Guilty Pleasures (Food)
Thought there was a thread about food you don't want to admit you like(d). Now or as a child.
Anyway middle of the night. I wake up craving for KD.
I got up and made some KD. I remember making it with all kinds of extras in it. I had nothing exotic in the fridge, so went with Kirkland Bacon Bits.
The KD was expired.......... not gonna tell you by how much, but it was by quite a bit.
I make mine soggy............ I even added parmesan to the mix, lol.
Another guilty pleasure is ramen noodles with wieners, curry, and peas. Cracked egg or two. Sometimes whole, sometimes swirled.
I used to think KD was poor mans food (well, it is), but I found out everybody loves it............. just gotta get them to admit it.
Yeah, I had to put in (Food) in the title, 'cause................
donk.

The real question here is, how much of revscene will stand outside a ramen place for 45 minutes in the cold due to a lineup, for a bowl of 19$ noodles

KD is my guilty pleasure as well. Not the original though, 3 cheese with shells is good. I use just enough milk to make a sauce, not enough to make it thin. If I'm really having a crisis I'll make 2 boxes
It really is just pasta and butter and milk and cheese whey powder though. People make way too big a deal out of how 'bad' it is.

I love baked beans and I love them even more when I can toss some hot dog meat in it. My wife hates beans so I really only get to eat them when she's out. For me it's my most common "husband meal" (https://www.gq.com/story/husband-meal-girl-dinner)

I don't think dried pasta and powdered "cheese" can really ever expire.
I thought I was the only one who liked to swirl an egg and peas into Ramen!(Ichiban is the only one for me). Add some green onion, edamame, and leftover steak if I have it too.

I JUST fucking did that. Stupid Kintaro on demmen changed their hours to 11:30am. Me and other old menz went there at 11am and stood there like retards for 30 minutes.
Then this japanese dude finally opened and was like  <--- man if you were chinese, we'd all be seated and already would have eaten. what you dont want money?!?! why you make us fucking stand there till exactly 11:30.
Oh and they fucked up our orders too. We all got the BBQ shio ramen (makes no sense considering nothing is bbq'd and only braised) but they gave us regular shio ramen (regular one has less pork). Then i complained and was like WHERES THE MEAT!? and they gave us 3 more slices of ice-cold pork. Im like this shit isnt even warmed up...... so then they went and dunked in the broth and gave it back to us.
something was off yesterday, that fucking dude watched too much Hentai or something cuz hes not the usual model of efficiency

Fuck no, I generally will not wait. The 2 general exceptions are dim sum (though most of the time I make a reso) and white spot with the kids.
As for KD about 3 or 4 years back I thought damn I haven't had KD in a long time and my son was really getting into mac and cheese so I thought it's time. At this point I haven't had KD for probably 15 years. Sorry unpopular opinion but I probably won't have it ever again. Yes it did taste the same as I remembered but I guess my taste buds have matured too much over those years as it was wasn't good.

I guess you could say spam is one for me. As a kid, I hated the stuff. Tasted weird, smelled weird and I would have rather had actual meat. Now though, it's definitely a guilty pleasure. Pan fry a few thick slice to eat with instant noodles and some eggs. Dice it up and make a nice fried rice with it. My usuals are to add diced onions, minced garlic, corn and peas. Garnish with some green onions and finish it off with some sesame oil at the very end.
Also, since most of us seem to be old af now, anytime I have fast food it's obviously a guilty pleasure. Fucking love me some mcd's and church's/jollibee but gotta keep that shit to a minimum lol.

My list would be too long to post, but they basically all boil down to some combination of the following:
- carb
- sugar
- caffine
- chocolate
- fatty meats

Oh damn I didn't even knew they made a mac and cheese. My son is obsessed with M&C as well as cheese in general and buy a shit ton of Cracker Barrel cheese. He doesn't like the fancy mac and cheese though his current top 3 are Amy's, White spot, Ikea.

I remember way back being grossed out by people eating ketchup with KD. Like WTF? Until I tried it. Damn, it works. I squeeze a fair amount in one spot and grind a shitload of black pepper on the ketchup. BTW, I was at Canadian Tire when they had their Triangle Bonus Day. 30X points if you spent $150.00. I was $5.00 short, so I looked around and saw this battery operated pepper grinder. I wasn’t expecting much, but I think it’s gotta be one of the greatest gadgets I’ve purchased in quite some time. One handed operation (button on top) and the amount of freshly ground pepper in no time flat. I put pepper in everything now. No effort. lol.
Back to food. Ketchup is probably the unhealthiest condiment out there, but I love it. Ketchup on everything, but tofu……………
KD used to be way better, I find something has changed in the last 5-6 years and its not as good as before. The shells with the Velveeta cheese is money tho.
Oh, definitely changed over the last 50 years. A few times, I’m sure. BTW, KD is a Canadian thing. Invented by a Canadian.
So popular during WWII. You could get two packages for one food stamp.
I purchased KD powder from Costco a few years back (not sure if they carry it anymore). Don’t know why or how I used it, lol.

Okay, here’s one many would scoff at. I don’t think you can even get them now. I found them on the shelves at Walmart. They have a spot for them, but never in stock. I guess I’m not the only one craving it.
Puritan meatballs in gravy.
It has to be Puritan brand anything else is a no go. Heat it up on the stove and pour it over cold rice. Heaven.
It’s the first thing I check out when I go to a Walmart :okay:

Doll brand noodle or Nissan noodle? :suspicious:
One is "gong jai meen" and the other is also called "gong jai meen" except it's actually 'chuut cheen yut ding"
Edit: I had to think really long about this but at first I thought it was coffee/espresso, but my wife said no, and said it was an addiction. :okay: So closest thing is probably instant noodle, particularly the Doll brand instant noodle. I don't have it very often. Maybe once or twice a year at most. I don't see it very often.

Campbells cream of mushroom over white rice, so fucking good.
That's a staple for us in the winter lol.. Except I use it as a base for chicken ala king, with chicken, onions, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, etc. Veggies would be cabbage or cauliflower. I also make a seafood version so it's kind of like the baked seafood you get in HK cafes. Use the Campbell's seafood mushroom version and add whatever seafood - fish, shrimp, squid, mussels, clams, etc. Bake with cheese before serving. Tip: use some cream and butter along with milk.

Fuck, the impact of inflation on chips seems insane these days. $4.50 for 128g bag of hardbite chips at save on ON SALE. Insane to me that fried potatoes now costs more than (locally) prepared meat, like local Red Barn Ham ($2.99/100g)

I don't do cereal, but No Frills on Hastings Street and Clark Drive had Captain Crunch peanut booster cereal for 99¢. I had to get a box. Back of the box had a coupon for a free box of Captain Crunch cereal bar. What a deal! This was about a month or so ago.
Anyway, I used to have puffed riced cereal when I was a kid. That was all we could afford back then. Classmates had Fruit Loops and Lucky Charms............. so jelly I was.

If anyone is curious about the McRib, I managed to try it at one of the pilot locations here in Toronto (Brampton, specifically.)
I did also get a chance to try it in 2022 in the US and noticed there is a big difference in quality and texture between the US and Canadian patty, where I find the Canadian one is better quality overall.
When I tried the McRib at the Brampton location, an Air Canada employee on his break tried to order one and the restaurant had just run out of onions. He threw a hissy fit and got angry, went on a 10 minute rant about how he tried so hard to find it, and settled for a Big mac lol

Puritan beef/irish stew with rice is so dam good. throw in some sriracha
Campbells cream of mushroom over white rice, so fucking good.
I do this too but add chicken lol.
KD + hotdogs +ketchup slaps. esp if you add some kraft cheese slices or other cheddar into it.
used to be lazy and just mix the powder+milk+butter+cheese into the same pot as the macaroni, but now I make the sauce seperate and pour it in and its game changing.

Bought a box of Twinkies from Costco yesterday - 24 of them for $10.99. They are disgustingly good in the worst kind of way. Odd to see that the expiry date is in late March though, though they lasted forever.
Tim Horton's Chicken Noodle Soup from Costco. It had easy open lids and under $2.00 each. It's pretty good. Nothing spectacular, but instead of rice or crackers, I poured some Hostess Hickory Sticks over the bowl of soup. It was one of those matches made in hell.............. the sticks were kind of stale (expired), but the smokey hickory flavour (simulated, of course) added enough weird goodness, it might become my new quick go to, meal. Crackers........ so white, they are.
Hmmmmmm........ next. Doritos?
Here's an ugly thought. Doritos and rice. That would definitely gross me out. Definitely count as a guilty pleasure, gulolol.

Then you have to try Mashups.
Only available in the US of A. I think Walmart are the only ones to carry them. Fudge coated Ding Dongs. Junk food addicts call it the new Chocodiles.

I thought the on going joke was that they're so over processed that they basically do last forever? :lol
I think there was a joke about it in zombieland where they ate some and despite the expiry date it tasted the same as usual...?

It's probably a 'Best Before' date rather than an 'Expiry.'
You can eat BB marked food after, just it might not taste as good as it could be, while Expired food is Do Not Eat after the date.

The McRib is a full time item in Germany. My cousin laughed at me when I made him take me to McD's the second day we were in Berlin. They provide a wet nap with the meal too.

Doesn’t work at all locations, but I use the hand held scanners and keep pressing the button (30 times in that case). Just need one item. You can’t use regular scale top scanner and then move to using the hand held. I do this when I have multiple heavy items. No need to take shit out of cart leave them on bagging area then having to load the shit back into the cart.
It works for me. Maybe because I have Optimum points card tied to the PC World Elite Mastercard.
I’ve done entire carts this way. Again, might not always work. Most of my shopping is done at the Grandview Hwy and Coquitlam (IKEA) locations. I do remember it working at the Metrotown store. Richmond? Yeah, right. Gulolol.

Man I hate how different Superstores have different rules with self check out. At the marine drive location they'd literally run towards you and stop you If they see you use the handheld. They also lose their shit if you don't keep all your items in the scanned section. At metrotown however none of your items need to leave the cart i suppose they recognize maybe not all the stuff can even fit in the scanned items section anyway and it's a waste of time having all your items leave the cart and then you have to pack them all up again. They're much higher traffic so it's maybe a good idea to keep it moving.

I never noticed a hand held scanner. :okay: will need to keep an eye out for it next time. My original plan was scan the same pack 30 times, but the system stopped after the first one. My plan B of asking the worker for help was much better than unpacking all 30, only to rebox it all.

Dice Fish is also known as Fugu, or blowfish. You basically roll the dice when you eat it. As for Dace, well, it’s pretty common. No rolling of dice needed.

While we are on the topic of instant noodles, I'll share a deal which I believe is a price error, not sure if they fixed it yet.
The No Frills on Fraser Street in East Van has these for about 5 bucks.
Normally they're about 10 dollars since this is the premium version compared to the Shin Red.

Here it is. As long as this post stays within Revscene, I don't think the price will change any time soon. If it goes on Redflagdeals then we are all screwed.
Also some notable mentions.
Nissin noodles still listed as 25 cents, but stock is completely depleted.
They also had MAMA noodles for 25 cents, I believe for that particular store only.
No Frills has some unbelievable prices. In-store specials type of deals.
Just this last Saturday, I was at the Hastings and Clark Drive location. They had Kraft salad dressing for 50¢ each. Only two varieties, though. Thousand Island and Basil Parmesan. It was displayed on the end cap................ I should have checked to see if other varieties were also at that price. I'm not a salad kind of person, so no care.
If you're at the produce section when they are putting out bananas, the worker has these 50% off marked bags ready to be filled. Anytime they see bananas in singles, two are three, they pull them apart and put them in the 50% off marked bags. These are not over ripe bananas or old. I guess singles and small bunches don't sell. I watch the guy put a few in the bag and I buy 'em. 5 - 6 bananas for under a buck? Hell yeah.

It's quite good. But I think the Trader Joe's instant noodle is better. The TJ's sauce is not as strong as the Momofuku's, but nothing a little of TJ crispy chilli onion sauce won't solve.
Sadly though, it's no longer available in Bellingham TJ. But it's cheaper than Momofuku.

I just have a tabletop oven.. We bought the biggest one we could find, and it's just big enough to roast a 12 or 13 lb turkey which was our main goal. My bread is getting better and better with each attempt! I learn something every time I make a new loaf.
My starter is about 10 days old and just started doubling in about 7 hours (it's barely 20C so that's good)
https://i.imgur.com/MHSwAtq.png
Will try it out some time next week!
As for the beard, I gave it a shot to see how I'd look.. Kind of in preperation to shave my head since I'm getting close to that point in life LUL
It's not quite bushman level lol.. down to about my collar bone? The issue is my beard grows really low on my face - mostly grows on my neck, chin, and jaw. Above that it's very sparse.. So a big beard looks pretty bad on me. I can grow an insane mustache, but I hate big mustaches, it's such a pain in the ass. I had this big Hungarian handlebar mustache that got compliments, but it was just too much to deal with.
So corpo beard for me I guess FeelsBadMan
I shaved it off once, and I felt just like this (drawn by my friend)

Decided to clear out the larder. Found some interesting stuff in behind stuff way back in the corner where no man has gone before (at least a couple of years or so). There, I found three boxes of KD. Expired two and a half years ago. Looked it up on google and it sounded like it was safe to eat. The taste of it was bland. Maybe it's because I have Covid or something.
SO, I started looking for stuff to add to it. Sweet Thai Sace, OMFG! What a combination. Could have been the slices of pizza pepperoni I added or the layers of seasoned Korean seaweed and cubed tofu plus some baked beans, jbol. It wasn't KD anymore, but amazingly good. So good, I'm going to get more KD (on sale at FreshCo), so I can be surprised when I find those....................in two years.

The boxes got so damn small! Well not the boxes, but the amount of pasta inside. A box used to fill a pretty good sized bowl, but now it only goes up 3/4. I don't feel like such a fiend for finishing a box to myself, but it's also not as satisfying.

I'm part Cantonese like I'm guessing most of you chin-holes here so don't put me on blast. I find Cantonese food to be the blandest type of "Chinese" food out there (everything steamed, boiled and the taste cooked out of it) and unfortunately it's the one that most Westerners are exposed too. AND they usually eat the wierdest shit out there because you know, starvation diets. The only other one most people are familiar with is Szechuan but most of the time here it just means Cantonese style food doused with chillis and peppers till your mouth goes numb.
And yes, Cantonese desserts are garbage their paletes don't understand "Sweet". Don't get me started on HK cafe bastardized Western Cuisine/Deserts too.

Steaming is used, most dim sum are steamed, but boiling is rare unless you call braising boiling as well. I don't know what Chinese food you've been having. Stir fry, deep frying, grilling, roasting, and a lot of dishes taking multiple steps in preparation.

Cantonese cooking /= All of Chinese Cooking
And yes stir frying and roasting is common in Cantonese but grilling less so and both suffer from being over-cooked and under-seasoned most of the time. Just my opinion just as some like steak medium rare, others like it well done.

The cookies/cakes are adapted to a Chinese palate, it's a different taste preference. Much more subtle/milder than Western flavour profile.
My in-laws (Guangdong villagers) prefer things to be quite bland, like they barely use any salt etc. Every time I cook it's like a flavour bomb hits them because I actually use spices and seasoning lmao.
OTOH I have had some excellent Cantonese cuisine with tons of flavour at some of the well-regarded Cantonese restaurants in town (Chef's Choice, Dynasty etc.)

I find Saint Germain a bit meh and none of the Chinese bakeries here are particularly good. God forbid you get a cake from T&T, those are horrid. I'll be honest with you though I'm not a huge fan of Chinese bakery style cakes. None of them are particularly good here. For some reason even the Japanese chain desserts that open here tastes off. The stuff I had in Japan tastes better.
For cakes I prefer specific western stores. A lot places though make them way too sweet.
The Chinese bakers does bread better imo.
When I think Chinese dessert I think of the sweet dimsums, various different kind of egg tarts, and the sweet soups. Chinese stores typically suck at baking lol

For Asian style cakes, this is the spot guys. Not St.Germain, Not Janice or La Patisserie or any of those bakery places. Gary's is hands down the best cake I've had in Vancouver. Tried their Mango cake once at a party, have never looked back. https://maps.app.goo.gl/t4gFWxd5s1xqmu6a8
literally every time you have desserts with asians someone says "i like it because it's not toooo sweet"

Do you mean a lot of restaurants don't have it? Yeah, quite uncommon to find...
Maybe if you go to a specialty dessert shop.
Or just find it in the frozen section at your local Asian grocery store.

What?? Super easy to find frozen at T&T. Chinese dessert places will also have it fresh.
