Sorry MG1 but had to make a new thread since rumors are flying around that
Shohei Ohtani is flying a PJ from LA to YYC to sign with the Blue Jays today.

If this actually happens is this the biggest signing in Canadian sports history? All I know is this is going to be massive and I so hope he signs with the Jays.

SOURCE: Yusei Kikuchi reserves entire upscale sushi restaurant near Rogers Centre for tonight. Reservation made for 50+ people. Make of it what you will…

I can't believe this is even a possibility - just being seriously considered is wild.

It's insane that it's even gotten this close. After last season I said that Rogers should do everything they could to sign him but I didn't think it was actually even a remote possibility. Hopefully he's not just using them for leverage for the Dodgers but if he signs I think it might possibly be the biggest signing in Canadian Sports history.

I'd love to see Ohtani sign with the BJs. It just shows we can still land these big name talents in sports here in Canada.

It's sad this doesn't translate into the NBA, those guys just don't want to play up here.

It probably helps with him being from Japan he doesn't have the same desire to stay in the states as most US born players seem to have.

Gotta be hard leaving West Coast California to move to Toronto though lol that's probably the biggest sacrifice.

Thanks.

Hopefully it happens. I already have a LA Angels Ohtani bobblehead and Funko Pop. He’d look awesome in a Jays uniform. I wAnder if his injury has healed properly. I’ve been hoping he’d come up to Canada since last season when rumours were flying around the league. Glad NY didn’t get him.

Oh yeah, IN on first page!

MG1

Just realized, he’ll be on the same team as his high school buddy, Kikuchi. Jays already have a translator, lol.

Could that have been one of the factors? Being reunited with his former high school teammate. Not even sure if they were close.

i can only imagine that someone as popular as him would want to play in a premier city. nobody wants to play their whole career in a city that has less to offer if they can pick anywhere. i'd for sure want to play for the yankees or dodgers if i was able to pick anywhere

mikemhg
12-10-2023, 09:40 AM
I'd never want to play in a Canadian city if I were a professional athlete.

Our sports media is rabid, there isn't much else going on from a sports teams perspective so all eyes are on you, the lack of anonymity, cold weather, sprinkled with high taxes and real-estate costs.

It's a lose lose compared to any of the other major American cities.

Nevermind all half these guys want to do is fuck constantly, imagine being the guy in Toronto in December taking some 10 home and getting out of your parka and turning the heat on, then she's gotta rub her hands together for 5 minutes so they're warm enough to touch your junk that you're simultaneously trying on sheer willpower alone to get out of its inverted -20C state

Or you're the guy in Florida in December having a pool or hot tub party at your mansion and puling a thong to the side whenever you feel like it lol

MarkyMark
12-10-2023, 10:40 AM
Yeah Toronto realistically never stood a chance lol

I guess the only solace BJ fans can take is that you aren't guaranteed winning shit in baseball no matter how much money you spend. The Mets owner went insane last year with the highest payroll ever and they didn't even come close to the playoffs.

I would have went nuts if Ohtani got signed, but sitting back and looking at it, two Tommy John surgeries, can't pitch this coming season, will be ever be the pitcher he was before? You're one more injury away from a 700 million dollar DH.

Anyways that's my butt hurt opinion and I'm sticking to it lol

this guy deferred almost all his income to after his 10 year contract so its bringing his aav down to 46-48m this also means he is getting paid only 2m per year giving the dodgers all the ammunition to just stack the team

i really hope these guys get swept by the rockies on an annual basis

MarkyMark
12-11-2023, 08:13 PM
Seems a weird way of doing it, I mean it's a sweet deal for the Dodgers as they are reportedly paying him 2 million a year for 10 years, and then 68 mill a year from 2034-43 so with whatever inflation is by then that helps them out I suppose.

I can see this becoming banned for future contracts if this becomes the new normal though.

hypediss
12-11-2023, 08:20 PM
this has to be addressed on the next cba else its really a 2 horse race for the league: yankees and dodgers, especially true when the regional sports networks down south r imploding everywhere except for the hot markets (LA, NY, CHI, PHI)

with a league that has no salary cap and floor, its hard to convince people to be interested in the game when its seemingly favouring the rich teams

Hahaha so it's okay to defer $680 million of your $700 million contract in the MLB to cicrumvent the cap???? But in the NHL they can go back and say naughty naughty about a goalie's contract they originally approved in the first place and penalize a team?

Shit's wild.

hypediss
12-12-2023, 09:01 AM

this type of bs is what stops the game from growing

whitev70r
12-12-2023, 10:23 AM
yah, I'm just thinking ... who's going to want to be GM of the Dodgers in 10 yrs? When you have a $68M AAV salary on your cap for a bench warmer? Epitome of mortgaging your future for today.

hypediss
12-12-2023, 10:30 AM
no man they wont be faced with that cap, they just need to pay up which really is a non-issue.

the cap hit is all calculated now what they are getting his with on a per year basis is:
68m (that was deferred) brought to present value @5% --> about 41m
2m they are paying him throughout his contract length

in total it comes about to like 43m on the actual cap hit.

ohtani literally cheat coded this for any team he was gunna sign with (lets be honest it was always the dodgers) so they could stack the team

dodgers would have no issue paying the money now or in the future cause they're a big market team, their pockets are so deep they dont care

not like the jays would have it hard to do that too but since everyone in america hates toronto we always get shafted when it comes to bringing in superstars.

whitev70r
12-12-2023, 10:33 AM
^ not really understanding this Ohtani math.

So if it doesn't help the cap why do this? You're saying it is $41M annual cap hit but he is only getting paid $2M for the first 10 yrs? Doesn't make sense. Only way it makes sense is if it helps the cap now so they can surround him with more good players.

Does MLB even have a hard cap? Or do they go with luxury tax like NBA?

Well with the deferrals his cap hit is 46 million instead of 70 million each year so that is saving money and allowing them to keep signing more players as well as avoiding paying more for going over the luxury tax.

Reading up on it it's not uncommon to defer payments in baseball for cap reasons it's just that the amount they are doing it with Ohtani is unprecedented.

MLB doesnt have a hard cap, it has what they call "luxury tax" which kinda has limiting effects because the penalties are monetary so deep pocket teams like dodgers or yankees can cont to pay them if they so wish to.

from an actual budget standpoint, ohtani is costing the dodgers 2m right now, they frees up quite alot of money to go after other players in contrast if they had to pay him the full 70m.

the second benefit is by deferring the 68m payment to 10 years later and wish how mlb calculates the value of the contract, it took a discount on the contract value to calculate the total contract value (as if it were to be paid today - finance stuff: net present value).

overall the second benefit is instead of eating a 70m cap hit they are taking a 43m cap hit for ohtani which means they got room before they hit the first threshold of the luxury tax - a scheme to save more money

this is why its bs because big market teams can afford this whilst like 20+ smaller market teams cant pull this off - aka stack the team like the yankees did back in 00s

MLB might be dying, but the sport isn't. All around the world, baseball is as popular as ever. Just have to watch the World Baseball Classic. Baseball at all levels. Not going away any time soon. Like all other sports, focus is always at the professional level. Amateur leagues and minor league play is awesome to watch.

Team is wearing them in today's game vs the Pirates. Starting in 5 minutes.

They're coming off a 3 game sweep of the CWS. Last place team, but still. Jamie Campbell got to toss the broom across the studio for the first time this season.

On a side note Pirate's Outfielder, Conner Joe is American with Chinese background. Funny how people claim Joe is Korean. LOL, the owners of Sunrise Market are about as Chinese as it get's (classmate). Their surname is Joe. Comes from word Cho. I guess it can be Korean butt...........not in this case. First in baseball history. All because of a weird rule due to Covid. A rule that hasn't changed.

Blue Jays game two months ago went into rain delay and eventually got postponed/suspended. Well, today is the make up game. So, double header. First game is the make up game. Up to the plate before the rain was Danny Jansen. He happened to be on the Blue Jays team at the time. Now he's on The Boston Red Sox team. He's catching in today's game as a Red Sox, but a pinch hitter is at bat in Danny Jansen's place. Hitting and catching at the same time, lol.

The game, of course starts at the top of the second. It's just weird. Funny as all hell. A lot of people, like me, don't get it.....................

In other news.......... Shohei Ohtani just hit his 47th home run against Chicago Cubs. Goes well with his 47th stolen base from last night.

50/50 is totally possible. History in the making.............. please, please, please, stay healthy. I want to see it and say I witnessed it.

Teoscar Hernandez (former Blue Jay) in today's game, as well. Down 2-0, LA is now up 4-2. I love baseball................ Till now, I had no reason to watch any other team than the Jays.

EDIT: 5-2. Back to back to back home runs for the Dodgers. Bottom of the first. Lol, combo breaker - only a single.

Holy cow............. 48 stolen bases now. Then, on a Friedman hit to centre field, he beats out a throw to third base. damn, he's fast, and smart.

I'm thinking I'm a Dodgers fan now. Old Jays, Teoscar Hernandez and now Kevin, I didn't steal that card, Kiermaier playing for the Dodgers.

Down 2-0, Ohtani hits two ribeyes in the game to tie it up. Later in the game, 9th inning, Atlanta manager with two outs, gives Ohtani the four finger and Mookie Betts says, "It's go time!" Mookie drives in a run. Later in the same inning, Dodgers hit back to back to back home runs. Hernandez, Edman, and Muncy. Deja vu. 9-2 win.

I've been recording the Dodgers games, in case I miss the 50/50 game. It'll be first time in MLB history. Never been done. Ever!

On a side note the New Jays swept the series against the Cardy's today. Jamie Campbell Broom flip time.

Shohei Ohtani just hit his 48th HR. He's now 48/48.

Shohei stole base number 49 today. No home run, but IMHO, a stolen base is harder to get than a homer. I mean the guy has a knack for hitting it deep. Actually, I take that back. He's such a good hitter, the opposition will four finger him. His speed and reflexes will get him a stolen base easily.

Can't imagine him being able to pitch on top of all this. Nuts.

Ohtani did it, created the 50 HR -50 stolen bases club. And he's not done, there are like 9 games left, I think ... he could create the 55-55 club !!

What?????? I missed it!!!

Okay, hopefully I have it on PVR.

Fan who caught the ball did not return it............. probably worth a lot of money. Still, the right thing to do is give it back. I'm sure Ohtani and the LA Dodgers will compensate. If I were the person, I'd give it back and let the baseball gods take care of the rest.

if he wants any GOOD value, he needs the park to authenticate it

regardless, the fan in for something cool.. the dodgers wont compensate him for shit tho.

Gotta love Buck Martinez and his awesome stories.

Conversation started with players and managers getting thrown out of games. Then progressed to announcers getting thrown out. Asked how? Buck tells story of a PA announcer being thrown out of the game for............playing "Three Blind Mice," during the game, after a bad call, lololololol.............

Ohtani is next level.

As for the fan who caught it not giving it back, I have no issues with that. You paid your ticket to be there, you basically won the lottery catching that ball so go get what it's worth. If the Dodgers or Ohtani want it that bad they have more than enough cash to get it and they wouldn't even notice the money missing from their account.

Authentication of sorts is already done. All balls are serialized and recorded. I remember when Judge was going for some record. Specially marked balls. A set given to the ump to give to the pitcher when the batter steps up to the plate.

Anyway, I think Shohei is a pretty honourable guy. In all honesty, he might not even care. He's going to be in Cooperstown. That is a pretty big deal.

He made history. Nobody has done it before. 55/55 club? Actually, being in a World Series is a dream for him. One ball is insignificant in the bigger scheme of things. I can see it now. In 2025 Ohtani pitches a no hitter while he pulls a natural cycle. Now that would put him in god-like territory.

I think I almost prefer him as a DH lol. He's had a couple arm surgeries now so the next arm injury is probably going to be a wrap for his pitching career so it'll be interesting to see if he comes back still throwing gas and able to stay healthy doing it.

Without pitching I feel like it allows him the energy to hit bombs and steal bases with ease.

Walk off 10th inning grand slam!

Crazy game. Yankees are one scary team, but LA Dodgers find a way to win game one.

I just want Teoscar to win a World Series

Grand Slam by Freddie Freeman a Canadian American (both parents Canadian).

Could've ended differently. Yankee home run dialed back to a double 'cause a fan caught the ball at the top of the wall (fan interference).

Pitching Cortes in that situation when he's been injured since September is crazy, Boone fucked up

LA Dodgers are 2024 World Series Champions!!!

Yankees were up 5-0 and looked like game six was going to happen. Then, the Yankees choked. Big Time choke. Meltdown - errors galore.

Teoscar - so happy for him.

Freeman a Canadian - yes he plays for Canada in the World Baseball Classic. Born in US, but parents are Canadian. He is a proud Canadian. Weird, but true.

Shohei Ohtani - man, playing with a serious injury.

Yamamoto - Japan must be going nuts right now.

Best part...... those fucking Yankees get schooled. Love it , love it, love it..............................

EDIT: Freddy Freeman wins the World Series MVP!

Bizarre game - but I’m happy. Buehler to come out to save the game? Zero bullpen left? Amazing.

Thrilled for teo and KK - and really even though I hate how the dodgers can buy a team - some of my fav players are there. No villains on the team

Keke Mook FF. Can’t hate any of those guys. And as salty as I am that Shohei isn’t a jay - can’t hate the guy. He’s a beast

Congrats Dodgers

And................. Cavan Biggio!

NY can be accused of buying a winning team, but man, did they fail big time.............. cocky little bitches.

Dodgers with all they've gone through with injuries and personal issues, they truly deserved it.

To be fair LA is basically at the top of the list on "buying" a championship it's just they deferred huge contracts like Ohtani's to keep the numbers down.
