A very wise and amazing member who posted in this thread shared a lot of great insight into how shitty Alfa Romeo is. :D

^ I love the Giulia, it evokes so much more emotion compared to the similar vintage F30 3 series. The BMWs feel so business.
So now I need to put a coin into the box that James May had when he reviewed the Alfa.

I found mostly good feedback regarding the reliability of the current Giulia TIs - the general public is scared of their reliability but owners seem have few to no issues with them. The Quad had a rough go for the first few MYs but 2020+ should be solid as well.
I recently booked a Giulia Ti for my LA trip next month - wanted to see for myself how good these cars actually are.

I just got my N in 2011 lol. 2nd Try, at Burnaby Lougheed ICBC. They had just phased out the black and green Ns for the super shiny small white and green ones.
I could’ve picked up one of those New Flyer D40 high floor coaches that TransLink retired after the olympics and scrapped them for $1000 apiece haha. The rest of it might not have been able to pay for the storage for the next decade though
At that age i wanted a nice 1991 Civic Si hatch (dunno why I wanted one that had factory DRLs, but I remember that was what i specifically wanted), then later i watched Initial D and wanted a Corolla hatch like everyone else.
Maybe not with the general consensus of sporty cars, but The top choice would be I give myself the $20000 to fix up our existing ‘85 Land Cruiser SWB haha
$15000 in 2011 then couldve gone a long way towards the repairs
(Hopefully with my new job now, i can hve more free time to work on it )

I remember doing my Class 5 with a manual car and it was way easier to maintain the speed limit because I just had to lift off for engine braking, and I could judge speed by the tone of the exhaust lol.
Except the examiner was like "uh yeah I could be failing you for coasting to a stop at red lights in neutral, but I can understand why it wouldn't be possible with a stick shift." So then challenge accepted, I started heel-toe double-clutch downshifting every gear from 5th to 1st at every subsequent red light & stop sign lolol. That bought me brownie points for other minor infractions they could've dinged me on.

06 V6 Honda Accord
The one thing is.... mum DID ask why we weren't buying one of the BMWs lower on the list.
Honda had a E90 330i sport pack one parked next to the Accord listed for the same price... and the Accord was NOT cheap to maintain.
Cars I wish I had:
- B9 S4
- G37
- E39 M5
- 3G TL A-Spec
Cars I would've bought with a lot more hindsight and experience.
The convertible would've made it a far more social experience, capture excitement and adventure.
- JK Wrangler
- JCW Cooper / 500 Abarth Convertible, in Red
- E93 335i/M3
- Coyote Mustang in Grabber Blue
- S2000, in White
